Let the complexity of a closed manifold M be the minimal number of simplices in a triangulation of M. Such a quantity is clearly submultiplicative with respect to finite coverings, and by taking the infimum on all finite coverings of M normalized by the covering degree we can promote it to a multiplicative invariant, a characteristic number already considered by Milnor and Thurston, which call the "stable complexity" of M.
We study here the relation between the stable complexity of M and Gromov's simplicial volume ||M||. It is immediate to show that ||M|| is smaller or equal than the stable complexity of M and it is natural to ask whether the two quantities coincide on aspherical manifolds with residually finite fundamental group. We show that this is not always the case: there is a constant C_n<1 such that ||M|| is smaller than C_n times the stable complexity for any hyperbolic manifold M of dimension at least 4.
The question in dimension 3 is still open in general. We prove that the stable complexity equals ||M|| for any aspherical irreducible 3-manifold M whose JSJ decomposition consists of Seifert pieces and/or hyperbolic pieces commensurable with the figure-eight knot complement. The equality holds for all closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds if a particular three-dimensional version of the Ehrenpreis conjecture is true.
We show that every closed, locally homogeneous Riemannian manifold with positive simplicial volume must be homeomorphic to a locally symmetric space of non-compact type.
We show that non-elliptic prime 3-manifolds satisfy integral approximation for the simplicial volume, i.e., that their simplicial volume equals the stable integral simplicial volume. The proof makes use of integral foliated simplicial volume and tools from ergodic theory.
We show that the simplicial volume of a contractible 3-manifold not homeomorphic to $\mathbb{R}^3$ is infinite. As a consequence, the Euclidean space may be characterized as the unique contractible $3$-manifold with vanishing minimal volume, or as the unique contractible $3$-manifold supporting a complete finite-volume Riemannian metric with Ricci curvature uniformly bounded from below. On the contrary, we show that in every dimension $n\geq 4$ there exists a contractible $n$-manifold with vanishing simplicial volume not homeomorphic to $\mathbb{R}^n$. We also compute the spectrum of the simpl…
We estimate the upper bound for the $\ell^{\infty}$-norm of the volume form on $\mathbb{H}^2\times\mathbb{H}^2\times\mathbb{H}^2$ seen as a class in $H_{c}^{6}(\mathrm{PSL}_{2}\mathbb{R}\times\mathrm{PSL}_{2}\mathbb{R}\times\mathrm{PSL}_{2}\mathbb{R};\mathbb{R})$. This gives the lower bound for the simplicial volume of closed Riemennian manifolds covered by $\mathbb{H}^{2}\times\mathbb{H}^{2}\times\mathbb{H}^{2}$. The proof of these facts yields an algorithm to compute the lower bound of closed Riemannian manifolds covered by $\big(\mathbb{H}^2\big)^n$.
We prove the simplicial volume of the total space of a smooth fiber bundle with fiber being an oriented closed connected (occ) manifold of nonpositive curvature and negative Ricci curvature over an occ manifold with a closed universal covering is zero. Furthermore, if the fiber is an occ negatively curved manifold with dimension more than $2$, the simplicial volume of the total space is zero if and only if the simplicial volume of the base space is zero.
We show that, in dimension at least $4$, the set of locally finite simplicial volumes of oriented connected open manifolds is $[0, \infty]$. Moreover, we consider the case of tame open manifolds and some low-dimensional examples.
We study the question when a manifold that fibers over a sphere can be rationally essential, or even have positive simplicial volume. More concretely, we show that mapping tori of manifolds (whose fundamental groups can be quite arbitrary) of odd dimension at least 7 with non-zero simplicial volume are very common. This contrasts the case of fiber bundles over a sphere of dimension d > 1: we prove that their total spaces are rationally inessential if d is at least 3, and always have simplicial volume 0. Using a result by Dranishnikov, we also deduce a surprising property of macroscopic dimensi…
We show that there exist closed manifolds with arbitrarily small transcendental simplicial volumes. Moreover, we exhibit an explicit uncountable family of (transcendental) real numbers that are not realised as the simplicial volume of a closed manifold.
New constructions in group homology allow us to manufacture high-dimensional manifolds with controlled simplicial volume. We prove that for every dimension bigger than 3 the set of simplicial volumes of orientable closed connected manifolds is dense in $\mathbb{R}_{\geq 0}$. In dimension 4 we prove that every non-negative rational number is the simplicial volume of some orientable closed connected 4-manifold. Our group theoretic results relate stable commutator length to the $l^1$-semi-norm of certain singular homology classes in degree 2. The output of these results is translated into manifol…
We study the spectrum of simplicial volume for closed manifolds with fixed fundamental group and relate the gap problem to rationality questions in bounded (co)homology. In particular, we show that in many cases this spectrum has a gap at zero. For such groups, this leads to corresponding gap results for the minimal volume entropy semi-norm and for the minimal volume entropy in dimension 4.
This article deals with topological assumptions under which the minimal volume entropy of a closed manifold, and more generally of a finite simplicial complex, vanishes or is positive. In the first part of the article, we present complementing topological conditions expressed in terms of the growth of the fundamental group of the fibers of maps from a given finite simplicial complex to simplicial complexes of lower dimension which ensure that the minimal volume entropy of the simplicial complex either vanishes or is positive. We also give examples of finite simplicial complexes with zero simpl…

In analogy with ordinary simplicial volume, we show that integral foliated simplicial volume of oriented closed connected aspherical $n$-manifolds that admit an open amenable cover of multiplicity at most $n$ is zero. This implies that the fundamental groups of such manifolds have fixed price and are cheap as well as reproves some statements about homology growth.
We present three new inequalities tying the signature, the simplicial volume and the Euler characteristic of surface bundles over surfaces. Two of them are true for any surface bundle, while the third holds on a specific family of surface bundles, namely the ones that arise through a ramified covering. These are the main known examples of bundles with non-zero signature.
