The disk partition function of the open topological string computes the spacetime superpotential for D-branes wrapping cycles of a compact Calabi-Yau threefold. We use string duality to show that when appropriately formulated, the problem admits a natural geometrization in terms of a non-compact Calabi-Yau fourfold without D-branes. The duality relates the D-brane superpotential to a flux superpotential on the fourfold. This sheds light on several features of superpotential computations appearing in the literature, in particular on the observation that Calabi-Yau fourfold geometry enters the problem. In one of our examples, we show that the geometry of fourfolds also reproduces the D-brane superpotentials obtained from matrix factorization methods.
By blowing up the ambient space along the curve wrapped by B-branes, we study the brane superpotentials and Ooguri-Vafa invariants on complete intersections Calabi-Yau threefolds. On the topological B-model side, B-brane superpotentials are expressed in terms of the period integral of the blow-up manifolds. By mirror maps, the superpotentials are generating functions of Ooguri-Vafa invariants counting holomorphic disks on the topological A-model side.
According to the generalized GKZ system for CY manifold with brane and the open-closed Mirror map, We calculate the off-shell D-Brane/F-Theory effective superpotentials and Ooguri-Vafa invariants of several compact Calabi-Yau manifolds .
We show how to compute terms in an expansion of the world-volume superpotential for fairly general D-branes on the quintic Calabi-Yau using linear sigma model techniques, and show in examples that this superpotential captures the geometry and obstruction theory of bundles and sheaves on this Calabi-Yau.
The open supermembrane contribution to the non-perturbative superpotential of bulk space five-branes in heterotic M-theory is presented. We explicitly compute the superpotential for the modulus associated with the separation of a bulk five-brane from an end-of-the-world three-brane. The gauge and kappa-invariant boundary strings of such open supermembranes are given and the role of the holomorphic vector bundle on the orbifold fixed plane boundary is discussed in detail.
The type IIA nonsupersymmetric meta-stable brane configuration consisting of three NS5-branes, D4-branes and anti-D4-branes where the electric gauge theory superpotential has a quartic term for the bifundamentals besides a mass term is constructed. By adding the orientifold 4-plane and 6-plane to this brane configuration, we also describe the intersecting brane configurations of type IIA string theory corresponding to the meta-stable nonsupersymmetric vacua of corresponding gauge theories.
The D-brane superpotential is very important in the low energy effective theory. As the generating function of all disk instantons from the worldsheet point of view, it plays a crucial role in deriving some important properties of the compact Calabi-Yau manifolds. By using the GKZ-generalized hypergeometric system, we will calculate the B-brane superpotentials of two non-fermat type compact Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in toric varieties, respectively. Then according to the mirror symmetry, we obtain the A-model superpotentials and the Ooguri-Vafa invariants for the mirror Calabi-Yau manifolds.
We study the D3-brane moduli dependence of the non-perturbative superpotential generated by the D7-brane gaugino condensation in a type IIB compactification on an orientifold of the elliptic Calabi-Yau threefold $\Bbb{P}_{[1,1,1,6,9]}[18].$ Building on the work of Ganor, in the weak coupling limit, we compute the D3-brane dependent one-loop pfaffian in the flat coordinates and find that the one-loop pfaffian is written as the Jacobi theta function. We also comment on the complex structure dependence of the D3-brane dependent one-loop pfaffian.
We study B-brane superpotentials depending on several closed- and open- moduli on Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces and complete intersections. By blowing up the ambient space along a curve wrapped by B-branes in a Calabi-Yau manifold, we obtain a blow-up new manifold and the period integral satisfying the GKZ-system. Via mirror symmetry to A-model, we calculate the superpotentials and extract Ooguri-Vafa invariants for concrete examples of several open-closed moduli in Calabi-Yau manifolds.
For compact Calabi-Yau geometries with D5-branes we study N=1 effective superpotentials depending on both open- and closed-string fields. We develop methods to derive the open/closed Picard-Fuchs differential equations, which control D5-brane deformations as well as complex structure deformations of the compact Calabi-Yau space. Their solutions encode the flat open/closed coordinates and the effective superpotential. For two explicit examples of compact D5-brane Calabi-Yau hypersurface geometries we apply our techniques and express the calculated superpotentials in terms of flat open/closed co…
We revisit the Hanany-Witten brane construction of 3d gauge theories with N=2 supersymmetry. Instantons are known to generate a superpotential on the Coulomb branch of the theory. We show that this superpotential can be viewed as arising from the classical scattering of domain wall solitons. The domain walls live on the worldvolume of the fivebranes and their existence relies on the recent observation that the charged hypermultiplet at the intersection of perpendicular D-branes has non-canonical kinetic terms. We further show how Dp branes may be absorbed at the intersection of perpendicular D…
We examine the effects of instantons in four dimensional N=1 supersymmetric gauge theory by including D0-branes in type IIA brane constructions. We examine instanton generated superpotentials in supersymmetric QCD and find that they are due to a repulsive force between D4-branes bound to D0-branes ending on NS 5-branes. We study situations where instanton effects break supersymmetry such as the Intriligator-Thomas-Izawa-Yangagida model and relate this to a IIA brane construction. We also argue how confinement due to a condensate of fractional instantons manifests itself in Super Yang-Mills the…
For D-brane system with three D-branes on compact Calabi-Yau threefolds, the dual F-theory fourfolds for parallel/complete coincident/part coincident D-brane system is constructed by the type II/F-theory duality. Complete coincident means that the three D-branes coincide and part coincident represents the coincident of two of the three D branes. The low energy effective superpotentials are calculated by mirror symmetry, GKZ-system method and the type II/F-theory duality on the B-model side, respectively. Using the mirror symmetry, A-model superpotentials and the Ooguri-Vafa invariants are obta…
We construct the type IIA nonsupersymmetric meta-stable brane configuration consisting of (2k+1) NS5-branes and D4-branes where the electric gauge theory superpotential has an order (2k+2) polynomial for the bifundamentals. We find a rich pattern of nonsupersymmetric meta-stable states as well as the supersymmetric stable ones. By adding the orientifold 4-plane to this brane configuration, we also describe the intersecting brane configuration of type IIA string theory corresponding to the meta-stable nonsupersymmetric vacua of corresponding gauge theory.
From the worldsheet perspective, the superpotential on a D-brane wrapping internal cycles of a Calabi-Yau manifold is given as a generating functional for disk correlation functions. On the other hand, from the geometric point of view, D-brane superpotentials are captured by certain chain integrals. In this work, we explicitly show for branes wrapping internal 2-cycles how these two different approaches are related. More specifically, from the worldsheet point of view, D-branes at the Landau-Ginzburg point have a convenient description in terms of matrix factorizations. We use a formula derive…
We calculate the D-brane superpotentials for two non-Fermat type compact Calabi-Yau manifolds which are the hypersurfaces of the weighed projective spaces in type II string theory. By constructing the open-closed mirror maps, we also compute the Ooguri-Vafa invariants, which are related to the open Gromov-Witten invariants.
We develop computational tools for the tree-level superpotential of B-branes in Calabi-Yau orientifolds. Our method is based on a systematic implementation of the orientifold projection in the geometric approach of Aspinwall and Katz. In the process we lay down some ground rules for orientifold projections in the derived category.
I study A-infinity enhancements of algebraic Calabi-Yau triangulated categories admitting a (triangle) generator, showing that the Serre pairing on such categories determines and is determined by a cyclic pairing on an enhancement of the generator. Using this result, I construct a formal topological string field action inducing an extended D-brane superpotential for such categories. I also give a procedure for lifting certain 2d boundary topological field theories to open topological string theories generated by a single D-brane.
We investigate the one-parameter Calabi-Yau models and identify families of D5-branes which are associated to lines embedded in these manifolds. The moduli spaces are given by sets of Riemann curves, which form a web whose intersection points are described by permutation branes. We arrive at a geometric interpretation for bulk-boundary correlators as holomorphic differentials on the moduli space and use this to compute effective open-closed superpotentials to all orders in the open string couplings. The fixed points of D5-brane moduli under bulk deformations are determined.
We present a general method for the computation of tree-level superpotentials for the world-volume theory of B-type D-branes. This includes quiver gauge theories in the case that the D-brane is marginally stable. The technique involves analyzing the A-infinity structure inherent in the derived category of coherent sheaves. This effectively gives a practical method of computing correlation functions in holomorphic Chern-Simons theory. As an example, we give a more rigorous proof of previous results concerning 3-branes on certain singularities including conifolds. We also provide a new example.
The behaviour of D2-branes on the quintic under complex structure deformations is analysed by combining Landau-Ginzburg techniques with methods from conformal field theory. It is shown that the boundary renormalisation group flow induced by the bulk deformations is realised as a gradient flow of the effective space time superpotential which is calculated explicitly to all orders in the boundary coupling constant.
Under heterotic/F-theory duality it was argued that a wide class of heterotic five-branes is mapped into the geometry of an F-theory compactification manifold. In four-dimensional compactifications this identifies a five-brane wrapped on a curve in the base of an elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau threefold with a specific F-theory Calabi-Yau fourfold containing the blow-up of the five-brane curve. We argue that this duality can be reformulated by first constructing a non-Calabi-Yau heterotic threefold by blowing up the curve of the five-brane into a divisor with five-brane flux. Employing hetero…
We study the dynamics governing space-time filling D-branes on Type II flux backgrounds preserving four-dimensional N=1 supersymmetry. The four-dimensional superpotentials and D-terms are derived. The analysis is kept on completely general grounds thanks to the use of recently proposed generalized calibrations, which also allow one to show the direct link of the superpotentials and D-terms with BPS domain walls and cosmic strings respectively. In particular, our D-brane setting reproduces the tension of D-term strings found from purely four-dimensional analysis. The holomorphicity of the super…
We study D2-branes on the K3-fibration P^4_(11222)[8] using matrix factorizations at the Landau-Ginzburg point and analyze their moduli space and superpotentials in detail. We find that the open string moduli space consists of various intersecting branches of different dimensions. Families of D2-branes wrapping rational curves of degree one intersect with bound state branches. The influence of non-toric complex structure deformations is investigated in the Landau-Ginzburg framework, where these deformations arise as bulk moduli from the twisted sectors.
In four-dimensional F-theory compactifications with N=1 supersymmetry the fields describing the dynamics of space-time filling 7-branes are part of the complex structure moduli space of the internal Calabi-Yau fourfold. We explicitly compute the flux superpotential in F-theory depending on all complex structure moduli, including the 7-brane deformations and the field corresponding to the dilaton-axion. Since fluxes on the 7-branes induce 5-brane charge, a local limit allows to effectively match the F-theory results to a D5-brane in a non-compact Calabi-Yau threefold with threeform fluxes. We a…
We compute the partition function for the topological Landau-Ginzburg B-model on the disk. This is done by treating the worldsheet superpotential perturbatively. We argue that this partition function as a function of bulk and boundary perturbations may be identified with the effective D-brane superpotential in the target spacetime. We point out the relationship of this approach to matrix factorizations. Using these methods, we prove a conjecture for the effective superpotential of Herbst, Lazaroiu and Lerche for the A-type minimal models. We also consider the Landau-Ginzburg theory of the cubi…
We obtain the brane setup describing 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ dualities for $USp(2N_c)$ and $U(N_c)$ SQCD with monopole superpotentials. This classification follows from a complete analysis of affine and twisted affine compactifications from 4d. The analysis leads to a new duality for the unitary case that has been previously overlooked in the literature. We check this by matching of the three sphere partition function of the two sides of this new duality and find a perfect agreement. Furthermore we use the partition function to predict new 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ dualities for SQCD with monopole superpo…
For the case where the gauge theory superpotential has a quartic term as well as the mass term for quarks, the nonsupersymmetric meta-stable brane configuration was found recently. By adding the orientifold 6-planes and the extra fundamental flavors to this brane configuration, we describe the meta-stable nonsupersymmetric vacua of the gauge theory with antisymmetric flavor as well as fundamental flavors in type IIA string theory.
We study different aspects of the non-perturbative superpotentials induced by Euclidean E3-branes on systems of D3/D7-branes located at Abelian orbifold singularities. We discuss in detail how the induced couplings are consistent with the U(1) symmetries carried by the D3/D7-branes. We construct different compact and non-compact examples, and show phenomenologically relevant couplings like $μ$-terms or certain Yukawa couplings generated by these E3 instantons. Some other novel effects are described. We show an example where E3-instantons combine with standard gauge instantons to yield new mult…
We analyze various brane configurations corresponding to field theories in three, four and five dimensions. We find brane configurations which correspond to three dimensional N=2 and four dimensional N=1 supersymmetric QCD theories with quartic superpotentials, in which what appear to be ``hidden parameters'' play an important role. We discuss the construction of five dimensional N=1 supersymmetric gauge theories and superconformal fixed points using branes, which leads to new five dimensional N=1 superconformal field theories. The same five dimensional theories are also used, in a surprising …
A large class of D-branes in Calabi-Yau spaces can be constructed at the Gepner points using the techniques of boundary conformal field theory. In this note we develop methods that allow to compute open string amplitudes for such D-branes. In particular, we present explicit formulas for the products of open string vertex operators of untwisted A-type branes. As an application we show that the boundary theories of the quintic associated with the special Lagrangian submanifolds Im ω_i z_i = 0 where ω_i^5=1 possess no continuous moduli.
We discuss string corrections to the effective potential in various models of brane inflation. These corrections contribute to the mass of the inflaton candidate and may improve its slow-roll properties. In particular, in orientifold string compactifications with dynamical D3- and D7-branes, the corrections induce inflaton dependence in the part of the superpotential that arises from gaugino condensation or other nonperturbative effects. The additional terms are in part required by supersymmetry. We explicitly discuss D3/D7-inflation, where flat directions of the potential can be lifted, and t…
We investigate the dynamics of space-time filling five-branes wrapped on curves in heterotic and orientifold Calabi-Yau compactifications. We first study the leading N=1 scalar potential on the infinite deformation space of the brane-curve around a supersymmetric configuration. The higher order potential is also determined by a brane superpotential which we compute for a subset of light deformations. We argue that these deformations map to new complex structure deformations of a non-Calabi-Yau manifold which is obtained by blowing up the brane-curve into a four-cycle and by replacing the brane…
In this short note we apply methods of Aspinwall-Katz to compute superpotentials of D-branes wrapped on more general obstructed rational curves in Calabi-Yau threefolds. We find an a priori unexpected match between superpotentials from certain such curves and the superpotentials of Landau-Ginzburg models corresponding to minimal models.
We present a detailed study of D-brane superpotentials depending on several open and closed-string deformations. The relative cohomology group associated with the brane defines a generalized hypergeometric GKZ system which determines the off-shell superpotential and its analytic properties under deformation. Explicit expressions for the N=1 superpotential for families of type II/F-theory compactifications are obtained for a list of multi-parameter examples. Using the Hodge theoretic approach to open-string mirror symmetry, we obtain new predictions for integral disc invariants in the A model i…
We give a detailed microscopic derivation of gauge and stringy instanton generated superpotentials for gauge theories living on D3-branes at Z_3-orientifold singularities. Gauge instantons are generated by D(-1)-branes and lead to Affleck, Dine and Seiberg (ADS) like superpotentials in the effective N=1 gauge theories with three generations of bifundamental and anti/symmetric matter. Stringy instanton effects are generated by Euclidean ED3-branes wrapping four-cycles on T^6/\Z_3. They give rise to Majorana masses in one case and non-renormalizable superpotentials for the other cases. Finally w…
In this note we explore the stringy interpretation of non-perturbative effects in N=1^* deformations of the A_{k-1} quiver models. For certain types of deformations we argue that the massive vacua are described by Nk fractional D3-branes at the orbifold polarizing into k concentric 5-brane spheres each carrying fractional brane charge. The polarization of the D3-branes induces a polarization of D-instantons into string world-sheets wrapped on the Myers spheres. We show that the superpotentials in these models are indeed generated by these world-sheet instantons. We point out that for certain p…
This thesis is concerned with D-branes in topological string theory, focusing on the description of B-type D-branes in topological Landau-Ginzburg models. Such D-branes are characterized by matrix factorizations of the Landau-Ginzburg superpotential. After reviewing some aspects of topological string theory we give a detailed discussion of matrix factorizations. We discuss methods to calculate the effective superpotential in minimal models, putting emphasis on an algorithm to calculate the effective superpotential via deformations of matrix factorizations. We furthermore perform a non-trivial …
The four-dimensional effective action for D5-branes in generic compact Calabi-Yau orientifolds is computed by performing a Kaluza-Klein reduction. The N=1 Kaehler potential, the superpotential, the gauge-kinetic coupling function and the D-terms are derived in terms of the geometric data of the internal space and of the two-cycle wrapped by the D5-brane. In particular, we obtain the D5-brane and flux superpotential by integrating out four-dimensional three-forms which couple via the Chern-Simons action. Also the infinitesimal complex structure deformations of the two-cycle induced by the defor…
In this work we study asymmetric thick braneworld scenarios, generated after adding a constant to the superpotential associated to the scalar field. We study in particular models with odd and even polynomial superpotentials, and we show that asymmetric brane can be generated irrespective of the potential being symmetric or asymmetric. We study in addition the nonpolynomial sine-Gordon-like model, also constructed with the inclusion of a constant in the standard superpotential, and we investigate gravitational stability of the asymmetric brane. The results suggest robustness of the new branewor…
There are two known sources of nonperturbative superpotentials for Kähler moduli in type IIB orientifolds, or F-theory compactifications on Calabi-Yau fourfolds, with flux: Euclidean brane instantons and low-energy dynamics in D7 brane gauge theories. The first class of effects, Euclidean D3 branes which lift in M-theory to M5 branes wrapping divisors of arithmetic genus 1 in the fourfold, is relatively well understood. The second class has been less explored. In this paper, we consider the explicit example of F-theory on $K3 \times K3$ with flux. The fluxes lift the D7 brane matter fields, an…
In this paper we show that it is possible to derive non-perturbative superpotential terms from a stringy instanton without introducing orientifold planes. The instanton is realized by a Euclidean D brane wrapping a non-trivial cycle upon which we also wrap a single space-filling D brane. The standard problem of unwanted neutral fermionic zero modes is evaded by the appearance of couplings to charged bosonic zero modes in the instanton moduli action. Since the Euclidean D brane wraps a cycle which is not associated to any low energy gauge dynamics, it can not be interpreted as an ordinary gauge…
In this note, we study D-brane instantons which intersect N=1 supersymmetric configurations of space-filling D-branes in general Calabi-Yau compactifications of type IIB string theory. Our focus is on rigid ``stringy instantons'' -- those which cannot be interpreted as Yang-Mills instantons in a non-Abelian gauge group on any stack of space-filling D-branes. We show that their contributions to the space-time superpotential can be determined by a topological B-model computation of the tree-level superpotential for a related auxiliary brane system. This computation is very tractable, as it is go…
Non-perturbative superpotential cross-couplings between visible sector matter and Kähler moduli can lead to significant flavour-changing neutral currents in compactifications of type IIB string theory. Here, we compute corrections to Yukawa couplings in orbifold models with chiral matter localised on D3-branes and non-perturbative effects on distant D7-branes. By evaluating a threshold correction to the D7-brane gauge coupling, we determine conditions under which the non-perturbative corrections to the Yukawa couplings appear. The flavour structure of the induced Yukawa coupling generically fa…
We develop some computational methods for the integrals over the 3-chains on the compact Calabi-Yau 3-folds that plays a prominent role in the analysis of the topological B-model in the context of the open mirror symmetry. We discuss such 3-chain integrals in two approaches. In the first approach, we provide a systematic algorithm to obtain the inhomogeneous Picard-Fuchs equations. In the second approach, we discuss the analytic continuation of the period integral to compute the 3-chain integral directly. The latter direct integration method is applicable for both on-shell and off-shell formal…
B-type D-branes can be obtained from matrix factorizations of the Landau-Ginzburg superpotential. We here review this promising approach to learning about the spacetime superpotential of Calabi-Yau compactifications. We discuss the grading of the D-branes, and present applications in two examples: the two-dimensional torus, and the quintic.
We study U(N) SQCD with N_f <= N flavors of quarks and antiquarks by engineering it with a configuration of fractional D3-branes on a C^3 / Z_2 x Z_2 orbifold. In particular we show how the moduli space of the gauge theory naturally emerges from the classical geometry produced by the D3-branes, and how the non-perturbatively generated superpotential is recovered from geometrical data.
We briefly report on some recent progress in the computation of B-brane superpotentials for Type II strings compactified on Calabi-Yau manifolds, obtained by using a parametrization of tubular neighborhoods of complex submanifolds, also known as local spaces. In particular, we propose a closed expression for the superpotential of a brane on a genus-g curve in a Calabi-Yau threefold in the case in which there exists a holomorphic projection from the local space around the curve to the curve itself.
We investigate, at the microscopic level, the compatibility between D-term potentials from world-volume fluxes on D7-branes and non-perturbative superpotentials arising from gaugino condensation on a different stack of D7-branes. This is motivated by attempts to construct metastable de Sitter vacua in type IIB string theory via D-term uplifts. We find a condition under which the Kaehler modulus, T, of a Calabi-Yau 4-cycle gets charged under the anomalous U(1) on the branes with flux. If in addition this 4-cycle is wrapped by a stack of D7-branes on which gaugino condensation takes place, the q…
We discuss the behaviour of non-perturbative superpotentials in 4d N=1 type II compactifications (and orientifolds thereof) near lines of marginal stability, where the spectrum of contributing BPS D-brane instantons changes discontinuously. The superpotential is nevertheless continuous, in agreement with its holomorphic dependence on the closed string moduli. The microscopic mechanism ensuring this continuity involves novel contributions to the superpotential: As an instanton becomes unstable against decay to several instantons, the latter provide a multi-instanton contribution which reconstru…
We discuss the dependence of superpotential terms in 4D F-theory on moduli parameters. Two cases are studied: the dependence on world-filling 3-brane positions and the dependence on 2-form VEVs. In the first case there is a zero when the 3-brane hits the divisor responsible for the superpotential. In the second case, which has been extensively discussed by Witten in 3D M-theory, there is a zero for special values of 2-form VEVs when the M-theory divisor contains non-trivial 3-cycles. We give an alternative derivation of this fact for the special case of F-theory.
We consider brane configurations in M-theory describing N=1 supersymmetric gauge theories and using the parametric representation of the brane configurations, we calculate the superpotentials for various cases including multiple gauge groups or fermions. For SU(n) N=1 SQCD with $N_f$ fermion case ($N_f < N_c)$, we find that the superpotential from M-theory and the gauge theory agree precisely. This gives a direct evidence of the validity of Witten's M-theory method for calculating the super potential.
We study the F-terms in N=1 supersymmetric, d=4 gauge theories arising from D(p+3)-branes wrapping supersymmetric p-cycles in a Calabi-Yau threefold. If p is even the spectrum and superpotential for a single brane are determined by purely classical ($α^\prime \to 0$) considerations. If p=3, superpotentials for massless modes are forbidden to all orders in $α^\prime$ and may only be generated by open string instantons. For this latter case we find that such instanton effects are generically present. Mirror symmetry relates even and odd p and thus perturbative and nonperturbative superpotentials…
M5-branes wrapping a holomorphic curve in a Calabi-Yau manifold can be used to construct four-dimensional N=1 gauge theories. In this paper we will consider M5-brane configurations corresponding to N=2 theories broken to N=1 by a superpotential for the adjoint scalar field. These M5-brane configurations can be obtained by lifting suitable intersecting brane configurations in type IIA, or equivalently by T-dualizing IIB configurations with branes and/or fluxes. We will show that turning on non-trivial expectation values for the glueball superfields corresponds to non-holomorphic deformations of…
We discuss the worldvolume description of intersecting D-branes, including the metric on the moduli space of deformations. We impose a choice of static gauge that treats all the branes on an equal footing and describes the intersection of D-branes as an embedded special Lagrangian three-surface. Some explicit solutions to these equations are given and their interpretation in terms of a superpotential on moduli space is discussed. These surfaces arise from flat direction of a non-Abelian superpotential and imply the existance of non-compact G_2 manifolds.
In the context of brane gas cosmology in superstring theory, we show why it is impossible to simultaneously stabilize the dilaton and the radion with a general gas of strings (including massless modes) and D-branes. Although this requires invoking a different mechanism to stabilize these moduli fields, we find that the brane gas can still play a crucial role in the early universe in assisting moduli stabilization. We show that a modest energy density of specific types of brane gas can solve the overshoot problem that typically afflicts potentials arising from gaugino condensation.
In this work we present a new class of braneworld models, where the superpotential function may be decomposed in a very specific form, but still embracing, which allows considerable simplifications in the field equations. We exemplify the method with two specific models that are extended versions of superpotentials already considered in the literature. As one can see in the examples, the braneworld scenarios obtained here present very interesting features, such as split brane mechanism and asymmetric warp factor shape, which is essential to address the hierarchy problem in the context of thick…
We consider the low-energy limit of the two-dimensional theory on k M2-branes suspended between a straight M5-brane and a curved M5-brane. We argue that it is described by an N=(2,2) supersymmetric gauge theory with no matter fields but with a non-trivial twisted superpotential, and also by an N=(2,2) supersymmetric Landau-Ginzburg model, such that the (twisted) superpotentials are determined by the shape of the M5-branes. We find particular cases realize Kazama-Suzuki models. Evidence is provided by the study of ground states, chiral rings, BPS spectra and S^2 partition functions of the syste…
We investigate half-supersymmetric domain wall solutions of four maximally supersymmetric D=9 massive supergravity theories obtained by Scherk-Schwarz reduction of D=10 IIA and IIB supergravity. One of the theories does not have a superpotential and does not allow domain wall solutions preserving any supersymmetry. The other three theories have superpotentials leading to half-supersymmetric domain wall solutions, one of which has zero potential but non-zero superpotential. The uplifting of these domain wall solutions to ten dimensions leads to three classes of half-supersymmetric Type IIB 7-br…
We consider two simple examples of multi-instanton configurations in type II 4d N=1 superstring compactifications. The first one involves O(1) and U(1) D2-instantons embedded in T^6/(Z_2 x Z_2') geometry with SU(4) gauge symmetry coming from D6-branes and the second is related to quiver gauge theory of orientifolded orbifold of conifold containing fractional D(-1)-instantons and D3-branes. The additional zero modes of instantons which appear at the intersection points are lifted through interactions stemming from dimensionally reduced F- and D-terms. It is shown that multi-instanton configurat…
