We study domain wall (DW) dynamics in permalloy nanowires excited by alternating spin-polarized current applied perpendicular to the nanowire. Spin torque ferromagnetic resonance measurements reveal that DW oscillations at a pinning site in the nanowire can be excited with velocities as high as 800 m/s at current densities below 10$^7$ A/cm$^2$.
The domain wall nucleation and motion processes in Permalloy nanowires with a thickness gradient along the nanowire axis have been studied. Nanowires with widths, w = 250 nm to 3 um and a base thickness of t = 10 nm were fabricated by electron-beam lithography. The magnetization hysteresis loops measured on individual nanowires are compared to corresponding nanowires without a thickness gradient. The Hc vs. t/w curves of wires with and without a thickness gradient are discussed and compared to micromagnetic simulations. We find a metastability regime at values of w, where a transformation from…
The magnetostatic interaction between two oppositely charged transverse domain walls (DWs)in adjacent Permalloy nanowires is experimentally demonstrated. The dependence of the pinning strength on wire separation is investigated for distances between 13 and 125 nm, and depinning fields up to 93 Oe are measured. The results can be described fully by considering the interaction between the full complex distribution of magnetic charge within rigid, isolated DWs. This suggests the DW internal structure is not appreciably disturbed by the pinning potential, and that they remain rigid although the pi…
Using Lorentz transmission electron microscopy we investigate the behavior of domain walls pinned at non-topographic defects in Cr(3 nm)/Permalloy(10 nm)/Cr(5 nm) nanowires of width 500 nm. The pinning sites consist of linear defects where magnetic properties are modified by a Ga ion probe with diameter ~ 10 nm using a focused ion beam microscope. We study the detailed change of the modified region (which is on the scale of the focused ion spot) using electron energy loss spectroscopy and differential phase contrast imaging on an aberration (Cs) corrected scanning transmission electron microsc…
We have designed a system to study microwave assisted domain wall nucleation in permalloy nanowires. We find a substantial decrease in the nucleation field when microwave fields are applied, in comparison to pulse fields. A clear resonance peak is observed in the frequency dependence of the nucleation field, which coincides with the uniform mode ferromagnetic resonance frequency. Owing to the well-defined nucleation process, the switching field distribution is small in contrast to previous reports. Our results show that localized microwave field provides an efficient tool for injecting domain …
We study field-induced domain wall motion in permalloy nanowires with vertically etched nanotrench pinning site. Micromagnetic simulations and electrical measurements are employed to characterize the pinning potential at the nanotrench. It is found that the potential profile for a transverse wall significantly differs from that of a vortex wall, and there is a correlation between the pinning strength and the potential profile. Reliable domain wall pinning and depinning is experimentally observed from a nanotrench in permalloy nanowires. This demonstrates the suitability of the proposed nanotre…
The damping $α$ of the spinwave resonances in 75 nm, 120 nm, and 200nm -thick Permalloy films is measured via vector-network-analyzer ferromagnetic-resonance (VNA-FMR) in the out-of-plane geometry. Inductive coupling between the sample and the waveguide leads to an additional radiative damping term. The radiative contribution to the over-all damping is determined by measuring perpendicular standing spin waves (PSSWs) in the Permalloy films, and the results are compared to a simple analytical model. The damping of the PSSWs can be fully explained by three contributions to the damping: The intri…
We report several procedures for the robust nucleation of magnetic domain walls in cylindrical permalloy nanowires. Specific features of the magnetic force microscopy contrast of such soft wires are discussed, with a view to avoid the misinterpretation of the magnetization states. The domain walls could be moved under quasistatic magnetic fields in the range 0.1--10 mT.
In the developing field of magnonics,it is very important to achieve tailoring of spin wave propagation by both a proper combination of materials with different magnetic properties and their nanostructuring on the submicrometric scale. We have exploited deep ultra-violet lithography, in combination with tilted shadow deposition technique, to fabricate arrays of closely spaced bi-layer nanowires (NWs), with separation d=100 nm and periodicity a=440 nm, having bottom and top layers made of Permalloy and Iron, respectively. The NWs have either rectangular cross section (bottom and upper layers of…
Perpendicular magnetic anisotropy [Co/Pd]15 and L10-FePt nanowire arrays of period 63 nm with linewidths 38 nm and 27 nm and film thickness 27 nm and 20 nm respectively were fabricated using a self-assembled PS-b-PDMS diblock copolymer film as a lithographic mask. The wires are predicted to support Neel walls in the Co/Pd and Bloch walls in the FePt. Magnetostatic interactions from nearest neighbor nanowires promote a ground state configuration consisting of alternating up and down magnetization in adjacent wires. This was observed over ~75% of the Co/Pd wires after ac-demagnetization but was …
We present the current controlled motion of dynamic soliton embedded in spin wave background in ferromagnetic nanowire. With the stronger breather character we get the novel magnetic rogue wave and clarify its formation mechanism. The generation of magnetic rogue wave is mainly arose from the accumulation of energy and magnons toward to its central part. We also observe that the spin-polarized current can control the exchange rate of magnons between envelope soliton and background, and the critical current condition is obtained analytically. Even more interesting is that the spin-transfer torq…
We study thermally assisted domain wall generation in perpendicular magnetic anisotropy CoFeB trilayer nanowires by the effect of Joule heating. The anomalous Hall effect is utilized to detect magnetization reversal in order to study the domain wall generation. We observe a statistical distribution in the switching process which is consistent with the thermal activation process. Our results show that the proposed method provides an efficient way for generating domain walls in perpendicular magnetic nanowires at predefined locations.
We use spin torque ferromagnetic resonance to measure the spectral properties of dipole-exchange spin waves in permalloy nanowires. Our measurements reveal that geometric confinement has a profound effect on the damping of spin waves in the nanowire geometry. The damping parameter of the lowest-energy quantized spin wave mode depends on applied magnetic field in a resonant way and exhibits a maximum at a field that increases with decreasing nanowire width. This enhancement of damping originates from a nonlinear resonant three-magnon confluence process allowed at a particular bias field value d…
We study theoretically the current-induced magnetic domain wall motion in a metallic nanowire with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. The anisotropy can reduce the critical current density of the domain wall motion. We explain the reduction mechanism and identify the maximal reduction conditions. This result facilitates both fundamental studies and device applications of the current- induced domain wall motion.
We report the results of micromagnetic simulations of domain wall (DW) nucleation and pinning/depinning processes in ferromagnetic planar structure consisting of nanowire (NW) with perpendicular anisotropy and special V-shaped nanoparticle (NP) with in-plane anisotropy located on top of NW. The magnetization reversal features of this system in an external magnetic field are investigated depending on the direction of particle magnetic moment. Possible variants of magnetic logic cells (LCs) based on such system are discussed.
The potential experienced by transverse domain walls (TDWs) in the vicinity of asymmetric constrictions or protrusions in thin Permalloy nanowires is probed using spatially resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect measurements. Both types of traps are found to act as pinning centers for DWs. The strength of pinning is found to depend on the trap type as well as on the chirality of the incoming DW; both types of traps are seen to act either as potential wells or potential barriers, also depending on the chirality of the DW. Micromagnetic simulations have been performed that are in good qualitative …
We demonstrate the magnetically-induced transparency (MIT) effect in Y$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$(YIG)/Permalloy(Py) coupled bilayers. The measurement is achieved via a heterodyne detection of the coupled magnetization dynamics using a single wavelength that probes the magneto-optical Kerr and Faraday effects of Py and YIG, respectively. Clear features of the MIT effect are evident from the deeply modulated ferromagnetic resonance of Py due to the perpendicular-standing-spin-wave of YIG. We develop a phenomenological model that nicely reproduces the experimental results including the induced amplitude …
Current induced spin-orbit torques have been studied in ferromagnetic nanowires made of 20 nm thick Co/Pd multilayers with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. Using Hall voltage and lock-in measurements, it is found that upon injection of an electric current both in-plane (Slonczewski-like) and perpendicular (field-like) torques build up in the nanowire. The torque efficiencies are found to be as large as 1.17 kOe and 5 kOe at 108 A/cm2 for the in-plane and perpendicular components, respectively, which is surprisingly comparable to previous studies in ultrathin (~ 1 nm) magnetic bilayers. We sh…
Current induced domain wall (DW) motion has been investigated in a 600-nm wide nanowire using multilayer film with a structure of Ta(5 nm)/Pd(5 nm)/[CoFe(0.4 nm)/Pd(1.2 nm)]$_{15}$/Ta(5 nm)in terms of anomalous Hall effect measurements. It is found that motion of DWs can be driven by a current density as low as 1.44$\times$10$^{11}$ A.m$^{-2}$. The effect of the Oersted field ($H_{Oe}$) and spin transfer torque field ($H_{ST}$), which are considered as effective fields for DW motion, has been quantitatively separated from the dependence of depinning fields on the current. The results show that…
Spin torque oscillators (STOs) are emerging microwave devices that can potentially be used in spin-logic devices and the next-generation high-speed computing architecture. Thanks to their non-linear nature, STOs are easily tunable by the magnetic field and the dc current. Spin Hall nano-oscillators (SHNOs) are promising types of STOs and most of the current studies focus on localized modes that can be easily excited. Here, we study using micromagnetic simulations, the nature of the spin-torque-induced excitations in nanowire devices made of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) material. Our…
We present experimental evidence of metastable magnetic domains in cylindrical CoNi nanowires. Transverse (perpendicular) domains have been previously observed only in flat nanostrips. Here they are found together with more conventional vortex domains along the same cylindrical nanowire, denoting a bistable system with similar free energies. The surface and the inner magnetization distribution in both types of domains are analyzed by Photo-Emission Electron Microscopy (PEEM) with X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) contrast, and hysteresis loop in individual nanowires are measured by Magn…
An out-of-plane Oersted field produced from a current-carrying Au wire is used to induce local domain formation in wires made from [Co/Pd]15 multilayers with perpendicular anisotropy. A 100 ns pulsed current of 56-110 mA injected into the Au wire created a reverse domain size of 120-290 nm in a Co/Pd nanowire on one side of the Au wire. A Biot-Savart model was used to estimate the position dependence of the Oersted field around the Au wire. The shape, size and location of the reversed region of Co/Pd was consistent with the magnitude of the Oersted field and the switching field distribution of…
Dynamic micromagnetic simulation studies have been completed to observe the motion of a domain wall in a magnetic nanowire in an effort to increase the field-driven domain wall speed. Previous studies have shown that the wire dimensions place a cap on the maximum speed attainable by a domain wall when driven by a magnetic field placed along the direction of the nanowire. Here we present data showing a significant increase in the maximum speed of a domain wall due to the addition of a magnetic field placed perpendicular to the longitudinal driving field. The results are expressed in terms of th…
Perpendicularly magnetized materials have attracted tremendous interest due to their high anisotropy, which results in extremely narrow, nano-sized domain walls. As a result, the recently studied current-induced domain wall motion (CIDWM) in these materials promises to enable a novel class of data, memory, and logic devices. In this letter, we propose the spin Hall effect as a radically new mechanism for CIDWM. We are able to carefully tune the net spin Hall current in depinning experiments on Pt/Co/Pt nanowires, offering unique control over CIDWM. Furthermore, we determine that the depinning …
Three-dimensional linear spin-wave eigenmodes of a Permalloy disk having finite thickness are studied by micromagnetic simulations based on the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation. The eigenmodes found in the simulations are interpreted as linear superpositions (hybridizations) of 'approximate' three-dimensional eigenmodes, which are the fundamental gyromode $G_0$, the spin-wave modes and the higher-order gyromodes $G_N$ (flexure modes), the thickness dependence of which is represented by perpendicular standing spin waves. This hybridization leads to new and surprising dependencies of the mode fr…
We have measured the terahertz response of oriented germanium nanowires using ultrafast optical-pump terahertz-probe spectroscopy. We present results on the time, frequency, and polarization dependence of the terahertz response. Our results indicate intraband energy relaxation times of photoexcited carriers in the 1.5-2.0 ps range, carrier density dependent interband electron-hole recombination times in the 75-125 ps range, and carrier momentum scattering rates in the 60-90 fs range. Additionally, the terahertz response of the nanowires is strongly polarization dependent despite the subwavelen…
From measurements of the current-perpendicular-to-plane (CPP) magnetoresistance of ferromagnetically coupled [Co(90)Fe(10)/Cu]xn multilayers, within sputtered Permalloy-based double exchange biased spin-valves, we determine the parameter delta[(Co(90)Fe(10))/Cu] = 0.19 +/- 0.04 that sets the probability P of spin-flipping at a Co(90)Fe(10)/Cu interface via the equation P = 1 - exp(-delta).
We report on current induced domain wall propagation in a patterned GaMnAs microwire with perpendicular magnetization. An unexpected slowing down of the propagation velocity has been found when the moving domain wall extends over only half of the width of the wire. This slowing down is related to the elongation of a longitudinal wall along the axis of the wire. By using an energy balance argument, the expected theoretical dependence of the velocity change has been calculated and compared with the experimental results. According to this, the energy associated to the longitudinal domain wall sho…
We investigate diffusive transport through a number of domain wall (DW) profiles of the important magnetic alloy Permalloy taking into account simultaneously noncollinearity, alloy disorder, and spin-orbit coupling fully quantum mechanically, from first principles. In addition to observing the known effects of magnetization mistracking and anisotropic magnetoresistance, we discover a not-previously identified contribution to the resistance of a DW that comes from spin-orbit-coupling-mediated spin-flip scattering in a textured diffusive ferromagnet. This adiabatic DW resistance, which should ex…
The discovery of three-dimensional (3D) topological insulators opens a gateway to generate unusual phases and particles made of the helical surface electrons, proposing new applications using unusual spin nature. Demonstration of the helical electron transport is a crucial step to both physics and device applications of topological insulators. Topological insulator nanowires, of which spin-textured surface electrons form 1D band manipulated by enclosed magnetic flux, offer a unique nanoscale platform to realize quantum transport of spin-momentum locking nature. Here, we report an observation o…
Using focused electron-beam-induced deposition (FEBID), we fabricate vertical, platinum-coated cobalt nanowires with a controlled three-dimensional structure. The latter is engineered to feature bends along the height: these are used as pinning sites for domain walls, the presence of which we investigate using X-ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism (XMCD) coupled to PhotoEmission Electron Microscopy (PEEM). The vertical geometry of our sample combined with the low incidence of the X-ray beam produce an extended wire shadow which we use to recover the wire's magnetic configuration. In this transmiss…
Detailed understanding of spin dynamics in magnetic nanomaterials is necessary for developing ultrafast, low-energy and high-density spintronic logic and memory. Here, we develop micromagnetic models and analytical solutions to elucidate the effect of increasing damping and uniaxial anisotropy on magnetic field pulse-assisted switching time, energy and field requirements of nanowires with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and yttrium iron garnet-like spin transport properties. A nanowire is initially magnetized using an external magnetic field pulse (write) and self-relaxation. Next, magnetic …
An energy-efficient voltage controlled domain wall device for implementing an artificial neuron and synapse is analyzed using micromagnetic modeling in the presence of room temperature thermal noise. By controlling the domain wall motion utilizing spin transfer or spin orbit torques in association with voltage generated strain control of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in the presence of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, different positions of the domain wall are realized in the free layer of a magnetic tunnel junction to program different synaptic weights. The feasibility of scaling of suc…
Taking into account the coupling between the position of the wall and an internal degree of freedom, namely its phase $ϕ$, we examine, in the rigid wall approximation, the dynamics of a magnetic domain wall subject to a weak pinning potential. We determine the corresponding force-velocity characteristics, which display several unusual features when compared to standard depinning laws. At zero temperature, there exists a bistable regime for low forces, with a logarithmic behavior close to the transition. For weak pinning, there occurs a succession of bistable transitions corresponding to differ…
We demonstrate single photon emission from self-assembled m-plane InGaN quantum dots (QDs) embedded on the side-walls of GaN nanowires. A combination of electron microscopy, cathodoluminescence, time-resolved micro-PL and photon autocorrelation experiments give a thorough evaluation of the QDs structural and optical properties. The QD exhibits anti-bunched emission up to 100 K, with a measured autocorrelation function of g^2(0) = 0.28 (0.03) at 5 K. Studies on a statistically significant number of QDs show that these m-plane QDs exhibit very fast radiative lifetimes (260 +/- 55 ps) suggesting …
Current induced spin-orbit effective magnetic fields in metal/ferromagnet/oxide trilayers provide a new way to manipulate the magnetization, which is an alternative to the conventional current induced spin transfer torque arising from noncollinear magnetization. Ta/CoFeB/MgO structures are expected to be useful for non-volatile memories and logic devices due to its perpendicular anisotropy and large current induced spin-orbit effective fields. However many aspects such as the angular and temperature dependent phenomena of the effective fields are little understood. Here, we evaluate the angula…
Spin-polarized electric current exerts torque on local magnetic spins, resulting in magnetic domain-wall (DW) motion in ferromagnetic nanowires. Such current-driven DW motion opens great opportunities toward next-generation magnetic devices controlled by current instead of magnetic field. However, the nature of the current-driven DW motion--considered qualitatively different from magnetic-field-driven DW motion--remains yet unclear mainly due to the painfully high operation current densities J_OP, which introduce uncontrollable experimental artefacts with serious Joule heating. It is also cruc…
In the framework of four-band envelope-function formalism, developed earlier for spherical semiconductor nanocrystals, we study the electronic structure and optical properties of quantum-confined lead-salt (PbSe and PbS) nanowires (NWs) with a strong coupling between the conduction and the valence bands. We derive spatial quantization equations, and calculate numerically energy levels of spatially quantized states of a transverse electron motion in the plane perpendicular to the NW axis, and electronic subbands developed due to a free longitudinal motion along the NW axis. Using explicit expre…
