We study theoretically the current-induced magnetic domain wall motion in a metallic nanowire with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. The anisotropy can reduce the critical current density of the domain wall motion. We explain the reduction mechanism and identify the maximal reduction conditions. This result facilitates both fundamental studies and device applications of the current- induced domain wall motion.
We study thermally assisted domain wall generation in perpendicular magnetic anisotropy CoFeB trilayer nanowires by the effect of Joule heating. The anomalous Hall effect is utilized to detect magnetization reversal in order to study the domain wall generation. We observe a statistical distribution in the switching process which is consistent with the thermal activation process. Our results show that the proposed method provides an efficient way for generating domain walls in perpendicular magnetic nanowires at predefined locations.
Spinmotive force induced by domain wall motion in perpendicularly magnetized nanowires is numerically demonstrated. We show that using nanowires with large magnetic anisotropy can lead to a high stability of spinmotive force under strong magnetic fields. We observe spinmotive force in the order of tens of microvolt in a multilayered Co/Ni nanowire and in the order of several hundred microvolt in a FePt nanowire; the latter is two orders of magnitude greater than that in permalloy nanowires reported previously. The narrow structure and low mobility of a domain wall under magnetic fields in perp…
Current induced spin-orbit torques have been studied in ferromagnetic nanowires made of 20 nm thick Co/Pd multilayers with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. Using Hall voltage and lock-in measurements, it is found that upon injection of an electric current both in-plane (Slonczewski-like) and perpendicular (field-like) torques build up in the nanowire. The torque efficiencies are found to be as large as 1.17 kOe and 5 kOe at 108 A/cm2 for the in-plane and perpendicular components, respectively, which is surprisingly comparable to previous studies in ultrathin (~ 1 nm) magnetic bilayers. We sh…
Perpendicularly magnetized nanowires exhibit distinct domain wall types depending on the geometry. Wide wires contain Bloch walls, narrow wires Néel walls. Here, the transition region is investigated by direct imaging of the wall structure using high-resolution spin-polarized scanning electron microscopy. An achiral intermediate wall type is discovered that is unpredicted by established theoretical models. With the help of micromagnetic simulations, the formation of this novel wall type is explained.
Current induced domain wall (DW) motion has been investigated in a 600-nm wide nanowire using multilayer film with a structure of Ta(5 nm)/Pd(5 nm)/[CoFe(0.4 nm)/Pd(1.2 nm)]$_{15}$/Ta(5 nm)in terms of anomalous Hall effect measurements. It is found that motion of DWs can be driven by a current density as low as 1.44$\times$10$^{11}$ A.m$^{-2}$. The effect of the Oersted field ($H_{Oe}$) and spin transfer torque field ($H_{ST}$), which are considered as effective fields for DW motion, has been quantitatively separated from the dependence of depinning fields on the current. The results show that…
Spin torque oscillators (STOs) are emerging microwave devices that can potentially be used in spin-logic devices and the next-generation high-speed computing architecture. Thanks to their non-linear nature, STOs are easily tunable by the magnetic field and the dc current. Spin Hall nano-oscillators (SHNOs) are promising types of STOs and most of the current studies focus on localized modes that can be easily excited. Here, we study using micromagnetic simulations, the nature of the spin-torque-induced excitations in nanowire devices made of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) material. Our…
The demonstration of strong photoluminescence polarization anisotropy in semiconducting nanowires embodies both technological promise and scientific challenge. Here we present progress on both fronts through the study of the photoluminescence polarization anisotropy of randomly oriented nanowire ensembles in materials without/with crystalline anisotropy, small/wide bandgap, and both III-V/II-VI chemistry (InP/ZnO nanowires, respectively). Comprehensive control of the polarization anisotropy is realized by dielectric matching with conformally deposited Ta2O5 (dielectric ratios of 9.6:4.41 and 4…
Rectangular nanowires may have domain walls nucleated and moved through them to realize many devices. It has been shown that at a particular width and thickness of a nanowire with perpendicular anisotropy, there is a switch from the domain wall being of Bloch-type to it being of Néel-type. This critical shape can be found through micromagnetics simulations, but here we present an analytic calculation for the energies of both wall types involving two iterations for the demagnetizing energy density. The expressions developed are long, but have the advantage that by simply inputting material para…
Detailed understanding of spin dynamics in magnetic nanomaterials is necessary for developing ultrafast, low-energy and high-density spintronic logic and memory. Here, we develop micromagnetic models and analytical solutions to elucidate the effect of increasing damping and uniaxial anisotropy on magnetic field pulse-assisted switching time, energy and field requirements of nanowires with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and yttrium iron garnet-like spin transport properties. A nanowire is initially magnetized using an external magnetic field pulse (write) and self-relaxation. Next, magnetic …
We have investigated crystalline magnetic anisotropy in the electric field (EF) for the Fe-Pt surface which have a large perpendicular anisotropy, by means of the first-principles approach. The anisotropy is reduced linearly with respect to the inward EF, associated with the induced spin density around the Fe layer. Although the magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE) density reveals the large variation around the atoms, the intrinsic contribution to the MAE is found to mainly come from the Fe layer.
A 20-band sp3d5s* spin-orbit-coupled, semi-empirical, atomistic tight-binding model is used with a semi-classical, ballistic, field-effect-transistor (FET) model, to examine the ON-current variations to size variations of [110] oriented PMOS nanowire devices. Infinitely long, uniform, rectangular nanowires of side dimensions from 3nm to 12nm are examined and significantly different behavior in width vs. height variations are identified and explained. Design regions are identified, which show minor ON-current variations to significant width variations that might occur due to lack of line width …
X-ray spectroscopy measurements have been performed on a series of Pt/Co/AlOx trilayers to investigate the role of Co oxidation in the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy of the Co/AlOx interface. It is observed that high temperature annealing modifies the magnetic properties of the Co layer, inducing an enhancement of the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. The microscopic structural properties are analyzed via X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy, X-ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy measurements. It is shown that annealing enhances the amount of interfacial oxide, wh…
We report on perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) in a Pt/Co2FeAl/MgO sandwiched structure with a thick Co2FeAl layer of 2-2.5 nm. The PMA is thermally stable that the anisotropy energy density Ku is 1.3{\times}106 erg/cm3 for the structure with 2 nm Co2FeAl after annealing at 350 oC. The thicknesses of Co2FeAl and MgO layers greatly affect the PMA. Our results provide an effective way to realize relative thick perpendicularly magnetized Heusler alloy films.
Magnetic dissipative droplets are localized, strongly nonlinear dynamical modes excited in nano-contact spin valves with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. These modes find potential application in nanoscale structures for magnetic storage and computation, but dissipative droplet studies have so far been limited to extended thin films. Here, numerical and asymptotic analyses are used to demonstrate the existence and properties of novel solitons in confined structures. As a nanowire's width is decreased with a nano-contact of fixed size at its center, the observed modes undergo transitions from…
We have investigated dynamic behaviors of the magnetic domain wall under perpendicular magnetic field pulses in ferromagnetic nanowires using micromagnetic simulations. It has been found that the perpendicular magnetic field pulse can trigger the magnetic domain wall motion, where all the field torques are kept to be on the plane of nanowire strip. The magnetic domain wall speed faster than several hundreds meters per second is predicted without the Walker breakdown for the perpendicular magnetic driving field stronger than $200~\mathrm{mT}$. Interestingly, the dynamic behavior of the moving m…
We present angle-dependent measurements of the effective g-factor g* in a Ge-Si core-shell nanowire quantum dot. g* is found to be maximum when the magnetic field is pointing perpendicular to both the nanowire and the electric field induced by local gates. Alignment of the magnetic field with the electric field reduces g* significantly. g* is almost completely quenched when the magnetic field is aligned with the nanowire axis. These findings confirm recent calculations, where the obtained anisotropy is attributed to a Rashba-type spin-orbit interaction induced by heavy-hole light-hole mixing. …
The thermophysical properties near the magnetic phase transition point is of great importance in the study of critical phenomenon. Low-dimensional materials are suggested to hold different thermophysical properties comparing to their bulk counterpart due to the dimension induced quantum confinement and anisotropy. In this work, we measured the thermal conductivity of $α$-Fe$_2$O$_3$ nanowires along [110] direction (growing direction) with temperature from 100K to 150K and found a dip of thermal conductivity near the Morin temperature. We found the thermal conductivity near Morin temperature va…
One and two-electron systems confined in a single and coupled quantum dots defined within a nanowire with a finite radius are studied in the context of spin-orbit coupling effects. Anisotropy of the spin-orbit interaction is discussed in terms of the system geometry and orientation of the external magnetic field vector. We find that there are easy and hard spin polarization axes and in the quantum dot with strong lateral confinement electron spin becomes well defined in spite of the presence of spin-orbit coupling. We present an analytical solution for the one-dimensional limit and study its v…
To address thermal stability issues for spintronic devices with a reduced size, we investigate spin-orbit torque in Co/Pt multilayers with strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. Note that the spin-orbit torque arises from the global imbalance of the spin currents from the top and bottom interfaces for each Co layer. By inserting Ta or Cu layers to strengthen the top-down asymmetry, the spin-orbit torque efficiency can be greatly modified without compromised perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. Above all, the efficiency builds up as the number of layers increases, realizing robust thermal stab…
We calculate the local quasi-particle current of a Majorana state in a planar hybrid (superconductor-semiconductor) nanowire. In absence of perpendicular components of the magnetic field the current flows in circular trajectories without a preferred orientation. On the other hand, when a perpendicular component of the magnetic field is present the quasi-particle current circulates surrounding the Majorana density peak with an orientation established by the magnetic field.
Thickness modulation at the edges of nanostructured magnetic thin films is shown to have important effects on their perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. Thin film wires with tapered edges were made from [Co/Pd]20 multilayers or L10-FePt films using liftoff with a double layer resist. The effect of edge taper on the reversal process was studied using magnetic force microscopy and micromagnetic modeling. In [Co/Pd]20 the anisotropy was lower in the tapered edge regions which switched at a lower reverse field compared to the center of the wire. The L10-FePt wires showed opposite behavior with the t…
We demonstrate fully tunable single and double quantum dots in a one-dimensional hole system based on undoped Ge/Si core-shell nanowire heterostructures. The local hole density along the nanowire is controlled by applying voltages to five top gate electrodes with a periodicity of 80 nm, insulated from the wire by a 20 nm-thick HfO_2 dielectric film. Low-temperature transport measurements were used to investigate the magnetic field dependence of Coulomb blockade peaks in a single quantum dot and indicate a strongly anisotropic g-factor with |g_para| = 0.60 +/- 0.03 and |g_perp| < 0.12.
The determination and control of the electron $g$-factor in semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) are fundamental prerequisites in modern concepts of spintronics and spin-based quantum computation. We study the dependence of the $g$-factor on the orientation of an external magnetic field in quantum dots (QDs) formed between two metallic contacts on stacking fault free InAs nanowires. We extract the $g$-factor from the splitting of Kondo resonances and find that it varies continuously in the range between $|g^*| = 5$ and 15.
We use the $\mathbf{k} \cdot \mathbf{p}$ theory and the envelope function approach to evaluate the Rashba spin-orbit coupling induced in a semiconductor nanowire by a magnetic field at different orientations, taking explicitely into account the prismatic symmetry of typical nano-crystals. We make the case for the strongly spin-orbit-coupled InAs semiconductor nanowires and investigate the anisotropy of the spin-orbit constant with respect to the field direction. At sufficiently high magnetic fields perpendicular to the nanowire, a 6-fold anisotropy results from the interplay between the orbita…
A prototype Hamiltonian for the generic patterned magnetic structures, of dipolar interaction with perpendicular anisotropy, is investigated within the finite-size framework by Landau-Lifshift-Gilbert classical spin dynamics. Modifications on the ground state phase diagram are discussed with an emphasis on the disappearance of continuous degeneracy in the ground state of in-plane phase due to the finite lattice size effect. The symmetry-governed ground state evolution upon the lattice size increase provides a critical insight into the systematic transition to the infinite extreme.
Ta/CoFeB/MgO trilayers with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy are expected to play a key role in the next generation of current and electric field switched memory and logic devices. In this study we use Kerr microscopy alongside electrical transport measurement to gain insight into the underlying switching mechanisms of such devices. We find switching to be a stochastic, domain wall driven process, the speed of which is strongly dependent on the switching current. Kerr imaging shows domain nucleation at the edge of the device which modelling reveals is likely assisted by the perpendicular comp…
Multifunctional materials composed of ultrathin magnetic films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy combined with ferroelectric substrates represent a new approach toward low power, fast, high density spintronics. Here we demonstrate Co/Ni multilayered films with tunable saturation magnetization and perpendicular anisotropy grown directly on ferroelectric PZT [Pb(Zr_xTi_1-x)O_3] substrate plates. Electric fields up to +/- 2 MV/m expand the PZT by 0.1% and generate at least 0.02% in-plane compression in the Co/Ni multilayered film. Modifying the strain with a voltage can reduce the coercive f…
We use broadband ferromagnetic resonance spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction to investigate the fundamental origin of perpendicular anisotropy in Co90Fe10/Ni multilayers. By careful evaluation of the spectroscopic g-factor, we determine the orbital moment along the out-of-plane and in-plane directions. For the multilayers, we find a direct relationship between the orbital moment asymmetry and the perpendicular anisotropy, consistent with the theory of Bruno [P.Bruno, Phys. Rev. B, 39, 865 (1989)]. A systematic x-ray diffraction study revealed the presence of a trigonal strain as high as 0.7 % i…
We present a method to map the saturation magnetization of soft ultrathin films with perpendicular anisotropy, and we illustrate it to assess the compositional dependence of the magnetization of CoFeB(1 nm)/MgO films. The method relies on the measurement of the dipolar repulsion of parallel domain walls that define a linear domain. The film magnetization is linked to the field compressibility of the domain. The method also yields the minimal distance between two walls before their merging, which sets a practical limit to the storage density in spintronic devices using domain walls as storage e…
We have investigated Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) induced ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) assisted Spin Transfer Torque (STT) switching of perpendicular MTJ (p-MTJ) with inhomogeneities using micromagnetic simulations that include the effect of thermal noise. With suitable frequency excitation, the SAW can induce ferromagnetic resonance in magnetostrictive materials, and the magnetization can precesses in a cone with high deflection from the perpendicular direction. With incorporation of inhomogeneity via lateral anisotropy variation as well as room temperature thermal noise, the magnetization pr…
The perpendicular magnetic anisotropy K$_e$$_f$$_f$, magnetization reversal, and field-driven domain wall velocity in the creep regime are modified in Pt/Co(0.85-1.0 nm)/Pt thin films by strain applied via piezoelectric transducers. K$_e$$_f$$_f$, measured by the extraordinary Hall effect, is reduced by 10 kJ/m$^3$ by tensile strain out-of-plane ε$_z$ = 9 x 10-4, independently of the film thickness, indicating a dominant volume contribution to the magnetostriction. The same strain reduces the coercive field by 2-4 Oe, and increases the domain wall velocity measured by wide-field Kerr microscop…
Using first-principles calculations, we elucidate microscopic mechanisms of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA)in Fe/MgO magnetic tunnel junctions through evaluation of orbital and layer resolved contributions into the total anisotropy value. It is demonstrated that the origin of the large PMA values is far beyond simply considering the hybridization between Fe-3d$ and O-2p orbitals at the interface between the metal and the insulator. On-site projected analysis show that the anisotropy energy is not localized at the interface but it rather propagates into the bulk showing an attenuating o…
Perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) and dynamic magnetization reversal process in [CoFeB $t$ nm/Pd 1.0 nm]$_n$ ($t$ = 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1.0, and 1.2 nm; $n$ = 2 - 20) multilayer films have been studied by means of magnetic hysteresis and Kerr effect measurements. Strong and controllable PMA with an effective uniaxial anisotropy up to 7.7$\times$ 10$^6$ J.m$^{-3}$ and a saturation magnetization as low as 200 emu/cc are achieved. Surface/interfacial anisotropy of CoFeB/Pd interfaces, the main contribution to the PMA, is separated from the effective uniaxial anisotropy of the films, and appears …
We report strongly enhanced perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) of Co films by graphene coating from both first-principles and experiments. Our calculations show that graphene can dramatically boost the surface anisotropy of Co films up to twice the value of its pristine counterpart and can extend the out-of-plane effective anisotropy up to unprecedented thickness of 25~Å. These findings are supported by our experiments on graphene coating on Co films grown on Ir substrate. Furthermore, we report layer-resolved and orbital-hybridization-resolved anisotropy analysis which help understanding…
The perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) arising at the interface between ferromagnetic transition metals and metallic oxides are investigated via first-principles calculations. In this work very large values of PMA up to 3 erg/cm$^2$ at Fe$|$MgO interfaces are reported in agreement with recent experiments. The origin of PMA is attributed to overlap between O-$p_z$ and transition metal $d_{z^2}$ orbitals hybridized with $d_{xz(yz)}$ orbitals with stronger spin-orbit coupling induced splitting around the Fermi level for perpendicular magnetization orientation. Furthemore, it is shown that th…
The period of magnetization oscillations that occur near the surface of a nanotube or nanowire under the influence of surface magnetic anisotropy is determined by means of numerical simulation as a function of nanowire geometry and material parameters. The hopping mode is observed for stationary movement of a head-to-head domain wall along nanowire axis in applied magnetic field. The average speed of the domain wall in the hopping mode is found to be several times less than the stationary velocity of the wall in the absence of surface anisotropy.
We study the spectral characteristics of spin current nano-oscillators based on the Pt/[Co/Ni] magnetic multilayer with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. By varying the applied magnetic field and current, both localized and propagating spin wave modes of the oscillation are achieved. At small fields, we observe an abrupt onset of the modulation sidebands. We use micromagnetic simulations to identify this state as a dynamical magnetic skyrmion stabilized in the active device region by spin current injection, whose current-induced dynamics is accompanied by the gyrotropic motion of the core due…
Spin orbit torque (SOT) provides an efficient way of generating spin current that promises to significantly reduce the current required for switching nanomagnets. However, an in-plane current generated SOT cannot deterministically switch a perpendicularly polarized magnet due to symmetry reasons. On the other hand, perpendicularly polarized magnets are preferred over in-plane magnets for high-density data storage applications due to their significantly larger thermal stability in ultra-scaled dimensions. Here we show that it is possible switch a perpendicularly polarized magnet by SOT without …
We report on a strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in [CoFe 0.4nm/Pd t]6 (t = 1.0-2.0 nm) multilayers fabricated by DC sputtering in a ultrahigh vacuum chamber. Saturation magnetization, $M_s$, and uniaxial anisotropy, $K_u$, of the multilayers decrease with increasing the spacing thickness, with a $M_s$ of 155 emu/cc and a $K_u$ of 1.14$\times 10^5$ J/m$^3$ at a spacing thickness of t = 2 nm. X-ray absorption spectroscopy and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurements reveal that spin and orbital magnetic moments of Co and Fe in CoFe film decrease as function of Pd thickness, indicat…
A characteristic dependence of voltage control of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (VCMA) on oxygen migration at Fe/MgO interfaces was revealed by performing systematic {\it ab initio} study of the energetics of the oxygen path around the interface. We find that the surface anisotropy energy exhibits a Boltzmann sigmoidal behavior as a function of the migrated O-atoms concentration. The obtained variation of the VCMA efficiency factor $β$ reveals a saturation limit beyond a critical concentration of migrated O, about $54\%$, at which the anisotropy switches from perpendicular to in plane. Fur…
We investigate the magnetic properties of a composite comprising of ferromagnetic Cobalt nanowires embedded in nanoporous anodized alumina template. We observe unusual increase in, the saturation magnetization and the coercive field, of the nanowires below 100 K. We also report the appearance of an unusual exchange bias effect in nanowires below 100 K. We argue our results can be understood on the basis of a competition between different magnetic energy scales induced by significant stresses acting on the nanowires at low temperatures. The composite behaves as an effective medium in which the …
We report that strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy of the ferromagnetic layer in a W/CoFeB/MgO multilayer structure can be established by inserting a Hf layer as thin as 0.25 nm between the W and CoFeB layers. The Hf spacer also allows transmission of spin currents generated by an in-plane charge current in the W layer to apply strong spin torque on the CoFeB, thereby enabling current-driven magnetic switching. The antidamping-like and field-like components of the spin torque exerted on a 1 nm CoFeB layer are of comparable magnitudes in this geometry. Both components originate from the sp…
Recent analytical and numerical work on field driven domain wall propagation in nanowires has shown that for large transverse anisotropy and sufficiently large applied fields the Walker profile becomes unstable before the breakdown field, giving way to a slower stationary domain wall. We perform an asymptotic expansion of the Landau Lifshitz Gilbert equation for large transverse magnetic anisotropy and show that the asymptotic dynamics reproduces this behavior. At low applied field the speed increases linearly with the field and the profile is the classic Landau profile. Beyond a critical valu…
The momentum and spin of charge carriers in the topological insulators are constrained to be perpendicular to each other due to the strong spin-orbit coupling. We have investigated this unique spin-momentum locking property in Sb2Te3 topological insulator nanowires by injecting spin-polarized electrons through magnetic tunnel junction electrodes. Non-local voltage measurements exhibit a symmetry with respect to the magnetic field applied perpendicular to the nanowire channel, which is remarkably different from that of a non-local measurement in a channel that lacks spin-momentum locking. In st…
The critical current of a superconductor can depend on the direction of current flow due to magnetochiral anisotropy when both inversion and time-reversal symmetry are broken, an effect known as the superconducting (SC) diode effect. Here, we consider one-dimensional (1D) systems in which superconductivity is induced via the proximity effect. In both topological insulator and Rashba nanowires, the SC diode effect due to a magnetic field applied along the spin-polarization axis and perpendicular to the nanowire provides a measure of inversion symmetry breaking in the presence of a superconducto…
Cylindrical magnetic nanowires with large transversal magnetocrystalline anisotropy have been shown to sustain non-trivial magnetic configurations resulting from the interplay of spatial confinement, exchange, and anisotropies. Exploiting these peculiar 3D spin configurations and their solitonic inhomogeneities are prospected to improve magnetization switching in future spintronics, such as power-saving magnetic memory and logic applications. Here we employ holographic vector field electron tomography to reconstruct the remanent magnetic states in CoNi nanowires with 10 nm resolution in 3D, wi…
We report the magnetic properties of yttrium iron garnet (YIG) thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition technique. The films were deposited on Si (100) substrates in the range of 15-50 nm thickness. Magnetic characterizations were investigated by ferromagnetic resonance spectra. Perpendicular magnetic easy axis was achieved up to 50 nm thickness. We observed that the perpendicular anisotropy values decreased by increasing the film thickness. The origin of the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) was attributed to the texture and the lattice distortion in the YIG thin films. We anticipate…
We have analyzed the expressed manifestation of the anisotropy of surface energy density in the dynamics of ultrathin nanowires, which break up into disjointed clusters when annealed below their melting temperature. The breakup process is studied for different temperatures and orientations of the nanowire axis relative to its internal crystal structure using the Monte Carlo kinetic method. We have also presented an approximate analytical model of the instability of nanowires. Generally, the interpretation of experimental results refers to the theoretical model developed by Nichols and Mullins,…
Transition metal ferromagnetic films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) have ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) linewidths that are one order of magnitude larger than soft magnetic materials, such as pure iron (Fe) and permalloy (NiFe) thin films. A broadband FMR setup has been used to investigate the origin of the enhanced linewidth in Ni$|$Co multilayer films with PMA. The FMR linewidth depends linearly on frequency for perpendicular applied fields and increases significantly when the magnetization is rotated into the film plane. Irradiation of the film with Helium ions decreases the PM…
Engineering magnetic anisotropy in a ferro- or ferrimagnetic (FM) thin film is crucial in spintronic device. One way to modify the magnetic anisotropy is through the surface of the FM thin film. Here, we report the emergence of a perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) induced by interfacial interactions in a heterostructure comprised of a garnet ferrimagnet, Y3Fe5O12 (YIG), and the low-symmetry, high spin orbit coupling (SOC) transition metal dichalcogenide, WTe2. At the same time, we also observed an enhancement in Gilbert damping in the WTe2 covered YIG area. Both the magnitude of interface…
We report the fabrication of perpendicular ferromagnetic electrodes for tunneling devices consist of van der Waals heterostructure. We found MgO/Co/Pt films on Hexagonal BN shows perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) with the easy axis perpendicular to the substrate. Vacuum annealing enhances the perpendicular anisotropy. The easy axis along the perpendicular direction persists up to room temperature with the Pt layer thickness ranges from 1.5 to 5 nm. We employed the PMA electrodes to construct tunneling devices on graphene and monolayer WSe2, where spin injection characteristics and field …
We investigate, angle dependent, the magnetoresistance (MR) of individual self-assembled ferromagnetic GaAs/(Ga,Mn)As core-shell nanowires at cryogenic temperatures. The shape of the MR traces and the observed strong anisotropies in transport can be ascribed to the interplay of the negative magnetoresistance effect and a strong uniaxial anisotropy with the magnetic easy direction pointing along the wire axis. The magnetoresistance can be well described by a quantitative analysis based on the concept of the effective magnetic field, usually used to describe ferromagnetic resonance phenomena. Th…
Orbital effects of a magnetic field in a proximitized semiconductor nanowire are studied in the context of the spatial extent of Majorana bound states. We develop analytical model that explains the impact of concurring effects of paramagnetic coupling of the nanowire bands via the kinetic energy operator and spin-orbit interaction on the Majorana modes. We find, that the perpendicular field, so far considered as to be detrimental to the Majorana fermion formation, is in fact helpful in establishing the topological zero-energy-modes in a finite system due to significant decrease in the Majorana…
We investigate magnetic anisotropy and magnetization reversal mechanism in chromium telluride thin films grown by molecular beam epitaxy. We report existence of strong perpendicular anisotropy in these thin films, along with a relatively strong second order anisotropy contribution. The angular variation of the switching field observed from the magnetoresistance measurement is explained quantitatively using a one-dimensional defect model. The model reveals the relative roles of nucleation and pinning in the magnetization reversal, depending on the applied field orientation. Micromagnetic simula…
