We use spin torque ferromagnetic resonance to measure the spectral properties of dipole-exchange spin waves in permalloy nanowires. Our measurements reveal that geometric confinement has a profound effect on the damping of spin waves in the nanowire geometry. The damping parameter of the lowest-energy quantized spin wave mode depends on applied magnetic field in a resonant way and exhibits a maximum at a field that increases with decreasing nanowire width. This enhancement of damping originates from a nonlinear resonant three-magnon confluence process allowed at a particular bias field value determined by quantization of the spin wave spectrum in the nanowire geometry.
We investigate the spin dynamics including Gilbert damping in the ferromagnetic nanowire arrays. We have measured the ferromagnetic resonance of ferromagnetic nanowire arrays using vector-network analyzer ferromagnetic resonance (VNA-FMR) and analyzed the results with the micromagnetic simulations. We find excellent agreement between the experimental VNA-FMR spectra and micromagnetic simulations result for various applied magnetic fields. We find that the demagnetization factor for longitudinal conditions, Nz (Ny) increases (decreases) as decreasing the nanowire width in the micromagnetic simu…
Based on the semiclassical model Hamiltonian of the surface plasmon polariton and the nonequilibrium Green-function approach, we present a microscopic kinetic theory to study the influence of the electron scattering on the dynamics of the surface plasmon polariton in semiconductor nanowires. The damping of the surface plasmon polariton originates from the resonant absorption by the electrons (Landau damping), and the corresponding damping exhibits size-dependent oscillations and distinct temperature dependence without any scattering. The scattering influences the damping by introducing a broad…
We report the experimental observation of quantized conductance by Rashba bands at the surface of 50-nm Bi nanowires. With increasing magnetic fields along the wire axis, the wires exhibit a stepwise increase of conductance with as many as four distinct plateaus together with oscillatory thermopower. The observations can be accounted for by the increase of the number of propagating surface modes. The modes have very high mobility and are associated with Aharonov-Bohm interference around the perimeter consistently with theory of quasiballistic one-dimensional nanowires considering that Lorentz …
We report a new template electroplating method for fabricating reversible atomic contacts between a single nanowire and a macroscopic contact pad. In comparison to typical template methods using a standing-alone anode, we directly evaporate the anode on one of the porous membrane surfaces. Single nanowires, upon emerging from the pores, make reversible atomic contacts with the on-membrane anode via a self-terminating mechanism. Quantized conductance steps have been observed in a controlled fashion during deposition and dissolution. This method can potentially be applied for the controlled fabr…
We report conductance and supercurrent of InAs nanowires coupled to Al-superconducting electrodes with short channel lengths and good Ohmic contacts. The nanowires are suspended 15\,nm above a local gate electrode. The charge density in the nanowires can be controlled by a small change in the gate voltage. For large negative gate voltages, the number of conducting channels is reduced gradually and we observe a stepwise decrease of both conductance and critical current before the conductance vanishes completely.
Detailed understanding of spin dynamics in magnetic nanomaterials is necessary for developing ultrafast, low-energy and high-density spintronic logic and memory. Here, we develop micromagnetic models and analytical solutions to elucidate the effect of increasing damping and uniaxial anisotropy on magnetic field pulse-assisted switching time, energy and field requirements of nanowires with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and yttrium iron garnet-like spin transport properties. A nanowire is initially magnetized using an external magnetic field pulse (write) and self-relaxation. Next, magnetic …
We launch surface plasmons from one end of a silver nanowire by asymmetric illumination with white light and use plasmon-to-light scattering at the nanowire ends to probe spectroscopically the plasmonic Fabry-Perot wire modes. The spectral positions of the maxima and minima in the scattered intensity from both nanowire ends are found to be either in phase or out-of phase, depending on the nanowire length and the spectral range. This behavior can be explained by a generalized Fabry-Perot model. The turnover-point between the two regimes is sensitive to the surface plasmon round trip losses and …
Based on the Landauer formalism, we demonstrate that the thermal conductance due to the propagation of surface phonon-polaritons along a polar nanowire is independent of the material characteristics and is given by Pi^2kB^2T/3h. The giant propagation length of these energy carriers establishes that this quantization holds not only for a temperature much smaller than 1 K, as is the case of electrons and phonons, but also for temperatures comparable to room temperature, which can significantly facilitate its observation and application in the thermal management of nanoscale electronics and photo…
Conductance at zero source-drain voltage bias in InSb nanowire/NbTiN superconductor devices exhibits peaks that are close to a quantized value of $2e^2/h$. The nearly quantized resonances evolve in the tunnel barrier strength, magnetic field and magnetic field orientation in a way consistent with Majorana zero modes. Our devices feature two tunnel probes on both ends of the nanowire separated by a 400 nm nanowire segment covered by the superconductor. We only find nearly quantized zero bias peaks localized to one end of the nanowire, while conductance dips are observed for the same parameters …
Antisymmetric exchange interactions lead to non-reciprocal spin-wave propagation. As a result, spin waves confined in a nanostructure are not standing waves; they have a time-dependent phase, because counter-propagating waves of the same frequency have different wavelengths. We report on a Brillouin light scattering (BLS) study of confined spin waves in Co/Pt nanowires with strong Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions (DMI). Spin-wave quantization in narrow ($\lesssim 200$ nm width) wires dramatically reduces the frequency shift between BLS Stokes and anti-Stokes lines associated with the scatter…
Energetics and conductance in jellium modelled nanowires are investigated using the local-density-functional-based shell correction method. In analogy with studies of other finite-size fermion systems, e.g., simple-metal clusters or He-3 clusters, we find that the energetics of the wire as a function of its radius (transverse reduced dimension) leads to formation of self-selecting magic wire configurations (MWC's, i.e., discrete sequence of wire radii with enhanced stability), originating from quantization of the electronic spectrum, namely formation of subbands which are the analogs of electr…
Energetics and quantized conductance in jellium modeled nanowires are investigated using the local density functional based shell correction method, extending our previous study of uniform in shape wires [C. Yannouleas and U. Landman, J. Phys. Chem. B 101, 5780 (1997)] to wires containing a variable shaped constricted region. The energetics of the wire (sodium) as a function of the length of the volume conserving, adiabatically shaped constriction leads to formation of self selecting magic wire configurations. The variations in the energy result in oscillations in the force required to elongat…
We study longitudinal transport in Weyl semimetal nanowires, both in the absence and in the presence of a magnetic flux threading the nanowires. We identify two qualitatively different regimes of transport with respect to the chemical potential in the nanowires. In the "surface regime", for low doping, most of the conductance occurs through the Fermi-arc surface states, and it rises in steps of one quantum of conductance as a function of the chemical potential; furthermore, with varying flux the conductance changes in steps of one quantum of conductance with characteristic Fabry-Pérot interfer…
Magnetic skyrmions are topologically stable whirlpool-like spin textures that offer great promise as information carriers for future ultra-dense memory and logic devices1-4. To enable such applications, particular attention has been focused on the skyrmions properties in highly confined geometry such as one dimensional nanowires5-8. Hitherto it is still experimentally unclear what happens when the width of the nanowire is comparable to that of a single skyrmion. Here we report the experimental demonstration of such scheme, where magnetic field-driven skyrmion cluster (SC) states with small num…
Majorana zero modes can appear at the wire ends of a 1D topological superconductor and manifest themselves as a quantized zero-bias conductance peak in the tunneling spectroscopy of normal-superconductor junctions. However, in superconductor-semiconductor hybrid nanowires, zero-bias conductance peaks may arise owing to topologically trivial mechanisms as well, mimicking the Majorana-induced topological peak in many aspects. In this work, we systematically investigate the characteristics of zero-bias conductance peaks for topological Majorana bound states, trivial quasi-Majorana bound states an…
Semiconducting nanowires (NWs) are a versatile, highly tunable material platform at the heart of many new developments in nanoscale and quantum physics. Here, we demonstrate charge pumping, i.e., the controlled transport of individual electrons through an InAs NW quantum dot (QD) device at frequencies up to $1.3\,$GHz. The QD is induced electrostatically in the NW by a series of local bottom gates in a state of the art device geometry. A periodic modulation of a single gate is enough to obtain a dc current proportional to the frequency of the modulation. The dc bias, the modulation amplitude a…
The current mediated domain-wall dynamics in a thin ferromagnetic wire is investigated. We derive the effective equations of motion of the domain wall. They are used to study the possibility to optimize the power supplied by electric current for the motion of domain walls in a nanowire. We show that a certain resonant time-dependent current moving a domain wall can significantly reduce the Joule heating in the wire, and thus it can lead to a novel proposal for the most energy efficient memory devices. We discuss how Gilbert damping, non-adiabatic spin transfer torque, and the presence of Dzyal…
By studying the time-dependent axial and radial growth of InSb nanowires, we map the conditions for the synthesis of single-crystalline InSb nanocrosses by molecular beam epitaxy. Low-temperature electrical measurements of InSb nanocross devices with local gate control on individual terminals exhibit quantized conductance and are used to probe the spatial distribution of the conducting channels. Tuning to a situation where the nanocross junction is connected by few-channel quantum point contacts in the connecting nanowire terminals, we show that transport through the junction is ballistic exce…
The current-induced motion of a domain wall in a semicircle nanowire with applied Zeeman field is investigated. Starting from a micromagnetic model we derive an analytical solution which characterizes the domain-wall motion as a harmonic oscillation. This solution relates the micromagnetic material parameters with the dynamical characteristics of a harmonic oscillator, i.e., domain-wall mass, resonance frequency, damping constant, and force acting on the wall. For wires with strong curvature the dipole moment of the wall as well as its geometry influence the eigenmodes of the oscillator. Based…

SrTiO$_3$-based heterointerfaces support quasi-two-dimensional (2D) electron systems that are analogous to III-V semiconductor heterostructures, but also possess superconducting, magnetic, spintronic, ferroelectric, and ferroelastic degrees of freedom. Despite these rich properties, the relatively low mobilities of 2D complex-oxide interfaces appear to preclude ballistic transport in 1D. Here we show that the 2D LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interface can support quantized ballistic transport of electrons and (non-superconducting) electron pairs within quasi-1D structures that are created using a well-e…
Resonant Raman spectroscopy is realized on closely spaced nanowire based quantum wells. Phonon quantization consistent with 2.4 nm thick quantum wells is observed, in agreement with cross-section transmission electron microscopy measurements and photoluminescence experiments. The creation of a high density plasma within the quantized structures is demonstrated by the observation of coupled plasmon-phonon modes. The density of the plasma and thereby the plasmon-phonon interaction is controlled with the excitation power. This work represents a base for further studies on confined high density ch…

We study the fractional boundary charges (FBCs) occurring in nanowires in the presence of periodically modulated chemical potentials and connect them to the FBCs occurring in a two-dimensional electron gas in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field in the integer quantum Hall effect (QHE) regime. First, we show that in nanowires the FBCs take fractional values and change linearly as a function of phase offset of the modulated chemical potential. This linear slope takes quantized values determined by the period of the modulation and depends only on the number of the filled bands. Next, w…
Four-terminal resistance measurements have been carried out on Zn nanowires formed using electron-beam lithography. When driven resistive by current, these wires re-enter the superconducting state upon application of small magnetic fields. The data are qualitatively different from those of previous experiments on superconducting nanowires, which revealed either negative magnetoresistance near T_{c} or magnetic field enhanced critical currents. We suggest that our observations are associated with the damping of phase slip processes by the enhancement of dissipation by the quasiparticle conducta…
A longstanding goal of spintronics is to inject, coherently transport, and detect spins in a semiconductor nanowire where a SINGLE quantized subband is occupied at room temperature. Here, we report achieving this goal in 50-nm diameter InSb nanowires by demonstrating both the spin-valve and the Hanle effect. The spin relaxation time in the nanowires was found to have increased by an order of magnitude over what has been reported in bulk and quantum wells due to the suppression of D'yakonov-Perel' spin relaxation as a result of single subband occupancy. These experiments raise hopes for the rea…
In bilayer nanowires consisting of a ferromagnetic layer and a non-magnetic layer with strong spin-orbit coupling, currents create torques on the magnetization beyond those found in simple ferromagnetic nanowires. The resulting magnetic dynamics appear to require torques that can be separated into two terms, damping-like and field-like. The damping-like torque is typically derived from models describing the bulk spin Hall effect and the spin transfer torque, and the field-like torque is typically derived from a Rashba model describing interfacial spin-orbit coupling. We derive a model based on…
Ballistic electron transport is a key requirement for existence of a topological phase transition in proximitized InSb nanowires. However, measurements of quantized conductance as direct evidence of ballistic transport have so far been obscured due to the increased chance of backscattering in one dimensional nanowires. We show that by improving the nanowire-metal interface as well as the dielectric environment we can consistently achieve conductance quantization at zero magnetic field. Additionally, studying the sub-band evolution in a rotating magnetic field reveals an orbital degeneracy betw…
We consider dc-electronic transport through a nanowire suspended between normal- and spin-polarized metal leads in the presence of an external magnetic field. We show that magnetomotive coupling between the electrical current through the nanowire and vibrations of the wire may result in self excitation of mechanical vibrations. The self-excitation mechanism is based on correlations between the occupancy of the quantized electronic energy levels inside the nanowire and the velocity of the nanowire. We derive conditions for the occurrence of the instability and find stable regimes of mechanical …
We theoretically study transport properties of nanowires with the Dresselhaus [110] spin-orbit coupling under the in-plane Zeeman potential and the proximity-induced s-wave pair potential. In the topologically nontrivial phase, the nanowire hosts the Majorana fermions at its edges and the number of the Majorana bound states is equal to the number propagating channels (Nc). When we attach a normal metal to the superconductor, such Majorana bound states penetrate into the dirty normal segment and form the Nc resonant transmission channels there. We show that chiral symmetry of the electronic sta…
The dynamics of the low energy excitations in a ferromagnet is studied in case a temperature gradient is coupled to the local magnetization. Due to the different time scales of changing temperature and magnetization it is argued that only the coupling between the spatially varying part of the temperature field and the magnetization is relevant. Using variational principles the evolution equation for the magnetic system is found which is strongly influenced by the local temperature profile. The system offers damped spin wave excitations where the strength of damping is determined by the magneto…
We study the superconducting proximity effect in an InAs nanowire contacted by Ta-based superconducting electrodes. Using local bottom gates, we control the potential landscape along the nanowire, tuning its conductance to a quasi-ballistic regime. At high magnetic field ($B$), we observe approximately quantized conductance plateaus associated with the first two spin-polarized one-dimensional modes. For $B < 1$ T, the onset of superconductivity occurs in concomitance with the development of sizeable charge localization leading to a 0.7-type conductance anomaly. In this regime, the proximity su…
We derive the complete expression of nonlocal damping in noncollinear magnetization due to the nonuniform spin current pumped by precessional magnetization and incorporate it into a generalized Thiele equation to study its effects on the dynamics of the transverse and vortex domain walls (DWs) in ferromagnetic nanowires. We demonstrate that the transverse component of nonlocal damping slows down the field-driven DW propagation and increases the Walker breakdown field whereas it is neglected in many previous works in literature. The experimentally measured DW mobility variation with the damping…
Using density functional theory implemented within a tight-binding linear muffin-tin orbital method we perform calculations of electronic, magnetic and transport properties of ferromagnetic free-standing fcc Co wires with diameters up to 1.5 nm. We show that finite-size effects play an important role in these nanowires resulting in oscillatory behavior of electronic charge and the magnetization as a function of the wire thickness, and a non-monotonic behavior of spin-dependent quantized conductance. We calculate the magnetoresistance (MR) of a domain wall (DW) modeled by a spin-spiral region o…
We present a joint experimental and theoretical study of parametric resonance of spin wave eigenmodes in Ni$_{80}$Fe$_{20}$/Pt bilayer nanowires. Using electrically detected magnetic resonance, we measure the spectrum of spin wave eigenmodes in transversely magnetized nanowires and study parametric excitation of these eigenmodes by a microwave magnetic field. We also develop an analytical theory of spin wave eigenmodes and their parametric excitation in the nanowire geometry that takes into account magnetic dilution at the nanowire edges. We measure tuning of the parametric resonance threshold…
The point-like nature and exquisite magnetic field sensitivity of the nitrogen vacancy (NV) center in diamond can provide information about the inner workings of magnetic nanocircuits in complement with traditional transport techniques. Here we use a single NV in bulk diamond to probe the stray field of a ferromagnetic nanowire controlled by spin transfer (ST) torques. We first report an unambiguous measurement of ST tuned, parametrically driven, large-amplitude magnetic oscillations. At the same time, we demonstrate that such magnetic oscillations alone can directly drive NV spin transitions,…
The adiabatic topological pumping is proposed by periodically modulating a semiconductor nanowire double-quantum-dot chain. We demonstrate that the quantized charge transport can be achieved by a nontrivial modulation of the quantum-dot well and barrier potentials. When the quantum-dot well potential is replaced by a time-dependent staggered magnetic field, the topological spin pumping can be realized by periodically modulating the barrier potentials and magnetic field. We also demonstrate that in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit interaction, the double-quantum-dot chain can be used to implem…
SnTe materials are one of the most flexible material platforms for exploring the interplay of topology and different types of symmetry breaking. We study symmetry-protected topological states in SnTe nanowires in the presence of various combinations of Zeeman field, s-wave superconductivity and inversion-symmetry-breaking field. We uncover the origin of robust corner states and hinge states in the normal state. In the presence of superconductivity, we find inversion-symmetry-protected gapless bulk Majorana modes, which give rise to quantized thermal conductance in ballistic wires. By introduci…
Spin torque from spin current applied to a nanoscale region of a ferromagnet can act as negative magnetic damping and thereby excite self-oscillations of its magnetization. In contrast, spin torque uniformly applied to the magnetization of an extended ferromagnetic film does not generate self-oscillatory magnetic dynamics but leads to reduction of the saturation magnetization. Here we report studies of the effect of spin torque on a system of intermediate dimensionality - a ferromagnetic nanowire. We observe coherent self-oscillations of magnetization in a ferromagnetic nanowire serving as the…
Relaxation of linear magnetization dynamics is well described by the viscous Gilbert damping processes. However, for strong excitations, nonlinear damping processes such as the decay via magnon-magnon interactions emerge and trigger additional relaxation channels. Here, we use space- and time-resolved microfocused Brillouin light scattering spectroscopy and micromagnetic simulations to investigate the nonlinear relaxation of strongly driven propagating spin waves in yttrium iron garnet nanoconduits. We show that the nonlinear magnon relaxation in this highly quantized system possesses intermod…
We investigate the influence of Rashba spin-orbit coupling in a parabolic nanowire modulated by longitudinal periodic potential. The modulation potential can be obtained from realistically grown supperlattices (SLs). Our study shows that the Rashba spin-orbit interaction induces the level crossing point in the parabolic nanowire SLs. We estimate large anticrossing width (approximately 117 $μeV$) between singlet-triplet states. We study the phonon and electromagnetic field mediated spin transition rates in the parabolic nanowire SLs. We report that the phonon mediated spin transition rate is se…
We introduce the topological mirror excitonic insulator as a new type of interacting topological crystalline phase in one dimension. Its mirror-symmetry-protected topological properties are driven by exciton physics, and it manifests in the quantized bulk polarization and half-charge modes on the boundary. And the bosonization analysis is performed to demonstrate its robustness against strong correlation effects in one dimension. Besides, we also show that Rashba nanowires and Dirac semimetal nanowires could provide ideal experimental platforms to realize this new topological mirror excitonic …
In this work, we study the microwave field driven antiferromagnetic domain wall motion in an antiferromagnetic nanowire, using the numerical calculations based on a classical Heisenberg spin model. We show that a proper combination of a static magnetic field plus an oscillating field perpendicular to the nanowire axis is sufficient to drive the domain wall propagation along the nanowire with the axial magnetic anisotropy. More importantly, the drift velocity at the resonance frequency is comparable to that induced by temperature gradients, suggesting that microwave field can be a very promisin…
We report CMOS-compatible quantized current sources (electron pumps) fabricated with nanowires (NWs) on 300 mm SOI wafers. Unlike other Al, GaAs or Si based metallic or semiconductor pumps, the fabrication does not rely on electron-beam lithography. The structure consists of two gates in series on the nanowire and the only difference with the SOI nanowire process lies in long (40 nm) nitride spacers. As a result a single, silicided island gets isolated between the gates and transport is dominated by Coulomb blockade at cryogenic temperatures thanks to the small size and therefore capacitance o…
Low-temperature magnetotransport measurements are performed on GaAs/InSb core-shell nanowires. The nanowires were self-catalyzed grown by molecular beam epitaxy. The conductance measurements as a function of back-gate voltage show an ambipolar behavior comprising an insulating range in between the transition from the p-type to the n-type region. Simulations based on a self-consistent Schrödinger--Poisson solver revealed that the ambipolar characteristics originate from a Fermi level dependent occupation of hole and electron states within the approximately circular quantum well formed in the In…
We investigate the nonlinear mechanics of a bimetallic, optically absorbing SiN-Nb nanowire in the presence of incident laser light and a reflecting Si mirror. Situated in a standing wave of optical intensity and subject to photothermal forces, the nanowire undergoes self-induced oscillations at low incident light thresholds of $<1\, \rm{μW}$ due to engineered strong temperature-position ($T$-$z$) coupling. Along with inducing self-oscillation, laser light causes large changes to the mechanical resonant frequency $ω_0$ and equilibrium position $z_0$ that cannot be neglected. We present experim…
Due to a strong spin-orbit interaction and a large Landé g-factor, InSb plays an important role in research on Majorana fermions. To further explore novel properties of Majorana fermions, hybrid devices based on quantum wells are conceived as an alternative approach to nanowires. In this work, we report a pronounced conductance quantization of quantum point contact devices in InSb/InAlSb quantum wells. Using a rotating magnetic field, we observe a large in-plane (|g1|=26) and out-of-plane (|g1|=52) g-factor anisotropy. Additionally, we investigate crossings of subbands with opposite spins and …
We present a quantized model of harmonically confined dot atom with inherent damping in the presence of a transverse magnetic field. The model leads to a non hermitian Hamiltonian in real coordinate. We have analytically studied the effects that damping has on the Rabi type oscillations of the system. The model explains the decoherence of Rabi oscillation in a Josephson Junction.
One of the simplest proposed experimental probes of a Majorana bound-state is a quantized (2e^2/h) value of zero-bias tunneling conductance. When temperature is somewhat larger than the intrinsic width of the Majorana peak, conductance is no longer quantized, but a zero-bias peak can remain. Such a non-quantized zero-bias peak has been recently reported for semiconducting nanowires with proximity induced superconductivity. In this paper we analyze the relation of the zero-bias peak to the presence of Majorana end-states, by simulating the tunneling conductance for multi-band wires with realist…
The thermoelectric properties of the surface states in three-dimensional topological insulator nanowires are studied. The Seebeck coefficients $S_c$ and the dimensionless thermoelectrical figure of merit $ZT$ are obtained by using the tight-binding Hamiltonian combining with the nonequilibrium Green's function method. They are strongly dependent on the gate voltage and the longitudinal and perpendicular magnetic fields. By changing the gate voltage or magnetic fields, the values of $S_c$ and $ZT$ can be easily controlled. At the zero magnetic fields and zero gate voltage, or at the large perpe…
Nonlocal compensation of magnetic damping by spin injection has been theoretically shown to establish dynamic, noncollinear magnetization states that carry spin currents over micrometer distances. Such states can be generically referred to as dissipative exchange flows (DEFs) because spatially diffusing spin currents are established by the mutual exchange torque exerted by neighboring spins. Analytical studies to date have been limited to the weak spin injection assumption whereby the equation of motion for the magnetization is mapped to hydrodynamic equations describing spin flow and then lin…
Magnetic insulators, such as yttrium iron garnet (Y$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$), are ideal materials for ultra-low power spintronics applications due to their low energy dissipation and efficient spin current generation and transmission. Recently, it has been realized that spin dynamics can be driven very effectively in micrometer-sized Y$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$/Pt heterostructures by spin-Hall effects. We demonstrate here the excitation and detection of spin dynamics in Y$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$/Pt nanowires by spin-torque ferromagnetic resonance. The nanowires defined via electron-beam lithography are fabricated…
