We study the projection $π: M_d \to B_d$ which sends an affine conjugacy class of polynomial $f: \mathbb{C}\to\mathbb{C}$ to the holomorphic conjugacy class of the restriction of $f$ to its basin of infinity. When $B_d$ is equipped with a dynamically natural Gromov-Hausdorff topology, the map $π$ becomes continuous and a homeomorphism on the shift locus. Our main result is that all fibers of $π$ are connected. Consequently, quasiconformal and topological basin-of-infinity conjugacy classes are also connected. The key ingredient in the proof is an analysis of model surfaces and model maps, branched covers between translation surfaces which model the local behavior of a polynomial.
We consider the problem of classifying the dynamics of complex polynomials $f: \mathbb{C} \to \mathbb{C}$ restricted to their basins of infinity. We synthesize existing combinatorial tools --- tableaux, trees, and laminations --- into a new invariant of basin dynamics we call the pictograph. For polynomials with all critical points escaping to infinity, we obtain a complete description of the set of topological conjugacy classes. We give an algorithm for constructing abstract pictographs, and we provide an inductive algorithm for counting topological conjugacy classes with a given pictograph.
We study the dynamics of cubic polynomials restricted to their basins of infinity, and we enumerate topological conjugacy classes with given combinatorics.
Let $\mathbb{C}_v$ be a characteristic zero algebraically closed field which is complete with respect to a non-Archimedean absolute value. We provide a necessary and sufficient condition for two tame polynomials in $\mathbb{C}_v[z]$ of degree $d \ge 2$ to be analytically conjugate on their basin of infinity. In the space of monic centered polynomials, tame polynomials with all their critical points in the basin of infinity form the tame shift locus. We show that a tame map $f\in\mathbb{C}_v[z]$ is in the closure of the tame shift locus if and only if the Fatou set of $f$ coincides with the bas…
In this paper, we give a formula of the Hausdorff dimension of the boundary of the immediate basin of infinity of McMullen maps $f_p(z)=z^Q+p/z^Q$, where $Q\geq 3$ and $p$ is small. This gives a lower bound of the Hausdorff dimension of the Julia sets of McMullen maps in the special cases.
In this article, we study the properties of conjugacies between polynomial basins. For any conjugacy, there is a quasiconformal conjugacy in the same homotopy class minimizing the dilatation. We compute the precise value of the minimal dilatation. The quasiconformal conjugacy minimizing the dilatation is not unique in general. We give a necessary and sufficient condition when the extremal map is unique.
Newton's root finding method applied to a (transcendental) entire function f:C->C is the iteration of a meromorphic function N. It is well known that if for some starting value z, Newton's method converges to a point x in C, then f has a root at x. We show that in many cases, if an orbit converges to infinity for Newton's method, then f has a `virtual root' at infinity. More precisely, we show that if N has an invariant Baker domain that satisfies some mild assumptions, then 0 is an asymptotic value for f. Conversely, we show that if f has an asymptotic value of logarithmic type at 0, then the…
We prove that the boundary of a component $U$ of the basin of an attracting periodic cycle (of period greater than 1) for an exponential map on the complex plane has Hausdorff dimension greater than 1 and less than 2. Moreover, the set of points in the boundary of $U$ which do not escape to infinity has Hausdorff dimension (in fact: hyperbolic dimension) greater than 1, while the set of points in the boundary of $U$ which escape to infinity has Hausdorff dimension 1.
Let $f:\mathbb{C}^2\to \mathbb{C}^2$ be a polynomial skew product which leaves invariant an attracting vertical line $ L $. Assume moreover $f$ restricted to $L$ is non-uniformly hyperbolic, in the sense that $f$ restricted to $L$ satisfies one of the following conditions: 1. $f|_L$ satisfies Topological Collet-Eckmann and Weak Regularity conditions. 2. The Lyapunov exponent at every critical value point lying in the Julia set of $f|_L$ exist and is positive, and there is no parabolic cycle. Under one of the above conditions we show that the Fatou set in the basin of $L$ coincides with the uni…
We investigate the well known Newton method to find roots of entire holomorphic functions. Our main result is that the immediate basin of attraction for every root is simply connected and unbounded. We also introduce ``virtual immediate basins'' in which the dynamics converges to infinity; we prove that these are simply connected as well.
The purpose of this work is to give a first approach to the dynamical behavior of Schröder's method, a well known iterative process for solving nonlinear equations. In this context we consider equations defined in the complex plane. By using topological conjugations, we characterize the basins of attraction of Schröder's method applied to polynomials with two roots and different multiplicities. Actually, we show that these basins are half-planes or circles, depending on the multiplicities of the roots. We finish our study with a graphical gallery that allow us to compare the basins of attracti…
In this paper, we study the dynamics of Newton maps for arbitrary polynomials. Let $p$ be an arbitrary polynomial with at least three distinct roots, and $f$ be its Newton map. It is shown that the boundary $\partial B$ of any immediate root basin $B$ of $f$ is locally connected. Moreover, $\partial B$ is a Jordan curve if and only if ${\rm deg}(f|_B)=2$. This implies that the boundaries of all components of root basins, for all polynomials' Newton maps, from the viewpoint of topology, are tame.
Brolin-Lyubich measure $λ_R$ of a rational endomorphism $R:\riem\to\riem$ with $°R\geq 2$ is the unique invariant measure of maximal entropy $h_{λ_R}=h_{\text{top}}(R)=\log d$. Its support is the Julia set $J(R)$. We demonstrate that $λ_R$ is always computable by an algorithm which has access to coefficients of $R$, even when $J(R)$ is not computable. In the case when $R$ is a polynomial, Brolin-Lyubich measure coincides with the harmonic measure of the basin of infinity. We find a sufficient condition for computability of the harmonic measure of a domain, which holds for the basin of infinity…
We construct the Green current for a random iteration of "horizontal-like" mappings in two complex dimensions. This is applied to the study of a polynomial map $f:\mathbb{C}^2\to\mathbb{C}^2$ with the following properties: 1. infinity is $f$-attracting, 2. $f$ contracts the line at infinity to a point not in the indeterminacy set. Then the Green current of $f$ can be decomposed into pieces associated with an itinerary determined by the indeterminacy points. We also study the set of escape rates near infinity, i.e. the possible values of the function $\limsup \frac{1}{n}\log^+\log^+ \norm{f^n}$…
The dynamical structure of Chebyshev polynomials on $\mathbb{Z}_2$, the ring of $2$-adic integers, is fully described by showing all its minimal subsystems and their attracting basins.
The purpose of this article is to explore a few properties of polynomial shift-like automorphisms of $\mathbb{C}^k.$ We first prove that a $ν-$shift-like polynomial map (say $S_a$) degenerates essentially to a polynomial map in $ν-$dimensions as $a \to 0.$ Secondly, we show that a shift-like map obtained by perturbing a hyperbolic polynomial (i.e., $S_a$, where $|a|$ is sufficiently small) has finitely many Fatou components, consisting of basins of attraction of periodic points and the component at infinity.
We study the Cebyshev-Halley methods applied to the family of polynomials $f_{n,c}(z)=z^n+c$, for $n\ge 2$ and $c\in \mathbb{C}^{*}$. We prove the existence of parameters such that the immediate basins of attraction corresponding to the roots of unity are infinitely connected. We also prove that, for $n \ge 2$, the corresponding dynamical plane contains a connected component of the Julia set, which is a quasiconformal deformation of the Julia set of the map obtained by applying Newton's method to $f_{n,-1}$.
In the paper we describe basin of attraction and the Siegel discs of the $p$-adic dynamical system $f(x)=x^{2n+1}+ax^{n+1}$ over complex $p$-adic field.
We study the behavior of a polynomial sequence which is defined by iterating a polynomial pair under Thue-Morse dynamic. We show that in suitable sense, the sequence will behave like $\{2\cos 2^nx: n\ge 1\}$. Basing on this property we can show that the Hausdorff dimension of the spectrum of the Thue-Morse Hamiltonian has a common positive lower bound for all coupling.
We study stability and bifurcations in holomorphic families of polynomial automorphisms of C^2. We say that such a family is weakly stable over some parameter domain if periodic orbits do not bifurcate there. We first show that this defines a meaningful notion of stability, which parallels in many ways the classical notion of J-stability in one-dimensional dynamics. In the second part of the paper, we prove that under an assumption of moderate dissipativity, the parameters displaying homoclinic tangencies are dense in the bifurcation locus. This confirms one of Palis' Conjectures in the comple…
The shift locus is the space of normalized polynomials in one complex variable for which every critical point is in the attracting basin of infinity. The method of sausages gives a (canonical) decomposition of the shift locus in each degree into (countably many) codimension 0 submanifolds, each of which is homeomorphic to a complex algebraic variety. In this paper we explain the method of sausages, and some of its consequences. This is an expository paper.

We study the dynamics near infinity of polynomial mappings $f$ in $\mathbb{C}^2$. We assume that $f$ has indeterminacy points and is non constant on the line at infinity $L_\infty$. If $L_\infty$ is $f$-attracting, we decompose the Green current along itineraries defined by the indeterminacy points and their preimages. The symbolic dynamics that arises is a subshift on an infinite alphabet.
In 1988, Mayer proved the remarkable fact that infinity is an explosion point for the set of endpoints of the Julia set of an exponential map that has an attracting fixed point. That is, the set is totally separated (in particular, it does not have any nontrivial connected subsets), but its union with the point at infinity is connected. Answering a question of Schleicher, we extend this result to the set of "escaping endpoints" in the sense of Schleicher and Zimmer, for any exponential map for which the singular value belongs to an attracting or parabolic basin, has a finite orbit, or escapes …
