The classical Tits construction of the exceptional simple Lie algebras has been extended in a couple of directions by using either Jordan superalgebras or composition superalgebras. These extensions are reviewed here. The outcome has been the discovery of some new simple modular Lie superalgebras.
The classical Tits construction provides models of the exceptional simple Lie algebras in terms of a unital composition algebra and a degree three simple Jordan algebra. A couple of actions of the symmetric group of degree 4 on this construction are given. By means of these actions, the models provided by the Tits construction are related to models of the exceptional Lie algebras obtained from two different types of structurable algebras. Some models of exceptional Lie superalgebras are discussed too.
Some simple Lie superalgebras, specific of characteristic 3, defined by S. Bouarroudj and D. Leites, are shown to be related to the simple alternative and commutative superalgebras discovered by I.P. Shestakov.
The relationship between Jordan and Lie coalgebras is established. We prove that from any Jordan coalgebra $\langle A, Δ\rangle$, it is possible to construct a Lie coalgebra $\langle L(A), Δ_{L}\rangle$. Moreover, any dual algebra of the coalgebra $\langle L(A), Δ_{L}\rangle$ corresponds to a Lie algebra that can be determined from the dual algebra for $\langle A,Δ\rangle$, following the Kantor--Koecher--Tits process. The structure of subcoalgebras and coideals of the coalgebra $\langle L(A), Δ_{L}\rangle$ is characterized.
In two 1966 papers, Jacques Tits gave a construction of exceptional Lie algebras (hence implicitly exceptional algebraic groups) and a classification of possible indexes of simple algebraic groups. For the special case of his construction that gives groups of type E6, we connect the two papers by answering the question: Given an Albert algebra A and a separable quadratic field extension K, what is the index of the resulting algebraic group?
We give a classification up to equivalence of the fine group gradings by abelian groups on the Jordan pairs and triple systems of types bi-Cayley and Albert, under the assumption that the base field is algebraically closed of characteristic different from $2$. The associated Weyl groups are computed. We also determine, for each fine grading on the bi-Cayley and Albert pairs, the induced grading on the exceptional simple Lie algebra given by the Tits-Kantor-Koecher construction.
The Kantor-Koecher-Tits construction associates a Lie algebra to any Jordan algebra. We generalize this construction to include also extensions of the associated Lie algebra. In particular, the conformal realization of so(p+1,q+1) generalizes to so(p+n,q+n), for arbitrary n, with a linearly realized subalgebra so(p,q). We also show that the construction applied to 3x3 matrices over the division algebras R, C, H, O gives rise to the exceptional Lie algebras f4, e6, e7, e8, as well as to their affine, hyperbolic and further extensions.
This paper is concerned with the description of exceptional simple Lie algebras as octonionic analogues of the classical matrix Lie algebras. We review the Tits-Freudenthal construction of the magic square, which includes the exceptional Lie algebras as the octonionic case of a construction in terms of a Jordan algebra of hermitian 3x3 matrices (Tits) or various plane and other geometries (Freudenthal). We present alternative constructions of the magic square which explain its symmetry, and show explicitly how the use of split composition algebras leads to analogues of the matrix Lie algebras …
In 2000, J. Tits and R. Weiss classified all Moufang spherical buildings of rank two, also known as Moufang polygons. The hardest case in the classification consists of the Moufang quadrangles. They fall into different families, each of which can be described by an appropriate algebraic structure. For the exceptional quadrangles, this description is intricate and involves many different maps that are defined ad hoc and lack a proper explanation. In this paper, we relate these algebraic structures to two other classes of algebraic structures that had already been studied before, namely to Freud…
A unified treatment of the $2 \times 2$ analog of the Freudenthal-Tits magic square of Lie groups is given, providing an explicit representation in terms of matrix groups over composition algebras.
The fine abelian group gradings on the simple exceptional classical Lie superalgebras over algebraically closed fields of characteristic 0 are determined up to equivalence.
This paper deals with the problem of conjugacy of Cartan subalgebras for affine Kac-Moody Lie algebras. Unlike the methods used by Peterson and Kac, our approach is entirely cohomological and geometric. It is deeply rooted on the theory of reductive group schemes developed by Demazure and Grothendieck, and on the work of J. Tits on buildings.
It is well-known that every algebraic group of type F_4 is the automorphism group of an exceptional Jordan algebra, and that up to isogeny all groups of type ^1E_6 with trivial Tits algebras arise as the isometry groups of norm forms of such Jordan algebras. We describe a similar relationship between groups of type E_6 and groups of type E_7 and use it to give explicit descriptions of the homogeneous projective varieties associated to groups of type E_7 with trivial Tits algebras. The underlying algebraic structure for the relationship considered here are a sort of 56-dimensional structurable …
All gradings by abelian groups are classified on the following algebras over an algebraically closed field of characteristic not 2: the simple Lie algebra of type $G_2$ (characteristic not 3), the exceptional simple Jordan algebra, and the simple Lie algebra of type $F_4$.
Lie-Yamaguti algebras (or generalized Lie triple systems) are binary-ternary algebras intimately related to reductive homogeneous spaces. The Lie-Yamaguti algebras which are irreducible as modules over their Lie inner derivation algebra are the algebraic counterpart of the isotropy irreducible homogeneous spaces. These systems will be shown to split into three disjoint types: adjoint type, non-simple type and generic type. The systems of the first two types will be classified and most of them will be shown to be related to a Generalized Tits Construction of Lie algebras.
The exceptional simple Lie algebras of types E7 and E8 are endowed with optimal $SL_2^n$-structures, and are thus described in terms of the corresponding coordinate algebras. These are nonassociative algebras which much resemble the so called code algebras.
We observe several facts and make conjectures about commutative algebras satisfying the Jacobi identity. The central question is which of those algebras admit a faithful representation (i.e., in Lie parlance, satisfy the Ado theorem, or, in Jordan parlance, are special).
We study a noncommutative generalization of Jordan algebras called Jordan dialgebras. These are algebras that satisfy the identities $[x_1 x_2]x_3= 0$, $(x_1^2,x_2,x_3)=2(x_1,x_2,x_1x_3)$, $x_1(x_1^2 x_2)=x_1^2(x_1 x_2)$; they are related with Jordan algebras in the same way as Leibniz algebras are related to Lie algebras. We present an analogue of the Tits---Kantor---Koecher construction for Jordan dialgebras that provides an embedding of such an algebra into Leibniz algebra.
It is well-known that every derivation of a semisimple Lie algebra $L$ over an algebraically closed field $F$ with characteristic zero is inner. The aim of this paper is to show what happens if the characteristic of $F$ is prime with $L$ an exceptional Lie algebra. We prove that if $L$ is a Chevalley Lie algebra of type $\{G_2,F_4,E_6,E_7,E_8\}$ over a field of characteristic $p$ then the derivations of $L$ are inner except in the cases $G_2$ with $p=2$, $E_6$ with $p=3$ and $E_7$ with $p=2$.
Satake diagrams of the real forms $ \mathfrak{e}_{6,-26}$, $ \mathfrak{e}_{6,-14}$ and $ \mathfrak{e}_{6,2}$ are carefully developed. The first real form is constructed with an Albert algebra and the other ones by using the two paraoctonion algebras and certain symmetric construction of the magic square.
Lie-Yamaguti algebras (or generalized Lie triple systems) are binary-ternary algebras intimately related to reductive homogeneous spaces. The Lie-Yamaguti algebras which are irreducible as modules over their inner derivation algebras are the algebraic counterpart of the isotropy irreducible homogeneous spaces. These systems splits into three disjoint types: adjoint type, non-simple type and generic type. The systems of the first two types were classified in a previous paper through a generalized Tits Construction of Lie algebras. In this paper, the Lie-Yamaguti algebras of generic type are cla…
Recently, the classical Freudenthal Magic Square has been extended over fields of characteristic 3 with two more rows and columns filled with (mostly simple) Lie superalgebras specific of this characteristic. This Supermagic Square will be reviewed and some of the simple Lie superalgebras that appear will be shown to be isomorphic to the Tits-Kantor-Koecher Lie superalgebras of some Jordan superalgebras.
Two new simple modular Lie superalgebras are obtained in characteristics 3 and 5, which share the property that their even parts are orthogonal Lie algebras and the odd parts their spin modules. The characteristic 5 case is shown to be related, by means of a construction of Tits, to the exceptional ten dimensional Jordan superalgebra of Kac.
Models of the exceptional simple modular Lie superalgebras in characteristic $p\geq 3$, that have appeared in the classification due to Bouarroudj, Grozman and Leites of the Lie superalgebras with indecomposable symmetrizable Cartan matrices, are provided. The models relate these exceptional Lie superalgebras to some low dimensional nonassociative algebraic systems.
In this paper, the Hom-Lie superalgebra structures on exceptional simple Lie superalgebras of vector fields are studied. Taking advantage of the Z-grading structures and the transitivity, we prove that there is only the trivial Hom-Lie superalgebra structures on exceptional simple Lie superalgebras. Our proof is obtained by studying the Hom-Lie superalgebra structures on their 0-th and -1-st Z-components.
We describe algorithms for computing the induced nilpotent orbits in semisimple Lie algebras. We use them to obtain the induction tables for the Lie algebras of exceptional type. This also yields the classification of the rigid nilpotent orbits in those Lie algebras.
Using octonions and the triality property of Spin(8), we find explicit formulae for the Lie brackets of the exceptional simple real Lie algebras $\mathfrak{f}_4$ and $\mathfrak{f}^*_4$, i.e. the Lie algebras of the isometry groups of the Cayley projective plane and the Cayley hyperbolic plane. As an application, we classify polar actions on the Cayley hyperbolic plane which leave a totally geodesic subspace invariant.
In this thesis we consider the maximal subalgebras of the exceptional Lie algebras in algebraically closed fields of positive characteristic. This begins with a quick recap of the article by Herpel and Stewart which considered the Cartan type maximal subalgebras in the exceptional Lie algebras for good characteristic, and then the article by Premet considering non-semisimple maximal subalgebras in good characteristic. For $p=5$ we give an example of what appears to be a new maximal subalgebra in the exceptional Lie algebra of type $E_8$. We show that this maximal subalgebra is isomorphic to th…
For a simple Lie algebra, over $\mathbb{C}$, we consider the weight which is the sum of all simple roots and denote it $\tildeα$. We formally use Kostant's weight multiplicity formula to compute the "dimension" of the zero-weight space. In type $A_r$, $\tildeα$ is the highest root, and therefore this dimension is the rank of the Lie algebra. In type $B_r$, this is the defining representation, with dimension equal to 1. In the remaining cases, the weight $\tildeα$ is not dominant and is not the highest weight of an irreducible finite-dimensional representation. Kostant's weight multiplicity for…
We give a detailed description of the torsors that correspond to multiloop algebras. These algebras are twisted forms of simple Lie algebras extended over Laurent polynomial rings. They play a crucial role in the construction of Extended Affine Lie Algebras (which are higher nullity analogues of the affine Kac-Moody Lie algebras). The torsor approach that we take draws heavily for the theory of reductive group schemes developed by M. Demazure and A. Grothendieck. It also allows us to find a bridge between multiloop algebras and the work of J. Tits on reductive groups over complete local fields…
In this paper we initiate the study of the maximal subalgebras of exceptional simple classical Lie algebras \g over algebraically closed fields k of positive characteristic p, such that the prime characteristic is good for \g. In this paper we deal with what is surely the most unnatural case; that is, where the maximal subalgebra in question is a simple subalgebra of non-classical type. We show that only the first Witt algebra can occur as a subalgebra of \g and give explicit details on when it may be maximal in \g.
We generate by computer a basis of invariants for the fundamental representations of the exceptional Lie groups E(6) and E(7), up to degree 18. We discuss the relevance of this calculation for the study of supersymmetric gauge theories, and revisit the self-dual exceptional models. We study the chiral ring of G(2) to degree 13, as well as a few classical groups. The homological dimension of a ring is a natural estimator of its complexity and provides a guideline for identifying theories that have a good chance to be amenable to a solution.
While describing the results of our recent work on exceptional Lie and Jordan algebras, so tightly intertwined in their connection with elementary particles, we will try to stimulate a critical discussion on the nature of spacetime and indicate how these algebraic structures can inspire a new way of going beyond the current knowledge of fundamental physics.
We describe all the fine group gradings, up to equivalence, on the Lie algebra $\mathfrak d_4$. This problem is equivalent to finding the maximal abelian diagonalizable subgroups of the automorphism group of $\mathfrak d_4$. We prove that there are fourteen by using two different viewpoints. The first approach is computational: we get a full description of the gradings by using a particular implementation of the automorphism group of the Dynkin diagram of $\mathfrak d_4$ and some algebraic groups stuff. The second approach, more qualitative, emphasizes some algebraic aspects, as triality, and …
We introduce and start investigating the properties of countably infinite, periodic chains of finite dimensional generalizations of the exceptional Lie algebras: each exceptional Lie algebra (but $\mathbf{g}_{2}$) is part of an infinite family of finite dimensional algebras, which we name "Magic Star" algebras. These algebras have remarkable similarities with many characterizing features of the exceptional Lie algebras.
