We describe all the fine group gradings, up to equivalence, on the Lie algebra $\mathfrak d_4$. This problem is equivalent to finding the maximal abelian diagonalizable subgroups of the automorphism group of $\mathfrak d_4$. We prove that there are fourteen by using two different viewpoints. The first approach is computational: we get a full description of the gradings by using a particular implementation of the automorphism group of the Dynkin diagram of $\mathfrak d_4$ and some algebraic groups stuff. The second approach, more qualitative, emphasizes some algebraic aspects, as triality, and it is mostly devoted to gradings involving the outer automorphisms of order three.
There are fourteen fine gradings on the exceptional Lie algebra $\frak e_6$ over an algebraically closed field of zero characteristic. We provide their descriptions and a proof that they are all.
Six fine gradings on the real form $\mathfrak{e}_{6,-14}$ are described, precisely those ones coming from fine gradings on the complexified algebra. The universal grading groups are $\mathbb Z_2^3\times\mathbb Z_3^2$, $\mathbb Z_2^6$, $\mathbb Z\times\mathbb Z_2^4$, $\mathbb Z_2^7$, $\mathbb Z\times\mathbb Z_2^5$ and $\mathbb Z^2\times\mathbb Z_2^3$.
Some fine gradings on the exceptional Lie algebras $\mathfrak{e}_6$, $\mathfrak{e}_7$ and $\mathfrak{e}_8$ are described. This list tries to be exhaustive.
Consider a Leibniz superalgebra $\mathfrak L$ additionally graded by an arbitrary set $I$ (set grading). We show that $\mathfrak L$ decomposes as the sum of well-described graded ideals plus (maybe) a suitable linear subspace. In the case of ${\mathfrak L}$ being of maximal length, the simplicity of ${\mathfrak L}$ is also characterized in terms of connections.
We describe four fine gradings on the real form $\mathfrak e_{6,-26}$. They are precisely the gradings whose complexifications are fine gradings on the complexified algebra $\mathfrak{e}_6$. The universal grading groups are $\mathbb Z_2^6$, $\mathbb Z\times\mathbb Z_2^4$, $\mathbb Z^2\times\mathbb Z_2^3$, and $\mathbb Z_4\times\mathbb Z_2^4$.
The fine abelian group gradings on the simple exceptional classical Lie superalgebras over algebraically closed fields of characteristic 0 are determined up to equivalence.
We continue the study of Exceptional Periodicity and Magic Star algebras, which provide non-Lie, countably infinite chains of finite dimensional generalizations of exceptional Lie algebras. We analyze the graded algebraic structures arising in the Magic Star projection, as well as the Hermitian part of rank-3 Vinberg's matrix algebras (which we dub HT-algebras), occurring on each vertex of the Magic Star.
We give a classification up to equivalence of the fine group gradings by abelian groups on the Jordan pairs and triple systems of types bi-Cayley and Albert, under the assumption that the base field is algebraically closed of characteristic different from $2$. The associated Weyl groups are computed. We also determine, for each fine grading on the bi-Cayley and Albert pairs, the induced grading on the exceptional simple Lie algebra given by the Tits-Kantor-Koecher construction.
All gradings by abelian groups are classified on the following algebras over an algebraically closed field of characteristic not 2: the simple Lie algebra of type $G_2$ (characteristic not 3), the exceptional simple Jordan algebra, and the simple Lie algebra of type $F_4$.
A depth one grading $\mathfrak{g}= \mathfrak{g}^{-1}\oplus \mathfrak{g}^0 \oplus \mathfrak{g}^1 \oplus \cdots \oplus \mathfrak{g}^{\ell}$ of a finite dimensional Lie superalgebra $\mathfrak{g}$ is called nonlinear irreducible if the isotropy representation $\mathrm{ad}_{\mathfrak{g}^0}|_{\mathfrak{g}^{-1}}$ is irreducible and $\mathfrak{g}^1 \neq (0)$. An example is the full prolongation of an irreducible linear Lie superalgebra $\mathfrak{g}^0 \subset \mathfrak{gl}(\mathfrak{g}^{-1})$ of finite type with non-trivial first prolongation. We prove that a complex Lie superalgebra $\mathfrak{g}$ w…
In this paper we consider gradings by a finite abelian group $G$ on the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{sl}_n(F)$ over an algebraically closed field $F$ of characteristic different from 2 and not dividing $n$.
The group gradings on the symmetric composition algebras over arbitrary fields are classified. Applications of this result to gradings on the exceptional simple Lie algebras are considered too.
Satake diagrams of the real forms $ \mathfrak{e}_{6,-26}$, $ \mathfrak{e}_{6,-14}$ and $ \mathfrak{e}_{6,2}$ are carefully developed. The first real form is constructed with an Albert algebra and the other ones by using the two paraoctonion algebras and certain symmetric construction of the magic square.
Given a fine abelian group grading on a finite dimensional simple Lie algebra over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero, with universal grading group $G$, it is shown that the induced grading by the free group $G/\tor(G)$ is a grading by a (not necessarily reduced) root system. Some consequences for the classification of fine gradings on the exceptional simple Lie algebras are drawn.
Let $V$ be a complex vector space with a non-degenerate symmetric bilinear form and $\mathbb S$ an irreducible module over the Clifford algebra $Cl(V)$ determined by this form. A supertranslation algebra is a $\mathbb Z$-graded Lie superalgebra $\mathfrak m=\mathfrak{m}_{-2}\oplus\mathfrak{m}_{-1}$, where $\mathfrak{m}_{-2}=V$ and $\mathfrak{m}_{-1}=\mathbb S\oplus\cdots\oplus\mathbb{S}$ is the direct sum of an arbitrary number $N\geq 1$ of copies of $\mathbb S$, whose bracket $[\cdot,\cdot]|_{\mathfrak{m}_{-1}\otimes \mathfrak{m}_{-1}}:\mathfrak{m}_{-1}\otimes\mathfrak{m}_{-1}\rightarrow\math…
We study group gradings on the Albert algebra and on the simple exceptional Lie algebra $\frak{f}_4$ over algebraically closed fields of characteristic zero. There are eight nontoral nonequivalent gradings on the Albert algebra (three of them being fine) and nine on $\frak{f}_4$ (also three of them fine).
We describe two constructions of a certain $\mathbb{Z}_4^3$-grading on the so-called Brown algebra (a simple structurable algebra of dimension 56 and skew-dimension 1) over an algebraically closed field of characteristic different from 2 and 3. We also show how this grading gives rise to several interesting fine gradings on exceptional simple Lie algebras of types E6, E7 and E8.
For an $n$-dimensional Leibniz/Lie algebra $\mathfrak{h}$ over a field $k$ we introduce a new invariant ${\mathcal A}(\mathfrak{h})$, called the \emph{universal algebra} of $\mathfrak{h}$, as a quotient of the polynomial algebra $k[X_{ij} \, | \, i, j = 1, \cdots, n]$ through an ideal generated by $n^3$ polynomials. We prove that ${\mathcal A}(\mathfrak{h})$ admits a unique bialgebra structure which makes it an initial object among all commutative bialgebras coacting on $\mathfrak{h}$. The new object ${\mathcal A} (\mathfrak{h})$ is the key tool in answering two open problems in Lie algebra th…
Suppose a finite dimensional semisimple Lie algebra $\mathfrak g$ acts by derivations on a finite dimensional associative or Lie algebra $A$ over a field of characteristic $0$. We prove the $\mathfrak g$-invariant analogs of Wedderburn - Mal'cev and Levi theorems, and the analog of Amitsur's conjecture on asymptotic behavior for codimensions of polynomial identities with derivations of $A$. It turns out that for associative algebras the differential PI-exponent coincides with the ordinary one. Also we prove the analog of Amitsur's conjecture for finite dimensional associative algebras with an …
Let $G$ be an exceptional simple algebraic group over an algebraically closed field $k$ and suppose that the characteristic $p$ of $k$ is a good prime for $G$. In this paper we classify the maximal Lie subalgebras $\mathfrak{m}$ of the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}={\rm Lie}(G)$. Specifically, we show that one of the following holds: $\mathfrak{m}={\rm Lie}(M)$ for some maximal connected subgroup $M$ of $G$, or $\mathfrak{m}$ is a maximal Witt subalgebra of $\mathfrak{g}$, or $\mathfrak{m}$ is a maximal $\it{\mbox{exotic semidirect product}}$. The conjugacy classes of maximal connected subgroups o…
For any grading by an abelian group $G$ on the exceptional simple Lie algebra $\mathcal{L}$ of type $E_6$ or $E_7$ over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero, we compute the graded Brauer invariants of simple finite-dimensional modules, thus completing the computation of these invariants for simple finite-dimensional Lie algebras. This yields the classification of $G$-graded simple $\mathcal{L}$-modules, as well as necessary and sufficient conditions for an $\mathcal{L}$-module to admit a $G$-grading compatible with the given $G$-grading on $\mathcal{L}$.
We give classifications of group gradings, up to equivalence and up to isomorphism, on the tensor product of a Cayley algebra $\mathcal{C}$ and a Hurwitz algebra over a field of characteristic different from 2. We also prove that the automorphism group schemes of $\mathcal{C}^{\otimes n}$ and $\mathcal{C}^n$ are isomorphic. On the other hand, we prove that the automorphism group schemes of a Smirnov algebra (a $35$-dimensional simple exceptional structurable algebra constructed from a Cayley algebra $\mathcal{C}$) and $\mathcal{C}$ are isomorphic. This is used to obtain classifications, up to …
The ground field in the text is of characteristic 2. The classification of modulo 2 gradings of simple Lie algebras is vital for the classification of simple finite-dimensional Lie superalgebras: with each grading, a simple Lie superalgebra is associated, see arXiv:1407.1695. No classification of gradings was known for any type of simple Lie algebras, bar restricted Jacobson-Witt algebras (i.e., the first derived of the Lie algebras of vector fields with truncated polynomials as coefficients) on not less than 3 indeterminates. Here we completely describe gradings modulo 2 for several series of…
In this paper, the Hom-Lie superalgebra structures on exceptional simple Lie superalgebras of vector fields are studied. Taking advantage of the Z-grading structures and the transitivity, we prove that there is only the trivial Hom-Lie superalgebra structures on exceptional simple Lie superalgebras. Our proof is obtained by studying the Hom-Lie superalgebra structures on their 0-th and -1-st Z-components.
Using octonions and the triality property of Spin(8), we find explicit formulae for the Lie brackets of the exceptional simple real Lie algebras $\mathfrak{f}_4$ and $\mathfrak{f}^*_4$, i.e. the Lie algebras of the isometry groups of the Cayley projective plane and the Cayley hyperbolic plane. As an application, we classify polar actions on the Cayley hyperbolic plane which leave a totally geodesic subspace invariant.
Let $\mathfrak{g}$ be a real semisimple Lie algebra with Iwasawa decomposition $\mathfrak{k} \oplus \mathfrak{a} \oplus \mathfrak{n}$. We show that, except for some explicit exceptional cases, every derivation of the nilpotent subalgebra $\mathfrak{n}$ that preserves its restricted root space decomposition is of the form $\text{ad}( W)$, where $W \in \mathfrak{m}\oplus .
The notion of (Z/2Z) x (Z/2Z)-symmetric spaces is a generalization of classical symmetric spaces, where the group Z/2Z is replaced by (Z/2Z) x (Z/2Z). In this article, a classification is given of the (Z/2Z) x (Z/2Z)-symmetric spaces G/K where G is an exceptional compact Lie group or Spin(8), complementing recent results of Bahturin and Goze. Our results are equivalent to a classification of (Z/2Z) x (Z/2Z)-gradings on the exceptional simple Lie algebras e6, e7, e8, f4, g2 and so(8).
In Fialowski's classification for algebras of maximal class, there are three Lie algebras of maximal class with 1-dimensional homogeneous components: $\mathfrak{m}_0$, $L_1$ and $\mathfrak{m}_2$. In this paper, we studied their biderivations by considering the embedded mapping to derivation algebras. Then we determined commuting mappings on these algebras as an application of biderivations. Finally, local and 2-local derivations for these three algebras were characterized as the given gradings.
Let $\mathfrak{g}$ be a Lie algebra over an algebraically closed field $\Bbbk$ of characteristic zero. Define the universal grading group $\mathcal{C}(\mathfrak{g})$ as having one generator $g_ρ$ for each irreducible $\mathfrak{g}$-representation $ρ$, one relation $g_π = g_ρ^{-1}$ whenever $π$ is weakly contained in the dual representation $ρ^*$ (i.e. the kernel of $π$ in the enveloping algebra $U(\mathfrak{g})$ contains that of $ρ^*$), and one relation $g_ρ = g_{ρ'}g_{ρ"}$ whenever $ρ$ is weakly contained in $ρ'\otimesρ"$. The main result is that attaching to an irreducible representation its…
Given a nilpotent Lie algebra $\mathfrak n$ we construct a spectral sequence which is derived from a filtration of its Chevalley-Eilenberg differential complex and converges to the Lie algebra cohomology of $\mathfrak n$. The limit of this spectral sequence gives a grading for the Lie algebra cohomology, except for the cohomology groups of degree 0, 1, $\dim \mathfrak n-1$ and $\dim\mathfrak n$ as we shall prove. We describe the spectral sequence associated to a nilpotent Lie algebra which is a direct sum of two ideals, one of them of dimension one, in terms of the spectral sequence of the co-…
It is well-known that the exceptional Lie algebras $\mathfrak{f}_4$ and $\mathfrak{g}_2$ arise from the octonions as the derivation algebras of the $3\times3$ hermitian and $1\times1$ antihermitian matrices, respectively. Inspired by this, we compute the derivation algebras of the spaces of hermitian and antihermitian matrices over an octonion algebra in all dimensions.
In this paper, using the correspondence of gentle algebras and dissections of marked surfaces, we study full exceptional sequences in the perfect derived category $\mathsf{K^b(A)}$ of a gentle algebra $\mathsf{A}$. We show that full exceptional sequences in $\mathsf{K^b(A)}$ exist if and only if the associated marked surface has no punctures and has at least two marked points on the boundary. Furthermore, by using induction on cuts of surfaces, we characterise when an exceptional sequence can be completed to a full exceptional sequence. If the genus of the associated surface is zero then we sh…
For the exceptional finite-dimensional modular Lie superalgebras $\mathfrak{g}(A)$ with indecomposable Cartan matrix $A$, and their simple subquotients, we computed non-isomorphic Lie superalgebras constituting the homologies of the odd elements with zero square. These homologies are~key ingredients in the Duflo--Serganova approach to the representation theory. There were two definitions of defect of Lie superalgebras in the literature with different ranges of application. We suggest a third definition and an easy-to-use way to find its value. In positive characteristic, we found out one more …
The group-scheme of automorphisms of the ten-dimensional exceptional Kac's Jordan superalgebra is shown to be isomorphic to the semidirect product of the direct product of two copies of SL2 by the constant group scheme C2. This is used to revisit, extend, and simplify, known results on the classification of the twisted forms of this superalgebra and of its gradings.
The representation scheme ${\tt rep}_n A$ of the 3-dimensional Sklyanin algebra $A$ associated to a plane elliptic curve and n-torsion point contains singularities over the augmentation ideal $\mathfrak{m}$. We investigate the semi-stable representations of the noncommutative blow-up algebra $B=A \oplus \mathfrak{m}t \oplus\mathfrak{m}^2 t^2 \oplus ...$ to obtain a partial resolution of the central singularity ${\tt proj} Z(B) \rightarrow {\tt spec} Z(A)$ such that the remaining singularities in the exceptional fiber determine an elliptic curve and are all of type $\mathbb{C} \times \mathbb{C}…
Let $\mathfrak{g}_m=\mathfrak{sl}(2)\ltimes V(m)$, $m\ge 1$, where $V(m)$ is the irreducible $\mathfrak{sl}(2)$-module of dimension $m+1$ viewed as an abelian Lie algebra. It is known that the isomorphism classes of uniserial $\mathfrak{g}_m$-modules consist of a family, say of type $Z$, containing modules of arbitrary composition length, and some exceptional modules with composition length $\le 4$. Let $V$ and $W$ be two uniserial $\mathfrak{g}_m$-modules of type $Z$. In this paper we obtain the $\mathfrak{sl}(2)$-module decomposition of $\text{soc}(V\otimes W)$ by giving explicitly the highe…
