We present an exact mapping of models of interacting fermions onto boson models. The bosons correspond to collective excitations in the initial fermionic models. This bosonization is applicable in any dimension and for any interaction between fermions. We show schematically how the mapping can be used for Monte Carlo calculations and argue that it should be free from the sign problem. Introducing superfields we derive a field theory that may serve as a new way of analytical study.
Novel controlled non-perturbative techniques are a must in the study of strongly correlated systems, especially near quantum criticality. One of these techniques, bosonization, has been extensively used to understand one-dimensional, as well as higher dimensional electronic systems at finite density. In this paper, we generalize the theory of two-dimensional bosonization of Fermi liquids, in the presence of a homogeneous weak magnetic field perpendicular to the plane. Here, we extend the formalism of bosonization to treat free spinless fermions at finite density in a uniform magnetic field. We…

We construct novel fermion-fermion dualities in $2+1$-dimensions using 3d bosonization dualities. This is achieved by relating two-node quiver theories using both the flavor-bounded and flavor-violated 3d bosonization dualities. Such quivers can be viewed as a generalization of the fermionic particle-vortex duality. A special case of these quivers exhibits a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry under interchange of the two nodes. Using orbifold techniques, we show that such dualities provide a novel way of deriving known 3d bosonization dualities with adjoint matter, thus unifying the non-Abelian bosonizat…
Applying the results of Ref.[1], we carry out the non-abelian bosonization for a class of free fermion symmetry-protected topological states (SPTs). The resulting boson theories are non-linear sigma models with topological $θ$ term, thus unifying the field theory description of the (free) fermionic and bosonic SPTs. Tuning $θ$ from $0$ to $2π$ triggers the topological trivial to non-trivial phase transitions. In addition, applying the same idea to the symmetry-protected critical spin liquids, we obtain the NL$\s$ models for spin SPTs living in one spatial dimension higher.
We discuss bosonization and Fermionic Short-Range-Entangled (FSRE) phases of matter in one, two, and three spatial dimensions, emphasizing the physical meaning of the cohomological parameters which label such phases and the connection with higher-form symmetries. We propose a classification scheme for fermionic SPT phases in three spatial dimensions with an arbitrary finite point symmetry G. It generalizes the supercohomology of Gu and Wen. We argue that the most general such phase can be obtained from a bosonic "shadow" by condensing both fermionic particles and strings.
Recent work on a family of boson-fermion mappings has emphasized the interplay of symmetry and duality: Phases related by a particle-vortex duality of bosons (fermions) are related by time-reversal symmetry in their fermionic (bosonic) formulation. We present exact mappings for a number of concrete models that make this property explicit on the operator level. We illustrate the approach with one- and two-dimensional quantum Ising models, and then similarly explore the duality web of complex bosons and Dirac fermions in (2+1) dimensions.
Bosonization is one of the most significant frameworks to analyze fermionic systems. In this work, we propose a new bosonization of Dirac fermion coupled with $U(1)$ background gauge field consistent with gauge invariance, global chiral anomaly matching and fermion-boson operator correspondence, either of which is not satisfied by previously developed bosonizations. The bilinear Dirac-mass term condensation paradox and its generalized form are resolved by our bosonization. This new bosonization approach to interacting systems also correctly captures the conformal characters of a significant cl…
We develop a bosonization formalism that captures non-perturbatively the interaction effects on the $\mathbf{Q}=0$ continuum of excitations of nodal fermions above one dimension. Our approach is a natural extension of the classic bosonization scheme for higher dimensional Fermi surfaces to include the $\mathbf{Q}=0$ neutral excitations that would be absent in a single-band system. The problem is reduced to solving a boson bilinear Hamiltonian. We establish a rigorous microscopic footing for this approach by showing that the solution of such boson bilinear Hamiltonian is exactly equivalent to p…
Non-chiral bosonization (NCBT) is a non-trivial modification of the standard Fermi-Bose correspondence in one spatial dimensions made in order to facilitate the study of strongly inhomogeneous Luttinger liquids (LL) where the properties of free fermions plus the source of inhomogeneities are reproduced exactly. The formalism of NCBT is introduced and limiting case checks, fermion commutation rules, point splitting constraints, etc. are discussed. The Green functions obtained from NCBT are expanded in powers of the fermion-fermion interaction strength (forward scattering short-range only) and c…
Bosonization provides a powerful analytical framework to deal with one-dimensional strongly interacting fermion systems, which makes it a cornerstone in quantum many-body theory. Yet, this success comes at the expense of using effective infrared parameters, and restricting the description to low energy states near the Fermi level. We propose a radical extension of the bosonization technique that overcomes both limitations, allowing computations with microscopic lattice Hamiltonians, from the Fermi level down to the bottom of the band. The formalism rests on the simple idea of representing the …
We study bosonization in 2+1 dimensions using mirror symmetry, a duality that relates pairs of supersymmetric theories. Upon breaking supersymmetry in a controlled way, we dynamically obtain the bosonization duality that equates the theory of a free Dirac fermion to QED3 with a single scalar boson. This duality may be used to demonstrate the bosonization duality relating an $O(2)$-symmetric Wilson-Fisher fixed point to QED3 with a single Dirac fermion, Peskin-Dasgupta-Halperin duality, and the recently conjectured duality relating the theory of a free Dirac fermion to fermionic QED3 with a sin…
The electron, discovered by Thomson by the end of the nineteenth century, was the first experimentally observed particle. The Weyl fermion, though theoretically predicted since a long time, was observed in a condensed matter environment in an experiment reported only a few weeks ago. Is there any linking thread connecting the first and the last observed fermion (quasi)particles? The answer is positive. By generalizing the method known as bosonization, the first time in its full complete form, for a spacetime with 3+1 dimensions, we are able to show that both electrons and Weyl fermions can be …
Massless excitations at the surface of three-dimensional time-reversal invariant topological insulators possess both fermionic and bosonic descriptions, originating from band theory and hydrodynamic BF gauge theory, respectively. We analyze the corresponding field theories of the Dirac fermion and compactified boson and compute their partition functions on the three-dimensional torus geometry. We then find some non-dynamic exact properties of bosonization in (2+1) dimensions, regarding fermion parity and spin sectors. Using these results, we extend the Fu-Kane-Mele stability argument to fracti…
In relativistic quantum field theory particles of half-integer spin must obey Fermi-Dirac statistics. Their quantum operators must anticommute at spacelike separation in contrast to commuting physical observables. We show that Fermi-Dirac spin $1/2$ operators can be emergent in a fully commuting field theory forming directed strings and loops of spin 0 and 1 constituents, reproducing massive Dirac dynamics with background fields. Such underlying description may violate relativistic invariance but there are no manifest interactions at a distance and rotation symmetry remains preserved. We show …
We describe a 2d analog of the Jordan-Wigner transformation which maps an arbitrary fermionic system on a 2d lattice to a lattice gauge theory while preserving the locality of the Hamiltonian. When the space is simply-connected, this bosonization map is an equivalence. We describe several examples of 2d bosonization, including free fermions on square and honeycomb lattices and the Hubbard model. We describe Euclidean actions for the corresponding lattice gauge theories and find that they contains Chern-Simons-like terms. Finally, we write down a fermionic dual of the gauged Ising model (the Fr…
We construct a dual bosonized description of a massless Majorana fermion in $(2+1)d$. In contrast to Dirac fermions, for which a bosonized description can be constructed using a flux attachment procedure, neutral Majorana fermions call for a different approach. We argue that the dual theory is an $SO(N)_1$ Chern-Simons gauge theory with a critical $SO(N)$ vector bosonic matter field ($N \geq 3$). The monopole of the $SO(N)$ gauge field is identified with the Majorana fermion. We provide evidence for the duality by establishing the correspondence of adjacent gapped phases and by a parton constr…
We present a bosonization procedure which replaces fermions with generalized spin variables subject to local constraints. It requires that the number of Majorana modes per lattice site matches the coordination number modulo two. If this condition is not obeyed, then bosonization introduces additional fermionic excitations not present in the original model. In the case of one Majorana mode per site on a honeycomb lattice, we recover a sector of Kitaev's model. We discuss also decagonal and rectangular geometries and present bosonization of the Hubbard model. For geometries with a boundary we fi…
We conjecture a new sequence of dualities between Chern-Simons gauge theories simultaneously coupled to fundamental bosons and fermions. These dualities reduce to those proposed by Aharony when the number of bosons or fermions is zero. Our conjecture passes a number of consistency checks. These include the matching of global symmetries and consistency with level/rank duality in massive phases.

We extend the previous results of exact bosonization, mapping from fermionic operators to Pauli matrices, in 2d and 3d to arbitrary dimensions. This bosonization map gives a duality between any fermionic system in arbitrary $n$ spatial dimensions and a new class of $(n-1)$-form $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge theories in $n$ dimensions with a modified Gauss's law. This map preserves locality and has an explicit dependence on the second Stiefel-Whitney class and a choice of spin structure on the manifold. A new formula for Stiefel-Whitney homology classes on lattices is derived. In the Euclidean path inte…
We develop a new method for bosonizing the Fermi surface based on the formalism of the coadjoint orbits. This allows one to parametrize the Fermi surface by a bosonic field that depends on the spacetime coordinates and on the position on the Fermi surface. The Wess-Zumino-Witten term in the effective action, governing the adiabatic phase acquired when the Fermi surface changes its shape, is completely fixed. As an effective field theory the action also involves a Hamiltonian which contains, beside the kinetic energy and the Landau interaction, terms with arbitrary number of derivatives and fie…
This paper establishes a precise mapping between lattice and continuum operators in theories of (1 + 1)D fermions. To reach the continuum regime of a lattice theory, renormalization group techniques are here supplemented by a new kind of decimation called smoothing out. Smoothing out amounts to imposing constraints that make fermion fields vary slowly in position space; in momentum space, this corresponds to introducing boundary conditions below a certain depth of the Dirac sea. This procedure necessitates the introduction of a second small parameter to describe the continuum limit. This lengt…
In this work we provide a bosonized version of the Thirring model in 2+1 dimensions in the case of single fermion species, where we do not have the benefit of large N expansion. In this situation there are very few analytical methods to extract nonperturbative information. Meanwhile, nontrivial behavior is expected to take place precisely in this regime. To establish the bosonization of the Thirring model, we consider a deformation of a basic fermion-boson duality relation in 2+1 dimensions. The bosonized model interpolates between the ultraviolet and infrared regimes, passing several consiste…
In this paper, we generalize Witten's non-abelian bosonization in $(1+1)$-D to two and three spatial dimensions. Our theory applies to fermions with relativistic dispersion. The bosonized theories are non-linear sigma models with level-1 Wess-Zumino-Witten terms. We apply the bosonization results to the $SU(2)$ gauge theory of the $π$-flux phase, critical spin liquids in 1,2,3 spatial dimensions, and twisted bilayer graphene.
