In this paper we propose a model of the fractional quantum Hall effect within conventional one-dimensional bosonization. It is shown that in this formalism the resulting bosonized fermion operator corresponding to momenta of Landau gauge wave function is effectively two-dimensional. At special filling factors the bulk gets gapped, and the theory is described by a sine-Gordon model. The edges are shown to be gapless, chiral, and carrying a fractional charge. The hierarchy of obtained fractional charges is consistent with existing experiments and theories. It is also possible to draw a connection to composite fermion description and to the Laughlin many-body wave function.
Bosonization dualities relate two different Chern-Simons-matter theories, with bosonic matter on one side replaced by fermionic matter on the other. We first describe a more general class of non-Abelian bosonization dualities. We then explore the non-relativistic physics of these theories in the quantum Hall regime. The bosonic theory lies in a condensed phase and admits vortices which are known to form a non-Abelian quantum Hall state. We ask how this same physics arises in the fermionic theory. We find that a condensed boson corresponds to a fully filled Landau level of fermions, while boson…

I give a brief review of higher dimensional quantum Hall effect (QHE) and how one can use a general framework to describe the lowest Landau level dynamics as a noncommutative field theory whose semiclassical limit leads to anomaly free bulk-edge effective actions in any dimension. I then present the case of QHE on complex projective spaces and focus on the entanglement entropy for integer QHE in even spatial dimensions. In the case of $ν=1$, a semiclassical analysis shows that the entanglement entropy is proportional to the phase-space area of the entangling surface with a universal overall co…
Quantum Hall inter-plateaux transitions are physical exemplars of quantum phase transitions. Near each of these transitions, the measured electrical conductivity scales with the same correlation length and dynamical critical exponents, i.e., the critical points are superuniversal. In apparent contradiction to these experiments, prior theoretical studies of quantum Hall phase transitions within the framework of Abelian Chern-Simons theory coupled to matter found correlation length exponents that depend on the value of the quantum critical Hall conductivity. Here, we use non-Abelian bosonization…
In quantum Hall edge states and in other one-dimensional interacting systems, charge fractionalization can occur due to the fact that an injected charge pulse decomposes into eigenmodes propagating at different velocities. If the original charge pulse has some spatial width due to injection with a given source-drain voltage, a finite time is needed until the separation between the fractionalized pulses is larger than their width. In the formalism of non-equilibrium bosonization, the above physics is reflected in the separation of initially overlapping square pulses in the effective scattering …
It is an important open problem to understand the landscape of non-Abelian fractional quantum Hall phases which can be obtained starting from physically motivated theories of Abelian composite particles. We show that progress on this problem can be made using recently proposed non-Abelian bosonization dualities in 2+1 dimensions, which morally relate $U(N)_k$ and $SU(k)_{-N}$ Chern-Simons-matter theories. The advantage of these dualities is that regions of the phase diagram which may be obscure on one side of the duality can be accessed by condensing local operators on the other side. Starting…
The thermal Hall conductance is a universal and topological property which characterizes the fractional quantum Hall (FQH) state. The quantized value of the thermal Hall conductance has only recently been measured experimentally in integer quantum Hall (IQH) and FQH regimes, however, the existing setup is not able to detect if the thermal current is counter-propagating or co-propagating with the charge current. Furthermore, although there is experimental evidence for heat transfer between the edge modes and the bulk, the current theories do not take this dissipation effect in consideration. In…
We study the thermal drag between two mesoscopic quantum Hall (QH) circuits. Each circuit consists of Ohmic contact perfectly coupled to quantum Hall edge states. The drag is caused by strong capacitive coupling between Ohmic contacts. The non-equilibirum conditions and the electron-electron interaction are taken into account by using the non-equilibrium bosonization technique. The thermal drag current in the passive circuit, the noise power of the corresponding heat current, and the Fano factor are calculated and analyzed.
Integrability of electron dynamics in one dimension is manifested by the non-equilibrium stationary states. They emerge near a point contact coupling two quantum Hall edges with different chemical potentials. I use the non-equilibrium bosonization technique to show that the effective temperature of such states at the fractional quantum Hall edges has a universal linear dependence on the current through the contact. In contrast, the temperature at eventual equilibrium scales as the square root of the power dissipating at the point contact. I propose to use this distinction to detect these intri…
We use the non-equilibrium bosonization technique to study the effects of Coulomb interactions in mesoscopic electron colliders based on quantum Hall (QH) edge states at filing factor $ν= 2$. The current cross-correlations and Fano factor, which carry the information about the exclusion statistics, are calculated. It is shown that both these quantities have a non-analytical dependence on the source transparency, which scales as $\log(1/T_s)$ at small $T_s \ll 1$. This is the consequence of electron-electron interactions in the outgoing non-equilibrium states of the collider.
We present an exact scheme of bosonization for anyons (including fermions) in the two-dimensional manifold of the quantum Hall fluid. This gives every fractional quantum Hall phase of the electrons one or more dual bosonic descriptions. For interacting electrons, the statistical transmutation from anyons to bosons allows us to explicitly derive the microscopic statistical interaction between the anyons, in the form of the effective two-body and few-body interactions. This also leads to a number of unexpected topological phases of the single component bosonic fractional quantum Hall effect that…
We develop a theory for the thermal Hall coefficient in a spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ system on a strip of Kagome lattice, where a chiral spin-interaction term is present. To this end, we model the Kagome strip as a three-leg $XXZ$ spin-ladder, and use Bosonization to derive a low-energy theory for the spinons in this system. Introducing further a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction ($D$) and a tunable magnetic field ($B$), we identify three distinct $B$-dependent quantum phases: a valence-bond crystal (VBC), a "metallic" spin liquid (MSL) and a chiral spin liquid (CSL). In the presence of a temperature …
We investigate a model of hard-core bosons with correlated hopping on the honeycomb lattice in an external magnetic field by means of a coupled-wire approach. It has been numerically shown that this model exhibits at half filling the bosonic integer quantum Hall (BIQH) state, which is a symmetry-protected topological phase protected by the $U(1)$ particle conservation [Y.-C. He et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 115, 116803 (2015)]. By combining the bosonization approach and a coupled-wire construction, we analytically confirm this finding and show that it even holds in the strongly anisotropic (quasi-o…
Since its experimental discovery, many phenomenological theories successfully reproduced the rapid rise from $p$ to $1+p$ found in the Hall number $n_H$ at the critical doping $p^*$ of the pseudogap in superconducting cuprates. Further comparison with experiments is now needed in order to narrow down candidates. In this paper, we consider three previously successful phenomenological theories in a unified formalism---an antiferromagnetic mean field (AF), a spiral incommensurate antiferromagnetic mean field (sAF), and the Yang-Rice-Zhang (YRZ) theory. We find a rapid rise in the specific heat an…
The point contact tunnel junctions between a one-dimensional topological superconductor and single-channel quantum Hall (QH) liquids are investigated theoretically with bosonization technology and renormalization group methods. For the $ν=1$ integer QH liquid, the universal low-energy tunneling transport is governed by the perfect Andreev reflection fixed point with quantized zero-bias conductance $G(0)=2e^{2}/h$, which can serve as a definitive fingerprint of the existence of a Majorana fermion. For the $ν=1/m$ Laughlin fractional QH liquids, its transport is governed by the perfect normal re…
Kondo lattice models have established themselves as an ideal platform for studying the interplay between topology and strong correlations such as in topological Kondo insulators or Weyl-Kondo semimetals. The nature of these systems requires the use of non-perturbative techniques which are few in number, especially in high dimensions. Motivated by this we study a model of Dirac fermions in $3+1$ dimensions coupled to an arbitrary array of spins via a generalization of functional non-Abelian bosonization. We show that there exists an exact transformation of the fermions which allows us to write …
Parafermions are non-Abelian anyons which generalize Majorana fermions and hold great promise for topological quantum computation. We study the braiding of $\mathbb{Z}_{2n}$ parafermions which have been predicted to emerge as bound states in fractional quantum Hall systems at filling factor $ν= 1/n$ ($n$ odd). Using a combination of bosonization and refermionization, we calculate the energy splitting as a function of distance and chemical potential for a pair of parafermions separated by a gapped region. Braiding of parafermions in quantum Hall edge states can be implemented by repeated fusion…
Over the years, many theoretical frameworks have been developed to understand the remarkable physics of the quantum Hall system. In this work we discuss the interplay among quantum wires, Chern-Simons theory, bosonization, and particle-vortex duality, which enable a unified approach for the Laughlin states of the fractional quantum Hall system. Starting from the so-called quantum wires system, which is a semi-microscopic description in terms of 1+1 dimensional theories, we discuss the emergence of 2+1 dimensional low-energy effective field theories by using different maps connecting the micros…
The construction of fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states from the two-dimensional array of quantum wires provides a useful way to control strong interactions in microscopic models and has been successfully applied to the Laughlin, Moore-Read, and Read-Rezayi states. We extend this construction to the Abelian and non-Abelian $SU(N-1)$-singlet FQH states at filling fraction $ν=k(N-1)/[N+k(N-1)m]$ labeled by integers $k$ and $m$, which are potentially realized in multi-component quantum Hall systems or $SU(N)$ spin systems. Utilizing the bosonization approach and conformal field theory (CFT), we …
We consider a phenomenological holographic model, inspired by the D3/D7 system with a 2+1 dimensional intersection, at finite chemical potential and magnetic field. At large 't Hooft coupling the system is unstable and needs regularization; the UV cutoff can be decoupled by considering a certain double scaling limit. At finite chemical potential the model exhibits a phase transition between states with filling fractions plus and minus one--half as the magnetic field is varied. By varying the parameters of the model, this phase transition can be made to happen at arbitrary values of the magneti…
Advancing a microscopic framework that rigorously unveils the underlying topological hallmarks of fractional quantum Hall (FQH) fluids is a prerequisite for making progress in the classification of strongly-coupled topological matter. Here we advance a second-quantization framework that helps reveal an exact fusion mechanism for particle fractionalization in FQH fluids, and uncover the fundamental structure behind the condensation of non-local operators characterizing topological order in the lowest-Landau-level (LLL). We show the first exact analytic computation of the quasielectron Berry con…
The frequency-dependent longitudinal and Hall conductivities --- $σ_{xx}$ and $σ_{xy}$ --- are dimensionless functions of $ω/T$ in 2+1 dimensional CFTs at nonzero temperature. These functions characterize the spectrum of charged excitations of the theory and are basic experimental observables. We compute these conductivities for large $N$ Chern-Simons theory with fermion matter. The computation is exact in the 't Hooft coupling $λ$ at $N = \infty$. We describe various physical features of the conductivity, including an explicit relation between the weight of the delta function at $ω= 0$ in $σ_…
We report a new many body phenomena called " Nearly order from quantum disorder phenomena" (NOFQD). We demonstrate the NOFQD in the experimentally realized weakly interacting Quantum Anomalous Hall system of spinor bosons in an optical lattice. We establish intrinsic connections between the phenomenological GL theory and the microscopic calculations on the effective potential. Connections with the bilayer quantum Hall system with a total filling factor $ ν_T=1 $ are made. Some insightful analogy with $ NAdS_2/NCFT_1 $ ( where $ N $ also means nearly ) correspondence in the context of Sachdev-Y…
We introduce a coupled wire model for a sequence of non-Abelian quantum Hall states that generalize the Z4 parafermion Read Rezayi state. The Z4 orbifold quantum Hall states occur at filling factors ν= 2/(2m-p) for odd integers $m$ and $p$, and have a topological order with a neutral sector characterized by the orbifold conformal field theory with central charge $c=1$ at radius $R=\sqrt{p/2}$. When $p=1$ the state is Abelian. The state with $p=3$ is the $Z_4$ Read Rezayi state, and the series of $p\ge 3$ defines a sequence of non-Abelian states that resembles the Laughlin sequence. Our model i…
We show that the Fractional Quantum Hall Effect can be phenomenologically described as a special flow of a quantum incompressible Euler liquid. This flow consists of a large number of vortices of the same chirality. In this approach each vortex is identified with an electron while the fluid is neutral. We show that the Laughlin wave function emerges as a stationary flow of the system of vortices in quantum fluid dynamics. Subtle features of FQHE such as effects of Lorentz shear stress, the spectral function, the Hall current in a modulated electric fields, etc., naturally follow from the hydro…
In this work, the BiFeO3 (BFO)/SrRuO3 (SRO) heterostructure was fabricated and the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) was investigated the in BFO/SRO. It is found the nonmonotonic anomalous Hall resistivity behavior in BFO/SRO is originated from the inhomogeneous SRO layer instead of the topological Hall effect. It is surprised that the AHE in BFO/SRO structure can be manipulated by ferroelectric polarization of BFO. Moreover, an inhomogeneous phenomenological model has been applied on those structure. Furthermore, the modification of band structure in SRO under ferroelectric polarization was discuss…
We show that model states of fractional quantum Hall fluids at all experimentally detected plateau can be uniquely determined by imposing translational invariance with a particular scheme of Hilbert space truncation motivated from physical local measurements. The scheme allows us to identify filling factors, topological shifts and pairing/clustering of topological quantum fluids unambiguously in a universal way without resorting to microscopic Hamiltonians. This prompts us to propose the notion of emergent commensurability as a fundamental property for at least most of the known FQH states, wh…
A finite-temperature effective free energy of the boundary of a quantized thermal Hall system is derived microscopically from the bulk two-dimensional Dirac fermion coupled with a gravitational field. In two spatial dimensions, the thermal Hall conductivity of fully gapped insulators and superconductors is quantized and given by the bulk Chern number, in analogy to the quantized electric Hall conductivity in quantum Hall systems. From the perspective of effective action functionals, two distinct types of the field theory have been proposed to describe the quantized thermal Hall effect. One of …

It has long been speculated that quasi-two-dimensional superconductivity can reappear above its semiclassical upper critical field due to Landau quantization, yet this reentrant property has never been observed. Here, we argue that twisted bilayer graphene at a magic angle (MATBG) is an ideal system in which to search for this phenomenon because its Landau levels are doubly degenerate, and its superconductivity appears already at carrier densities small enough to allow the quantum limit to be reached at relatively modest magnetic fields. We study this problem theoretically by combining a simpl…
We compute the longitudinal dc conductivity and the Hall conductivity in a two-dimensional metal with spiral magnetic order. Scattering processes are modeled by a momentum-independent relaxation rate $Γ$. We derive expressions for the conductivities, which are valid for arbitrary values of $Γ$. Both intraband and interband contributions are fully taken into account. For small $Γ$, the ratio of interband and intraband contributions is of order $Γ^2$. In the limit $Γ\to 0$, the conductivity formulas assume a simple quasiparticle form, as derived by Voruganti et. al. [Phys. Rev. B 45, 13945 (1992…
