We combine the first-quantized path-integral formalism and bosonization to develop a phenomenological theory for spin-charge coupled dynamics in one-dimensional (1D) ferromagnetic systems with strong interparticle repulsion, at low temperatures. We assume an effective spin-charge separation and retain the standard Luttinger-liquid plasmon branch, which is explicitly coupled to a ferromagnetic spin-wave texture with a quadratic dispersion. The dynamic spin structure severely suppresses the plasmon peak in the single-particle propagator, in both fermionic and bosonic systems. Our analysis provides an effective theory for the new universality class of 1D ferromagnetic systems, capturing both the trapped spin and propagating spin-wave regimes of the long-time behavior.
Zwierlein and Ketterle rely on subjective arguments and fail to recognize important differences in physical parameters between our experiment and theirs. We stand by the conclusions of our original report.
A double quantum dot device, connected to two channels that only see each other through interdot Coulomb repulsion, is analyzed using the numerical renormalization group technique. By using a two-impurity Anderson model, and parameter values obtained from experiment [S. Amasha {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 110}, 046604 (2013)], it is shown that, by applying a moderate magnetic field, and adjusting the gate potential of each quantum dot, opposing spin polarizations are created in each channel. Furthermore, through a well defined change in the gate potentials, the polarizations can be reve…
New phase of matter usually emerges when a given symmetry breaks spontaneously, which can involve charge, spin, and valley degree of freedoms. Here, we report an observation of new correlated insulators evolved from spin polarized states to valley polarized states in AB-BA stacked twisted double bilayer graphene (TDBG). The transition of the isospin polarization is a result of the competition between spin and valley, driven by the displacement field (D). At a high field |D| > 0.7 V/nm, we observe valley polarized correlated insulators with a big Zeeman g factor of ~10, both at v = 2 in the moi…

We argue that it is not possible to infer from the results of Partridge et al. (Reports, 27 January 2006, p. 503) which of their data was taken in the superfluid or normal regime, and which of their clouds are phase-separated and which are not. Some of the conclusions in this paper are inconsistent with recent experiments.
We theoretically study the correlated insulator states, quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) states, and field-induced topological transitions between different correlated states in twisted multilayer graphene systems. Taking twisted bilayer-monolayer graphene and twisted double-bilayer graphene as examples, we show that both systems stay in spin polarized, $C_{3z}$-broken insulator states with zero Chern number at 1/2 filling of the flat bands under finite displacement fields. In some cases these spin polarized, nematic insulator states are in the quantum valley Hall phase by virtue of the nontrivial…
Ferromagnetism and superconductivity typically compete with each other since the internal magnetic field generated in a magnet suppresses the formation of spin-singlet Cooper pairs in conventional superconductors. Only a handful of ferromagnetic superconductors are known in heavy fermion systems, where many-body electron interactions promoted by the narrow energy bands play a key role in stabilizing these emergent states. Recently, interaction-driven superconductivity and ferromagnetism have been demonstrated as separate phenomena in different density regimes of flat bands enabled by graphene …
We report the observation of a pairing in a number polarized two-component gas of atomic fermions. Beyond a critical polarization, the gas separates into a superfluid paired core surrounded by a shell of normal unpaired fermions. The critical polarization diminishes with decreasing attractive interaction. We also measure the parameter β= 0.54 (5) describing the universal energy of a strongly interacting Fermi gas, and find good agreement with most recent theory. These results are relevant to predictions of exotic new phases of quark matter and of strongly magnetized superconductors.
We present a Gutzwiller von Neumann dynamics (GvND) method for simulating equilibrium and nonequilibrium phenomena in strongly correlated electron systems. Our approach is a real-space formulation of the time-dependent Gutzwiller approximation method. Applying the GvND method to simulate interaction quenches in the Peierls-Hubbard model, we demonstrate the amplification of initial inhomogeneities, which in turn results in the collapse of quench-induced synchronized oscillation. Moreover, we find a dynamical phase transition separating two quasi-stationary regimes with rather distinct spatial d…
The two-band Hubbard model is used to analyze a possibility of a non-uniform charge distribution in a strongly correlated electron system with two types of charge carriers. It is demonstrated that in the limit of strong on-site Coulomb repulsion, such a system has a tendency to phase separation into the regions with different charge densities even in the absence of magnetic or any other ordering. This tendency is especially pronounced if the ratio of the bandwidths is large enough. The characteristic size of inhomogeneities is estimated accounting for the surface energy and the electrostatic e…
The spinless Falicov-Kimball model on the simple cubic lattice is analyzed in the Hubbard-I and dynamical mean field (DMFT) approximations. The Matsubara and real frequency itinerant electron Green's functions, the evolution of the system with doping, and the range of phase separation are found in two approximations. At large values of the on-site Coulomb repulsion both approximations give similar results. The phase separation can be also favorable for a more general model, where heavy electrons have a finite bandwidth. This indicates that the phase separation phenomenon is an inherent feature…
The effect of electron-lattice interaction is studied for a strongly correlated electron system described by the two-band Hubbard model. A two-fold effect of electron-lattice interaction is taken into account: in non-diagonal terms, it changes the effective bandwidth, whereas in diagonal terms, it shifts the positions of the bands and the chemical potential. It is shown that this interaction significantly affects the doping range corresponding to the electronic phase separation and can even lead to a jump-like transition between states with different values of strains.
From calculations of the high temperature series for the free energy of the two-dimensional t-J model we construct series for ratios of the free energy per hole. The ratios can be extrapolated very accurately to low temperatures and used to investigate phase separation. Our results confirm that phase separation occurs only for J/t greater than 1.2. Also, the phase transition into the phase separated state has Tc of approximately 0.25J for large J/t.
We relate the phase separation observed in many crystals with pronounced electron correlations to the regions of negative electron compressibility. They were found in several models describing strong electron correlations. At low temperatures, these regions arise near chemical potentials corresponding to the change of the ground state in the site Hamiltonian. The negative electron compressibility leads to the separation of the system into electron-rich and electron-poor domains. The energy released in the course of this separation is absorbed by phonons. Another role of phonons is to give a de…
In this paper, we found a new type of insulator - composite spin liquid which can be regarded as a short range B-type topological spin-density-wave. Composite spin liquid is topological ordered state beyond the classification of traditional spin liquid states. The elementary excitations are the "composite electrons" with both spin degree of freedom and charge degree of freedom, together with topological spin texture. This topological state supports chiral edge mode but no topological degeneracy.
We examine the effects of electron inhomogeneity on IR optical conductivity of cuprates. Nanoscopic electron inhomogeneity is believed to be inherent property of doped cuprates throughout the phase diagram beginning from electron-hole droplets in insulating parent system and ending by a topological phase separation in electron-hole bose liquid (EHBL) phase. A simple model of metal-insulator composite and effective medium theory has been used to describe the static phase separation effects. The low-frequency dynamics of topological EHBL phase in a random potential in underdoped regime has been …
We demonstrate machine-learning enabled large-scale dynamical simulations of electronic phase separation in double-exchange system. This model, also known as the ferromagnetic Kondo lattice model, is believed to be relevant for the colossal magnetoresistance phenomenon. Real-space simulations of such inhomogeneous states with exchange forces computed from the electron Hamiltonian can be prohibitively expensive for large systems. Here we show that linear-scaling exchange field computation can be achieved using neural networks trained by datasets from exact calculation on small lattices. Our Lan…
We report here on a direct and non-invasive measurement of the charge and its distribution in a Kondo correlated quantum dot (QD). A non-invasive potential-sensitive detector in proximity with the QD reveals that even though the conductance of the QD is significantly enhanced as it enters the Kondo regime the net charge in the QD remains unaffected. This demonstrates the separation between spin and charge degrees of freedom in the Kondo effect. We find however, under certain experimental conditions, that an abrupt redistribution of the charge in the QD is taking place simultaneously with the o…
We have developed a polarized hard X-ray photoemission (HAXPES) system to study the ground-state symmetry of strongly correlated materials. The linear polarization of the incoming X-ray beam is switched by the transmission-type phase retarder composed of two diamond (100) crystals. The best degree of the linear polarization $P_L$ is $-0.96$, containing the vertical polarization component of 98%. A newly developed low temperature two-axis manipulator enables easy polar and azimuthal rotations to select the detection direction of photoelectrons. The lowest temperature achieved is 9 K, offering u…
By paying attention to the hole-doped two-dimensional systems of antiferromagnetically (strongly) correlated electrons, we discuss the cause of hole-rich phase formation in association with phase separation. We show that the phase diagram obtained from the Maxwell's construction in the plane of temperature vs. hole density is consistent with one derived from the evaluation of hole-rich and electron-rich phases in real space. We observe that the formation of a hole-rich phase is attributed to the aggregation of hole pairs induced by spin singlet pairs present in the pseudogap phase and that a d…
High resolution neutron diffraction shows that the mesoscopic separation into ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) phases and the FM transition temperature T_C in the perovskite manganite (La_{1-y}Pr_{y})_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_3 strongly depend on the quenched correlated disorder. The different disorder strengths are achieved by different procedures of the sample synthesis and quantitatively characterized by the micro-strain-type diffraction peak broadening. The system shifts to predominantly one phase state with smaller T_C as the correlated disorder strength is decreased supporting the …
Previous theoretical investigations of colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) materials explain this effect using a ``clustered'' state with preformed ferromagnetic islands that rapidly align their moments with increasing external magnetic fields. While qualitatively successful, explicit calculations indicate drastically different typical resistivity values in two- and three-dimensional lattices, contrary to experimental observations. This conceptual bottleneck in the phase-separated CMR scenario is resolved here considering the cooperative nature of the Mn-oxide lattice distortions. This induces po…
The studies of high-quality single-domain crystals of YbB12 were carried out by the precise x-ray diffraction technique in combination with the low temperature polarized THz - infrared spectroscopy and accurate magnetotransport measurements. It has been shown for the first time that this archetypal strongly correlated system with a metal-insulator transition to a mysterious dielectric ground state with a metal Fermi surface (Science 362, 65-69 (2018) and ibid 362, 32-33 (2018)) is actually a heterogeneous compound in the regime of electronic phase separation. Changes in the configuration of th…
We examine the ballistic conduction through Au-NiMnSb-Au heterostructures consisting of up to four units of NiMnSb in the scattering region. We investigate the dependence of the transmission function computed within the local spin density approximation (LSDA) of the density functional theory (DFT) on the number of half-metallic units in the scattering region. For a single NiMnSb unit the transmission function displays a spin polarization of around 50 % in a window of 1 eV centered around the Fermi level. By increasing the number of layers an almost complete spin polarization of the transmissio…
Electronic phase separation consisting of the metallic and insulating domains with 50 -- 100 $μ$m in diameter is found in the organic Mott system $κ$-[($h$8-BEDT-TTF)$_{1-x}$($d$8-BEDT-TTF)$_{x}$]$_{2}$Cu[N(CN)$_{2}$]Br by means of scanning micro-region infrared spectroscopy using the synchrotron radiation. The phase separation appears below the critical end temperature 35 -- 40 K of the first order Mott transition. The observation of the macroscopic size of the domains indicates a different class of the intrinsic electronic inhomogeneity from the nano-scale one reported in the inorganic Mott …
Phase separation plays a central role in the emergence of novel functionalities of correlated electron materials. The structure of the mixed-phase states depends strongly on the nonequilibrium phase-separation dynamics, which has so far yet to be systematically investigated, especially on the theoretical side. With the aid of modern machine learning methods, we demonstrate the first-ever large-scale kinetic Monte Carlo simulations of the phase separation process for the Falicov-Kimball model, which is one of the canonical strongly correlated electron systems. We uncover an unusual phase-separa…
We investigate the properties of the frustrated underdoped Hubbard model on the square lattice using two complementary approaches, the dynamical cluster extension of dynamical mean field theory, and variational Monte Carlo simulations of Gutzwiller-Jastrow wavefunctions with backflow corrections. We compare and discuss data for the energy and the double occupancies, as obtained from both approaches. At small dopings, we observe a rapid crossover from a weakly correlated metal at low interaction strength U to a non-Fermi liquid correlated state with strong local spin correlations. Furthermore, …
We investigate the properties of strongly correlated electronic models on a flux-threaded ring connected to semi-infinite free-electron leads. The interference pattern of such an Aharonov-Bohm ring shows sharp dips at certain flux values, determined by the filling, which are a consequence of spin-charge separation in a nanoscopic system.
Spin-flip excitations in a quantum Hall electron system at fixed filling factor nu=2 are modelled and studied under conditions of a strong Coulomb interaction when the `Landau level mixing' is a dominant factor determining the excitation energy. The `one-exciton' approach used for the purely electronic excitations in question allows us to describe the Stoner transition from the unpolarized/paramgnet state to the polarized/ferromagnet one. The theoretical results are compared with the available experimental data.
We present a systematic study of quantum phases in a one-dimensional spin-polarized Fermi gas. Three comparative theoretical methods are used to explore the phase diagram at zero temperature: the mean-field theory with either an order parameter in a single-plane-wave form or a self-consistently determined order parameter using the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations, as well as the exact soluble Bethe ansatz method. We find that a spatially inhomogeneous Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov phase, which lies between the fully paired BCS state and the fully polarized normal state, dominates most of the …
We study two correlated electrons in a nearest neighbour tight- binding chain, with both on site and nearest neighbour interaction. Both the cases of parallel and antiparallel spins are considered. In addition to the free electron band for two electrons, there are correlated bands with positive or negative energy, depending on wheather the interaction parameters are repulsive or attractive. Electrons form bound states, with amplitudes that decay exponentially with separation. Conditions for such states to be filled at low temperatures are discussed.
Metastable quantum dynamics of an asymmetric triangular cluster that is coupled to a reservoir is investigated. The dynamics is governed by bath-mediated transitions, which in part require a thermal activation process. The decay rate is controlled by tuning the excitation spectrum of the frustrated cluster. We use the master equation approach and construct transition operators in terms of many-body states. We analyze dynamics of observables and reveal metastability of an excited state and of a magnetically polarized ground state.
The arrested nanoscale phase separation in a two-band Hubbard model for strongly correlated charge carriers is shown to occur in a particular range in vicinity of the topological Lifshitz transition, where the Fermi energy crosses the bottom of the narrow band and a new sheet of the Fermi surface related to the charge carriers of the second band comes into play. We determine the phase separation diagram of this two-band Hubbard model as a function of two variables, the charge carrier density and the energy shift between the chemical potential and the bottom of the second band. In this phase di…
We discuss possible patterns of electron fractionalization in strongly interacting electron systems. A popular possibility is one in which the charge of the electron has been liberated from its Fermi statistics. Such a fractionalized phase contains in it the seed of superconductivity. Another possibility occurs when the spin of the electron, rather than its charge, is liberated from its Fermi statistics. Such a phase contains in it the seed of magnetism, rather than superconductivity. We consider models in which both of these phases occur and study possible phase transitions between them. We d…
The interplay of electronic nematic modulations, magnetic order, superconductivity and structural distortions in strongly correlated electron materials calls for methods which allow characterizing them simultaneously - to allow establishing directly the relationship between these different phenomena. Spin-polarized STM enables studying both, electronic excitations as well as magnetic structure in the same measurement at the atomic scale. Here we demonstrate preparation of magnetic tips, both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic, on single crystals of FeTe. This opens up preparation of spin-pola…
Many strongly correlated transition metal oxides exhibit a metal-insulator transition (MIT), the manipulation of which is essential for their application as active device elements. However, such manipulation is hindered by lack of microscopic understanding of mechanisms involved in these transitions. A prototypical example is VO2, where previous studies indicated that the MIT resistance change correlate with changes in carrier density and mobility. We studied the MIT using Hall measurements with unprecedented resolution and accuracy, simultaneously with resistance measurements. Contrast to pri…
In order to study an interplay of disorder, correlation, and spin imbalance on antiferromagnetism, we systematically explore the ground state of one-dimensional spin-imbalanced Anderson-Hubbard model by using the density-matrix renormalization group method. We find that disorders localize the antiferromagnetic spin density wave induced by imbalanced fermions and the increase of the disorder magnitude shrinks the areas of the localized antiferromagnetized regions. Moreover, the antiferromagnetism finally disappears above a large disorder. These behaviors are observable in atomic Fermi gases loa…
Effect of geometrical frustration in strongly-correlated metallic region is studied for the Hubbard model on the kagome lattice at half filling by a cluster extension of the dynamical mean-field theory combined with a continuous-time auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo method. We find that the electron correlation enhances the spin chirality in both vector and scalar channels. The chirality grows as decreasing temperature and exhibits a peak at a low temperature, indicating a new energy scale under strong correlation. The peak temperature is considerably lower than that for the local spin mome…
Multiple energy minima of the LDA+U energy functional are obtained for $γ$-Ce when it is implemented in a full potential, rotationally invariant scheme including spin-orbit coupling, and different starting local configurations are chosen. The lowest energy solution leads to a fully spin polarized 4f state and the lattice constant of $γ$-Ce. The higher energy local minima (additional self-consistent solutions) are shown to be strongly indicative of crystal electric field and multiplet excitations.
Despite significant progress in resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) experiments on cuprates at the Cu L-edge, a theoretical understanding of the cross-section remains incomplete in terms of elementary excitations and the connection to both charge and spin structure factors. Here we use state-of-the-art, unbiased numerical calculations to study the low energy excitations probed by RIXS in undoped and doped Hubbard model relevant to the cuprates. The results highlight the importance of scattering geometry, in particular both the incident and scattered x-ray photon polarization, and demons…
We calculate the excitation spectra of a spin-polarized Hubbard chain away from half-filling, using a high-precision momentum-resolved time-dependent Density Matrix Renormalization Group method. Focusing on the U<0 case, we present in some detail the single-fermion, pair, density and spin spectra, and discuss how spin-charge separation is altered for this system. The pair spectra show a quasi-condensate at a nonzero momentum proportional to the polarization, as expected for this Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov-like superfluid.
Collective orders and photo-induced phase transitions in quantum matter can evolve on timescales which are orders of magnitude slower than the femtosecond processes related to electronic motion in the solid. Quantum Boltzmann equations can potentially resolve this separation of timescales, but are often constructed within a perturbative framework. Here we derive a quantum Boltzmann equation which only assumes a separation of timescales (taken into account through the gradient approximation for convolutions in time), but is based on a non-perturbative scattering integral, and makes no assumptio…
We introduce a qauantitative measure of spin-charge separation, $ζ(t)$ which is based on the difference between the fluctuations with respect to background of the spin and charge profiles at any time t and is suitable for studying the non-equilibrium dynamics of excitations in strongly correlated systems. This quantity is not only a direct measure of the spin-charge separation in strongly correlated systems, but its long time behaviour can further serve as a possible order parameter for the interaction induced (Mott) insulating state. Within the nu- merically exact diagonzalization we calculat…
Motivated by recent experiments indicating strong superconductivity and intricate correlated insulating and flavor-polarized physics in mirror-symmetric twisted trilayer graphene, we study the effects of interactions in this system close to the magic angle, using a combination of analytical and numerical methods. We identify asymptotically exact correlated many-body ground states at all integer filling fractions $ν$ of the flat bands. To determine their fate when moving away from these fine-tuned points, we apply self-consistent Hartree-Fock numerics and analytic perturbation theory, with good…
We study the role of particle transport and evaporation on the phase separation of an ultracold, spin-polarized atomic Fermi gas. We show that the previously observed deformation of the superfluid paired core is a result of evaporative depolarization of the superfluid due to a combination of enhanced evaporation at the center of the trap and the inhibition of spin transport at the normal-superfluid phase boundary. These factors contribute to a nonequilibrium jump in the chemical potentials at the phase boundary. Once formed, the deformed state is highly metastable, persisting for times of up t…
The thermodynamics of a lattice regularized asymmetric Anderson impurity in a correlated host is obtained by an exact solution. The crossover from the Anderson- to the Kondo-regime is studied, thus making contact with predictions by scaling theory. On the basis of the exact solution, the transition to universal Kondo behavior is shown to be realized by a graduate separation of the energy scales of spin and charge excitations.
