Strong repulsive interactions in a one-dimensional electron system suppress the exchange coupling J of electron spins to a value much smaller than the Fermi energy E_F. The conventional theoretical description of such systems based on the bosonization approach and the concept of Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid is applicable only at energies below J. In this paper we develop a theoretical approach valid at all energies below the Fermi energy, including a broad range of energies between J and E_F. The method involves bosonization of the charge degrees of freedom, while the spin excitations are treated exactly. We use this technique to calculate the spectral functions of strongly interacting electron systems at energies in the range J<<epsilon<< E_F$. We show that in addition to the expected features at the wavevector k near the Fermi point k_F, the spectral function has a strong peak centered at k=0. Our theory also provides analytical description of the spectral function singularities near 3k_F (the "shadow band" features).
We demonstrate that the plasmon in one-dimensional Coulomb interacting electron fluids can develop a finite-momentum maxon-roton-like nonmonotonic energy-momentum dispersion. Such an unusual nonmonotonicity arises from the strongly interacting $1/r$ Coulomb potential going beyond the conventional band linearization approximation used in the standard bosonization theories of Luttinger liquids. We provide details for the nonmonotonic plasmon dispersion using both bosonization and RPA theories. We also calculate the specific heat including the nonmonotonicity and discuss possibilities for observi…
A characteristic feature of Shiba impurities is the existence of a spin- and parity-changing quantum phase transition (known as "0-$π$" transition) which has been observed in scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and transport experiments. Using the Abelian bosonization technique, here we analyze the ground-state properties and the quantum phase diagram of a classical (i.e., Ising-like) Shiba impurity. In particular, we analyze the cases of an impurity in a three- and a one-dimensional superconductor. Within the bosonization framework, the ground-state properties are determined by simple soliton…
We study the flat-band ferromagnetic phase of the Haldane-Hubbard model on a honeycomb lattice within a bosonization scheme for flat-band Chern insulators, focusing on the calculation of the spin-wave excitation spectrum. We consider the Haldane-Hubbard model with the noninteracting lower bands in a nearly-flat band limit, previously determined for the spinless model, and at 1/4-filling of its corresponding noninteracting limit. Within the bosonization scheme, the Haldane-Hubbard model is mapped into an effective interacting boson model, whose quadratic term allows us to determine the spin-wav…
We study one dimensional clean systems with few channels and strong electron-electron interactions. We find that in several circumstances, even when time reversal symmetry holds, they may lead to two terminal fractional quantized conductance and fractional shot noise. The condition on the commensurability of the Fermi momenta of the different channels and the strength of interactions resulting in such remarkable phenomena are explored using abelian bosonization. Finite temperature and length effects are accounted for by a generalization of the Luther-Emery re-fermionization at specific values …
