We prove that the action of the automorphism group of a building on its boundary is topologically amenable. The notion of boundary we use was defined in a previous paper \cite{CL}. It follows from this result that such groups have property (A), and thus satisfy the Novikov conjecture. It may also lead to applications in rigidity theory.
Extensive amenability is a property of group actions which has recently been used as a tool to prove amenability of groups. We study this property and prove that it is preserved under a very general construction of semidirect products. As an application, we establish the amenability of all subgroups of the group IET of interval exchange transformations that have angular components of rational rank~${\leq 2}$. In addition, we obtain a reformulation of extensive amenability in terms of inverted orbits and use it to present a purely probabilistic proof that recurrent actions are extensively amena…
For a finitely generated group $G$ the Nielsen graph $N_n(G)$, $n\geq \operatorname{rank}(G)$, describes the action of the group $\operatorname{Aut}F_n$ of automorphisms of the free group $F_n$ on generating $n$-tuples of G by elementary Nielsen moves. The question of (non)amenability of Nielsen graphs is of particular interest in relation with the open question about Property $(T)$ for $\operatorname{Aut}F_n$, $n\geq 4$. We prove nonamenability of Nielsen graphs $N_n(G)$ for all $n\ge \max\{2,\operatorname{rank}(G)\}$ when $G$ is indicable, and for $n$ big enough when $G$ is elementary amenab…
Generalizing Block and Weinberger's characterization of amenability we introduce the notion of uniformly finite homology for a group action on a compact space and use it to give a homological characterization of topological amenability for actions. By considering the case of the natural action of $G$ on its Stone-\vCech compactification we obtain a homological characterization of exactness of the group, answering a question of Nigel Higson.
We construct a geometric model for the mapping class group M of a non-exceptional oriented surface of finite type and use it to show that the action of M on the compact Hausdorff space of complete geodesic laminations is topologically amenable. As a consequence, the Novikov higher signature conjecture holds for every subgroup of M.
We use $\mathrm{C}^{\ast}$-algebra ultrapowers to give a new construction of the Stone-Cech compactification of a separable, locally compact space. We use this construction to give a new proof of the fact that groups that act isometrically, properly, and transitively on trees are boundary amenable.
In this work we introduce and study a new notion of amenability for actions of locally compact groups on $C^*$-algebras. Our definition extends the definition of amenability for actions of discrete groups due to Claire Anantharaman-Delaroche. We show that our definition has several characterizations and permanence properties analogous to those known in the discrete case. For example, for actions on commutative $C^*$-algebras, we show that our notion of amenability is equivalent to measurewise amenability. Combined with a recent result of Alex Bearden and Jason Crann, this also settles a long s…
We show that if $H$ is a quasiconvex subgroup of infinite index in a non-elementary hyperbolic group $G$ then the Schreier coset graph $X$ for $G$ relative to $H$ is non-amenable (that is, $X$ has positive Cheeger constant). We present some corollaries regading the Martin boundary and Martin compactification of $X$ and the co-growth of $H$ in $G$.
We prove that $Out(F_N)$ is boundary amenable. This also holds more generally for $Out(G)$, where $G$ is either a toral relatively hyperbolic group or a finitely generated right-angled Artin group. As a consequence, all these groups satisfy the Novikov conjecture on higher signatures.
Let K be a fine hyperbolic graph and G be a group acting on K with finite quotient. We prove that G is exact provided that all vertex stabilizers are exact. In particular, a relatively hyperbolic group is exact if all its peripheral groups are exact. We prove this by showing that the group G acts amenably on a compact topological space. We include some applications to the theories of group von Neumann algebras and of measurable orbit equivalence relations.
We study the action of groups generated by bounded activity automata with infinite alphabets on their orbital Schreier graphs. We introduce an amenability criterion for such groups based on the recurrence of the first level action. This criterion is a natural extension of the result that all groups generated by bounded activity automata with finite alphabets are amenable. Our motivation comes from the investigation of iterated monodromy groups of entire functions.
Liouville property of actions of discrete groups can be reformulated in terms of existence co-F$ø$lner sets. Since every action of amenable group is Liouville, the property can be served as an approach for proving non-amenability. The verification of this property is conceptually different than finding a non-amenable action. There are many groups that are defined by strongly transitive actions. In some cases amenability of such groups is an open problem. We define $n$-Liouville property of action to be Liouville property of point-wise action of the group on the sets of cardinality $n$. We refo…
We observe that a Polish group $G$ is amenable if and only if every continuous action of $G$ on the Hilbert cube admits an invariant probability measure. This generalizes a result of Bogatyi and Fedorchuk. We also show that actions on the Cantor space can be used to detect amenability and extreme amenability of Polish non-archimedean groups as well as amenability at infinity of discrete countable groups. As corollary, the latter property can also be tested by actions on the Hilbert cube. These results generalize a criterion due to Giordano and de la Harpe.
In this thesis, we study the existence of universal objets of two differents types in the theory of topological groups and theirs actions on compacts spaces. In the first part, we contribute to the problem of existence of test spaces for amenability. We observe that a Polish group is amenable if and only if its every continuous action on the Hilbert cube admits an invariant probability measure. This generalizes a result of Bogatyi and Fedorchuk. We also show that actions on the Cantor space can be used to detect amenability and extreme amenability of Polish non-archimedean groups as well as am…
The goal is to extend a non-standard amenability test for groups, based on random walks and superharmonic functions, to group actions on sets, and to apply it to Thompson's group F using certain properties of extensive amenability. While no conclusive answer regarding the amenability of F is given, the approach is helpful in developing a new potentially useful criterion and testing it on a significant subclass of superharmonic functions.
The recent breakthrough works [6,8,9] which established the amenability for new classes of groups, lead to the following question: is the action $W(\mathbb{Z}^d) \curvearrowright \mathbb{Z}^d$ extensively amenable? (Where $W(\mathbb{Z}^d)$ is the {\em wobbling group} of permutations $σ:\mathbb{Z}^d \to \mathbb{Z}^d$ with bounded range). This is equivalent to asking whether the action $(\mathbb{Z}/2\ \mathbb{Z})^{(\mathbb{Z}^d)} \rtimes W(\mathbb{Z}^d) \curvearrowright (\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z})^{(\mathbb{Z}^d)}$ is amenable. The $d=1$ and $d=2$ and have been settled respectively in [6,8]. By [9]…
We prove that amenability of a discrete group is equivalent to dimension flatness of certain ring inclusions naturally associated with measure preserving actions of the group. This provides a group-measure space theoretic solution to a conjecture of Lück stating that amenability of a group is characterized by dimension flatness of the inclusion of its complex group algebra into the associated von Neumann algebra.
The original definition of amenability given by von Neumann in the highly non-constructive terms of means was later recast by Day using approximately invariant probability measures. Moreover, as it was conjectured by Furstenberg and proved by Kaimanovich-Vershik and Rosenblatt, the amenability of a locally compact group is actually equivalent to the existence of a single probability measure on the group with the property that the sequence of its convolution powers is asymptotically invariant. In the present article we extend this characterization of amenability to measured groupoids. It implie…
Let G be a locally compact topological group and X a compact space with continuous G-action. The main result of this essay states that the following statements are equivalent : 1) The action of G on X is topologically amenable ; 2) Every dual (G, X)-module of type C is a relatively injective Banach G-module ; 3) There is a G-invariant element in the double dual of C(X, L1(G)).
We say that a countable group $G$ is McDuff if it admits a free ergodic probability measure preserving action such that the crossed product is a McDuff II_1 factor. Similarly, $G$ is said to be stable if it admits such an action with the orbit equivalence relation being stable. The McDuff property, stability, inner amenability and property Gamma are subtly related and several implications and non implications were obtained in [Ef73,JS85,Va09,Ki12a,Ki12b]. We complete the picture with the remaining implications and counterexamples.
Let $Γ$ be a countable group acting on a countable set $X$ by permutations. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for the action to have a quasi-invariant mean with a given cocycle. This can be viewed as a combinatorial analogue of the condition for the existence of a quasi-invariant measure in the Borel case given by Miller. Then we show a geometric condition that guarantees that the corresponding action on the Stone-Čech compactification is Zimmer amenable. The geometric condition (weighted hyperfiniteness) resembles Property A. We do not know the exact relation between the two notion…
We prove that if G is a discrete group that admits a metrically proper action on a finite-dimensional CAT(0) cube complex X, then G is weakly amenable. We do this by constructing uniformly bounded Hilbert space representations for which the quantities z^{l(g)} are matrix coefficients. Here l is a length function on G obtained from the combinatorial distance function on the complex X.
A group is said to be strongly amenable if each of its proximal topological actions has a fixed point. We show that a finitely generated group is strongly amenable if and only if it is virtually nilpotent. More generally, a countable discrete group is strongly amenable if and only if none of its quotients have the infinite conjugacy class property.
We study skew-amenable topological groups, i.e., those admitting a left-invariant mean on the space of bounded real-valued functions left-uniformly continuous in the sense of Bourbaki. We prove characterizations of skew-amenability for topological groups of isometries and automorphisms, clarify the connection with extensive amenability of group actions, establish a Følner-type characterization, and discuss closure properties of the class of skew-amenable topological groups. Moreover, we isolate a dynamical sufficient condition for skew-amenability and provide several concrete variations of thi…
Let $Γ'<Γ$ be two discrete groups acting properly by isometries on a Gromov-hyperbolic space $X$. We prove that their critical exponents coincide if and only if $Γ'$ is co-amenable in $Γ$, under the assumption that the action of $Γ$ on $X$ is strongly positively recurrent, i.e. has a growth gap at infinity. This generalizes all previously known results on this question, which required either $X$ to be the real hyperbolic space and $Γ$ geometrically finite, or $X$ Gromov hyperbolic and $Γ$ cocompact. This result is optimal: we provide several counterexamples when the action is not strongly posi…
This text surveys classical and recent results in the field of amenability of groups, from a combinatorial standpoint. It has served as the support of courses at the University of Göttingen and the École Normale Supérieure. The goals of the text are (1) to be as self-contained as possible, so as to serve as a good introduction for newcomers to the field; (2) to stress the use of combinatorial tools, in collaboration with functional analysis, probability etc., with discrete groups in focus; (3) to consider from the beginning the more general notion of amenable actions; (4) to describe recent cl…
We show that a large class of i.c.c., countable, discrete groups satisfying a weak negative curvature condition are not inner amenable. By recent work of Hull and Osin, our result recovers that mapping class groups and Out(F_n) are not inner amenable. We also show that the group-measure space constructions associated to free, strongly ergodic p.m.p. actions of such groups do not have property Gamma of Murray and von Neumann.
In a previous paper the authors developed an operator-algebraic approach to Lewis Bowen's sofic measure entropy that yields invariants for actions of countable sofic groups by homeomorphisms on a compact metrizable space and by measure-preserving transformations on a standard probability space. We show here that these measure and topological entropy invariants both coincide with their classical counterparts when the acting group is amenable.
We show that topological amenability of an action of a countable discrete group on a compact space is equivalent to the existence of an invariant mean for the action. We prove also that this is equivalent to vanishing of bounded cohomology for a class of Banach G-modules associated to the action, as well as to vanishing of a specific cohomology class. In the case when the compact space is a point our result reduces to a classic theorem of B.E. Johnson characterising amenability of groups. In the case when the compact space is the Stone-Čech compactification of the group we obtain a cohomologic…
This paper is devoted to the study of universality for a particular continuous action naturally attached to certain pairs of closed subgroups of $S_{\infty}$. It shows that three new concepts, respectively called relative extreme amenability, relative Ramsey property for embeddings, and relative Ramsey property for structures, are relevant in order to understand this property correctly. It also allows to provide a partial answer to a question posed by Kechris, Pestov and Todorcevic.
We show that for any abelian topological group $G$ and arbitrary diffused submeasure $μ$, every continuous action of $L_0(μ,G)$ on a compact space has a fixed point. This generalizes earlier results of Herer and Christensen, Glasner, Furstenberg and Weiss, and Farah and Solecki. This also answers a question posed by Farah and Solecki. In particular, it implies that if $H$ is of the form $L_0(μ,\mathbb{R})$, then $H$ is extremely amenable if and only if $H$ has no nontrivial characters, which gives an evidence for an affirmative answer to a question of Pestov. The proof is based on estimates of…
This note describes the first example of a group that is amenable, but cannot be obtained by subgroups, quotients, extensions and direct limits from the class of groups locally of subexponential growth. It has a balanced presentation \[Δ= < b,t|[b,t^2]b^{-1},[[[b,t^{-1}],b],b]>.\] I show that it acts transitively on a 3-regular tree, and that $Γ=< b,b^{t^{-1}}$ stabilizes a vertex and acts by restriction on a binary rooted tree. $Γ$ is a "fractal group", generated by a 3-state automaton, and is a discrete analogue of the monodromy action of iterates of f(z)=z^2-1 on associated coverings of the…
We here consider inner amenability from a geometric and group theoretical perspective. We prove that for every non-elementary action of a group $G$ on a finite dimensional irreducible CAT(0) cube complex, there is a nonempty $G$-invariant closed convex subset such that every conjugation invariant mean on $G$ gives full measure to the stabilizer of each point of this subset. Specializing our result to trees leads to a complete characterization of inner amenability for HNN-extensions and amalgamated free products. One novelty of the proof is that it makes use of the existence of certain idempote…
We prove a general version of the amenability conjecture in the unified setting of a Gromov hyperbolic group G acting properly cocompactly either on its Cayley graph, or on a CAT(-1)-space. Namely, for any subgroup H of G, we show that H is co-amenable in G if and only if their exponential growth rates (with respect to the prescribed action) coincide. For this, we prove a quantified, representation-theoretical version of Stadlbauer's amenability criterion for group extensions of a topologically transitive subshift of finite type, in terms of the spectral radii of the classical Ruelle transfer …
We study $2$-dimensional Artin groups of hyperbolic type from the viewpoint of measure equivalence, and establish rigidity theorems. We first prove that they are boundary amenable. So is every group acting discretely by simplicial isometries on a connected piecewise hyperbolic $\mathrm{CAT}(-1)$ simplicial complex with countably many simplices in finitely many isometry types, assuming that vertex stabilizers are boundary amenable. Consequently, they satisfy the Novikov conjecture. We then show that measure equivalent $2$-dimensional Artin groups of hyperbolic type have isomorphic fixed set gra…
We prove that the alternating group of a topologically free action of a countably infinite group $Γ$ on the Cantor set has the property that all of its $\ell^2$-Betti numbers vanish and, in the case that $Γ$ is amenable, is stable in the sense of Jones and Schmidt and has property Gamma (and in particular is inner amenable). We show moreover in the realm of amenable $Γ$ that there are many such alternating groups which are simple, finitely generated, and C$^*$-simple. The device for establishing nonisomorphism among these examples is a topological version of Austin's result on the invariance o…
Let G be one of the local gauge groups C(X,U(n)), C^\infty(X,U(n)), C(X,SU(n)) or C^\infty(X,SU(n)) where X is a compact Riemannian manifold. We observe that G has a nontrivial group topology, coarser than its natural topology, w.r.t. which it is amenable, viz the relative weak topology of C(X,M(n)). This topology seems more useful than other known amenable topologies for G. We construct a simple fermionic model containing an action of G, continuous w.r.t. this amenable topology.
We study amenability of definable and topological groups. Among our main technical tools is an elaboration on and strengthening of the Massicot-Wagner version of the stabilizer theorem, and some results around measures. As an application we show that if $G$ is an amenable topological group, then the Bohr compactification of $G$ coincides with a certain "weak Bohr compactification" introduced in [24]. Formally, $G^{00}_{topo} = G^{000}_{topo}$. We also prove wide generalizations of this result, implying in particular its extension to a "definable-topological" context, confirming the main conjec…
By the work of Brodzki-Niblo-Nowak-Wright and Monod, topological amenability of a continuous group action can be characterized using uniformly finite homology groups or bounded cohomology groups associated to this action. We show that (certain variations of) these groups are invariants for topologically free actions under continuous orbit equivalence.
We show that amenability of a group acting by homeomorphisms can be deduced from a certain local property of the action and recurrency of the orbital Schreier graphs. This covers amenability of a wide class groups, the amenability of which was an open problem, as well as unifies many known examples to one general proof. In particular, this includes Grigorchuk's group, Basilica group, the full topological group of Cantor minimal system, groups acting on rooted trees by bounded automorphisms, groups generated by finite automata of linear activity growth, groups that naturally appear in holomorph…
This is an expostion of various aspects of amenability and paradoxical decompositions for groups, group actions and metric spaces. First, we review the formalism of pseudogroups, which is well adapted to stating the alternative of Tarski, according to which a pseudogroup without invariant mean gives rise to paradoxical decompositions, and to defining a Følner condition. Using a Hall-Rado Theorem on matchings in graphs, we show then for pseudogroups that existence of an invariant mean is equivalent to the Følner condition; in the case of the pseudogroup of bounded perturbations of the identity …
We study actions of discrete groups on Hilbert $C^*$-modules induced from topological actions on compact Hausdorff spaces. We show non-amenability of actions of non-amenable and non-a-T-menable groups, provided there exists a quasi-invariant probability measure which is sufficiently close to being invariant.
The work discusses equivariant asymptotic dimension (also known as "wide equivariant covers", "$N$-$\mathcal F$-amenability" or "amenability dimension", and "$d$-BLR condition") and its generalisation, transfer reducibility, which are versions of asymptotic dimension invented for the proofs of the Farrell--Jones and Borel conjectures. We prove that groups of null equivariant asymptotic dimension are exactly virtually cyclic groups. We show that a covering of the boundary always extends to a covering of the whole compactification. We provide a number of characterisations of equivariant asymptot…
It is shown that $2β_1(\G)\leq h(\G)$ for any countable group $\G$, where $β_1(\G)$ is the first $\ell^2$-Betti number and $h(\G)$ the uniform isoperimetric constant. In particular, a countable group with non-vanishing first $\ell^2$-Betti number is uniformly non-amenable. We then define isoperimetric constants in the framework of measured equivalence relations. For an ergodic measured equivalence relation $R$ of type $\IIi$, the uniform isoperimetric constant $h(R)$ of $R$ is invariant under orbit equivalence and satisfies $$ 2β_1(R)\leq 2C(R)-2\leq h(R), $$ where $β_1(\R)$ is the first $\ell…
We consider actions of locally compact groups $G$ on certain CAT(0) spaces $X$ by isometries. The CAT(0) spaces we consider have finite dimension at large scale. In case $B$ is a $G$-boundary, that is a measurable $G$-space with amenability and ergodicity properties, we prove the existence of equivariant maps from $B$ to the visual boundary $\partial X$.
We show the equivalence of several amenability type conditions for C*-dynamical systems. As an application, based on the Pimsner--Meyer construction, we give a new method to produce amenable actions on simple C*-algebras.
We propose a fixed-point property for group actions on cones in topological vector spaces. In the special case of equicontinuous actions, we prove that this property always holds; this statement extends the classical Ryll-Nardzewski theorem for Banach spaces. When restricting to cones that are locally compact in the weak topology, we prove that the property holds for all distal actions, thus extending the general Ryll-Nardzewski theorem for all locally convex spaces. Returning to arbitrary actions, the proposed fixed-point property becomes a group property, considerably stronger than amenabili…
Let $ G $ be a countable discrete group and consider a nonsingular Bernoulli shift action $ G \curvearrowright \prod_{g\in G }(\{0,1\},μ_g)$ with two base points. When $ G $ is exact, under a certain finiteness assumption on the measures $\{μ_g\}_{g\in G }$, we construct a boundary for the Bernoulli crossed product C$^*$-algebra that admits some commutativity and amenability in the sense of Ozawa's bi-exactness. As a consequence, we obtain that any such Bernoulli action is solid. This generalizes solidity of measure preserving Bernoulli actions by Ozawa and Chifan--Ioana, and is the first rigi…
