We show that for any abelian topological group $G$ and arbitrary diffused submeasure $μ$, every continuous action of $L_0(μ,G)$ on a compact space has a fixed point. This generalizes earlier results of Herer and Christensen, Glasner, Furstenberg and Weiss, and Farah and Solecki. This also answers a question posed by Farah and Solecki. In particular, it implies that if $H$ is of the form $L_0(μ,\mathbb{R})$, then $H$ is extremely amenable if and only if $H$ has no nontrivial characters, which gives an evidence for an affirmative answer to a question of Pestov. The proof is based on estimates of chromatic numbers of certain graphs on $\mathbb{Z}^n$. It uses tools from algebraic topology and builds on the work of Farah and Solecki.
It was shown in [A. Azimifard, E. Samei, N. Spronk, JFA 2009; arxiv 0805.3685] that the ZL-amenability constant of a finite group is always at least 1, with equality if and only if the group is abelian. It was also shown in the same paper that for any finite non-abelian group this invariant is at least 301/300, but the proof relies crucially on a deep result of D. A. Rider on norms of central idempotents in group algebras. Here we show that if G is finite and non-abelian then its ZL-amenability constant is at least 7/4, which is known to be best possible. We avoid use of Rider's result, by ana…
We provide an alternative proof for the extreme amenability of the unitary group of the hyperfinite II${}_1$-factor von Neumann algebra, endowed with the strong operator topology.
Let $G$ be a locally compact group. We show that its Fourier algebra $A(G)$ is amenable if and only if $G$ has an abelian subgroup of finite index, and that its Fourier-Stieltjes algebra $B(G)$ is amenable if and only if $G$ has a compact, abelian subgroup of finite index. We then show that $A(G)$ is weakly amenable if the component of the identity of $G$ is abelian, and we prove some partial results towards the converse.
We let the central Fourier algebra, ZA(G), be the subalgebra of functions u in the Fourier algebra A(G) of a compact group, for which u(xyx^{-1})=u(y) for all x,y in G. We show that this algebra admits bounded point derivations whenever G contains a non-abelian closed connected subgroup. Conversely when G is virtually abelian, then ZA(G) is amenable. Furthermore, for virtually abelian G, we establish which closed ideals admit bounded approximate identities. We also show that if ZA(G) is weakly amenable, even hyper-Tauberian, exactly when G admits no non-abelian connected subgroup. We also stud…
Rajchman measures of locally compact Abelian groups are studied for almost a century now, and they play an important role in the study of trigonometric series. Eymard's influential work allowed generalizing these measures to the case of \emph{non-Abelian} locally compact groups $G$. The Rajchman algebra of $G$, which we denote by $B_0(G)$, is the set of all elements of the Fourier-Stieltjes algebra that vanish at infinity. In the present article, we characterize the locally compact groups that have amenable Rajchman algebras. We show that $B_0(G)$ is amenable if and only if $G$ is compact and …
Let $G$ be a locally compact group, and let $B(G)$ denote its Fourier--Stieltjes algebra. We show that $B(G)$ is Connes-amenable if and only if $G$ is almost abelian.
We show that for a connected Lie group $G$, its Fourier algebra $A(G)$ is weakly amenable only if $G$ is abelian. Our main new idea is to show that weak amenability of $A(G)$ implies that the anti-diagonal, $\checkΔ_G=\{(g,g^{-1}):g\in G\}$, is a set of local synthesis for $A(G\times G)$. We then show that this cannot happen if $G$ is non-abelian. We conclude for a locally compact group $G$, that $A(G)$ can be weakly amenable only if it contains no closed connected non-abelian Lie subgroups. In particular, for a Lie group $G$, $A(G)$ is weakly amenable if and only if its connected component of…
We show that if $G$ is an amenable topological group, then the topological group $L^{0}(G)$ of strongly measurable maps from $([0,1],λ)$ into $G$ endowed with the topology of convergence in measure is whirly amenable, hence extremely amenable. Conversely, we prove that a topological group $G$ is amenable if $L^{0}(G)$ is.
We calculate the exact amenability constant of the centre of $\ell^1(G)$ when $G$ is one of the following classes of finite group: dihedral; extraspecial; or Frobenius with abelian complement and kernel. This is done using a formula which applies to all finite groups with two character degrees. In passing, we answer in the negative a question raised in work of the third author with Azimifard and Spronk (J. Funct. Anal. 2009).
Extending M.\ Daws' definition of ultra-amenable Banach algebras, we introduce the notion of operator ultra-amenability for completely contractive Banach algebras. For a locally compact group $G$, we show that the operator ultra-amenability of $A(G)$ imposes severe restrictions on $G$. In particular, it forces $G$ to be a discrete, amenable group with no infinite abelian subgroups. For various classes of such groups, this means that $G$ is finite.
Let G be a locally compact abelian group, $ω:G\to (0,\infty)$ be a weight, and ($Φ$,$Ψ$) be a complementary pair of strictly increasing continuous Young functions. We show that for the weighted Orlicz algebra $L^Φ_ω(G)$, the weak amenability is obtained under conditions similar to the one considered by Y. Zhang for weighted group algebras. Our methods can be applied to various families of weighted Orlicz algebras, including weighted $L^p$-spaces.
For a locally compact group $G$, let $A(G)$ denote its Fourier algebra and $\hat{G}$ its dual object, i.e. the collection of equivalence classes of unitary represenations of $G$. We show that the amenability constant of $A(G)$ is less than or equal to $\sup \{°(π) : π\in \hat{G} \}$ and that it is equal to one if and only if $G$ is abelian.
We give for a compact group G, a full characterisation of when its Fourier algebra A(G) is weakly amenable: when the connected component of the identity G_e is abelian. This condition is also equivalent to the hyper-Tauberian property for A(G), and to having the anti-diagonal D^v={(s,s^{-1}):s is in G} being a set of spectral synthesis for A(GXG). We show the relationship between amenability and weak amenability of A(G), and (operator) amenability and (operator) weak amenability of A_D(G), an algebra defined by the authors in arXiv:0705.4277. We close by extending our results to some classes o…
In this paper we first show that for a locally compact amenable group $G$, every proper abstract Segal algebra of the Fourier algebra on $G$ is not approximately amenable; consequently, every proper Segal algebra on a locally compact abelian group is not approximately amenable. Then using the hypergroup generated by the dual of a compact group, it is shown that all proper Segal algebras of a class of compact groups including the $2\times 2$ special unitary group, SU(2), are not approximately amenable.
Let $G$ be a restricted direct product of finite groups $\{G_i \}_{i\in I}$, and let $\Zl^1(G)$ denote the centre of its group algebra. We show that $\Zl^1(G)$ is amenable if and only if $G_i$ is abelian for all but finitely many $i$, and characterize the maximal ideals of $\Zl^1(G)$ which have bounded approximate identities. We also study when an algebra character of $\Zl^1(G)$ belongs to $c_0$ or $\ell^p$ and provide a variety of examples.
We establish a characterization of amenability for general Hausdorff topological groups in terms of matchings with respect to finite uniform coverings. Furthermore, we prove that it suffices to just consider two-element uniform coverings. We also show that extremely amenable as well as compactly approximable topological groups satisfy a perfect matching property condition -- the latter even with regard to arbitrary uniform coverings. Finally, we prove that the automorphism group of a Fraïssé limit of a metric Fraïssé class is amenable if and only if the considered metric Fraïssé class has a ce…
Let G be a locally compact group, and let A(G) and B(G) denote its Fourier and Fourier-Stieltjes algebras. These algebras are dual objects of the group and measure algebras, L^1(G) and M(G), in a sense which generalizes the Pontryagin duality theorem on abelian groups. We wish to consider the amenability properties of A(G) and B(G) and compare them to such properties for L^1(G) and M(G). For us, ``amenability properties'' refers to amenability, weak amenability, and biflatness, as well as some properties which are more suited to special settings, such as the hyper-Tauberian property for semisi…
For a locally compact Abelian group $G$ and a continuous weight function $ω$ on $G$ we show that the Beurling algebra $L^1(G, ω)$ is weakly amenable if and only if there is no nontrivial continuous group homomorphism $ϕ$: $G\to \mathbb{C}$ such that $\sup_{t\in G}\frac{|ϕ(t)|}{ω(t)ω(t^{-1})} < \infty$. Let $\hatω(t) = \limsup_{s\to \infty}ω(ts)/ω(s)$ ($t\in G$). Then $L^1(G, ω)$ is 2-weakly amenable if there is a constant $m> 0$ such that $\liminf_{n\to \infty}\frac{ω(t^n)\hatω(t^{-n})}{n} \leq m$ for all $t\in G$.
A special case of a conjecture raised by Forrest and Runde (Math. Zeit., 2005) asserts that the Fourier algebra of every non-abelian connected Lie group fails to be weakly amenable; this was aleady known to hold in the non-abelian compact cases, by earlier work of Johnson (JLMS, 1994) and Plymen (unpublished note). In recent work (JFA, 2014) the present authors verified this conjecture for the real ax+b group and hence, by structure theory, for any semisimple Lie group. In this paper we verify the conjecture for all 1-connected, non-abelian nilpotent Lie groups, by reducing the problem to the …
In this note we study two related questions. (1) For a compact group G, what are the ranges of the convolution maps on A(GXG) given for u,v in A(G) by $u X v |-> u*v' ($v'(s)=v(s^{-1})$) and $u X v |-> u*v$? (2) For a locally compact group G and a compact subgroup K, what are the amenability properties of the Fourier algebra of the coset space A(G/K)? The algebra A(G/K) was defined and studied by the first named author. In answering the first question, we obtain for compact groups which do not admit an abelian subgroup of finite index, some new subalgebras of A(G). Using those algebras we can …
Using techniques of non-abelian harmonic analysis, we construct an explicit, non-zero cyclic derivation on the Fourier algebra of the real $ax+b$ group. In particular this provides the first proof that this algebra is not weakly amenable. Using the structure theory of Lie groups, we deduce that the Fourier algebras of connected, semisimple Lie groups also support non-zero, cyclic derivations and are likewise not weakly amenable. Our results complement earlier work of Johnson (JLMS, 1994), Plymen (unpublished note) and Forrest--Samei--Spronk (IUMJ 2009). As an additional illustration of our tec…
We prove that a discrete group $G$ is amenable iff it is strongly unitarizable in the following sense: every unitarizable representation $π$ on $G$ can be unitarized by an invertible chosen in the von Neumann algebra generated by the range of $π$. Analogously a $C^*$-algebra $A$ is nuclear iff any bounded homomorphism $u: A\to B(H)$ is strongly similar to a $*$-homomorphism in the sense that there is an invertible operator $ξ$ in the von Neumann algebra generated by the range of $u$ such that $a\to ξu(a) ξ^{-1}$ is a $*$-homomorphism. An analogous characterization holds in terms of derivations…
We study topological groups $G$ for which the universal minimal $G$-system $M(G)$, or the universal irreducible affine $G$-system $IA(G)$ are tame. We call such groups intrinsically tame and convexly intrinsically tame. These notions are generalized versions of extreme amenability and amenability, respectively. When $M(G)$, as a $G$-system, admits a circular order we say that $G$ is intrinsically circularly ordered. This implies that $G$ is intrinsically tame. We show that for every circularly ultrahomogeneous action $G \curvearrowright X$ on a circularly ordered set $X$ the topological group …
We prove that, if $G$ is a second-countable topological group with a compatible right-invariant metric $d$ and $(μ_{n})_{n \in \mathbb{N}}$ is a sequence of compactly supported Borel probability measures on $G$ converging to invariance with respect to the mass transportation distance over $d$ and such that $\left(\mathrm{spt} \, μ_{n}, d\!\!\upharpoonright_{\mathrm{spt} \, μ_{n}}, μ_{n}\!\!\upharpoonright_{\mathrm{spt} \, μ_{n}}\right)_{n \in \mathbb{N}}$ concentrates to a fully supported, compact $mm$-space $\left(X,d_{X},μ_{X}\right)$, then $X$ is homeomorphic to a $G$-invariant subspace of …
