Let V be a complex vector space with basis {x_1,x_2,...,x_n} and G be a finite subgroup of GL(V). The tensor algebra T(V) over the complex is isomorphic to the polynomials in the non-commutative variables x_1, x_2,..., x_n with complex coefficients. We want to give a combinatorial interpretation for the decomposition of T(V) into simple G-modules. In particular, we want to study the graded space of invariants in T(V) with respect to the action of G. We give a general method for decomposing the space T(V) into simple modules in terms of words in a Cayley graph of the group G. To apply the method to a particular group, we require a homomorphism from a subalgebra of the group algebra into the character algebra. In the case of G as the symmetric group, we give an example of this homomorphism from the descent algebra. When G is the dihedral group, we have a realization of the character algebra as a subalgebra of the group algebra. In those two cases, we have an interpretation for the graded dimensions of the invariant space in term of those words.
Some polynomials $P$ with rational coefficients give rise to well defined maps between cyclic groups, $\Z_q\longrightarrow\Z_r$, $x+q\Z\longmapsto P(x)+r\Z$. More generally, there are polynomials in several variables with tuples of rational numbers as coefficients that induce maps between commutative groups. We characterize the polynomials with this property, and classify all maps between two given finite commutative groups that arise in this way. We also provide interpolation formulas and a Taylor-type theorem for the calculation of polynomials that describe given maps.
Let $W^c(A_n)$ be the set of fully commutative elements of the Coxeter group $W(A_n)$. Let $$ a_n(q)= \sum_{w \in W^c(A_n)} q^{l(w)} . $$ We compute $a_n(q)$.
For a non-commutative ring R, we consider factorizations of polynomials in R[t] where t is a central variable. A pseudo-root of a polynomial p(t) is an element x in R, for which there exist polynomials q(t) and s(t) such that p(t)=q(t)(t-x)s(t). We investigate the rational relationships that hold among the pseudo-roots of p(t) by using the diamond operations for cover graphs of modular lattices.
A commutative algebra on degenerate CP^1 and Macdonald polynomials
Generalised polynomials are maps constructed by applying the floor function, addition, and multiplication to polynomials. Despite superficial similarity, generalised polynomials exhibit many phenomena which are impossible for polynomials. In particular, there exist generalised polynomial sequences which take only finitely many values without being periodic; examples of such sequences include the Sturmian words, as well as more complicated sequences like $[ 2\{ πn^2 + \sqrt{2}n[\sqrt{3}n] \}]$. The purpose of this paper is to investigate letter-to-letter codings of finitely-valued generalised p…
We give a constructive proof, to all orders, that each member of the non-commutative potential Korteweg-de Vries hierarchy is a Fredholm Grassmannian flow and is therefore linearisable. Indeed we prove this for any linear combination of fields from this hierarchy. That each member of the hierarchy is linearisable, and integrable in this sense, means that the time evolving solution can be generated from the solution to the corresponding linear dispersion equation in the hierarchy, combined with solving an associated linear Fredholm equation representing the Marchenko equation. Further, we show …
We study two types of dynamical extensions of Lucas sequences and give elliptic solutions for them. The first type concerns a level-dependent (or discrete time-dependent) version involving commuting variables. We show that a nice solution for this system is given by elliptic numbers. The second type involves a non-commutative version of Lucas sequences which defines the non-commutative (or abstract) Fibonacci polynomials introduced by Johann Cigler. If the non-commuting variables are specialized to be elliptic-commuting variables the abstract Fibonacci polynomials become non-commutative ellipt…
