This paper gives an introduction and overview about recent developments on the interaction of the theories of characteristic classes and mixed Hodge theory for singular spaces in the complex algebraic context. It uses M. Saito's deep theory of mixed Hodge modules as a "black box", thinking about them as "constructible or perverse sheaves of Hodge structures", having the same functorial calculus of Grothendieck functors. For the "constant Hodge sheaf", one gets the "motivic characteristic classes" of Brasselet-Schuermann-Yokura, whereas the classes of the "intersection homology Hodge sheaf" were studied by Cappell-Maxim-Shaneson.
There are two versions of these characteristic classes. The K-theoretical classes capture information about the graded pieces of the filtered de Rham complex of the filtered D-module underlying a mixed Hodge module. Application of a suitable Todd class transformation then gives classes in homology. These classes are functorial for proper pushdown and exterior products, together with some other properties one would expect for a "good" theory of characteristic classes for singular spaces. For "admissible variation of mixed Hodge structures" they have an explicit classical description in terms of "logarithmic de Rham complexes". On a point space they correspond to a specialization of the Hodge polynomial of a mixed Hodge structure, which one gets by forgetting the weight filtration.
For a simply connected complex algebraic variey $X$, by the mixed Hodge structures $(W_{\bullet}, F^{\bullet})$ and $(\tilde W_{\bullet}, \tilde F^{\bullet})$ of the homology group $H_{*}(X;\mathbb Q)$ and the homotopy groups $π_{*}(X)\otimes \mathbb Q$ respectively, we have the following mixed Hodge polynomials $$MH_X(t,u,v):= \sum_{k,p,q} \operatorname{dim} \Bigl ( Gr_{F^{\bullet}}^{p} Gr^{W_{\bullet}}_{p+q} H_k (X;\mathbb C) \Bigr) t^{k} u^{-p} v^{-q},$$ $$\quad \, \, MH^π_X(t,u,v):= \sum_{k,p,q} \operatorname{dim} \Bigl (Gr_{\tilde F^{\bullet}}^{p} Gr^{\tilde W_{\bullet}}_{p+q} (π_k(X) \ot…
In previous work, we constructed for a smooth complex variety $X$ and for a linear algebraic group $G$ a mixed Hodge structure on the complete local ring $\widehat{\mathcal{O}}_ρ$ to the moduli space of representations of the fundamental group $π_1(X,x)$ into $G$ at a representation $ρ$ underlying a variation of mixed Hodge structure. We now show that the jump ideals $J_k^i \subset \widehat{\mathcal{O}}_ρ$, defining the locus of representations such the the dimension of the cohomology of $X$ in degree $i$ of the associated local system is greater than $k$, are sub-mixed Hodge structures; this …
To any complex algebraic variety endowed with a morphism to a complex affine torus we associate multivariable cohomological Alexander modules, and define natural mixed Hodge structures on their maximal Artinian submodules. The key ingredients of our construction are Gabber-Loeser's Mellin transformation and Hain-Zucker's work on unipotent variations of mixed Hodge structures. As applications, we prove the quasi-unipotence of monodromy, we obtain upper bounds on the sizes of the Jordan blocks of monodromy, and we explore the change in the Alexander modules after removing fibers of the map. We a…
Motivated by the limit mixed Hodge structure on the Milnor fiber of a hypersurface singularity germ, we construct a natural mixed Hodge structure on the torsion part of the Alexander modules of a smooth connected complex algebraic variety. More precisely, let $U$ be a smooth connected complex algebraic variety and let $f\colon U\to \mathbb{C}^*$ be an algebraic map inducing an epimorphism in fundamental groups. The pullback of the universal cover of $\mathbb{C}^*$ by $f$ gives rise to an infinite cyclic cover $U^f$ of $U$. The action of the deck group $\mathbb{Z}$ on $U^f$ induces a $\mathbb{Q…
For an algebraic vector bundle $E$ over a smooth algebraic variety $X$, a monodromic $D$-module on $E$ is decomposed into a direct sum of some $O$-modules on $X$. We show that the Hodge filtration of a monodromic mixed Hodge module is decomposed with respect to the decomposition of the underlying $D$-module. By using this result, we endow the Fourier-Laplace transform $M^{\wedge}$ of the underlying $D$-module $M$ of a monodromic mixed Hodge module with a mixed Hodge module structure. Moreover, we describe the irregular Hodge filtration on $M^{\wedge}$ concretely and show that it coincides with…
In this article we are interested in morphisms without slope for mixed Hodge modules. We first show the commutativity of iterated nearby cycles and vanishing cycles applied to a mixed Hodge module in the case of a morphism without slope. Then we define the notion "strictly without slope" for a mixed Hodge module and we show the preservation of this condition under the direct image by a proper morphism. As an application we prove the compatibility of the Hodge filtration and Kashiwara-Malgrange filtrations for some pure Hodge modules with support an hypersurface with quasi-ordinary singularitie…
We refine the Morgan's work on mixed Hodge structures on Sullivan's $1$--minimal models by using non-abelian Hodge theory. As an application, we give explicit representatives of real unipotent variations of mixed Hodge structures over compact K"ahler manifolds.
For a smooth algebraic variety $X$, a monodromic $D$-module on $X\times \mathbb{C}$ is decomposed into a direct sum of some $D$-modules on $X$. We show that the Hodge filtration of a mixed Hodge module on $X\times \mathbb{C}$ whose underlying $D$-module is monodromic is also decomposed. Moreover, we show that there is an equivalence of categories between the category of monodromic mixed Hodge modules on $X\times \mathbb{C}$ and the category of ``gluing data''. As an application, we endow the Fourier-Laplace transformation of the underlying $D$-module of a monodromic mixed Hodge module with a m…
This note is inspired by the work of Deligne on the local behavior of Hodge structures at infinity. We study limit mixed Hodge structures of degenerating families of compact hyperkähler manifolds. We show that when the monodromy action on $H^2$ has maximal index of unipotency, the limit mixed Hodge structures on all cohomology groups are of Hodge-Tate type.
The purpose of this article is to investigate the properties of the category of mixed plectic Hodge structures defined by Nekovář and Scholl. We give an equivalent description of mixed plectic Hodge structures in terms of the weight and partial Hodge filtrations. We also construct an explicit complex calculating the extension groups in this category.
For a smooth, projective complex variety, we introduce several mixed Hodge structures associated to higher algebraic cycles. Most notably, we introduce a mixed Hodge structure for a pair of higher cycles which are in the refined normalized complex and intersect properly. In a special case, this mixed Hodge structure is an oriented biextension, and its height agrees with the higher archimedean height pairing introduced in a previous paper by the first two authors. We also compute a non-trivial example of this height given by Bloch-Wigner dilogarithm function. Finally we study the variation of m…
For a linear algebraic group $G$ over $\bf Q$, we consider the period domains $D$ classifying $G$-mixed Hodge structures, and construct the extended period domains $D_{\mathrm{BS}}$, $D_{\mathrm{SL}(2)}$, and $Γ\backslash D_Σ$. In particular, we give toroidal partial compactifications of mixed Mumford--Tate domains.
In this article, we will give the Deligne 1-motives up to isogeny corresponding to the $\mathbb{Q}$-limiting mixed Hodge structures of semi-stable degenerations of curves, by using logarithmic structures and Steenbrink's cohomological mixed Hodge complexes associated to semi-stable degenerations of curves.
We study the monodromies and the limit mixed Hodge structures of families of complete intersection varieties over a punctured disk in the complex plane. For this purpose, we express their motivic nearby fibers in terms of the geometric data of some Newton polyhedra. In particular, the limit mixed Hodge numbers and some part of the Jordan normal forms of the monodromies of such a family will be described very explicitly.
