Current-induced torques are commonly used to manipulate non-collinear magnetization configurations. In this article we discuss current-induced torques present in a certain class of collinear magnetic systems, relating them to current-induced changes in magnetic anisotropy energy. We present a quantitative estimate of their characteristics in uniform strained ferromagnetic (Ga,Mn)As.
We report on a study of the dynamics of a magnetic antivortex in a submicron, asteroid shaped, permalloy ferromagnet using micromagnetic simulations. As with vortex states in disk and square geometries, a gyrotropic mode was found in which a shifted antivortex core orbits about the center of the asteroid. Pulsed magnetic fields were used to generate azimuthal or radial spin wave modes, depending on the field orientation. The degeneracy of low frequency azimuthal mode frequencies is lifted by gyrotropic motion of the antivortex core, and restored by inserting a hole in the center of the particl…

We have uncovered a giant gyrotropic magneto-optical response for doped ferromagnetic manganite La2/3Ca1/3MnO3 around the near room-temperature paramagnetic-to-ferromagnetic transition. At odds with current wisdom, where this response is usually assumed to be fundamentally fixed by the electronic band structure, we point to the presence of small polarons as the driving force for this unexpected phenomenon. We explain the observed properties by the intricate interplay of mobility, Jahn-Teller effect and spin-orbit coupling of small polarons. As magnetic polarons are ubiquitously inherent to man…
The periodic deviations of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic spins from corresponding uniform configurations are shown to be energetically favorable close to a compensated interface of ferromagnetic antiferromagnetic bilayer. The amplitude of the deviations decreases exponentially into the film volumes as a function of a coordinate perpendicular to the interface. The interaction energy is found to be proportional to a square of a scalar product of unit ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic vectors.
Describing the origin of uniaxial magnetic anisotropy (UMA) is generally problematic in systems other than single crystals. We demonstrate an in-plane UMA in amorphous CoFeB films on GaAs(001) which has the expected symmetry of the interface anisotropy in ferromagnetic films on GaAs(001), but strength which is independent of, rather than in inverse proportion to, the film thickness. We show that this volume UMA is consistent with a bond-orientational anisotropy, which propagates the interface-induced UMA through the thickness of the amorphous film. It is explained how, in general, this mechani…
Perpendicular magnetic anisotropy was found to be highly sensitive to the nominal thickness and morphology of laterally heterogeneous CoPd films in the vicinity of the metal insulator transition. We used the effect to tune the anisotropy by the width of lithographically patterned stripes with non-uniform cross-sectional thickness profiles. The phenomenon and the method can be suitable to control the local anisotropy of spintronic logic circuitry elements by their shape and lateral dimensions.
We report the experimental observation of magnetic skyrmion-like states in patterned ferromagnetic nanostructures consisting of perpendicular magnetized Co/Pt multilayer film exchange coupled with Co nanodisks in vortex state. The magnetic force microscopy and micromagnetic simulations show that depending on the magnitude of Co/Pt perpendicular anisotropy in these systems two different modes of skyrmion formation are realized.
In epitaxial (111) oriented Ni$_{80}$Fe$_{20}$/Fe$_{50}$Mn$_{50}$ bilayers, we separate two distinct behaviors: unidirectional anisotropy (exchange bias) in thick Fe$_{50}$Mn$_{50}$, and enhanced coercivity in thin Fe$_{50}$Mn$_{50}$. By measuring the magnetization response to a rotating magnetic field, we quantitatively determine the relevant anisotropies, and demonstrate that the enhanced coercivity is related to the rotatable magnetic anisotropy of Fe$_{50}$Mn$_{50}$. We also demonstrate the consequences of the anisotropy changes with temperature.
We report on the magnetic properties of thoroughly characterized Zn1-xCoxO epitaxial thin films, with low Co concentration, x=0.003-0.005. Magnetic and EPR measurements, combined with crystal field theory, reveal that isolated Co2+ ions in ZnO possess a strong single ion anisotropy which leads to an "easy plane" ferromagnetic state when the ferromagnetic Co-Co interaction is considered. We suggest that the peculiarities of the magnetization process of this state can be viewed as a signature of intrinsic ferromagnetism in ZnO:Co materials.
The influence of uniaxial anisotropy and the dipole interaction on the direction of the magnetization of ultra-thin ferromagnetic films in the ground-state is studied. The ground-state energy can be expressed in terms of anisotropy constants which are calculated in detail as function of the system parameters and the film thickness. In particular non-collinear spin arrangements are taken into account. Conditions for the appearance of a spin reorientation transition are given and analytic results for the width of the canted phase and its shift in applied magnetic fields associated with this tran…
Controlling the magnetic anisotropy of ferromagnetic materials plays a key role in magnetic switching devices and spintronic applications. Examples of spin-orbit torque devices with different magnetic anisotropy geometries (in-plane or out-of-plane directions) have been demonstrated with novel magnetization switching mechanisms for extended device functionalities. Normally, the intrinsic magnetic anisotropy in ferromagnetic materials is unchanged within a fixed direction, and thus, it is difficult to realize multifunctionality devices. Therefore, continuous modulation of magnetic anisotropy in…
The laser-induced precession of magnetization in (Ga,Mn)As samples with different magnetic anisotropy was studied by the time-resolved magneto-optical method. We observed that the dependence of the precession amplitude on the external magnetic field depends strongly on the magnetic anisotropy of (Ga,Mn)As and we explain this phenomenon in terms of competing cubic and uniaxial anisotropies. We also show that the corresponding anisotropy fields can be deduced from the magnetic field dependence of the precession frequency.
A small fraction of phosphorus (up to 10 %) was incorporated in ferromagnetic (Ga,Mn)As epilayers grown on a GaAs substrate. P incorporation allows reducing the epitaxial strain or even change its sign, resulting in strong modifications of the magnetic anisotropy. In particular a reorientation of the easy axis toward the growth direction is observed for high P concentration. It offers an interesting alternative to the metamorphic approach, in particular for magnetization reversal experiments where epitaxial defects stongly affect the domain wall propagation.
A recent experimental study (Phys. Rev. Appl. 9, 024023, 2018) on paramagnetic CeCo$_3$ finds that Magnesium alloying induces a ferromagnetic transition with intrinsic properties large enough for permanent magnet applications. Here we explain these surprising results \textit{via} a first principles study of the electronic structure and magnetism of Magnesium-alloyed CeCo$_3$. We find the origin of this Magnesium-induced ferromagnetic transition to be Stoner physics - the substantial increase in the Fermi-level density-of-states $N(E_F)$ with Mg alloying. Our calculations suggest that both Ce a…
We present high-temperature ferromagnetism and large magnetic anisotropy in heavily Fe-doped n-type ferromagnetic semiconductor (In1-x,Fex)Sb (x = 20 - 35%) thin films grown by low-temperature molecular beam epitaxy. The (In1-x,Fex)Sb thin films with x = 20 - 35% maintain the zinc-blende crystal and band structure with single-phase ferromagnetism. The Curie temperature (TC) of (In1-x,Fex)Sb reaches 390 K at x = 35%, which is significantly higher than room temperature and the highest value so far reported in III-V based ferromagnetic semiconductors. Moreover, large coercive force (HC = 160 Oe) …
We present a theory of magnetic anisotropy in ${\rm III}_{1-x}{\rm Mn}_{x}{\rm V}$ diluted magnetic semiconductors with carrier-induced ferromagnetism. The theory is based on four and six band envelope functions models for the valence band holes and a mean-field treatment of their exchange interactions with ${\rm Mn}^{++}$ ions. We find that easy-axis reorientations can occur as a function of temperature, carrier density $p$, and strain. The magnetic anisotropy in strain-free samples is predicted to have a $p^{5/3}$ hole-density dependence at small $p$, a $p^{-1}$ dependence at large $p$, and …
An alternate method of measuring anisotropy fields in thin film ferromagnets is demonstrated. The method relies on the magnetic susceptibility in a small a.c. magnetic field, measured \txtit{in situ} using the magneto-optic Kerr effect (MOKE), and will be useful in situations where more specialized apparatus are not available, or constraints discourage the use of a large, static magnetic field. The method is demonstrated for Co/W(110) films, where it yields anisotropy fields in agreement with previous studies using more conventional torque magnetometry. The sensitivity of the method is demonst…
Heisenberg Hamiltonian was employed to describe the variation of energy of thick ferromagnetic films with second and fourth order anisotropies. At angle of 1.36 degrees and anisotropies of 1.25, energy is minimum for thick film of sc(001) with 1000 layers. Energy becomes minimum at angle of 1.18 degrees and fourth order anisotropy of 1.15 for thick film of bcc(001) with the same thickness. According to these simulations, these lattices can be easily oriented in some certain directions under the influence of some particular values of anisotropies. Energy varies with second and fourth order anis…
Among the recently widely studied van der Waals layered magnets CrX3 (X=Cl, Br, I), CrCl3 monolayer (ML) is particularly puzzling as it is solely shown by experiments to have an in-plane magnetic easy axis and, furthermore, all of previous first-principles calculation results contradict this. Through systematical first-principles calculations,we unveil that its in-plane shape anisotropy that dominates over its weak perpendicular magnetocrystalline anisotropy is responsible for the in-plane magnetic easy axis of CrCl3 ML. To tune the in-plane ferromagnetism of CrCl3 ML into the desirable perpen…
We show that some metals and alloys (X = Cu, Ag, FeMn, or Cu and Ag combined with each other), sputtered between ferromagnetic Co and superconducting Nb, produce no change in current-perpendicular-to-plane magnetoresistance (CPP-MR) in a carefully designed CPP-spin-valve. In contrast, other metals (Ru or Au) or combinations (Cu or Ag combined with Au, Ru, or FeMn) change the CPP-MR, in some cases even reversing its sign. We ascribe these changes to activation of magnetic scattering anisotropies at a ferromagnetic/superconducting interface, apparently by strong spin-flipping between the Co and …
We investigate the dynamic magnetic response of ferromagnetic flexible NiFe/Ta and FeCuNbSiB/Ta multilayers under external stress. We explore the possibility of handling magnetic anisotropy and dynamic magnetic response of flexible magnetostrictive nanostructures. We quantify the sensitivity of the multilayers under external stress by calculating the ratio $|Δ\textrm{MI}|/|Δ\barσ|$ and show that considerable values can be reached by tuning the magnetic field, frequency, magnetostriction constant, and external stress. The results reveal possibilities of application of flexible magnetostrictive …
Layered van der Waals (vdW) crystals with intrinsic magnetic properties such as high Curie temperature (TC) and large perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) are key to the development and application of spintronic devices. The ferromagnetic vdW metal Fe3-xGeTe2 (FGT) has gained prominence recently due to its high TC (220 K) and strong PMA. Here, we introduce a new metallic vdW ferromagnets, Fe5-xGe2Te2 or FG2T, which was successfully synthesized and fully characterized. FG2T is a metal that orders ferromagnetically with a very sharp transition at 250 K (bulk and single crystal thin flakes) an…
We have constructed an analytic formula to treat the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy energy in ferromagnetic metals with low symmetry, such as C4V and C3V. We find that the anisotropy energy is proportional to a part of the expectation values of the orbital angular momentum and magnetic dipole operator. Although the result is similar to the model proposed by Laan [J. Phys.: Condens. Matter 10, 3239 (1998)], we have derived a concrete expression for the spin-flip virtual excitation process term, which can be dominant in atoms with small magnetic moments and/or small exchange splitting. Pt mon…
The magnetic anisotropy of a FeCuNbSiB (Finemet) film deposited on Kapton has been studied by micro-strip ferromagnetic resonance technique. We have shown that the flexibility of the substrate allows a good transmission of elastic strains generated by a piezoelectric actuator. Following the resonance field angular dependence, we also demonstrate the possibility of controlling the magnetic anisotropy of the film by applying relatively small voltages to the actuator. Moreover, a suitable model taking into account the effective elastic strains measured by digital image correlation and the effecti…
The permeability is calculated for a thin ferromagnetic film with the stripe domain structure and out-of-plane uniaxial magnetic anisotropy. Analytical expressions for the frequency dependence of components of permeability tensor are derived with the use of the Smit-Beljers method, with the thickness of domain walls and the domain wall motion being neglected. The effect of the domain width and the angle between the anisotropy axis and the film plane on the frequency dependence of the permeability is analyzed. General equations relating the static permeability components and the ferromagnetic r…
Ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) study of magnetic anisotropy is presented for thin layers of IV-VI diluted magnetic semiconductor Ge1-xMn xTe with x=0.14 grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) on KCl (001) substrate with a thin PbTe buffer. Analysis of the angular dependence of the FMR resonant field reveals that an easy magnetization axis is located near to the normal to the layer plane and is controlled by two crystal distortions present in these rhombohedral Ge1-xMnxTe layers: the ferroelectric distortion with the relative shift of cation and anion sub-lattices along the [111] crystal directio…
The dynamics of magnetic domain walls along ferromagnetic strips with spatially modulated perpendicular magnetic anisotropy is theoretically studied by means of micromagnetic simulations. Ferromagnetic layers with a periodic sawtooth profile of the anisotropy depict a well-defined set of energy minima where the walls are pinned in the absence of external stimuli, and favor the unidirectional propagation of domain walls. The performance of the current-driven domain wall motion along these ratchet-like systems is compared to the field-driven case. Our study indicates that the current-driven doma…
The recent observation of ferromagnetic order in two-dimensional (2D) materials has initiated a booming interest in the subject of 2D magnetism. In contrast to bulk materials, 2D materials can only exhibit magnetic order in the presence of magnetic anisotropy. In the present work we have used the Computational 2D Materials Database (C2DB) to search for new ferromagnetic 2D materials using the spinwave gap as a simple descriptor that accounts for the role of magnetic anisotropy. In addition to known compounds we find 12 novel insulating materials that exhibit magnetic order at finite temperatur…
We demonstrate that in-plane charge current can effectively control the spin precession resonance in an Al2O3/CoFeB/Ta heterostructure. Brillouin Light Scattering (BLS) was used to detect the ferromagnetic resonance field under microwave excitation of spin waves at fixed frequencies. The current control of spin precession resonance originates from modification of the in-plane uniaxial magnetic anisotropy field H_k, which changes symmetrically with respect to the current direction. Numerical simulation suggests that the anisotropic stress introduced by Joule heating plays an important role in c…
Ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) is used to study magnetic anisotropy of GaMnAs in a series of Ga$_{1 - x}$Mn$_{x}$As/Ga$_{1 - y}$Al$_{y}$As heterostructures modulation-doped by Be. The FMR experiments provide a direct measure of cubic and uniaxial magnetic anisotropy fields, and their dependence on the doping level. It is found that the increase in doping -- in addition to rising the Curie temperature of the Ga$_{1 - x}$Mn$_{x}$As layers -- also leads to a very significant increase of their uniaxial anisotropy field. The FMR measurements further show that the effective $g$-factor of Ga$_{1 - x}$…
A set of thin film Mn$_x$Si$_{1-x}$ alloy samples with different manganese concentration x = 0.44 - 0.63 grown by the pulsed laser deposition (PLD) method onto the Al$_2$O$_3$(0001) substrate was investigated in the temperature range 4 - 300 K using ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) measurements in the wide range of frequencies (f = 7 - 60 GHz) and magnetic fields (H = 0 - 30 kOe). For samples with x = 0.52 - 0.55, FMR data show clear evidence of ferromagnetism with high Curie temperatures T$_\text{C}$ ~ 300 K. These samples demonstrate complex and unusual character of magnetic anisotropy describe…
Magnetic tunnel junction-based molecular spintronics devices (MTJMSDs) are designed by covalently connecting the paramagnetic molecules across two ferromagnets (FM) electrodes of a magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ). MTJMSD provides opportunities to connect FM electrodes of a vast range of anisotropy properties to a variety of molecules of length scale. Our prior studies showed that the paramagnetic molecules can produce strong antiferromagnetic coupling with FM electrodes. The device properties of MTJMSD depend upon various factors such as anisotropy, spin fluctuation, thermal energy, etc. In thi…
We study the spectral characteristics of spin current nano-oscillators based on the Pt/[Co/Ni] magnetic multilayer with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. By varying the applied magnetic field and current, both localized and propagating spin wave modes of the oscillation are achieved. At small fields, we observe an abrupt onset of the modulation sidebands. We use micromagnetic simulations to identify this state as a dynamical magnetic skyrmion stabilized in the active device region by spin current injection, whose current-induced dynamics is accompanied by the gyrotropic motion of the core due…
All the simulations were carried out for sc(001) film with three (N=3) layers. The effect of applied magnetic field and stress induced anisotropy on energy of ultra-thin ferromagnetic films has been investigated using Heisenberg Hamiltonian with second order perturbation. The energy becomes minimums at certain values of angles, applied magnetic field and stress, by indicating that film can be easily oriented in theses certain directions by applying particular applied magnetic field or stress. For example, when applied magnetic field perpendicular to film plane is 3.6, the film can be easily or…
We demonstrate sensitivity of the Mn 3d valence states to strain in the ferromagnetic semiconductors (Ga,Mn)As and (Al,Ga,Mn)As, using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). The spectral shape of the Mn $L_{2,3}$ XMCD is dependent on the orientation of the magnetization, and features with cubic and uniaxial dependence are distinguished. Reversing the strain reverses the sign of the uniaxial anisotropy of the Mn $L_3$ pre-peak which is ascribed to transitions from the Mn 2p core level to p-d hybridized valence band hole states. With increasing carrier localization, the $L_3$ pre-peak intensi…
The realization of long-range magnetic ordering in two-dimensional (2D) systems can potentially revolutionize next-generation information technology. Here, we report the successful fabrication of crystalline Cr3Te4 monolayers with room temperature ferromagnetism. Using molecular beam epitaxy, the growth of 2D Cr3Te4 films with monolayer thickness is demonstrated at low substrate temperatures (~100C), compatible with Si CMOS technology. X-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurements reveal a Curie temperature (Tc) of ~344 K for the Cr3Te4 monolayer with an out-of-plane magnetic easy axis, which…
We report the magnetotransport properties of ferromagnet (FM)/antiferromagnet (AFM) Fe$_2$CrSi/Ru$_2$MnGe epitaxial bilayers using current-in-plane configurations. Above the critical thickness of the Ru$_2$MnGe layer to induce exchange bias, symmetric and asymmetric curves were observed in response to the direction of FM magnetocrystalline anisotropy. Because each magnetoresistance curve showed full and partial AFM rotation, the magnetoresistance curves imply the impact of the Fe$_2$CrSi magnetocrystalline anisotropy to govern the AFM rotation. The maximum magnitude of the angular-dependent re…
Electronic mechanism in the interplay between ferromagnetism and structure stability of $4f$-$3d$ intermetallics in the main phase of rare-earth permanent magnets is investigated from first principles. We present a case study with an archetypical materials family RCo$_5$ (R=Ce, La, Y), which was a part of the earliest rare-earth permanent magnets and from which other representative main-phase compounds can be regarded as a derived type. Comparison with the champion magnet materials family R$_2$T$_{14}$B and recently revisited materials family RT$_{12}$ (T=Co and Fe) points to a direction leadi…
The time and field dependence of the magnetic domain structure at magnetization reversal were investigated by Kerr microscopy in interacting ferromagnetic Co/Pt multilayers with perpendicular anisotropy. Large local inhomogeneous magnetostatic fields favor mirroring domain structures and domain decoration by rings of opposite magnetization. The long range nature of these magnetostatic interactions gives rise to ultra-slow dynamics even in zero applied field, i.e. it affects the long time domain stability. Due to this additionnal interaction field, the magnetization reversal under short magneti…
Exploring magnetic anisotropy in bcc-structured ferromagnetic thin films with three spin layers using the fourth order perturbed Heisenberg Hamiltonian
ZrMnP and HfMnP single crystals are grown by a self-flux growth technique and structural as well as temperature dependent magnetic and transport properties are studied. Both compounds have an orthorhombic crystal structure. ZrMnP and HfMnP are ferromagnetic with Curie temperatures around $370$~K and $320$~K respectively. The spontaneous magnetizations of ZrMnP and HfMnP are determined to be $1.9$~$μ_\textrm{B}$/f.u. and $2.1$~$μ_\textrm{B}$/f.u. respectively at $50$~K. The magnetocaloric effect of ZrMnP in term of entropy change ($ΔS$) is estimated to be $-6.7$ kJm$^{-3}$K$^{-1}$ around $369$~…
We report switching of magnetic anisotropy (MA) from in-plane to perpendicular with increasing the thickness d of a (001)-oriented ferromagnetic-semiconductor (FMS) (Ga0.7,Fe0.3)Sb layer with a high Curie temperature (Tc > 320 K), using ferromagnetic resonance at room temperature. We show that the total MA energy (E) along the [001] direction changes its sign from positive (in-plane) to negative (perpendicular) with increasing d above an effective critical value \mathrm{d}_\mathrm{C}^\mathrm{*}\ ~ 42 nm. We reveal that (Ga,Fe)Sb has two-fold symmetry in the film plane. Meanwhile, in the plane …
We study the tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) effect and magnetocrystalline anisotropy in a series of magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) with $L1_1$-ordered fcc ferromagnetic alloys and MgO barrier along the [111] direction. Considering the (111)-oriented MTJs with different $L1_1$ alloys, we calculate their TMR ratios and magnetocrystalline anisotropies on the basis of the first-principles calculations. The analysis shows that the MTJs with Co-based alloys (CoNi, CoPt, and CoPd) have high TMR ratios over 2000$\%$. These MTJs have energetically favored Co-O interfaces where interfacial antibonding…
Understanding and controlling the interfacial magnetic properties of ferromagnetic thin films are crucial for spintronic device applications. However, using conventional magnetometry, it is difficult to detect them separately from the bulk properties. Here, by utilizing tunneling anisotropic magnetoresistance in a single-barrier heterostructure composed of La0.6Sr0.4MnO3 (LSMO)/ LaAlO3 (LAO)/ Nb-doped SrTiO3 (001), we reveal the presence of a peculiar strong two-fold magnetic anisotropy (MA) along the [110]c direction at the LSMO/LAO interface, which is not observed in bulk LSMO. This MA shows…
Anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) of Cr2Ge2Te6 (CGT), a layered ferromagnetic insulator, is investigated under an applied hydrostatic pressure up to 2 GPa. The easy axis direction of the magnetization is inferred from the AMR saturation feature in the presence and absence of the applied pressure. At zero applied pressure, the easy axis is along the c-direction or perpendicular to the layer. Upon application of a hydrostatic pressure>1 GPa, the uniaxial anisotropy switches to easy-plane anisotropy which drives the equilibrium magnetization from the c-axis to the ab-plane at zero magnetic fiel…
Density functional theory (DFT) calculations of the energy of magnetic anisotropy for diluted ferromagnetic semiconductor GeMnTe were performed using using OpenMX package with fully relativistic pseudopotentials. The influence of hole concentration and magnetic ion neighborhood on magnetic anisotropy energy is presented. Analysis of microscopic mechanism of magnetic anisotropy is provided, in particular the role of spin-orbit coupling, spin polarization and spatial changes of electron density are discussed. The calculations are in accordance with the experimental observation of perpendicular m…
The attainability of modification of the apparent magnetic anisotropy in (III,Mn)V ferromagnetic semiconductors is probed by means of the finite-elements-based modelling. The most representative case of (Ga,Mn)As and its in-plane uniaxial anisotropy is investigated. The hysteresis loops of the continuous films of a ferromagnetic semiconductor as well as films structured with the elliptic antidots are modelled for various eccentricity, orientation, and separation of the anti dots. The effect of anti-dots on the magnetic anisotropy is confirmed but overall is found to be very weak. The subsequen…
The phenomena of exchange anisotropy is well known in terms of static magnetization properties such as enhanced coercivity and magnetization loop shifts. These effects are primarily associated with effective anisotropies introduced into the ferromagnet by exchange coupling with a strongly anisotropic antiferromagnet. These effective anisotropies can be understood as manifestations of a more fundamental exchange induced susceptibility. We show that a consequence of this view is that a class of unusual dynamic effects associated with the exchange susceptibility should also exist. The effects bec…
Micromagnetic small-angle neutron scattering theory is well established for analyzing spin-misalignment scattering data of bulk ferromagnets. Here, this theory is extended to allow for a global uniaxial magnetic anisotropy (texture) of the material, in addition to the already included random zero-average local anisotropy. Macroscopic cross-sections and spin-misalignment response functions are computed analytically for several practically relevant mutual anisotropy and external magnetic field orientations in both parallel and perpendicular scattering geometries for field magnitudes both above a…
We report on the synthesis of ferromagnetic cobalt nanocubes of various sizes using thermal pyrolysis method and the effect of shape anisotropy on the static and dynamic magnetic properties were studied. Shape anisotropy of approximately 10 % was introduced in nanocubes by making nanodiscs using a linear chain amine surfactant during synthesis process. It has been observed that, ferromagnetism persisted above room temperature and a sharp drop in magnetic moment at low temperatures in zero-field cooled magnetization may be associated with the spin disorder due to the effective anisotropy presen…
The large curvature effects on micromagnetic energy of a thin ferromagnetic film with nonlocal dipolar energy are considered. We predict that the dipolar interaction and surface curvature can produce perpendicular anisotropy which can be controlled by engineering a special type of periodic surface shape structure. Similar effects can be achieved by a significant surface roughness in the film. We show that in general the anisotropy can point in an arbitrary direction depending on the surface curvature. We provide simple examples of these periodic surface structures to demonstrate how to enginee…
The magnetic anisotropy of a planar array of Ga$_{x}$Fe$_{4-x}$N nanocrystals (NCs) embedded in a GaN host is studied by ferromagnetic resonance. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy are employed to determine the phase and distribution of the nanocrystals. The magnetic anisotropy is found to be primarily uniaxial with the hard axis normal to the NCs plane and to have a comparably weak in-plane hexagonal symmetry. The origin of the magnetic anisotropy is discussed taking into consideration the morphology of the nanocrystals, the epitaxial relations, strain effects and magnetic…
Cr2Ge2Te6 (CGT), a layered ferromagnetic insulator, has attracted a great deal of interest recently owing to its potential for integration with Dirac materials to realize the quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) and to develop novel spintronics devices. Here, we study the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy energy of single-crystalline CGT and determine that the magnetic easy axis is directed along the c-axis in its ferromagnetic phase. In addition, CGT is an insulator below the Curie temperature. These properties make CGT a potentially promising candidate substrate for integration with topological i…
Phosphorous alloying of GaMnAs thin films has been used for the manipulation of the magnetic anisotropies in ferromagnetic Ga0.93Mn0.07As1-yPy layers. We have determined the anisotropy constants as a function of temperature for phosphorous alloying levels between 0 and 8.8 at % for a Mn doping level of ~ 7at%. We show that it is possible to obtain layers with robust ferromagnetism and either in-plane or out-of plane easy axes with small barriers for magnetization reorientation by phosphorous alloying with y< 6at% or y> 6at%. The critical temperatures are not significantly increased by the P al…
