Micromagnetic small-angle neutron scattering theory is well established for analyzing spin-misalignment scattering data of bulk ferromagnets. Here, this theory is extended to allow for a global uniaxial magnetic anisotropy (texture) of the material, in addition to the already included random zero-average local anisotropy. Macroscopic cross-sections and spin-misalignment response functions are computed analytically for several practically relevant mutual anisotropy and external magnetic field orientations in both parallel and perpendicular scattering geometries for field magnitudes both above and below the rotational saturation. Some of these expressions are tested on published experimental data of magnetic-field-annealed Vitroperm and plastically-deformed Ni, allowing to determine the corresponding global uniaxial anisotropy quality factors.
The field dependence of the thermal switching rate of a ferromagnetic material with uniaxial anisotropy was studied by solving the Fokker-Planck equation. We derived the analytical expression of the thermal switching rate using the mean first-passage time approach, and found that Brown's formula [Phys. Rev. 130, 1677 (1963)] is applicable even in the low barrier limit by replacing the attempt frequency with the proper factor which is expressed by the error function.
We investigate the effect of an applied uniaxial strain on the ferromagnetic instability due to long- range Coulomb interaction between Dirac fermions in graphene. In case of undeformed graphene the ferromagnetic exchange instability occurs at sufficiently strong interaction within the Hartree- Fock approximation. In this work we show that using the same theoretical framework but with an additional applied uniaxial strain, the transition can occur for much weaker interaction, within the range in suspended graphene. We also study the consequence of strain on the formation of localized magnetic …
We demonstrate tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) junctions based on a tri layer system consisting of an epitaxial NiMnSb, aluminum oxide and CoFe tri layer. The junctions show a tunnelling magnetoresistance of Delta R/R of 8.7% at room temperature which increases to 14.7% at 4.2K. The layers show clear separate switching and a small ferromagnetic coupling. A uniaxial in plane anisotropy in the NiMnSb layer leads to different switching characteristics depending on the direction in which the magnetic field is applied, an effect which can be used for sensor applications.
We report the existence of a new regime for domain wall motion in uniaxial and near-uniaxial ferromagnetic nanowires, characterised by applied magnetic fields sufficiently strong that one of the domains becomes unstable. There appears a new stable solution of the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation, describing a nonplanar domain wall moving with constant velocity and precessing with constant frequency. Even in the presence of thermal noise, the new solution can propagate for distances on the order of 500 times the field-free domain wall width before fluctuations in the unstable domain become appr…
NiMnSb is a ferromagnetic half-metal which, because of its rich anisotropy and very low Gilbert damping, is a promising candidate for applications in information technologies. We have investigated the in-plane anisotropy properties of thin, MBE-grown NiMnSb films as a function of their Mn concentration. Using ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) to determine the uniaxial and four-fold anisotropy fields, 2KU/Ms and 2K1/Ms, we find that a small variation in composition is sufficient to change the film from primarily four-fold to primarily uniaxial behavior, allowing for continuous tuning of the anisotr…
The existence of the magnetostatic surface spin waves in ferromagnets, known as Damon-Eshbach mode, was recently demonstrated to originate from the topology of the dipole-dipole interaction. In this work, we study the topological characteristics of magnons in easy-axis antiferromagnets with uniaxial anisotropy. The dipolar spin waves are found to be, driven by the dipole-dipole interaction, in a topological nodal-line semimetal phase, which hosts Damon-Eshbach-type surface modes due to the bulk-edge correspondence. The long wavelength character of dipolar spin waves makes our proposal valid fo…
We investigate, angle dependent, the magnetoresistance (MR) of individual self-assembled ferromagnetic GaAs/(Ga,Mn)As core-shell nanowires at cryogenic temperatures. The shape of the MR traces and the observed strong anisotropies in transport can be ascribed to the interplay of the negative magnetoresistance effect and a strong uniaxial anisotropy with the magnetic easy direction pointing along the wire axis. The magnetoresistance can be well described by a quantitative analysis based on the concept of the effective magnetic field, usually used to describe ferromagnetic resonance phenomena. Th…
We propose that stable two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnets can be made of regular single-layered lattices of single-molecule nanomagnets with enough uniaxial magnetic anisotropy on appropriate substrates by controlling the inter-nanomagnet magnetic interaction. Our Monte Carlo simulated results show that such ideal 2D ferromagnets are thermodynamically stable when the anisotropy is strong enough. If the anisotropy energy equals 80 K, approximately that of the Mn12, the T_c varies from zero to 15 K depending on different inter-nanomagnet coupling constants. Such stable spin systems, experimentall…
The angular momentum vector of a Heisenberg ferromagnet with isotropic exchange interaction is conserved, while under uniaxial crystalline anisotropy the projection of the total spin along the easy axis is a constant of motion. Using Noether's theorem, we prove that these conservation laws persist in the presence of dipole-dipole interactions. However, spin and orbital angular momentum are not conserved separately. We also define the linear momentum of ferromagnetic textures. We illustrate the general principles with special reference to the spin transfer torques and identify the emergence of …
We report on a strain-induced and temperature dependent uniaxial anisotropy in V$_{2}$O$_{3}$/Ni hybrid thin films, manifested through the interfacial strain and sample microstructure, and its consequences on the angular dependent magnetization reversal. X-ray diffraction and reciprocal space maps identify the in-plane crystalline axes of the V$_{2}$O$_{3}$; atomic force and scanning electron microscopy reveal oriented rips in the film microstructure. Quasi-static magnetometry and dynamic ferromagnetic resonance measurements identify a uniaxial magnetic easy axis along the rips. Comparison wit…
Cr2Ge2Te6 (CGT), a layered ferromagnetic insulator, has attracted a great deal of interest recently owing to its potential for integration with Dirac materials to realize the quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) and to develop novel spintronics devices. Here, we study the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy energy of single-crystalline CGT and determine that the magnetic easy axis is directed along the c-axis in its ferromagnetic phase. In addition, CGT is an insulator below the Curie temperature. These properties make CGT a potentially promising candidate substrate for integration with topological i…
We report a numerical implementation of the Landau-Lifshitz-Baryakhtar theory, which dictates that the micromagnetic relaxation term obeys the symmetry of the magnetic crystal, i. e. replacing the single intrinsic damping constant with a tensor of corresponding symmetry. The effect of anisotropic relaxation is studied in thin saturated ferromagnetic disk and ellipse with and without uniaxial magneto-crystalline anisotropy. We investigate the angular dependency of the linewidth of magnonic resonances with respect to the given structure of the relaxation tensor. The simulations suggest that the …
The magnetic anisotropy of a planar array of Ga$_{x}$Fe$_{4-x}$N nanocrystals (NCs) embedded in a GaN host is studied by ferromagnetic resonance. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy are employed to determine the phase and distribution of the nanocrystals. The magnetic anisotropy is found to be primarily uniaxial with the hard axis normal to the NCs plane and to have a comparably weak in-plane hexagonal symmetry. The origin of the magnetic anisotropy is discussed taking into consideration the morphology of the nanocrystals, the epitaxial relations, strain effects and magnetic…
Magnetic skyrmions in chiral-lattice ferromagnets are currently attracting enormous research interest because of their potential applications in spintronic devices. However, they emerge in bulk specimens only in a narrow window of temperature and magnetic field. This limited stability regime is recognized as an obstacle to technical applications. Recent experiments demonstrated that the thermodynamic stability of magnetic skyrmions is enhanced or suppressed by the application of a uniaxial strain depending on its axial direction in bulk chiral-lattice ferromagnets MnSi [Y. Nii et al., Nat. Com…
We analyze the electric current and magnetic field driven domain wall motion in perpendicularly magnetized ultrathin ferromagnetic films in the presence of interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and both out-of-plane and in-plane uniaxial anisotropies. We obtain exact analytical Walker-type solutions in the form of one-dimensional domain walls moving with constant velocity due to both spin-transfer torques and out-of-plane magnetic field. These solutions are embedded into a larger family of propagating solutions found numerically. Within the considered model, we find the dependencies of…
We study the magnetic anisotropy which arises at the interface between a thin film ferromagnet and a 3-d Rashba material. The 3-d Rashba material is characterized by the spin-orbit strength $α$ and the direction of broken bulk inversion symmetry $\hat n$. We find an in-plane uniaxial anisotropy in the $\hat{z}\times\hat{n}$ direction, where $\hat z$ is the interface normal. For realistic values of $α$, the uniaxial anisotropy is of a similar order of magnitude as the bulk magnetocrystalline anisotropy. Evaluating the uniaxial anisotropy for a simplified model in 1-d shows that for small band f…
Achieving robust transport has attracted much attention in both electronic and photonic systems. Time-reversal invariant photonic crystal can be employed to realize backscattering-immune chiral state, but the chiral bandgap is topologically trivial. Here, we designed and fabricated a metacrystal comprising non-resonant meta-atoms sandwiched between two metallic plates and the system exhibits topological phase transition as established by group classification. The nontrivial bandgap was confirmed by experimentally measured transmission spectra, calculated nonzero spin Chern number and Z2 index.…
In cubic noncentrosymmetric ferromagnets uniaxial distortions suppress the helical states and stabilize Skyrmion lattices in a broad range of thermodynamical parameters. Using a phenomenological theory for modulated and localized states in chiral magnets, the equilibrium parameters of the Skyrmion and helical states are derived as functions of the applied magnetic field and induced uniaxial anisotropy. These results show that due to a combined effect of induced uniaxial anisotropy and an applied magnetic field Skyrmion lattices can be formed as thermodynamically stable states in large interval…
We have performed micromagnetic simulations to study the formation of skyrmions in ferromagnetic elements with different shapes having perpendicular anisotropy. The strength of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (D) and uniaxial anisotropy (K) are varied to elucidate the regime in which skyrmion formation can take place. It is found that for a certain combination of D and K skyrmion formation does not happen. Further we also observed that for large D and small K values, finite size effect dominates which in turn hinders formation of typical N'eel (spherical) skyrmions. However the resulting mag…
In an antiferromagnet (AF) with uniaxial anisotropy, spin-up and spin-down magnons coexist and form an intrinsic degree of freedom resembling electrons. When polarized by an adjacent ferromagnet (F), a magnonic pure spin current can be thermally generated in an AF. We explore thermal magnon transport in an insulating F/AF/F trilayer where propagating magnons inside the AF spacer can transfer angular momenta between the two Fs. We find that a sufficiently large temperature gradient can switch the downstream F via magnonic spin-transfer torque if it is initially antiparallel with the upstream F.…
Recent advances in the physics of current-driven antiferromagnetic skyrmions have observed the absence of a Magnus force. We outline the symmetry reasons for this phenomenon, and show that this cancellation will fail in the case of spin polarized currents. Pairing micromagnetic simulations with semiclassical spin wave transport theory, we demonstrate that skyrmions produce a spin-polarized transverse magnon current, and that spin-polarized magnon currents can in turn produce transverse motion of antiferromagnetic skyrmions. We examine qualitative differences in the frequency dependence of the …
We calculate the mesoscopic fluctuations of the magnetic anisotropy of ferromagnetic nanoparticles. A microscopic spin-orbit Hamiltonian considered as a perturbation of the much stronger exchange interaction first yields an explicit expression for the anisotropy tensor. Then, assuming a simple random matrix model for the spin-orbit coupling allows us to describe the fluctuation of such a tensor. In the case of uniaxial anisotropy, we calculate the distribution of the anisotropy constant for a given number of electrons, and its variation upon increasing this number by one. The magnitude of the …
The quantum-classical transitions of the escape rates in a uniaxial spin model relevant to the molecular magnet Mn$_{12}$Ac and a biaxial anisotropic ferromagnetic particle are investigated by applying the periodic instanton method. The effective free energies are expanded around the top of the potential barrier in analogy to Landau theory of phase transitions. We show that the first-order transitions occur below the critical external magnetic field $h_x = 1/4$ for the uniaxial spin model and beyond the critical anisotropy constant ratio $λ= 1/2$ for the biaxial ferromagnetic grains, which are…
Superconducting materials with non-centrosymmetric lattices lacking the space inversion symmetry are known to exhibit a variety of interesting parity-breaking phenomena, including the anomalous Josephson effect. Here we consider a Josephson junction consisting of two non-centrosymmetric superconductors (NCSs) connected by a uniaxial ferromagnet, and demonstrate that it exhibits a direct analog of the Chiral Magnetic Effect observed in Dirac and Weyl semimetals. We propose to use this "Chiral Magnetic Josephson junction" (CMJ junction) as an element of a qubit with a Hamiltonian tunable by the …
We consider the Casimir interaction between a ferromagnetic and a non-magnetic mirror, and show how the Casimir effect gives rise to a magnetic anisotropy in the ferromagnetic layer. The anisotropy is out-of-plane if the non-magnetic plate is optically isotropic. If the non-magnetic plate shows a uniaxial optical anisotropy (with optical axis in the plate plane), we find an in-plane magnetic anisotropy. In both cases, the energetically most favorable magnetization orientation is given by the competition between polar, longitudinal and transverse contributions to the magneto-optical Kerr effect…
We consider the Landau-Lifshitz equation for the spin torque oscillator - a uniaxial ferromagnet in an external magnetic field with polarised spin current driven through it. In the absence of the Gilbert damping, the equation turns out to be PT-symmetric. We interpret the PT-symmetry as a balance between gain and loss - and identify the gaining and losing modes. In the vicinity of the bifurcation point of a uniform static state of magnetisation, the PT-symmetric Landau-Lifshitz equation with a small dissipative perturbation reduces to a nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a quadratic nonlinear…
