The existence of the magnetostatic surface spin waves in ferromagnets, known as Damon-Eshbach mode, was recently demonstrated to originate from the topology of the dipole-dipole interaction. In this work, we study the topological characteristics of magnons in easy-axis antiferromagnets with uniaxial anisotropy. The dipolar spin waves are found to be, driven by the dipole-dipole interaction, in a topological nodal-line semimetal phase, which hosts Damon-Eshbach-type surface modes due to the bulk-edge correspondence. The long wavelength character of dipolar spin waves makes our proposal valid for any natural uniaxial easy-axis antiferromagnet, and thus enriches the candidates of topological magnonic materials. In contrast to the nonreciprocal property in ferromagnetic case, the surface modes with opposite momentum coexist at each surface, but with different chiralities. Such a chirality-momentum or spin-momentum locking, similar to that of electronic surface states in topological insulators, offers the opportunity to design novel chirality-based magnonic devices in antiferromagnets.
Two-dimensional (2D) materials with nodal-loop band crossing have been attracting great research interest. However, it remains a challenge to find 2D nodal loops that are robust against spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and realized in magnetic states. Here, based on first-principles calculations and theoretical analysis, we predict that monolayer MnN is a 2D nodal-loop half metal with fully spin polarized nodal loops. We show that monolayer MnN has a ferromagnetic ground state with out-of-plane magnetization. Its band structure shows half metallicity with three low-energy bands belonging to the same …
We investigate magnetization reversal of two-body uniaxial Stoner particles, by injecting spin-polarized current through a spin-valve structure. The two-body Stoner particles perform synchronized dynamics and can act as an information bit in computer technology. In the presence of magnetic dipole-dipole interaction (DDI) between the two particles, the critical switching current $I_c$ for reversing the two dipoles is analytically obtained and numerically verified in two typical geometric configurations. $I_c$ bifurcates at a critical DDI strength, where $I_c$ can be decreased to about 70% of th…
In search of materials with three-dimensional flat band dispersions, using {\em ab-initio} computations, we investigate how topological phases evolve as a function of hydrostatic pressure and uniaxial strain in two types of superlattices: HgTe/CdTe and HgTe/HgSe. In short-period HgTe/CdTe superlattices, our analysis unveils the presence of isoenergetic nodal lines, which could host strain-induced three-dimensional flat bands at the Fermi level without requiring doping, when fabricated, for instance, as core-shell nanowires. In contrast, HgTe/HgSe short-period superlattices are found to harbor …
We propose a general framework for constructing a large set of nodal-point semimetals by tuning the number of linearly ($d_L$) and (at most) quadratically ($d_Q$) dispersing directions. By virtue of such a unifying scheme, we identify a new perturbative route to access various strongly interacting non-Dirac semimetals with $d_Q>0$. As a demonstrative example, we relate a two dimensional anisotropic semimetal with $d_L=d_Q=1$, describing the topological transition between a Dirac semimetal and a normal insulator, and its three dimensional counterparts with $d_L=1$, $d_Q=2$. We address the quant…
We develop an analytical approach for studying the FMR frequency shift due to dipolar interactions and surface effects in two-dimensional arrays of nanomagnets with (effective) uniaxial anisotropy along the magnetic field. For this we build a general formalism on the basis of perturbation theory that applies to dilute assemblies but which goes beyond the point-dipole approximation as it takes account of the size and shape of the nano-elements, in addition to their separation and spatial arrangement. The contribution to the frequency shift due to the shape and size of the nano-elements has been…
Motivated by recent nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments, we present a microscopic sp3 tight-binding model calculation of the NMR shifts in bulk Bi2Se3, and Bi2Te3. We compute the contact, dipolar, orbital and core polarization contributions to the carrier-density-dependent part of the NMR shifts in Bi209, Te125 and Se77. The spin-orbit coupling and the layered crystal structure result in a contact Knight shift with strong uniaxial anisotropy. Likewise, because of spin-orbit coupling, dipolar interactions make a significant contribution to the isotropic part of the NMR shift. The conta…
The classical spin-flop is the field-driven first-order reorientation transition in easy-axis antiferromagnets. A comprehensive phenomenological theory of easy-axis antiferromagnets displaying spin-flops is developed. It is shown how the hierarchy of magnetic coupling strengths in these antiferromagnets causes a strongly pronounced two-scale character in their magnetic phase structure. In contrast to the major part of the magnetic phase diagram, these antiferromagnets near the spin-flop region are described by an effective model akin to uniaxial ferromagnets. For a consistent theoretical descr…
We investigate the formation of stable one-dimensional Néel walls in a ferromagnetic slab with finite thickness and finite width. Taking into account the dipolar, the exchange and the uniaxial anisotropic crystalline field interactions, we derive an approximative analytical self-consistent expression that gives the wall width in terms of ratios between the three different energy scales of the problem. We also show that, even when the crystalline anisotropy does not favour the formation of domain walls, they can yet be formed due to the dipolar interaction and the finiteness of the system. More…
The dipolar (magnetostatic) interaction dominates the behavior of spin waves in magnetic films in the long-wavelength regime. In an in-plane magnetized film, volume modes exist with a negative group velocity (backward volume magnetostatic spin waves), in addition to the forward surface-localized mode (Damon-Eshbach). Inside the film of finite thickness $L$, the volume modes have a nontrivial spatial dependence, and their two-dimensional dispersion relations $ω(\mathbf{k})$ can be calculated only numerically. We present explicit perturbative expressions for the profiles and frequencies of the v…
Magnetic anisotropy, spin wave (SW) excitation and exchange stiffness constant of amorphous FeTaC ($d$ = 20-200 nm) films were studied as a function of thickness using micro-strip ferromagnetic resonance (MS-FMR) technique. The MS-FMR spectra for in-plane applied magnetic field show the presence of uniform precessional mode ($n$ = 0) along with first perpendicular standing spin wave (PSSW) mode ($n$ = 1) especially for $d$ = 50, 100 and 200 nm films. The angular ($φ_{H}$) dependence of resonance field ($H_{r}$) and magnetic field dependence of resonance frequencies ($f_{r}$) in planar configur…
Weyl semimetals are extraordinary systems where exotic phenomena such as Fermi arcs, pseudo-gauge fields and quantum anomalies arise from topological band degeneracy in crystalline solids for electrons and metamaterials for photons and phonons. On the other hand, higher-order topological insulators unveil intriguing multidimensional topological physics beyond the conventional bulk-edge correspondences. However, it is unclear whether higher-order topology can emerge in Weyl semimetals. Here, we report the experimental discovery of higher-order Weyl semimetals in its phononic analog which exhibi…
