We implement a bottom-up multiscale approach for the modeling of defect localization in $C_{6n^2}H_{6n}$ islands, i.e. graphene quantum dots with a hexagonal symmetry, by means of density functional and semiempirical approaches. Using the \textit{ab initio} calculations as a reference, we recognize the theoretical framework under which semiempirical methods describe adequately the electronic structure of the studied systems and thereon proceed to the calculation of quantum transport within the non-equilibrium Green's function formalism. The computational data reveal an impurity-like behavior of vacancies in these clusters and evidence the role of parameterization even within the same semiempirical context. In terms of conduction, failure to capture the proper chemical aspects in the presence of generic local alterations of the ideal atomic structure results in an improper description of the transport features. As an example, we show wavefunction localization phenomena induced by the presence of vacancies and discuss the importance of their modeling for the conduction characteristics of the studied structures.
Whether or not specific ion effects determine the charge storage properties of aqueous graphene and graphite-based supercapacitors remains a highly debated topic. In this work we present a multiscale quantum mechanics classical molecular dynamics investigation of aqueous mono- and divalent salt electrolytes in contact with fully polarizable charged graphene sheets. By computing both the electrochemical double layer and quantum capacitance we observe a constant electrode specific capacitance with cationic radii and charge. Counterintuitively, we determine that a switch in the cation adsorption …
Electronic properties of quantum dots (QDs) depend sensitively on their parent materials. Therefore, confined electronic states in graphene QDs (GQDs) of monolayer and Bernal-stacked bilayer graphene are quite different. Twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) is distinct from monolayer and Bernal-stacked bilayer graphene because of the new degree of freedom: twist angle. In the past few years, numerous efforts have been made to realize the GQDs of monolayer and Bernal-stacked bilayer graphene and achieved great success. Thus far, however, strategies for realizing GQDs of TBG have been elusive. Here, w…
This work analyzes carrier transport, the relaxation of non-equilibrium charge, and the electronic structure of fluorinated graphene (FG) films with graphene quantum dots (GQDs). The FG films with GQDs were fabricated by means of chemical functionalization in an aqueous solution of hydrofluoric acid. High fluctuations of potential relief inside the FG barriers have been detected in the range of up to 200 mV. A phenomenological expression that describes the dependence of the time of non-equilibrium charge emission from GQDs on quantum confinement levels and film thickness (potential barrier par…
Higher harmonic generation in plane graphene quantum dots initiated by intense coherent radiation is investigated, using dynamical Hartree-Fock mean-field theory. A microscopic theory describing the extreme nonlinear optical response of plane graphene quantum dots is developed. The closed set of differential equations for the single-particle density matrix at the graphene quantum dots-strong laser field multiphoton interaction is solved numerically. The obtained solutions indicate the significance of the type of edge and lateral size, and bandgap and laser field strength in the high harmonic g…
Berry phase plays an important role in determining many physical properties of quantum systems. However, a Berry phase altering energy spectrum of a quantum system is comparatively rare. Here, we report an unusual tunable valley polarized energy spectra induced by continuously tunable Berry phase in Bernal-stacked bilayer graphene quantum dots. In our experiment, the Berry phase of electron orbital states is continuously tuned from about pi to 2pi by perpendicular magnetic fields. When the Berry phase equals pi or 2pi, the electron states in the two inequivalent valleys are energetically degen…
On the basis of first-principles calculations and the special displacement method, we demonstrate the quantum confinement scaling law of the phonon-induced gap renormalization of graphene quantum dots (GQDs). We employ zigzag-edged GQDs with hydrogen passivation and embedded in hexagonal boron nitride. Our calculations for GQDs in the sub-10 nm region reveal strong quantum confinement of the zero-point renormalization ranging from 20 to 250 meV. To obtain these values we introduce a correction to the Allen-Heine theory of temperature-dependent energy levels that arises from the phonon-induced …
Graphene and bilayer graphene quantum dots are promising hosts for spin qubits with long coherence times. Although recent technological improvements make it possible to confine single electrons electrostatically in bilayer graphene quantum dots, and their spin and valley texture of the single particle spectrum has been studied in detail, their relaxation dynamics remains still unexplored. Here, we report on transport through a high-frequency gate controlled single-electron bilayer graphene quantum dot. By transient current spectroscopy of single-electron spin states, we extract a lower bound o…
Within the Landauer transport formalism we demonstrate that conductance zeroes are possible in bipartite systems at half-filling when leads are contacted to different sublattice sites. In particular, we investigate the application of this theory to graphene quantum dots with leads in the armchair configuration. The obtained conductance cancellation is robust in the presence of any single-site impurity.
This work investigates the electronic properties of the energy spectrum of a hybrid system composed of (i) a circular quantum dot of monolayer graphene surrounded by an infinite sheet of AA-stacked bilayer graphene and (ii) a circular quantum dot of AA-stacked graphene bilayer surrounded by infinite monolayer graphene. We establish analytical findings for the related energy levels and wave functions using the continuum model and the zigzag boundary conditions at the graphene monolayer-bilayer interface. We investigate the effects of perpendicular magnetic, dot radius, and electrical fields on …
Newly synthesized nanostructures of graphene appear as a promising breeding ground for new technology. Therefore, it is important to identify the role played by the boundary conditions in their electronic features. In this contribution we use the non-equilibrium Green's function method coupled to tight-binding theory to calculate and compare the current patterns of hexagonal graphene quantum dots, with contacts placed at different edge locations. Our results reveal the formation of current vortices when the symmetry of the contact geometry is in conflict with the symmetries of the quantum dot.…
