We introduce the o-minimal LS-category of definable sets in o-minimal expansions of ordered fields and we establish a relation with the semialgebraic and the classical one. We also study the o-minimal LS-category of definable groups. Along the way, we show that two definably connected definably compact definable groups G and H are definable homotopy equivalent if and only if L(G) and L(H) are homotopy equivalent, where L is the functor which associates to each definable group its corresponding Lie group via Pillay's conjecture.
We give a necessary and sufficient condition for a one-dimensional regular and Hausdorff topological space definable in a definably complete uniformly locally o-minimal structure of the second kind having definable bounded multiplication being affine.
An argument of A.Borel shows that every compact connected Lie group is homeomorphic to the Cartesian product of its derived subgroup and a torus. We prove a parallel result for definably compact definably connected groups definable in an o-minimal expansion of a real closed field. As opposed to the Lie case, however, we provide an example showing that the derived subgroup may not have a definable semidirect complement.
We completely characterize definable linear orders in o-minimal structures expanding groups. For example, let (P,<_p) be a linear order definable in the real field R. Then (P,<_p) embeds definably in (R^{n+1},<_l), where <_l is the lexicographic order and n is the o-minimal dimension of P. This improves a result of Onshuus and Steinhorn in the o-minimal group context.
We first show that the projection image of a discrete definable set is again discrete for an arbitrary definably complete locally o-minimal structure. This fact together with the results in a previous paper implies tame dimension theory and decomposition theorem into good-shaped definable subsets called quasi-special submanifolds. Using this fact, in the latter part of this paper, we investigate definably complete locally o-minimal expansions of ordered groups when the restriction of multiplication to an arbitrary bounded open box is definable. Similarly to o-minimal expansions of ordered fiel…
In this paper we work in o-minimal structures with definable Skolem functions and show that a continuous definable map between Hausdorff locally definably compact definable spaces is definably proper if and only if it is proper morphism in the category of definable spaces. We give several other characterizations of definably proper including one involving the existence of limits of definable types. We also prove the basic properties of definably proper maps and the invariance of definably proper in elementary extensions and o-minimal expansions.
We consider definably complete and Baire expansions of ordered fields: every definable subset of the domain of the structure has a supremum and the domain can not be written as the union of a definable increasing family of nowhere dense sets. Every expansion of the real field is definably complete and Baire. So is every o-minimal expansion of a field. However, unlike the o-minimal case, the structures considered form an elementary class. In this context we prove a version of Kuratowski-Ulam's Theorem and some restricted version of Sard's Lemma. We use the above results to prove the following v…
Consider a definably complete uniformly locally o-minimal expansion of the second kind of a densely linearly ordered abelian group. Let $f:X \rightarrow R^n$ be a definable map, where $X$ is a definable set and $R$ is the universe of the structure. We demonstrate the inequality $\dim(f(X)) \leq \dim(X)$ in this paper. As a corollary, we get that the set of the points at which $f$ is discontinuous is of dimension smaller than $\dim(X)$. We also show that the structure is defiably Baire in the course of the proof of the inequality.
In this note we show that every definably connected, definably compact abelian definable group in an o-minimal expansion of a real closed field of dimension not 4 is definably homeomorphic to a torus of the same dimension. Moreover, in the semialgebraic case the result holds for all dimensions.
We study definably compact definably connected groups definable in a sufficiently saturated real closed field $R$. We introduce the notion of group-generic point for $\bigvee$-definable groups and show the existence of group-generic points for definably compact groups definable in a sufficiently saturated o-minimal expansion of a real closed field. We use this notion along with some properties of generic sets to prove that for every definably compact definably connected group $G$ definable in $R$ there are a connected $R$-algebraic group $H$, a definable injective map $ϕ$ from a generic defina…
There are strong analogies between groups definable in o-minimal structures and real Lie groups. Nevertheless, unlike the real case, not every definable group has maximal definably compact subgroups. We study definable groups G which are not definably compact showing that they have a unique maximal normal definable torsion-free subgroup N; the quotient G/N always has maximal definably compact subgroups, and for every such a K there is a maximal definable torsion-free subgroup H such that G/N can be decomposed as G/N = KH, and the intersection between K and H is trivial. Thus G is definably hom…
We investigate continuous functions definable in a definably complete uniformly locally o-minimal expansion of the second kind of a densely linearly ordered abelian group (DCULOAS structure). We prove a variant of the Arzela-Ascoli theorem for uniformly continuous definable functions and the following assertion: Consider the parameterized function $f:C \times P \rightarrow M$ which is equi-continuous with respect to $P$. The projection image of the set at which $f$ is discontinuous to the parameter space $P$ is of dimension smaller than $\dim P$ when $C$ is closed and bounded. In addition, we …
We continue the analysis of definably compact groups definable in a real closed field $\mathcal{R}$. In [3], we proved that for every definably compact definably connected semialgebraic group $G$ over $\mathcal{R}$ there are a connected $R$-algebraic group $H$, a definable injective map $ϕ$ from a generic definable neighborhood of the identity of $G$ into the group $H\left(R\right)$ of $R$-points of $H$ such that $ϕ$ acts as a group homomorphism inside its domain. The above result and our study of locally definable covering homomorphisms for locally definable groups combine to prove that if su…
Let N be an o-minimal expansion of a real closed field. We develop cohomology theory for the category of N-definable manifolds and N-definable maps, and use this to solve the Peterzil-Steinhorn problem on the existence of torsion points on N-definably compact N-definable abelian groups. We compute the cohomology rings of N-definably compact N-definable groups, and we prove an o-minimal analog of the Poincare duality theorem, the Alexander dualti theorem, the Lefschetz duality theorem and the Lefschetz fixed point theorem.
It is known that a definably compact group G is an extension of a compact Lie group L by a divisible torsion-free normal subgroup. We show that the o-minimal higher homotopy groups of G are isomorphic to the corresponding higher homotopy groups of L. As a consequence, we obtain that all abelian definably compact groups of a given dimension are definably homotopy equivalent, and that their universal cover are contractible.
Let ${\mathbb M}$ be an arbitrary o-minimal structure. Let $G$ be a definably compact definably connected abelian definable group of dimension $n$. Here we compute the new the intrinsic o-minimal fundamental group of $G;$ for each $k>0$, the $k$-torsion subgroups of $G;$ the o-minimal cohomology algebra over ${\mathbb Q}$ of $G.$ As a corollary we obtain a new uniform proof of Pillay's conjecture, an o-minimal analogue of Hilbert's fifth problem, relating definably compact groups to compact real Lie groups, extending the proof already known in o-minimal expansions of ordered fields.
We study definably amenable groups in NIP theories, and answer a question of Newelski (and also of Chernikov-Simon), by giving an example in the o-minimal context where weak generic types do not coincide with almost periodic types, equivalently where the union of the minimal subflows of suitable type spaces is not closed. We give other positive results in this o-minimal context.
We study the topology of metric spaces which are definable in o-minimal expansions of ordered fields. We show that a definable metric space either contains an infinite definable discrete set or is definably homeomorphic to a definable set equipped with its euclidean topology. This implies that a separable metric space which is definable in an o-minimal expansion of the real field is definably homeomorphic to a definable set equipped with its euclidean topology. We show that almost every point in a definable metric space has a neighborhood which is definably homeomorphic to an open definable su…
Let G be a definably compact group in an o-minimal expansion of a real closed field. We prove that if dim(G X) < dim G for some definable X subset of G then X contains a torsion point of G. Along the way we develop a general theory for so-called G-linear sets, and investigate definable sets which contain abstract subgroups of G.
We prove several structural results on definably compact groups G in o-minimal expansions of real closed fields, such as (i) G is definably an almost direct product of a semisimple group and a commutative group, and (ii) the group (G, .) is elementarily equivalent to (G/G^00, .). We also prove results on the internality of finite covers of G in an o-minimal environment, as well as the full compact domination conjecture. These results depend on key theorems about the interpretability of central and finite extensions of definable groups, in the o-minimal context. These methods and others also yi…
In this paper we work in an arbitrary o-minimal structure with definable Skolem functions and we prove that definably connected, locally definable manifolds are uniformly definably path connected, have an admissible cover by definably simply connected, open definable subsets and, definable paths and definable homotopies on such locally definable manifolds can be lifted to locally definable covering maps. These properties allows us to obtain the main properties of the general o-minimal fundamental group, including: invariance and comparison results; existence of universal locally definable cove…
We consider definable topological spaces of dimension one in o-minimal structures, and state several equivalent conditions for when such a topological space $\left(X,τ\right)$ is definably homeomorphic to an affine definable space (namely, a definable subset of $M^{n}$ with the induced subspace topology). One of the main results says that it is sufficient for $X$ to be regular and decompose into finitely many definably connected components.
We state conditions for which a definable local homomorphism between two locally definable groups $\mathcal{G}$, $\mathcal{G^{\prime}}$ can be uniquely extended when $\mathcal{G}$ is simply connected (Theorem 2.1). As an application of this result we obtain an easy proof of [3, Thm. 9.1] (see Corollary 2.2). We also prove that Theorem 10.2 in [3] also holds for any definably connected definably compact semialgebraic group $G$ not necessarily abelian over a sufficiently saturated real closed field $R$; namely, that the o-minimal universal covering group $\widetilde{G}$ of $G$ is an open locally…
The group configuration in o-minimal structures gives rise, just like in the stable case, to a transitive action of a type-definable group on a partial type. Because $acl=dcl$ the o-minimal proof is significantly simpler than Hrushovski's original argument. Several equivalent versions, which are more suitable to the o-minimal setting, are formulated, in functional language and also in terms of a certain $4$-ary relation. In addition, the following question is considered: Can every definably connected type-definable group be definably embedded into a definable group of the same dimension? Two s…
Given a definably compact group G in a saturated o-minimal structure, there is a canonical homomorphism from G to a compact real Lie group F(G). We establish a similar result for the (o-mininimal) universal cover of a definably compact group. We also show that F(G) determines the definable homotopy type of G. A crucial step is to show that the fundamental group of an open subset of F(G) is isomorphic to the definable fundamental group of its preimage in G. Our results depend on the study of the o-minimal fundamental groupoid of G.
We prove that $\ omega $-categorical dp-minimal groups are nilpotent-by-finite. We also show that in dp-minimal definably amenable groups, f-generic global types are strongly f-generic.
By recent work on some conjectures of Pillay, each definably compact group in a saturated o-minimal structure is an expansion of a compact Lie group by a torsion free normal divisible subgroup, called its infinitesimal subgroup. We show that the infinitesimal subgroup is cohomologically acyclic. This implies that the functorial correspondence between definably compact groups and Lie groups preserves the cohomology.
We give a presentation of various results on zero-groups in o-minimal structures together with some new observations. In particular we prove that if G is a definably connected definably compact group in an o-minimal expansion of a real closed field, then for any maximal definably connected abelian subgroup T of G, G is the union of the conjugates of T. This can be seen as a generalization of the classical theorem that a compact connected Lie group is the union of the conjugates of any of its maximal tori.
We study various notions of "tameness" for definably complete expansions of ordered fields. We mainly study structures with locally o-minimal open core, d-minimal structures, and dense pairs of d-minimal structures.
Peterzil and Steinhorn proved that if a group $G$ definable in an $o$-minimal structure is not definably compact, then $G$ contains a definable torsion-free subgroup of dimension one. We prove here a $p$-adic analogue of the Peterzil-Steinhorn theorem, in the special case of abelian groups. Let $G$ be an abelian group definable in a $p$-adically closed field $M$. If $G$ is not definably compact then there is a definable subgroup $H$ of dimension one which is not definably compact. In a future paper we will generalize this to non-abelian $G$.
We work in the category of locally definable groups in an o-minimal expansion of a field. Eleftheriou and Peterzil conjectured that every definably generated abelian connected group G in this category is a cover of a definable group. We prove that this is the case under a natural convexity assumption inspired by the same authors, which in fact gives a necessary and sufficient condition. The proof is based on the study of the zero-dimensional compatible subgroups of G. Given a locally definable connected group G (not necessarily definably generated), we prove that the n-torsion subgroup of G is…
This paper discusses sufficient conditions for a definably complete densely linearly ordered expansion of an abelian group having the uniformly locally o-minimal open cores of the first/second kind and strongly locally o-minimal open core, respectively.
We prove that a theorem of Pawlucki, showing that Whitney regularity for a subanalytic set with a smooth singular locus of codimension one implies the set is a finite union of differentiable manifolds with boundary, applies to definable sets in polynomially bounded o-minimal structures. We give a refined version of Pawlucki's theorem for arbitrary o-minimal structures, replacing Whitney (b)-regularity by a quantified version, and we prove related results concerning normal cones and continuity of the density. We analyse two counterexamples to the extension of Pawlucki's theorem to definable set…
We give an example of a dense o-minimal structure in which there is a definable quotient that cannot be eliminated, even after naming parameters. Equivalently, there is an interpretable set which cannot be put in parametrically definable bijection with any definable set. This gives a negative answer to a question of Eleftheriou, Peterzil, and Ramakrishnan. Additionally, we show that interpretable sets in dense o-minimal structures admit definable topologies which are "tame" in several ways: (a) they are Hausdorff, (b) every point has a neighborhood which is definably homeomorphic to a definabl…
We study the $p$-adic algebraic groups $G$ from the definable topological-dynamical point of view. We consider the case that $M$ is an arbitrary $p$-adic closed field and $G$ an algebraic group over ${\mathbb Q}_p$ admitting an Iwasawa decompostion $G=KB$, where $K$ is open and definably compact over ${\mathbb Q}_p$, and $B$ is a borel subgroup of $G$ over ${\mathbb Q}_p$. Our main result is an explicit description of the minimal subflow and Ellis Group of the universal definable $G(M)$-flow $S_G(M^{\text{ext}})$. We prove that the Ellis group of $S_G(M^{\text{ext}})$ is isomorphic to the Elli…
We show that an infinite group is definable in any non trivial geometric $C$-minimal structure which is definably maximal and does not have any definable bijection between a bounded interval and an unbounded one in its canonical tree. No kind of linearity is assumed.
We prove that the cohomology groups of a definably compact set over an o-minimal expansion of a group are finitely generated and invariant under elementary extensions and expansions of the language. We also study the cohomology of the intersection of a definable decreas-ing family of definably compact sets, under the additional assumption that the o-minimal structure expands a field.
Let $\mathcal{K}=(K,v,\ldots)$ be a dp-minimal expansion of a non-trivially valued field of characteristic $0$ and $\mathcal{F}$ an infinite field interpretable in $\mathcal{K}$. Assume that $\mathcal{K}$ is one of the following: (i) $V$-minimal, (ii) power bounded $T$-convex, or (iii) $P$-minimal (assuming additionally in (iii) generic differentiability of definable functions). Then $\mathcal{F}$ is definably isomorphic to a finite extension $K$ or, in cases (i) and (ii), its residue field. In particular, every infinite field interpretable in $\mathbb{Q}_p$ is definably isomorphic to a finite…
We work over an o-minimal expansion of a real closed field R. Given a closed simplicial complex K and a finite number of definable subsets of its realization |K| in R we prove that there exists a triangulation (K',f) of |K| compatible with the definable subsets such that K' is a subdivision of K and f is definably homotopic to the identity on |K|.
We work over an o-minimal expansion of a real closed field. The o-minimal homotopy groups of a definable set are defined naturally using definable continuous maps. We prove that any two semialgebraic maps which are definably homotopic are also semialgebraically homotopic. This result together with the study of semialgebraic homotopy done by H. Delfs and M. Knebusch allows us to develop an o-minimal homotopy theory. In particular, we obtain o-minimal versions of the Hurewicz theorems and the Whitehead theorem.
We prove that in an arbitrary o-minimal structure, every interpretable group is definably isomorphic to a definable one. We also prove that every definable group lives in a cartesian product of one-dimensional definable group-intervals (or one-dimensional definable groups). We discuss the general open question of elimination of imaginaries in an o-minimal structure.
We analyze definably compact groups in o-minimal expansions of ordered groups as a combination of semi-linear groups and groups definable in o-minimal expansions of real closed fields. The analysis involves structure theorems about their locally definable covers. As a corollary, we prove the Compact Domination Conjecture in o-minimal expansions of ordered groups.
We prove Zilber's Trichotomy Conjecture for strongly minimal expansions of two-dimensional groups, definable in o-minimal structures: Theorem. Let M be an o-minimal expansion of a real closed field, (G;+) a 2-dimensional group definable in M, and D = (G;+,...) a strongly minimal structure, all of whose atomic relations are definable in M. If D is not locally modular, then an algebraically closed field K is interpretable in D, and the group G, with all its induced D-structure, is definably isomorphic in D to an algebraic K-group with all its induced K-structure.
We prove that an infinite field interpretable in a $p$-adically closed field $K$ is definably isomorphic to a finite extension of $K$. The result remains true in any $P$-minimal field where definable functions are generically differentiable.
By recent work on some conjectures of Pillay, each definably compact group $G$ in a saturated o-minimal expansion of an ordered field has a normal ``infinitesimal subgroup'' $G^{00}$ such that the quotient $G/G^{00}$, equipped with the ``logic topology'', is a compact (real) Lie group. Our first result is that the functor $G\mapsto G/G^{00}$ sends exact sequences of definably compact groups into exacts sequences of Lie groups. We then study the connections between the Lie group $G/G^{00}$ and the o-minimal spectrum $\widetilde G$ of $G$. We prove that $G/G^{00}$ is a topological quotient of $\…
We study the definable topological dynamics $(G(M), S_G(M))$ of a definable group acting on its type space, where $M$ is either an $o$-minimal structure or a $p$-adically closed field, and $G$ a definable amenable group. We focus on the problem raised by Neweslki of whether weakly generic types coincide with almost periodic types, showing that the answer is positive when $G$ has boundedly many global weakly generic types. We also give two "minimal counterexamples" where $G$ has unboundedly many global weakly generic types, extending the main results of "On minimal flows, definably amenable gro…
