We prove that, in general, given a $p$-harmonic map $F:M\to N$ and a convex function $H:N\to\mathbb{R}$, the composition $H\circ F$ is not $p$-subharmonic. By assuming some rotational symmetry on manifolds and functions, we reduce the problem to an ordinary differential inequality. The key of the proof is an asymptotic estimate for the $p$-harmonic map under suitable assumptions on the manifolds.
We introduce a heat flow associated to half-harmonic maps, which have been introduced by Da Lio and Rivière. Those maps exhibit integrability by compensation in one space dimension and are related to harmonic maps with free boundary. We consider a new flow associated to these harmonic maps with free boundary which is actually motivated by a rather unusual heat flow for half-harmonic maps. We construct then weak solutions and prove their partial regularity in space and time via a Ginzburg-Landau approximation. The present paper complements the study initiated by Struwe and Chen-Lin.
$\infty$-Harmonic maps are a generalization of $\infty$-harmonic functions. They can be viewed as the limiting cases of p-harmonic maps as p goes to infinity. In this paper, we give complete classifications of linear and quadratic $\infty$-harmonic maps from and into a sphere, quadratic $\infty$-harmonic maps between Euclidean spaces. We describe all linear and quadratic $\infty$-harmonic maps between Nil and Euclidean spaces, between Sol and Euclidean spaces. We also study holomorphic $\infty$-harmonic maps between complex Euclidean spaces.
We prove a sharp criterion on the decay of the tension of almost harmonic maps from degenerating surfaces that ensures that such maps subconverge to a limiting object that is made up entirely of harmonic maps.
We propose a new notion called \emph{infinity-harmonic maps}between Riemannain manifolds. These are natural generalizations of the well known notion of infinity harmonic functions and are also the limiting case of $p$% -harmonic maps as $p\to \infty $. Infinity harmoncity appears in many familiar contexts. For example, metric projection onto the orbit of an isometric group action from a tubular neighborhood is infinity harmonic. Unfortunately, infinity-harmonicity is not preserved under composition. Those infinity harmonic maps that always preserve infinity harmonicity under pull back are call…
4-harmonic and ES-4-harmonic maps are two generalizations of the well-studied harmonic map equation which are both given by a nonlinear elliptic partial differential equation of order eight. Due to the large number of derivatives it is very difficult to find any difference in the qualitative behavior of these two variational problems. In this article we prove that finite energy solutions of both 4-harmonic and ES-4-harmonic maps from Euclidean space must be trivial. However, the energy that we require to be finite is different for 4-harmonic and ES-4-harmonic maps pointing out a first differen…
Critical points of approximations of the Dirichlet energy à la Sacks-Uhlenbeck are known to converge to harmonic maps in a suitable sense. However, we show that not every harmonic map can be approximated by critical points of such perturbed energies. Indeed, we prove that constant maps and the rotations of $S^2$ are the only critical points of $E_α$ for maps from $S^2$ to $S^2$ whose $α$-energy lies below some threshold. In particular, nontrivial dilations (which are harmonic) cannot arise as strong limits of $α$-harmonic maps.
We consider harmonic maps into pseudo-Riemannian manifolds. We show the removability of isolated singularities for continuous maps, i.e. that any continuous map from an open subset of R^m into a pseudo-Riemannian manifold which is two times continuously differentiable and harmonic everywhere outside an isolated point is actually smooth harmonic everywhere.
In this paper, we give complete classifications of linear $\infty$-harmonic maps between Euclidean and Heisenberg spaces, between Nil and Sol spaces. We also classify all $\infty$-harmonic linear endomorphisms of Sol space and show that there is a subgroup of $\infty$-harmonic linear automorphisms in the group of linear automorphisms of Sol space.
For any $n$-dimensional compact spin Riemannian manifold $M$ with a given spin structure and a spinor bundle $ΣM$, and any compact Riemannian manifold $N$, we show an $ε$-regularity theorem for weakly Dirac-harmonic maps . As a consequence, any weakly Dirac-harmonic map is proven to be smooth when n = 2. A weak convergence theorem for approximate Dirac-harmonic maps is established when $n = 2$. For $n \ge 3$, we introduce the notation of stationary Dirac-harmonic maps and obtain a Liouville theorem for stationary Dirac-harmonic maps in $R^n$. If, additions, $ψ\in W^{1,p}$ for some $p>2n/3$, th…
In 1981, Sacks and Uhlenbeck introduced their famous $α$-energy as a way to approximate the Dirichlet energy and produce harmonic maps from surfaces into Riemannian manifolds. However, the second and third authors together with Malchiodi ([11],[12]) showed that for maps between two-spheres this method does not capture every harmonic map. They established a gap theorem for $α$-harmonic maps of degree zero and also showed that below a certain energy bound $α$-harmonic maps of degree one are rotations. We establish similar results for $\varepsilon$-harmonic maps $u_\varepsilon \colon S^2\rightarr…
On non-Kähler manifolds the notion of harmonic maps is modified to that of Hermitian harmonic maps in order to be compatible with the complex structure. The resulting semilinear elliptic system is {\it not} in divergence form. The case of noncompact complete preimage and target manifolds is considered. We give conditions for existence and uniqueness of Hermitian-harmonic maps and solutions of the corresponding parabolic system, which observe the non-divergence form of the underlying equations. Numerous examples illustrate the theoretical results and the fundamental difference to harmonic maps.
In this note we will fill out the details from the recent work of Fotiadis and Daskaloyannis in arXiv:1903.05420v3, where the harmonic maps described by Y. Shi, L. Tam and T. Y.-H. Wan (in their work Harmonic Maps on Hyperbolic spaces with Singular Boundary Value, Differential Geometry 51(1999), 551-600) are written by the use of Jacobi elliptic functions. We also prove that the harmonic maps described by J. Wang in his work (The Heat Flow and Harmonic Maps between Complete Manifolds, The Gournal of Geometric Analysis, Volume 8, Number 3, 1998, 485-514) can be written by the use of Jacobi elli…
We prove that all harmonic maps from $\mathbb R^2$ to $\mathbb S^2$ with finite energy are nondegenerate. That is, for any harmonic map $u$ from $\mathbb R^2$ to $\mathbb S^2$ of degree $m$ (in $\mathbb Z$), all bounded kernel maps of the linearized operator $L_u$ at $u$ are generated by these harmonic maps near $u$ and hence the real dimension of bounded kernel space of $L_u$ is $4|m|+2$.
For stationary harmonic maps between Riemannian manifolds, we provide a necessary and sufficient condition for the uniform interior and boundary gradient estimates in terms of the total energy of maps. We also show that if analytic target manifolds do not carry any harmonic S^2, then the singular sets of stationary maps are m \leq n - 4 rectifiable. Both of these results follow from a general analysis on the defect measures and energy concentration sets associated with a weakly converging sequence of stationary harmonic maps.
In this paper we consider approximations introduced by Sacks-Uhlenbeck of the harmonic energy for maps from $S^2$ into $S^2$. We continue the analysis in [6] about limits of $α$-harmonic maps with uniformly bounded energy. Using a recent energy identity in [7], we obtain an optimal gap theorem for the $α$-harmonic maps of degree $-1, 0$ or $1$.
We study harmonic maps from degenerating Riemann surfaces with uniformly bounded energy and show the so-called generalized energy identity. We find conditions that are both necessary and sufficient for the compactness in $W^{1,2}$ and $C^{0}$ modulo bubbles of sequences of such maps.
In this article we study various analytic aspects of interpolating sesqui-harmonic maps between Riemannian manifolds where we mostly focus on the case of a spherical target. The latter are critical points of an energy functional that interpolates between the functionals for harmonic and biharmonic maps. In the case of a spherical target we will derive a conservation law and use it to show the smoothness of weak solutions. Moreover, we will obtain several classification results for interpolating sesqui-harmonic maps.
We show the smoothness of weakly Dirac-harmonic maps from a closed spin Riemann surface into stationary Lorentzian manifolds, and obtain a regularity theorem for a class of critical elliptic systems without anti-symmetry structures.
We introduce a functional that couples the nonlinear sigma model with a spinor field: $L=\int_M[|dϕ|^2+(ψ,\Dψ)]$. In two dimensions, it is conformally invariant. The critical points of this functional are called Dirac-harmonic maps. We study some geometric and analytic aspects of such maps, in particular a removable singularity theorem.
We study a functional, whose critical points couple Dirac-harmonic maps from surfaces with a two form. The critical points can be interpreted as coupling the prescribed mean curvature equation to spinor fields. On the other hand, this functional also arises as part of the supersymmetric sigma model in theoretical physics. In two dimensions it is conformally invariant. We call critical points of this functional magnetic Dirac-harmonic maps. We study geometric and analytic properties of magnetic Dirac-harmonic maps including their regularity and the removal of isolated singularities.
We prove existence results for Dirac-harmonic maps using index theoretical tools. They are mainly interesting if the source manifold has dimension 1 or 2 modulo 8. Our solutions are uncoupled in the sense that the underlying map between the source and target manifolds is a harmonic map.
We discuss a method to construct Dirac-harmonic maps developed by J.~Jost, X.~Mo and M.~Zhu in J.~Jost, X.~Mo, M.~Zhu, \emph{Some explicit constructions of Dirac-harmonic maps}, J. Geom. Phys. \textbf{59} (2009), no. 11, 1512--1527.The method uses harmonic spinors and twistor spinors, and mainly applies to Dirac-harmonic maps of codimension $1$ with target spaces of constant sectional curvature. Before the present article, it remained unclear when the conditions of the theorems in J.~Jost, X.~Mo, M.~Zhu, \emph{Some explicit constructions of Dirac-harmonic maps}, J. Geom. Phys. \textbf{59} (2009…
We establish the regularity theory for certain critical elliptic systems with an anti-symmetric structure under inhomogeneous Neumann and Dirichlet boundary constraints. As applications, we prove full regularity and smooth estimates at the free boundary for weakly Dirac-harmonic maps from spin Riemann surfaces. Our methods also lead to the full interior $ε$-regularity and smooth estimates for weakly Dirac-harmonic maps in all dimensions.
It is known that the $L^{2}$-norms of a harmonic function over spheres satisfies some convexity inequality strongly linked to the Almgren's frequency function. We examine the $L^{2}$-norms of harmonic functions over a wide class of evolving hypersurfaces. More precisely, we consider compact level sets of smooth regular functions and obtain a differential inequality for the $L^{2}$-norms of harmonic functions over these hypersurfaces. To illustrate our result, we consider ellipses with constant eccentricity and growing tori in $\mathbf{R}^3.$ Moreover, we give a new proof of the convexity resul…
In this article we introduce a natural extension of the well-studied equation for harmonic maps between Riemannian manifolds by assuming that the target manifold is equipped with a connection that is metric but has non-vanishing torsion. Such connections have already been classified in the work of Cartan. The maps under consideration do not arise as critical points of an energy functional leading to interesting mathematical challenges. We will perform a first mathematical analysis of these maps which we will call harmonic maps with torsion.
We study the Dirichlet problem for harmonic maps between hyperbolic planes, under the assumption that the Euclidean harmonic extension of the boundary map is quasiconformal.
In this paper, we will show the Yau's gradient estimate for harmonic maps into a metric space $(X,d_X)$ with curvature bounded above by a constant $κ$, $κ\geq0$, in the sense of Alexandrov. As a direct application, it gives some Liouville theorems for such harmonic maps. This extends the works of S. Y. Cheng [4] and H. I. Choi [5] to harmonic maps into singular spaces.
Harmonic maps are nonlinear extensions of harmonic functions. They are critical points of natural energy functionals between Riemannian manifolds. Such type of problems appear in Physics, Geometry of Finance and the study of regularity and singularity uses methods from elliptic PDE, calculus of variations and geometric measure theory. In this paper, we present a general review of harmonic maps. It is a survey that aims to cover the main classical known results regarding the harmonic maps. We present results for the regularity, blow-ups and rectifiability for local minimizers, stationary harmon…
We prove the uniqueness of solutions to Dirichlet problem for p-harmonic maps with images in a small geodesic ball of the target manifold. As a consequence, we show that such maps have Hoelder continuous derivatives. This gives an extension of a result by S. Hildebrandt et al concerning harmonic maps.
We investigate variants of a Three Circles type Theorem in the context of \mathcal{Q}-valued functions. We prove some convexity inequalities related to the L^{2} growth function in the \mathcal{Q}-valued settings. Optimality of these inequalities and comparsion to the case of real valued harmonic functions is also discussed.
The purpose of this note is to prove the existence of global weak solutions to the flow associated to integro-differential harmonic maps into spheres and Riemannian homogeneous manifolds.
We study Dirac-harmonic maps from surfaces to manifolds with torsion, which is motivated from the superstring action considered in theoretical physics. We discuss analytic and geometric properties of such maps and outline an existence result for uncoupled solutions.
We introduce n/p-harmonic maps as critical points of E(v) the Lp-Norm of the alpha-laplacian of v, where pointwise v maps Rn into a sphere, and alpha = n/p. This energy combines the non-local behaviour of the fractional harmonic maps introduced by Riviere and the first author with the degenerate arguments of the n-laplacian. In this setting, we will prove Holder continuity.
For the $p$-harmonic function with strictly convex level sets, we find a test function which comes from the combination of the norm of gradient of the $p$-harmonic function and the smallest principal curvature of the level sets of $p$-harmonic function. We prove that this curvature function is convex with respect to the height of the $p$-harmonic function. This test function is an affine function of the height when the $p$-harmonic function is the $p$-Green function on the ball. For the minimal graph, we obtain a similar results.
We prove a quantification result for harmonic maps with free boundary from arbitrary Riemannian surfaces into the unit ball of ${\mathbb R}^{n+1}$ with bounded energy. This generalizes results obtained by Da Lio on the disc.
Motivated from the action functional for bosonic strings with extrinsic curvature term we introduce an action functional for maps between Riemannian manifolds that interpolates between the actions for harmonic and biharmonic maps. Critical points of this functional will be called interpolating sesqui-harmonic maps. In this article we initiate a rigorous mathematical treatment of this functional and study various basic aspects of its critical points.
We consider the initial-value problem for the equivariant Schrödinger maps near a family of harmonic maps. We provide some supplemental arguments for the proof of local well-posedness result by Gustafson, Kang and Tsai in [Duke Math. J. 145(3) 537--583, 2008]. We also prove that the solution near harmonic maps is unique in $C(I;\dot{H}^1(\mathbb{R}^2)\cap\dot{H}^2(\mathbb{R}^2))$ for time interval $I$. In the proof, we give a justification of the derivation of the modified Schrödinger map equation in low regularity settings without smallness of energy.
We consider the Cauchy problem for the Schrödinger maps evolution when the domain is the hyperbolic plane. An interesting feature of this problem compared to the more widely studied case on the Euclidean plane is the existence of a rich new family of finite energy harmonic maps. These are stationary solutions, and thus play an important role in the dynamics of Schrödinger maps. The main result of this article is the asymptotic stability of (some of) such harmonic maps under the Schrödinger maps evolution. More precisely, we prove the nonlinear asymptotic stability of a finite energy equivarian…
This article addresses the regularity issue for stationary or minimizing fractional harmonic maps into spheres of order $s\in(0,1)$ in arbitrary dimensions. It is shown that such fractional harmonic maps are $C^\infty$ away from a small closed singular set. The Hausdorff dimension of the singular set is also estimated in terms of $s\in(0,1)$ and the stationarity/minimality assumption.
We prove that manifold constrained $p(x)$-harmonic maps are $C^{1,β}$-regular outside a set of zero $n$-dimensional Lebesgue's measure, for some $β\in (0,1)$. We also provide an estimate from above of the Hausdorff dimension of the singular set.
We extend the well-known Sacks-Uhlenbeck energy gap result (1981) for harmonic maps from closed Riemann surfaces into closed Riemannian manifolds from the case of maps with small energy (thus near a constant map), to the case of harmonic maps with high absolute energy but small energy relative to a reference harmonic map.
For the Schrödinger flow from $R^2 \times R^+$ to the 2-sphere $S^2$, it is not known if finite energy solutions can blow up in finite time. We study equivariant solutions whose energy is near the energy of the family of equivariant harmonic maps. We prove that such solutions remain close to the harmonic maps until the blow up time (if any), and that they blow up if and only if the length scale of the nearest harmonic map goes to zero.
We introduce (integro-differential) harmonic maps into spheres, which are defined as critical points of the Besov-Slobodeckij energy $\int\limits_Ω\int\limits_Ω \frac{|v(x)-v(y)|^{p_s}}{|x-y|^{n+sp_s}}\ dx\ dy$. For $p_s = 2$ these are the classical fractional harmonic maps first considered by Da Lio and Riviere. For $p_s \neq 2$ this is a new energy which has degenerate, non-local Euler-Lagrange equations. For the critical case, $p_s = n/s$, we show Holder continuity of these maps.
A study of harmonic maps into Lie groups as a generalisation of the study of other well-known integrable systems, particularly the Toda and self-dual Chern Simons theories.
It is proved the following theorem, if $w$ is a quasiconformal harmonic mappings between two Riemann surfaces with smooth boundary and aproximate analytic metric, then $w$ is a quasi-isometry with respect to Euclidean metric.
We derive a lower bound for energies of harmonic maps of convex polyhedra in $ \R^3 $ to the unit sphere $S^2,$ with tangent boundary conditions on the faces. We also establish that $C^\infty$ maps, satisfying tangent boundary conditions, are dense with respect to the Sobolev norm, in the space of continuous tangent maps of finite energy.
