We consider high energy collisions of two shock waves in AdS_5 as a model of ultrarelativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions in the boundary theory. We first calculate the graviton field produced in the collisions in the NLO and NNLO approximations, corresponding to three- and four-graviton exchanges with the shock waves. We then consider the asymmetric limit where the energy density in one shock wave is much higher than in the other one. In the boundary theory this setup corresponds to proton-nucleus collisions, with the nucleus being the denser of the two shock waves and the proton being the less dense one. Employing the eikonal approximation we find the exact high energy analytic solution for the metric in AdS_5 for the asymmetric collision of two delta-function shock waves. The solution resums all-order graviton exchanges with the "nucleus" shock wave and a single-graviton exchange with the "proton" shock wave. Using the holographic renormalization prescription we read off the energy-momentum tensor of the matter produced in proton-nucleus collisions. We show in explicit detail that in the boundary theory the proton is completely stopped by strong-coupling interactions with the nucleus, in agreement with our earlier results. We also apply the eikonal technique to the asymmetric collision of two unphysical delta-prime shock waves, which we introduced in an earlier work as a means of modeling nuclear collisions with weak coupling initial dynamics. We obtain a surprising result that, for delta-prime shock waves, the multiple bulk graviton exchange series giving the leading energy-dependent contribution to the energy-momentum tensor terminates at the order of two graviton exchanges with the nucleus.
Using holography, we study the collision of planar shock waves in strongly coupled N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. This requires the numerical solution of a dual gravitational initial value problem in asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetime.
We find the expectation value of the energy-momentum tensor in the CFT corresponding to a moving black hole in AdS. Boosting the black hole to the speed of light, keeping the total energy fixed, yields a gravitational shock wave in AdS. The analogous procedure on the field theory side leads to ``light cone'' states, i.e., states with energy-momentum tensor localized on the light cone. The correspondence between the gravitational shock wave and these light cone states provides a useful tool for testing causality. We show, in several examples, how the CFT reproduces the causal relations in AdS.
The formation of marginally trapped surfaces in the off-center collision of two shock waves on AdS_D (with D=4,5,6,7 and 8) is studied numerically. We focus on the case when the two waves collide with nonvanishing impact parameter while the sources are located at the same value of the holographic coordinate. In all cases a critical value of the impact parameter is found above which no trapped surface is formed. The numerical results show the existence of a simple scaling relation between the critical impact parameter and the energy of the colliding waves. Using the isometries of AdS_D we relat…
Collisions of asymmetric planar shocks in maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory are studied via their dual gravitational formulation in asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetime. The post-collision hydrodynamic flow is found to be very well described by appropriate means of the results of symmetric shock collisions. This study extends, to asymmetric collisions, previous work of Chesler, Kilbertus, and van der Schee examining the special case of symmetric collisions. Given the universal description of hydrodynamic flow produced by asymmetric planar collisions one can model, quantitatively, n…
We study the collision of two Reissner-Nordström gravitational shock waves in AdS and show that the charge completely prevents the formation of marginally trapped surfaces of the Penrose type with topology S^(D-2), independently of the energy and the value of the impact parameter. In the case of head-on collisions, a numerical analysis shows that no trapped surfaces with topology S^1 \times S^(D-3) form either.
We numerically study the evolution of a boost-invariant N=4 SYM medium using AdS/CFT. We consider a toy model for the collision of gravitational shock waves, finding that the energy density first increases, reaches a maximum and then starts to decrease, matching hydrodynamics for late times. For the initial conditions we consider, the hydrodynamic scale governing the late time behaviour is to very good approximation determined by the area of the black hole horizon at initial times. Our results provide a toy model for the early time evolution of the bulk system in heavy-ion collisions at RHIC a…
We perform a numerical simulation of the evolution of inhomogeneities with transverse profile in a collision of gravitational shockwaves in asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetime. This constitutes a step closer towards an accurate holographic description of the thermalization of a strongly coupled plasma, which can model the dynamics of heavy ion collisions. The results indicate that the considered inhomogeneities typically become hydrodynamical earlier or at the same moment when hydrodynamics applies to the background, even though they decay slowly.
We consider two ultrarelativistic shock waves propagating and colliding in five-dimensional Anti-de-Sitter spacetime. By transforming to Rosen coordinates, we are able to find the form of the metric shortly after the collision. Using holographic renormalization, we calculate the energy-momentum tensor on the boundary of AdS space for early times after the collision. Via the gauge-gravity duality, this gives some insights on bulk dynamics of systems created by high energy scattering in strongly coupled gauge theories. We find that Bjorken boost-invariance is explicitely violated at early times …
We study heavy ion collisions at strong 't Hooft coupling using AdS/CFT correspondence. According to the AdS/CFT dictionary heavy ion collisions correspond to gravitational shock wave collisions in AdS_5. We construct the metric in the forward light cone after the collision perturbatively through expansion of Einstein equations in graviton exchanges. We obtain an analytic expression for the metric including all-order graviton exchanges with one shock wave, while keeping the exchanges with another shock wave at the lowest order. We read off the corresponding energy-momentum tensor of the produc…
We initiate a program to generalize the standard eikonal approximation to compute amplitudes in Anti-de Sitter spacetimes. Inspired by the shock wave derivation of the eikonal amplitude in flat space, we study the two-point function E ~ < O_1 O_1 >_{shock} in the presence of a shock wave in Anti-de Sitter, where O_1 is a scalar primary operator in the dual conformal field theory. At tree level in the gravitational coupling, we relate the shock two-point function E to the discontinuity across a kinematical branch cut of the conformal field theory four-point function A ~ < O_1 O_2 O_1 O_2 >, whe…
A gravitational shock wave is a solution to Einstein equations describing the gravitational field of a massless particle. We obtain such a geometry for a particle moving on a AdS_3 brane embedded in a AdS_4 bulk (the lower dimensional version of the "locally localized gravity" model of Karch and Randall). In order to do this, we use two different techniques. First, we solve directly Einstein equations sourced by a massless particle. Then we boost to the speed of light the AdS_3 brane black hole solution of Emparan et al while sending its mass parameter to zero. Surprisingly, we obtain two diff…
Using gauge/gravity duality, central ultrarelativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions are modelled as collisions of shock waves in five-dimensional asymptotic AdS space. For early times after the collision, it is possible to analytically match the metric from the past to the future light-cone. This allows extraction of the pre-equilibrium energy-momentum tensor of the strongly coupled, large N gauge theory. For central collisions, this allows qualitative statements concerning the build-up of radial flow at mid-rapidity in AA and pA collisions. We find that the early-time radial flow buildup is ide…
We calculate the drag force on a heavy quark hit by a shock wave, thus generalizing the strongly coupled AdS/CFT heavy quark drag calculations to both hot and cold nuclear matter. The derivation employs the trailing string configuration, similar to that used in the literature for a quark moving through a thermal medium, though in the shock metric the string profile is described by a much simpler analytic function. Our expression for the drag depends on the typical transverse momentum scale of the matter in the shock. For a thermal medium this scale becomes proportional to the temperature, maki…
We calculate the far-field stress-energy tensor of a quark gluon plasma due to a heavy-quark meson moving through it, using a semi-classical description in string theory of the meson as a string hanging into anti-de Sitter space. We find that these mesons create a shock wave but no diffusion wake, in contrast to single heavy quarks described via a trailing string, where the diffusion wake is strong. If thermal QCD responds similarly to heavy quarks and heavy quarkonia, the presence or suppression of the diffusion wake constitutes a prediction which can in principle be checked in heavy-ion coll…
This paper discusses possible phenomenological implications for p+A and A+A collisions of the results of recent numerical AdS/CFT calculations examining asymmetric collisions of planar shocks. In view of the extreme Lorentz contraction, we model highly relativistic heavy ion collisions (HICs) as a superposition of collisions between many near-independent transverse "pixels" with differing incident longitudinal momenta. It was found that also for asymmetric collisions the hydrodynamization time is in good approximation a proper time, just like for symmetric collisions, depending on the geometri…
Within the AdS/CFT correspondence, the shockwave metric has been widely used as a gravity dual for a fast moving nucleus. Here we propose a picture for particle production in deep inelastic scattering off a shockwave with the projectile represented by the $\mathcal{R}$-current. By using the method developed in \cite{Avsar:2009xf} to find an explicit expression for the scattered field, we are able to show that the scattered field can be written in terms of time-like and space-like vacuum states where the time-like states are identified with the outgoing particles. To support this picture, we ca…
We consider a simple extension to the previously found gravity solution corresponding to a boost invariant Bjorken plasma, by allowing components that are asymmetric under parity flipping of the spacetime rapidity. Besides the question whether this may have a realization in collisions of different species of projectiles, such as lead-gold collision, our new time dependent gravity background can serve as a test ground for the recently proposed second order conformal viscous hydrodynamics. We find that non-trivial parity-asymmetric effects start to appear at second order in late time expansion, …
We introduce a computational framework to more efficiently calculate the collision of localized shocks in five dimensional asymptotically Anti-de Sitter space. We expand the Einstein equations in transverse gradients and find that our numerical results agree well with exact solutions already at first order in the expansion. Moreover, the Einstein equations at first order in transverse gradients can be decoupled into two sets of differential equations. The bulk fields of one of these sets has only a negligible contribution to boundary observables, such that the computation on each time slice ca…
We estimate the thermalization time in two colliding shock waves holographic model of heavy-ion collisions. For this purpose we model the process by the Vaidya metric with a horizon defined by the trapped surface location. We consider two bottom-up AdS/QCD models that give, within the colliding shock waves approach, the dependence of multiplicity on the energy compatible with RHIC and LHC results. One model is a bottom-up AdS/QCD confining model and the other is related to an anisotropic thermalization. We estimate the thermalization time and show that increasing the confining potential decrea…
The scrambling time and its delay are calculated using holography in an asymptotically AdS black hole solution of the gauged Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton-Axion (EMDA) theory, the dyonic Kerr-Sen-AdS$_4$ black hole, perturbed by rotating and charged shock waves along the equator. The leading term of the scrambling time for a black hole with large entropy is logarithmic in the entropy and hence supports the fast scrambling conjecture for this black hole solution, which implies that the system under consideration is chaotic. We also find that the instantaneous minimal Lyapunov index is bounded by $κ=…
We derive the exact gravitational field of a relativistic particle localized on an $AdS$ 3-brane, with curvature radius $\ell$, in $AdS_5$ bulk with radius $L$. The solution is a gravitational shock wave. We use it to explore the dynamics of locally localized tensor gravitons over a wide range of scales. At distances below $L$ the shock wave looks exactly like the $5D$ $GR$ solution. Beyond $L$ the solution approximates very closely the shock wave in 4D $AdS$ space all the way out to distances $\ell^3/L^2$ along the brane. At distances between $L$ and $\ell$, the effective 4D graviton is a com…
The particles with almost light velocity are able to be sources of the shock-wave gravity (SWG). Then, for ultra-high-energy particles, there exist two-body scatterings such that one particle is scattered from the gravitational background produced by another particle. Since the spacetime of SWG is closely related to a pp-wave solution of AdS-type background, this type of interaction is also interesting in AdS dual gauge theories. From those viewpoints, the scattering of point particles or strings by the SWG were studied. In this paper, we study the case of the bi-local models, which are simple…
We calculate the area of a marginally trapped surface formed by a head-on collision of gravitational shock waves in AdS_D. We use this to obtain a lower bound on the entropy produced after the collision. A comparison to entropy production in heavy ion collisions is included. We also discuss an O(D-2) remnant of conformal symmetry which is present in a class of gravitational shock wave collisions in AdS_D and which might be approximately realized (with D=5) in central heavy-ion collisions.
Asymmetric brane worlds with dS expansion and static double kink topology are obtained from a recently proposed method and their properties are analyzed. These domain walls interpolate between two spacetimes with different cosmological constants. In the dynamic case, the vacua correspond to dS and AdS geometry, unlike the static case where they correspond to AdS background. We show that is possible to confine gravity on such branes. In particular, the double brane world host two different walls, so that the gravity is localized on one of them.
We study the spectrum of an asymmetric warped braneworld model with different AdS curvatures on either side of the brane. In addition to the RS-like modes we find a resonance state. Its mass is proportional to the geometric mean of the two AdS curvature scales, while the difference between them determines the strength of the resonance peak. There is a complementarity between the RS zero-mode and the resonance: making the asymmetry stronger weakens the zero-mode but strengthens the resonance, and vice versa. We calculate numerically the braneworld gravitational potential and discuss the hologra…
We study strange and isospin asymmetric matter in a bottom-up AdS/QCD model. We first consider isospin matter, which has served as a good testing ground for nonperturbative QCD. We calculate the isospin chemical potential dependence of hadronic observables such as the masses and the decay constants of the pseudo-scalar, vector, and axial-vector mesons. We discuss a possibility of the charged pion condensation in the matter within the bottom-up AdS/QCD model. Then, we study the properties of the hadronic observables in strange matter. We calculate the deconfinement temperature in strange and is…
In a recent paper we have analyzed the AdS/CFT duals to shock waves propagating in the N=4 plasma. Here we study further properties of the system. In the gravity description we consider the properties of the dual black holes, showing in particular that they are stationary black holes with expanding horizons. This is possible because the horizon is not compact; in the fluid, this corresponds to the situation when entropy is being produced and carried away to infinity. We also consider shocks in dimensionalities d other than four and find that, for plasmas whose duals are given by asymptotically…
We reanalyze high energy QCD scattering regimes from scattering in cut-off AdS via gravity-gauge dualities (a la Polchinski-Strassler). We look at 't Hooft scattering, Regge behaviour and black hole creation in AdS. Black hole creation in the gravity dual is analyzed via gravitational shockwave collisions. We prove the saturation of the QCD Froissart unitarity bound, corresponding to the creation of black holes of AdS size, as suggested by Giddings.
In this paper, we derived a critical condition for matter equilibration in heavy ion collisions using a holographic approach. A gravitational shock waves with infinite transverse extension is used to model infinite nucleus. We constructed the trapped surface in the collision of two asymmetric planar shock waves with sources at different depth in the bulk AdS and formulated a critical condition for matter equilibration in collision of "nucleus" in the dual gauge theory. We found the critical condition is insensitive to the depth of the source closer to the AdS boundary. To understand the origin…
We calculate small correction terms to gravitational potential near an asymmetric BPS brane embedded in a 5D AdS-Minkowski space in the context of supergravity. The normalizable wave functions of gravity fluctuations around the brane describe only massive modes. We compute such wave functions analytically in the thin wall limit. We estimate the correction to gravitational potential for small and long distances, and show that there is an intermediate range of distances in which we can identify 4D gravity on the brane below a crossover scale. The 4D gravity is metastable and for distances much l…
We study the collision of planar shock waves in AdS$_5$ as a function of shock profile. In the dual field theory the shock waves describe planar sheets of energy whose collision results in the formation of a plasma which behaves hydrodynamically at late times. We find that the post-collision stress tensor near the light cone exhibits transient non-universal behavior which depends on both the shock width and the precise functional form of the shock profile. However, over a large range of shock widths, including those which yield qualitative different behavior near the future light cone, and for…
We construct a model of high energy heavy ion collisions as two ultrarelativistic shock waves colliding in AdS_5. We point out that shock waves corresponding to physical energy-momentum tensors of the nuclei completely stop almost immediately after the collision in AdS_5, which, on the field theory side, corresponds to complete nuclear stopping due to strong coupling effects, likely leading to Landau hydrodynamics. Since in real-life heavy ion collisions the large Bjorken x part of nuclear wave functions continues to move along the light cone trajectories of the incoming nuclei leaving the sma…
We find the DIS structure functions at strong coupling by calculating R-current correlators on a finite-size shock wave using AdS/CFT correspondence. We improve on the existing results in the literature by going beyond the eikonal approximation for the two lowest orders in graviton exchanges. We argue that since the eikonal approximation at strong coupling resums integer powers of 1/x (with x the Bjorken-x variable), the non-eikonal corrections bringing in positive integer powers of x can not be neglected in the small-x limit, as the non-eikonal order-x correction to the (n+1)st term in the ei…
We analyze asymmetric marginal deformations of SU(2)_k and SL(2,R)_k WZW models. These appear in heterotic string backgrounds with non-vanishing Neveu--Schwarz three-forms plus electric or magnetic fields, depending on whether the deformation is elliptic, hyperbolic or parabolic. Asymmetric deformations create new families of exact string vacua. The geometries which are generated in this way, deformed S^3 or AdS_3, include in particular geometric cosets such as S^2, AdS_2 or H_2. Hence, the latter are consistent, exact conformal sigma models, with electric or magnetic backgrounds. We discuss v…
We explore the constraints imposed on higher curvature corrections of the Lovelock type due to causality restrictions in the boundary of asymptotically AdS space-time. In the framework of AdS/CFT, this is related to positivity of the energy constraints that arise in conformal collider physics. We present explicit analytic results that fully address these issues for cubic Lovelock gravity in arbitrary dimensions and give the formal analytic results that comprehend general Lovelock theory. The computations can be performed in two ways, both by considering a thermal setup in a black hole backgrou…
We introduce the impact-parameter representation for conformal field theory correlators of the form A ~ < O_1 O_2 O_1 O_2 >. This representation is appropriate in the eikonal kinematical regime, and approximates the conformal partial-wave decomposition in the limit of large spin and dimension of the exchanged primary. Using recent results on the two-point function < O_1 O_1 >_{shock} in the presence of a shock wave in Anti-de Sitter, and its relation to the discontinuity of the four-point amplitude A across a kinematical branch-cut, we find the high spin and dimension conformal partial- wave d…
We study the trapped surface produced by an off-center collision of light-like, point-sourced shock waves in anti-de Sitter space. We find an analytic expression for the shape of the trapped surface in the limit where the energy of the shock waves is large and the impact parameter is not too large. We use the area of the trapped surface to estimate a lower bound on the entropy produced in the collision. We compare our results to particle multiplicity measurements in heavy-ion collisions as interpreted through the Glauber model. In an attempt to roughly simulate the effects of asymptotic freedo…
We calculate the total cross section for the scattering of a quark--anti-quark dipole on a large nucleus at high energy for a strongly coupled N=4 super Yang-Mills theory using AdS/CFT correspondence. We model the nucleus by a metric of a shock wave in AdS_5. We then calculate the expectation value of the Wilson loop (the dipole) by finding the extrema of the Nambu-Goto action for an open string attached to the quark and antiquark lines of the loop in the background of an AdS_5 shock wave. We find two physically meaningful extremal string configurations. For both solutions we obtain the forwar…
In this article we show how to set up initial states in ${\cal N} =4$ SYM theory that correspond to high energy graviton collisions, leading to black hole formation in $AdS_5\times S^5$. For this purpose, we study states in the gauge theory that are dual to graviton wavepackets localized at the center of $AdS_5$, and carrying large angular momentum along the $S^5$. These states are created by exciting only the s-wave mode of one of the complex adjoint scalars of SYM. For a single graviton, the state is 1/2 BPS and one can show that it is dual to a linearized 1/2 BPS geometry in the bulk. Explo…
In a previous paper, we have analyzed high energy QCD from AdS-CFT and proved the saturation of the Froissart bound (a purely QCD proof of which is still lacking). In this paper we describe the calculation in more physical terms and map it to QCD language. We find a remarkable agreement with the 1952 Heisenberg description of the saturation (pre-QCD!) in terms of shockwave collisions of pion field distributions. It provides a direct map between gauge theory physics and the gravitational physics on the IR brane of the Randall-Sundrum model. Saturation occurs through black hole production on the…
In this paper we refine a conjecture relating the time-dependent size of an Einstein-Rosen bridge to the computational complexity of the of the dual quantum state. Our refinement states that the complexity is proportional to the spatial volume of the ERB. More precisely, up to an ambiguous numerical coefficient, we propose that the complexity is the regularized volume of the largest codimension one surface crossing the bridge, divided by $G_N l_{AdS}$. We test this conjecture against a wide variety of spherically symmetric shock wave geometries in different dimensions. We find detailed agreeme…
We calculate the total cross section for deep inelastic scattering (DIS) on a nucleus at high energy for a strongly coupled N=4 super Yang-Mills theory using AdS/CFT correspondence. In analogy to the small coupling case we argue that at high energy the total DIS cross section is related to the expectation value of the Wilson loop formed by the quark-antiquark dipole. We model the nucleus by a metric of a shock wave in AdS_5. We then calculate the expectation value of the Wilson loop by finding the extrema of the Nambu-Goto action for an open string attached to the quark and antiquark lines of …
We calculate the cross section of an ultra relativistic nucleus scattering on a qq^(bar) pair at large coupling in N=4 SUSY gauge theory. We study the problem in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence. The nucleus is modeled as a gravitational shockwave in an AdS_5 background moving along the light cone. The dipole qq^(bar) is represented by a Wilson loop moving in the opposite direction. Due to the correspondence, calculating the scattering amplitude of the Wilson loop with the nucleus reduces to calculating the extreme value of the Nambu-Goto action for an open string. Its two end points …
Hydrodynamics is known to describe matter created in high energy heavy ion collisions well. Large deposition of energy by passing jets should create not only the sound waves, already discussed in literature, but also the shocks waves of finite amplitude. This paper is an introduction to relativistic shocks, which go through elementary energy and momentum continuity argument, to weak shocks treated in Navier-Stokes approximation, to out-of-equilibrium setting of AdS/CFT. While we have not yet found numerical solution to corresponding Einstein equations, we have found a variational approximation…
The gravitational shock waves have provided crucial insights into entanglement structures of black holes in the AdS/CFT correspondence. Recent progress on the soft hair physics suggests that these developments from holography may also be applicable to geometries beyond negatively curved spacetime. In this work, we derive a remarkably simple thermodynamic relation which relates the gravitational shock wave to a microscopic area deformation. Our treatment is based on the covariant phase space formalism and is applicable to any Killing horizon in generic static spacetime which is governed by arbi…
