We calculate small correction terms to gravitational potential near an asymmetric BPS brane embedded in a 5D AdS-Minkowski space in the context of supergravity. The normalizable wave functions of gravity fluctuations around the brane describe only massive modes. We compute such wave functions analytically in the thin wall limit. We estimate the correction to gravitational potential for small and long distances, and show that there is an intermediate range of distances in which we can identify 4D gravity on the brane below a crossover scale. The 4D gravity is metastable and for distances much larger than the crossover scale the 5D gravity is recovered.
We develop the thermodynamics of black holes in AdS$_4$ and AdS$_7$ near their BPS limit. In each setting we study the two distinct deformations orthogonal to the BPS surface as well as their nontrivial interplay with each other and with BPS properties. Our results illuminate recent microscopic calculations of the BPS entropy. We show that these microscopic computations can be leveraged to also describe the near BPS regime, by generalizing the boundary conditions imposed on states.
We explore the BPS limit of asymptotically flat black hole thermodynamics, drawing analogies with recent studies of black holes in anti-de Sitter space. Although ultimately motivated by supersymmetry and quantum gravity, the BPS limit is classically well-defined for the dyonic Kerr-Newman black holes in pure Einstein-Maxwell theory and various generalizations with additional scalars and gauge fields that admit embedding in $\mathcal{N}=2$ supergravity (for concreteness we consider the STU model). This limit is manifestly different from extremality as it includes a family of rotating Euclidean …
We study N=1 supersymmetric gauge theories coupled with higher derivative chiral models in four dimensions in the off-shell superfield formalism. We solve the equation of motion for the auxiliary fields and find two distinct on-shell structures of the Lagrangian that we call the canonical and non-canonical branches characterized by zero and non-zero auxiliary fields, respectively. We classify BPS states of the models in Minkowski and Euclidean spaces. In Minkowski space, we find Abelian and non-Abelian vortices, vortex-lumps (or gauged lumps with fractional lump charges) as 1/2 BPS states in t…
We study quantum corrections in the gravitational path integral around nearly $1/16$-BPS black holes in asymptotically $AdS_5 \times S^5$ space, dual to heavy states in 4D $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills. The analysis provides a gravitational explanation of why $1/16$-BPS black holes exhibit an exact degeneracy at large $N$ and why all such states have the same charges, confirming the belief that the superconformal index precisely counts the entropy of extremal black holes. We show the presence of a gap of order $N^{-2}$ between the $1/16$-BPS black holes and the lightest near-BPS black holes…
We give evidence that spacelike BPS Wilson loops do not exist in Minkowski spacetime. We show that spacelike Wilson loops in Minkowski spacetime cannot preserve any supersymmetries, in $d = 4$ $\mathcal N = 4$ super Yang-Mills theory, $d = 3$ $\mathcal N = 2$ super Chern-Simons-matter theory, and $d = 3$ $\mathcal N = 6$ Aharony-Bergman-Jafferis-Maldacena theory. We not only show this using infinite straight lines and circles as examples, but also we give proofs for general curves. We attribute this to the conflicts of reality conditions of the spinors. However, spacelike Wilson loops do exist…
Motivated by recent studies of supersymmetric black holes, we revisit the phase diagram of AdS black holes, whether BPS or not, with particular emphasis on the role of rotation. We develop BPS thermodynamics systematically and, in many explicit examples, we study its striking similarities with more familiar AdS black holes, as well as some differences. We highlight an important fugacity that preserves BPS saturation but is not captured by the supersymmetric index.
In this note we show that the entropy of BPS, rotating, electrically charged AdS$_7 \times S^4$ black holes can be obtained by an extremization principle involving a particular combination of anomaly coefficients of the six-dimensional $\mathcal{N} = (2, 0)$ theory. This result extends our previous finding for BPS, rotating AdS$_5 \times S^5$ black holes.
Using the pure spinor formalism for the superstring in an $AdS_5\times S^5$ background, a simple expression is found for half-BPS vertex operators. At large radius, these vertex operators reduce to the usual supergravity vertex operators in a flat background. And at small radius, there is a natural conjecture for generalizing these vertex operators to non-BPS states.
We construct large classes of non-BPS smooth horizonless geometries that are asymptotic to AdS$_3\times$S$^3\times$T$^4$ in type IIB supergravity. These geometries are supported by electromagnetic flux corresponding to D1-D5 charges. We show that Einstein equations for systems with eight commuting Killing vectors decompose into a set of Ernst equations, thereby admitting an integrable structure. This feature, which can a priori be applied to other AdS$_D\times\mathcal{C}$ settings in supergravity, allows us to use solution-generating techniques associated with the Ernst formalism. We explicitl…
It was recently observed that Kerr-AdS metrics with negative mass describe smooth spacetimes that have a region with naked closed time-like curves, bounded by a velocity of light surface. Such spacetimes are sometimes known as time machines. In this paper we study the BPS limit of these metrics, and find that the mass and angular momenta become discretised. The completeness of the spacetime also requires that the time coordinate be periodic, with precisely the same period as that which arises for the global AdS in which the time machine spacetime is immersed. For the case of equal angular mome…
We find the entropy functions of supersymmetric black holes in AdS$_4$ and AdS$_6$ with electric charges and angular momenta. Extremizing these functions, one obtains the entropies and the chemical potentials of known analytic black hole solutions.
Energy minimizing BPS equations and solutions are obtained for a class of models in Maxwell-scalar theory, where an abelian electric charge is immersed in an effective dielectric of a real scalar field. The first order BPS equations are developed using the straightforward on-shell method introduced by Atmaja and Ramadhan. Employment of an auxiliary function of the scalar field allows a scalar potential that displays a tachyonic instability. Consequently, a nontopological scalar soliton is found to form around the charge. Examples and solutions are provided for (1) a point charge or sphere in a…
According to the covariant open superstring description of D-branes in the AdS$_4 \times \mathbf{CP}^3$ background, 1/2-BPS D2-branes are purely instantonic. Based on this and by taking the eleven dimensional viewpoint, we identify the 1/2-BPS instantonic M2-brane configurations in the AdS$_4 \times$ S$^7 / \mathbf{Z}_k$ background, which reduces to the AdS$_4 \times \mathbf{CP}^3$ under the large $k$ limit, and evaluate their action values. We also consider the previously known 1/2-BPS instantonic objects in ten dimensions from the M2-brane viewpoint to compare with our results.
We study the holographic dual string configuration of 1/2 BPS circular Wilson loops in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory by using the global coordinate of AdS. The dual string worldsheet is given by the Poincare disk AdS_2 sitting at a constant global time slice of AdS_5. We also analyze the correlator of two concentric circular Wilson loops from the global AdS perspective and study the phase transition associated with the instability of annulus worldsheet connecting the two Wilson loops.
By using the approach introduced in arXiv:2107.09677 we construct non-BPS solutions of 6D $(1,0)$ supergravity coupled to two tensor multiplets as a perturbation of AdS$_3\times S^3$. These solutions are both regular and asymptotically AdS$_3\times S^3$, so according to the standard holographic framework they must have a dual CFT interpretation as non-supersymmetric heavy operators of the D1-D5 CFT. We provide quantitative evidence that such heavy CFT operators are bound states of a large number of light BPS operators that are mutually non-BPS.
We consider the open superstring action in the AdS$_4 \times \mathbf{CP}^3$ background and investigate the suitable boundary conditions for the open superstring describing the 1/2-BPS D-branes by imposing the $κ$-symmetry of the action. This results in the classification of 1/2-BPS D-branes from covariant open superstring. It is shown that the 1/2-BPS D-brane configurations are restricted considerably by the Kähler structure on $\mathbf{CP}^3$. We just consider D-branes without worldvolume fluxes.
We analyze AdS$_5$ black holes that are nearly supersymmetric. They depart from the BPS limit in two distinct ways: a temperature takes them above extremality and a potential violates a certain constraint. We study the thermodynamics of these deformations and their interplay in detail. We discuss recent microscopic computations of BPS black hole entropy in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM and generalize methods to the nearBPS regime by relaxing constraints imposed by supersymmetry. The computations recover gravitational results from microscopics also for nearBPS black holes.
We study $N=2$ gauged supergravity with $U(1)$ gauge group coupled to $n_v$ vector multiplets and find quite general analytic solutions for quarter-BPS black holes with mass, NUT and dyonic Maxwell charges. The solutions we find have running scalar fields and flow in the IR region to a horizon geometry of the form AdS$_2\times Σ_g$.
We focus on black branes and toroidal black holes in N=2 gauged supergravities that asymptote to AdS_4, and derive formulas for the mass and central charge densities. We derive the corresponding BPS bound from the superalgebra of the asymptotic vacuum and illustrate our procedure with explicit examples of genuine black brane solutions with non-trivial scalars.
The BPS correlators of the symmetric product orbifold $\text{Sym}_N(\mathbb{T}^4)$ are reproduced from the dual worldsheet theory describing strings on $\text{AdS}_3\times {\rm S}^3\times \mathbb{T}^4$ with minimal ($k=1$) NS-NS flux. More specifically, we show that the worldsheet duals of the symmetric orbifold BPS states can be identified with their lift to the covering surface, thereby making the matching of the correlators essentially manifest. We also argue that the argument can be generalised to arbitrary descendants, using suitable DDF operators on the worldsheet.
We show that the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of a class of BPS electrically charged rotating black holes in AdS$_5\times S^5$ can be obtained by a simple extremization principle. We expect that this extremization corresponds to the attractor mechanism for BPS rotating black holes in five-dimensional gauged supergravity, which is still unknown. The expression to be extremized has a suggestive resemblance to anomaly polynomials and the supersymmetric Casimir energy recently studied for $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills.
The BPS spectrum of string theory on AdS$_3\times {\rm S}^3 \times {\rm S}^3 \times {\rm S}^1$ is determined using a world-sheet description in terms of WZW models. It is found that the theory only has BPS states with $j^+ = j^-$ where $j^{\pm}$ refer to the spins of the $\mathfrak{su}(2)$ algebras of the large ${\cal N}=4$ superconformal algebra. We then re-examine the BPS spectrum of the corresponding supergravity and find that, in contradistinction to previous claims in the literature, also in supergravity only the states with $j^+=j^-$ are BPS. This resolves a number of long-standing puzzl…
We complete the study of static BPS, asymptotically AdS$_4$ black holes within N=2 FI-gauged supergravity and where the scalar manifold is a homogeneous very special Kahler manifold. We find the analytic form for the general solution to the BPS equations, the horizon appears as a double root of a particular quartic polynomial whereas in previous work this quartic polynomial further factored into a pair of double roots. A new and distinguishing feature of our solutions is that the phase of the supersymmetry parameter varies throughout the black hole. The general solution has $2n_v$ independent …
We establish a framework for doing second order conformal perturbation theory for the symmetric orbifold Sym$^N(T^4)$ to all orders in $N$. This allows us to compute how 1/4-BPS states of the D1-D5 system on $AdS_3\times S^3\times T^4$ are lifted as we move away from the orbifold point. As an application we confirm a previous observation that in the large $N$ limit not all 1/4-BPS states that can be lifted do get lifted. This provides evidence that the supersymmetric index actually undercounts the number of 1/4-BPS states at a generic point in the moduli space.
Using the general recipe given in arXiv:0804.0009, where all timelike supersymmetric solutions of N=2, D=4 gauged supergravity coupled to abelian vector multiplets were classified, we construct genuine rotating supersymmetric black holes in AdS(4) with nonconstant scalar fields. This is done for the SU(1,1)/U(1) model with prepotential F=-iX^0X^1. In the static case, the black holes are uplifted to eleven dimensions, and generalize the solution found in hep-th/0105250 corresponding to membranes wrapping holomorphic curves in a Calabi-Yau five-fold. The constructed rotating black holes preserve…
Type IIB superstring theory has AdS_3 x S^3 x M_4 (where the manifold M_4 is either K_3 or T^4) solutions which preserve sixteen supersymmetries. In this paper we consider half-BPS solutions which are locally asymptotic to AdS_3 x S^3 x M_4 and preserve eight of the sixteen supersymmetries. We reduce the BPS equations and the Bianchi identity for the self-dual five-form field to a set of four differential equations. The complete local solution can be parameterized in terms of two harmonic and two holomorphic functions and all bosonic fields have explicit expressions in terms of these functions…
We analyze stationary BPS black hole solutions to 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ abelian gauged supergravity. Using an appropriate near horizon ansatz, we construct rotating attractors with magnetic flux realizing a topological twist along the horizon surface, for any theory with a symmetric scalar manifold. An analytic flow to asymptotically locally $AdS_4$ is presented for a subclass of these near horizon geometries, and an explicit new example of supersymmetric $AdS_4$ rotating black hole is discussed in detail. We further note that, upon tuning the gauging to special values, one can obtain solutions w…
We compute four-point functions in the Heavy-Heavy-Light-Light limit involving all possible $\frac{1}{8}$-BPS heavy states whose dual supergravity solutions are explicitly known, avoiding the use of Witten diagrams. This is achieved by using the AdS/CFT dictionary of type IIB supergravity on AdS$_3 \times S^3 \times {\cal M}_4$ that maps supersymmetric heavy operators whose conformal dimension is the order of the central charge to explicit asymptotically AdS supergravity solutions. Using the Ward Identities for the generators of the ${\cal N}=(4,4)$ superconformal $SU(2)$ Kac-Moody algebra, we…

We use the string sigma model action in AdS_5 \times S^5 to reconstruct the open string solution ending on the Wilson loop in S^3\times R parametrized by a geometric angle in S^3 and an angle in flavor space. Under the interchange of the world sheet space and time coordinates and the T-duality transformation with the radial inversion, the static open string configuration associated with the BPS Wilson loop with two equal angle parameters becomes a long open spinning string configuration which is produced by taking the equal limit of two frequencies for the folded spinning closed string with tw…
We test the AdS/CFT correspondence by calculating Wilson loops in N = 4 super Yang-Mills theory on R*S^3 in the planar limit. Our method is based on a novel large-N reduction, which reduces the problem to Monte Carlo calculations in the plane-wave matrix model or the BMN matrix model, which is a 1d gauge theory with 16 supercharges. By using the gauge-fixed momentumspace simulation, we obtain results respecting 16 supersymmetries. We report on the Monte Carlo results for the BPS circular Wilson loop, which reproduce the exact result up to strong coupling. As a future prospect, we calculate a t…
In this paper, we first compute the Killing spinors of $AdS_4\times Q^{1, 1, 1}$ and its certain orbifolds. Based on this, two classes of $M2$-brane solutions are found. The first class of solutions includes $M2$-branes dual to Wilson loops in the fundamental representation as special cases. The second class includes the candidates of the holographic description of vortex loops in the dual field theories.
We have considered the multi-scalar and multi-tachyon fields living on a 3d domain wall embedded in a 5d dimensional Minkowski spacetime. The effective action for such a domain wall can be found by integrating out the normal modes as vibrating modes around the domain wall solution of a truncated 5d supergravity action. The multi-scalar tachyon potential are good enough to modeling assisted inflation scenario with multi-tachyon fields. The tachyon condensation are also briefly addressed.
The BPS equations in M-theory for solutions with 16 residual supersymmetries, $SO(2,2)\times SO(4)\times SO(4)$ symmetry, and $AdS_4 \times S^7$ asymptotics, were reduced in [arXiv:0806.0605] to a linear first order partial differential equation on a Riemann surface with boundary, subject to a non-trivial quadratic constraint. In the present paper, suitable regularity and boundary conditions are imposed for the existence of global solutions. We seek regular solutions with multiple distinct asymptotic $AdS_4 \times S^7$ regions, but find that, remarkably, such solutions invariably reduce to mul…
We consider rotating, electrically charged, supersymmetric AdS black holes in four, five, six and seven dimensions, and provide a derivation of the respective extremization principles stating that the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy is the Legendre transform of a homogeneous function of chemical potentials, subject to a complex constraint. Extending a recently proposed BPS limit, we start from finite temperature and reach extremality following a supersymmetric trajectory in the space of complexified solutions. We show that the entropy function is the supergravity on-shell action in this limit. Chem…
We describe a number of striking features of a class of smooth solitons in gauged and ungauged minimal supergravity in five dimensions. The solitons are globally asymptotically flat or asymptotically AdS without any Kaluza-Klein directions but contain a minimal sphere formed when a cycle pinches off in the interior of the spacetime. The solutions carry a local magnetic charge and many have rather unusual ergosurfaces. Perhaps most strikingly, many of the solitons have more electric charge or, in the asymptotically AdS case, more electric charge and angular momentum than is allowed by the usual…
We study correlation functions of local operator insertions on the 1/2-BPS Wilson line in ${\cal N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory. These correlation functions are constrained by the 1d superconformal symmetry preserved by the 1/2-BPS Wilson line and define a defect CFT$_1$ living on the line. At strong coupling, a set of elementary operator insertions with protected scaling dimensions correspond to fluctuations of the dual fundamental string in AdS$_5 \times S^5$ ending on the line at the boundary and can be thought of as light fields propagating on the AdS$_2$ worldsheet. We use AdS/CFT techniqu…
We study supersymmetric open strings in type IIB $AdS_3 \times S^3 \times S^3 \times S^1$ with mixed R-R and NS-NS fields. We focus on strings ending along a straight line at the boundary of $AdS_3$, which can be interpreted as line operators in a dual CFT$_2$. We study both classical configurations and quadratic fluctuations around them. We find that strings sitting at a fixed point in $S^3 \times S^3 \times S^1$, i.e. satisfying Dirichlet boundary conditions, are 1/2 BPS. We also show that strings sitting at different points of certain submanifolds of $S^3 \times S^3 \times S^1$ can still sh…
