We study $N=2$ gauged supergravity with $U(1)$ gauge group coupled to $n_v$ vector multiplets and find quite general analytic solutions for quarter-BPS black holes with mass, NUT and dyonic Maxwell charges. The solutions we find have running scalar fields and flow in the IR region to a horizon geometry of the form AdS$_2\times Σ_g$.
We study quantum aspects of the target space of the non-linear sigma model which is a low-energy effective theory of the gauged linear sigma model (GLSM). As such, we especially compute the exact sphere partition function of GLSM for KK$5$-branes whose background geometry is a Taub-NUT space, using the supersymmetric localization technique on the Coulomb branch. From the sphere partition function, we distill the world-sheet instanton effects. In particular, we show that concerning the single-centered Taub-NUT space, the instanton contributions exist only if the asymptotic radius of the $S^1$ f…
Using the results of arXiv:0804.0009, where all timelike supersymmetric backgrounds of N=2, D=4 matter-coupled supergravity with Fayet-Iliopoulos gauging were classified, we construct genuine nut-charged BPS black holes in AdS_4 with nonconstant moduli. The calculations are exemplified for the SU(1,1)/U(1) model with prepotential F=-iX^0X^1. The resulting supersymmetric black holes have a hyperbolic horizon and carry two electric, two magnetic and one nut charge, which are however not all independent, but are given in terms of three free parameters. We find that turning on a nut charge lifts t…
Magnetic BPS string solutions preserving quarter of supersymmetry are obtained for all abelian gauged d=5 N=2 supergravity theories coupled to vector supermultiplets. Due to a ``generalised Dirac quantization'' condition satisfied by the minimized magnetic central charge, the string metric takes a universal form for all five dimensional gauged theories.
We study M5 branes on $\mathbb{R}^{1,1} \times$Taub-NUT that we view as a singular fibration. Reducing the M5 branes along the fiber gives 5d SYM. Due to the singularity, this 5d theory has a gauge anomaly and it is not supersymmetric. To cure these problems we add a supersymmetric gauged chiral WZW theory on the 2d submanifold where the circle fiber vanishes. In addition we add a mass term for the five scalar fields located on this submanifold. With all this, we obtain a fully supersymmetric and gauge invariant theory.
We extend the topological Kerr-Newman-aDS solutions by including NUT charge and find generalizations of the Robinson-Bertotti solution to the negative cosmological constant case with different topologies. We show how all these solutions can be obtained as limits of the general Plebanski-Demianski solution. We study the supersymmetry properties of all these solutions in the context of gauged N=2,d=4 supergravity. Generically they preserve at most 1/4 of the total supersymmetry. In the Plebanski-Demianski case, although gauged N=2,d=4 supergravity does not have electric-magnetic duality, we find…
Supersymmetry of five dimensional string solutions is examined in the context of gauged D=5, N=2 supergravity coupled to abelian vector multiplets. We find magnetic black strings preserving one quarter of supersymmetry and approaching the half-supersymmetric product space AdS_3\times H^2 near the event horizon. The solutions thus exhibit the phenomenon of supersymmetry enhancement near the horizon, like in the cases of ungauged supergravity theories, where the near horizon limit is fully supersymmetric. Finally, product space compactifications are studied in detail, and it is shown that only f…
We consider four-dimensional U(1)^4 gauged supergravity, and obtain asymptotically AdS_4, non-extremal, charged, rotating black holes with one non-zero U(1) charge. The thermodynamic quantities are computed. We obtain a generalization that includes a NUT parameter. The general solution has a discrete symmetry involving inversion of the rotation parameter, and has a string frame metric that admits a rank-2 Killing-Stackel tensor.
Using a boundary counterterm prescription motivated by the AdS/CFT conjecture, I evaluate the energy, entropy and angular momentum of the class of Kerr-NUT/bolt-AdS spacetimes. As in the non-rotating case, when the NUT charge is nonzero the entropy is no longer equal to one-quarter of the area due to the presence of the Misner string. When the cosmological constant is also non-zero, the entropy is bounded from above.
We deepen and refine the classification of supersymmetric solutions to N=2, D=4 gauged supergravity obtained in a previous paper. In the case where the Killing vector constructed from the Killing spinor is timelike, it is shown that the nonlinear partial differential equations determining the BPS solutions can be derived from a variational principle. The corresponding action enjoys a solution-generating PSL(2,R) symmetry. In certain subcases the system reduces to different known theories, like two-dimensional dilaton gravity or the dimensionally reduced gravitational Chern-Simons theory. We fi…
We study four-dimensional non-extremal charged rotating black holes in ungauged and gauged supergravity. In the ungauged case, we obtain rotating black holes with four independent charges, as solutions of N=2 supergravity coupled to three abelian vector multiplets. This is done by reducing the theory along the time direction to three dimensions, where it has an O(4,4) global symmetry. Applied to the reduction of the uncharged Kerr metric, O(1,1)^4\subset O(4,4) transformations generate new solutions that correspond, after lifting back to four dimensions, to the introduction of four independent…
We obtain an asymptotically AdS, non-extremal, electrically charged and rotating black hole solution of 4-dimensional U(1)^4 gauged supergravity with 2 non-zero and independent U(1) charges. The thermodynamical quantities are computed. We find BPS solutions that are nakedly singular. The solution is generalized to include a NUT parameter and dyonic gauge fields. The string frame metric has a rank-2 Killing-Stackel tensor and has completely integrable geodesic motion, and the massless Klein-Gordon equation separates for the Einstein frame metric.
We review the classification of supersymmetric solutions to minimal gauged supergravity in four dimensions. After a short introduction to the main features of the theory, we explain how to obtain all its solutions admitting a Killing spinor. Then, we analyze the rich mathematical structure behind them and present the supersymmetric field configurations. Among them, we find supersymmetric black holes, quarter and half BPS traveling waves, kink solutions, and supersymmetric Kundt and Robinson-Trautman solutions. Finally, we generalize the classification to include external sources, and show a pa…
We present new results towards the construction of the most general black hole solutions in four-dimensional Fayet-Iliopoulos gauged supergravities. In these theories black holes can be asymptotically AdS and have arbitrary mass, angular momentum, electric and magnetic charges and NUT charge. Furthermore, a wide range of horizon topologies is allowed (compact and noncompact) and the complex scalar fields have a nontrivial radial and angular profile. We construct a large class of solutions in the simplest single scalar model with prepotential $F = -i X^0 X^1$ and discuss their thermodynamics. M…
We compactify four-dimensional N=1 gauged supergravity theories on a circle including fluxes for shift-symmetric scalars. Four-dimensional Taub-NUT gravitational instantons universally correct the three-dimensional superpotential in the absence of fluxes. In the presence of fluxes these Taub-NUT instanton contributions are no longer gauge-invariant. Invariance can be restored by gauge instantons on top of Taub-NUT instantons. We establish the embedding of this scenario into M-theory. Circle fluxes and gaugings arise from a restricted class of M-theory four-form fluxes on a resolved Calabi-Yau …
We present new supersymmetric domain wall and string solutions of five-dimensional N = 2 gauged supergravity coupled to an arbitrary number of vector multiplets. Using the techniques of very special geometry allows to obtain the most general domain wall preserving half of the supersymmetries. This solution, which describes a renormalization group flow in the dual field theory, is given in terms of Weierstrass elliptic functions. The magnetically charged, one quarter supersymmetric string solutions are shown to be closely related to Liouville theory. We furthermore investigate general product s…
We study classical and quantum dynamics on the Euclidean Taub-NUT geometry coupled to an abelian gauge field with self-dual curvature and show that, even though Taub-NUT has neither bounded orbits nor quantum bound states, the magnetic binding via the gauge field produces both. The conserved Runge-Lenz vector of Taub-NUT dynamics survives, in a modified form, in the gauged model and allows for an essentially algebraic computation of classical trajectories and energies of quantum bound states. We also compute scattering cross sections and find a surprising electric-magnetic duality. Finally, we…
We investigate the thermodynamic behaviour of Lorentzian Dyonic Taub-NUT Black Hole spacetimes. We consider two possibilities in their description: one in which their entropy is interpreted to be one quarter of the horizon area (the horizon entropy), and another in which the Misner string also contributes to the entropy (the Noether charge entropy). We find that there can be as many as three extremal black holes (or as few as zero) depending on the choice of parameters, and that the dependence of the free energy on temperature -- and the resultant phase behaviour -- depends very much on which …
We classify all supersymmetric solutions of minimal gauged supergravity in four dimensions. There are two classes of solutions that are distinguished by the norm of the Killing vector constructed from the Killing spinor. If the Killing vector is timelike, the solutions are determined by the geometry of a two-dimensional base-manifold. When it is lightlike, the most general BPS solution is given by an electrovac AdS travelling wave. This supersymmetric configuration was previously unknown. Generically the solutions preserve one quarter of the supersymmetry. Also in the timelike case we show tha…
The lightlike supersymmetric solutions of N=2, D=4 gauged supergravity coupled to an arbitrary number of abelian vector multiplets are classified using spinorial geometry techniques. The solutions fall into two classes, depending on whether the Killing spinor is constant or not. In both cases, we give explicit examples of supersymmetric backgrounds. Among these BPS solutions, which preserve one quarter of the supersymmetry, there are gravitational waves propagating on domain walls or on bubbles of nothing that asymptote to AdS_4. Furthermore, we obtain the additional constraints obeyed by half…
In this paper we obtain supersymmetric brane-like configurations in the vacuum of N=4 gauged $SU(2)\times SU(2)$ supergravity theory in four spacetime dimensions. Almost all of these vacuum solutions preserve either half or one quarter of the supersymmetry in the theory. We also study the solutions in presence of nontrivial axionic and gauge field backgrounds. In the case of pure gravity with axionic charge the geometry of the spacetime is $AdS_3\times R^1$ with N=1 supersymmetry. An interesting observation is that the domain walls of this theory cannot be given an interpretation of a 2-brane …
We study the properties of an exact multi-membrane solution in seven-dimensional maximal SO(5)-gauged supergravity. Unlike previously known multi-centered solutions, the present one is asymptotically anti-de Sitter. We show that this multi-membrane configuration preserves only a quarter of the supersymmetries. When lifted to eleven dimensions, this solution is interpreted as a set of open membranes ending on self-dual strings on a stack of M5-branes, in the near M5 limit.
We construct supersymmetric black holes with rotation or NUT charge for the $\overline{\mathbb{C}\text{P}}^n$- and the $\text{t}^3$ model of $N=2$, $D=4$ $\text{U}(1)$ FI-gauged supergravity. The solutions preserve 2 real supercharges, which are doubled for their near-horizon geometry. For the $\overline{\mathbb{C}\text{P}}^n$ model we also present a generalization to the nonextremal case, which turns out to be characterized by a Carter-Plebański-type metric, and has $n+3$ independent parameters, corresponding to mass, angular momentum as well as $n+1$ magnetic charges. We discuss the thermody…
We find solutions of the bosonic sector of gauged N=4, D=4 SU(2) $\times$ SU(2) supergravity, which represent dilaton black holes with toroidal or spherical event horizons. The axion is consistently truncated, and the gauge group is broken to U(1) $\times$ U(1). The spherical black holes carry two electric and two magnetic abelian charges, whereas the toroidal holes have vanishing magnetic charges. The spacetime metrics are warped products, and the manifolds turn out to be globally hyperbolic, in contrast to standard gauged supergravity ground states. It is shown that in the toroidal case, the…
We present a purely geometric method for constructing a rank two Killing tensor in a spacetime with a codimension one foliation that lifts the trivial Killing tensors from slices to the entire manifold. The resulting Killing tensor can be nontrivial. A deep connection is found between the existence of such a Killing tensor and the presence of generalized photon surfaces in spacetime with two Killing vector fields. This technique generates Killing tensors in a purely algebraic way, without solving differential equations. The use of our method is demonstrated for Kerr, Kerr-Newman-NUT-AdS metric…
The Demiański-Janis-Newman algorithm is an original solution generating technique. For a long time it has been limited to producing rotating solutions, restricting to the case of a metric and real scalar fields, despite the fact that Demiański extended it to include more parameters such as a NUT charge. Recently two independent prescriptions have been given for extending the algorithm to gauge fields and thus electrically charged configurations. In this paper we aim to end setting up the algorithm by providing a missing but important piece, which is how the transformation is applied to complex…
We generalize the classification of all supersymmetric solutions of pure N=2, D=4 gauged supergravity to the case when external sources are included. It is shown that the source must be an electrically charged dust. We give a particular solution to the resulting equations, that describes a Goedel-type universe preserving one quarter of the supersymmetries.
We derive a simple formula for the action of any supersymmetric solution to minimal gauged supergravity in the AdS$_4$/CFT$_3$ correspondence. Such solutions are equipped with a supersymmetric Killing vector, and we show that the holographically renormalized action may be expressed entirely in terms of the weights of this vector field at its fixed points, together with certain topological data. In this sense, the classical gravitational partition function localizes in the bulk. We illustrate our general formula with a number of explicit examples, in which exact dual field theory computations a…
We obtain first order equations that determine a supersymmetric kink solution in five-dimensional N=8 gauged supergravity. The kink interpolates between an exterior anti-de Sitter region with maximal supersymmetry and an interior anti-de Sitter region with one quarter of the maximal supersymmetry. One eighth of supersymmetry is preserved by the kink as a whole. We interpret it as describing the renormalization group flow in N=4 super-Yang-Mills theory broken to an N=1 theory by the addition of a mass term for one of the three adjoint chiral superfields. A detailed correspondence is obtained be…
We study the integrability of geodesic flow in the background of some recently discovered charged rotating solutions of supergravity in four and five dimensions. Specifically, we work with the gauged multicharge Taub-NUT-Kerr-(Anti) de Sitter metric in four dimensions, and the $U(1)^3$ gauged charged-Kerr-(Anti) de Sitter black hole solution of N = 2 supergravity in five dimensions. We explicitly construct the Killing tensors that permit separation of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation in these spacetimes. These results prove integrability for a large class of previously known supergravity solutions…
We present a brief overview of black hole spacetimes admitting Killing-Yano tensors. In vacuum these include Kerr-NUT-(A)dS metrics and certain black brane solutions. In the presence of matter fields, (conformal) Killing-Yano symmetries are known to exist for the Plebanski-Demianski solution and (trivially) for any spacetime with spherical symmetry. Special attention is devoted to generalized Killing-Yano tensors of black holes in minimal gauged supergravity. Several aspects directly related to the existence of Killing-Yano tensors, such as the Kerr-Schild form, algebraic type of spacetimes, a…
I construct exact solutions for general nonextremal rotating, charged Kaluza-Klein black holes with a cosmological constant and with arbitrary angular momenta in all higher dimensions. I then investigate their thermodynamics and find their generalizations with the NUT charges. The metrics are given in both Boyer-Lindquist coordinates and a form very similar to the famous Kerr-Schild ansatz, which highlights its potential application to include multiple electric charges into solutions yet to be found in gauged supergravity. It is also observed that the metric ansatz in $D = 4$ dimensions is sim…
We use the recipe of arXiv:1003.2974 to find half-BPS near-horizon geometries in the t$^3$ model of $N=2$, $D=4$ gauged supergravity, and explicitely construct some new examples. Among these are black holes with noncompact horizons, but also with spherical horizons that have conical singularities (spikes) at one of the two poles. A particular family of them is extended to the full black hole geometry. Applying a double-Wick rotation to the near-horizon region, we obtain solutions with NUT charge that asymptote to curved domain walls with AdS$_3$ world volume. These new solutions may provide in…
The exact degeneracies of quarter-BPS dyons in Type II string theory on $K3 \times T^2$ are given by Fourier coefficients of the inverse of the Igusa cusp form. For a fixed magnetic charge invariant $m$, the generating function of these degeneracies naturally decomposes as a sum of two parts, which are supposed to account for single-centered black holes, and two-centered black hole bound states, respectively. The decomposition is such that each part is separately modular covariant but neither is holomorphic, calling for a physical interpretation of the non-holomorphy. We resolve this puzzle by…
We prove that any supersymmetric solution to five-dimensional minimal gauged supergravity with $SU(2)$ symmetry, that is timelike outside an analytic horizon, is a Gutowski-Reall black hole or its near-horizon geometry. The proof combines a delicate near-horizon analysis with the general form for a Kähler metric with cohomogeneity-1 $SU(2)$ symmetry. We also prove that any timelike supersymmetric soliton solution to this theory, with $SU(2)$ symmetry and a nut or a complex bolt, has a Kähler base with enhanced $U(1)\times SU(2)$ symmetry, and we exhibit a family of asymptotically AdS$_5/\mathb…
Many black hole spacetimes with a 3-form field exhibit a hidden symmetry encoded in a torsion generalization of the principal Killing--Yano tensor. This tensor determines basic properties of such black holes while also underlying the separability of the Hamilton--Jacobi, Klein--Gordon, and (torsion-modified) Dirac field equations in their background. As a specific example, we consider the Chong--Cvetič--Lü--Pope black hole of $D=5$ minimal gauged supergravity and show that the torsion-modified vector field equations can also be separated, with the principal tensor playing a key role in the sep…
We investigate Killing tensors for various black hole solutions of supergravity theories. Rotating black holes of an ungauged theory, toroidally compactified heterotic supergravity, with NUT parameters and two U(1) gauge fields are constructed. If both charges are set equal, then the solutions simplify, and then there are concise expressions for rank-2 conformal Killing-Stackel tensors. These are induced by rank-2 Killing-Stackel tensors of a conformally related metric that possesses a separability structure. We directly verify the separation of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation on this conformally…
Families of exact $(0,2)$ supersymmetric conformal field theories of magnetically and electrically charged extremal 4D black hole solutions of heterotic string theory are presented. They are constructed using a $(0,1)$ supersymmetric $SL(2,R)\times SU(2)$ WZW model where anomalously embedded $U(1)\times U(1)$ subgroups are gauged. Crucial cancelations of the $U(1)$ anomalies coming from the supersymmetric fermions, the current algebra fermions and the gauging ensure that there is a consistency of these models at the quantum level. Various 2D models, which may be considered as building blocks f…
We use the Atiyah-Singer index theorem to derive the general form of the one-loop corrections to observables in asymptotically anti-de Sitter (AdS$_4$) supersymmetric backgrounds of abelian gauged supergravity. Using the method of supergravity localization combined with the factorization of the supergravity action on fixed points (NUTs) and fixed two-manifolds (Bolts) we show that an analogous factorization takes place for the one-loop determinants of supergravity fields. This allows us to propose a general fixed-point formula for the logarithmic corrections to a large class of supersymmetric …
Using the general recipe given in arXiv:0804.0009, where all timelike supersymmetric solutions of N=2, D=4 gauged supergravity coupled to abelian vector multiplets were classified, we construct genuine rotating supersymmetric black holes in AdS(4) with nonconstant scalar fields. This is done for the SU(1,1)/U(1) model with prepotential F=-iX^0X^1. In the static case, the black holes are uplifted to eleven dimensions, and generalize the solution found in hep-th/0105250 corresponding to membranes wrapping holomorphic curves in a Calabi-Yau five-fold. The constructed rotating black holes preserve…
In general relativity, the gyromagnetic ratio for all stationary, axisymmetric and asymptotically flat Einstein-Maxwell fields is known to be g=2. In this paper, we continue our previous works of examination this result for rotating charged spacetimes with asymptotic non-flat structure. We first consider two instructive examples of these spacetimes: The spacetime of a Kerr-Newman black hole with a straight cosmic string on its axis of symmetry and the Kerr-Newman Taub-NUT spacetime. We show that for both spacetimes the gyromagnetic ratio g=2 independent of their asymptotic structure. We also e…
