We study the scrambling properties of $(d+1)$-dimensional hyperbolic black holes. Using the eikonal approximation, we calculate out-of-time-order correlators (OTOCs) for a Rindler-AdS geometry with AdS radius $\ell$, which is dual to a $d-$dimensional conformal field theory (CFT) in hyperbolic space with temperature $T = 1/(2 π\ell)$. We find agreement between our results for OTOCs and previously reported CFT calculations. For more generic hyperbolic black holes, we compute the butterfly velocity in two different ways, namely: from shock waves and from a pole-skipping analysis, finding perfect agreement between the two methods. The butterfly velocity $v_B(T)$ nicely interpolates between the Rindler-AdS result $v_B(T=\frac{1}{2π\ell})=\frac{1}{d-1}$ and the planar result $v_B(T \gg \frac{1}{\ell})=\sqrt{\frac{d}{2(d-1)}}$.
The "pole-skipping" phenomenon reflects that the retarded Green's function is not unique at a pole-skipping point in momentum space $(ω,k)$. We explore the universality of the pole-skipping in different geometries. In holography, near horizon analysis of the bulk equation of motion is a simpler way to derive a pole-skipping point and we use this method in Lifshitz, AdS$_2$ and Rindler geometries. We also study the complex hydrodynamic analyses and find that the dispersion relations in terms of dimensionless variables $\fracω{2πT}$ and $\frac{\vert k\vert}{2πT}$ pass through pole-skipping point…
The pole-skipping phenomenon is a special property of the retarded Green's function of black hole perturbations. We turn to its analog in acoustic black holes, which may relate to experiments. The frequencies of these special points are located at negative integer (imaginary) Matsubara frequencies $ω=-i2πTn$, which are consistent with the imaginary frequencies of quasinormal modes (QNMs). This implies that the lower-half plane pole-skipping phenomena have the same physical meaning as the imaginary part of QNMs, which represents the dissipation of perturbation of acoustic black holes and is rel…
Recently, a direct signature of chaos in many body system has been realized from the energy density retarded Green's function using the phenomenon of `pole skipping'. Moreover, special locations in the complex frequency and momentum plane are found, known as the pole skipping points such that the retarded Green's function can not be defined uniquely there. In this paper, we compute the correction/shift to the pole skipping points due to a spatial anisotropy in a holographic system by performing near horizon analysis of EOMs involving different bulk field perturbations, namely the scalar, the a…
Recent work has suggested an intriguing relation between quantum chaos and energy density correlations, known as pole skipping. We investigate this relationship in two dimensional conformal field theories on a finite size spatial circle by studying the thermal energy density retarded two-point function on a torus. We find that the location $ω_* = i λ$ of pole skipping in the complex frequency plane is determined by the central charge and the stress energy one-point function $\langle T\rangle$ on the torus. In addition, we find a bound on $λ$ in $c>1$ compact, unitary CFT$_2$s identical to the …
We study the pole-skipping phenomenon of the scalar retarded Green's function in the rotating BTZ black hole background. In the static case, the pole-skipping points are typically located at negative imaginary Matsubara frequencies $ω=-(2πT)ni$ with appropriate values of complex wave number $q$. But, in a $(1+1)$-dimensional CFT, one can introduce temperatures for left-moving and right-moving sectors independently. As a result, the pole-skipping points $ω$ depend both on left and right temperatures in the rotating background. In the extreme limit, the pole-skipping does not occur in general. B…

We examine thermal Green's functions of fermionic operators in quantum field theories with gravity duals. The calculations are performed on the gravity side using ingoing Eddington-Finkelstein coordinates. We find that at negative imaginary Matsubara frequencies and special values of the wavenumber, there are multiple solutions to the bulk equations of motion that are ingoing at the horizon and thus the boundary Green's function is not uniquely defined. At these points in Fourier space a line of poles and a line of zeros of the correlator intersect. We analyze these `pole-skipping' points in t…
The pole-skipping phenomenon has been proposed as a connection between chaotic properties of black hole geometries and special points where regular solutions of linearized Einstein equations at horizons have extra free parameters. In this work, we pursue the special points in the near-horizon analysis of integer spin-$\ell$ fields on the Rindler-AdS black hole. We construct linear combinations of field components to simplify coupled equations of massive fields and investigate towers of the special points along with imaginary Matsubara frequencies $iω=2π(n+1-\ell)T$ with a non-negative integer …
We study scalar and vector exchange terms in out-of-time-order correlators (OTOCs) holographically. By applying a computational method in graviton exchange, we analyze exponential behaviors in scalar and vector exchange terms at late times. We show that their exponential behaviors in simple holographic models are related to pole-skipping points obtained from the near-horizon equations of motion of scalar and vector fields. Our results are generalizations of the relation between the graviton exchange effect in OTOCs and the pole-skipping phenomena of the dual operator, to scalar and vector fiel…
Recent developments have revealed a new phenomenon, i.e. the residues of the poles of the holographic retarded two point functions of generic operators vanish at certain complex values of the frequency and momentum. This so-called pole-skipping phenomenon can be determined holographically by the near horizon dynamics of the bulk equations of the corresponding fields. In particular, the pole-skipping point in the upper half plane of complex frequency has been shown to be closed related to many-body chaos, while those in the lower half plane also places universal and nontrivial constraints on th…
In this note we analyse the equations of motion of a minimally coupled Rarita-Schwinger field near the horizon of an anti-de Sitter-Schwarzschild geometry. We find that at special complex values of the frequency and momentum there exist two independent regular solutions that are ingoing at the horizon. These special points in Fourier space are associated with the `pole-skipping' phenomenon in thermal two-point functions of operators that are holographically dual to the bulk fields. We find that the leading pole-skipping point is located at a positive imaginary frequency with the distance from …
It is well-known that chiral anomaly can be macroscopically detected through the energy and charge transport, due to the chiral magnetic effect. On the other hand, in a holographic many body system, the chaotic modes might be only associated with the energy conservation. This suggests that, perhaps, one can detect microscopic anomalies through the diagnosis of quantum chaos in such systems. To investigate this idea, we consider a magnetized brane in AdS space time with a Chern-Simons coupling in the bulk. By studying the shock wave geometry in this background, we first compute the correspondin…
We investigate the "pole-skipping" phenomenon in holographic chaos. According to the pole-skipping, the energy-density Green's function is not unique at a special point in complex momentum plane. This arises because the bulk field equation has two regular near-horizon solutions at the special point. We study the regularity of two solutions more carefully using curvature invariants. In the upper-half $ω$-plane, one solution, which is normally interpreted as the outgoing mode, is in general singular at the future horizon and produces a curvature singularity. However, at the special point, both s…

We study pole skipping in holographic CFTs dual to diffeomorphism invariant theories containing an arbitrary number of bosonic fields in the large $N$ limit. Defining a weight to organize the bulk equations of motion, a set of general pole-skipping conditions are derived. In particular, the frequencies simply follow from general covariance and weight matching. In the presence of higher spin fields, we find that the imaginary frequency for the highest-weight pole-skipping point equals the higher-spin Lyapunov exponent which lies outside of the chaos bound. Without higher spin fields, we show th…
Recently, it is shown that many Green's functions are not unique at special points in complex momentum space using AdS/CFT. This phenomenon is similar to the pole-skipping in holographic chaos, and the special points are typically located at $ω_n = -(2πT)ni$ with appropriate values of complex wave number $q_n$. We study finite-coupling corrections to special points. As examples, we consider four-derivative corrections to gravitational perturbations and four-dimensional Maxwell perturbations. While $ω_n$ is uncorrected, $q_n$ is corrected at finite coupling. Some special points disappear at par…
Pole skipping is a recently discovered subtle effect in the thermal energy density retarded two point function at a special point in the complex $(ω,p)$ planes. We propose that pole skipping is determined by the stress tensor contribution to many-body chaos, and the special point is at $(ω,p)_\text{p.s.}= i λ^{(T)}(1,1/u_B^{(T)})$, where $λ^{(T)}=2π/β$ and $u_B^{(T)}$ are the stress tensor contributions to the Lyapunov exponent and the butterfly velocity respectively. While this proposal is consistent with previous studies conducted for maximally chaotic theories, where the stress tensor domin…
We study a holographic construction of conformal blocks in the Regge limit of four-point scalar correlation functions by using coordinates of the two-sided Rindler-AdS black hole. As a generalization of geodesic Witten diagrams, we construct diagrams with four external scalar fields in the Rindler-AdS black hole by integrating over two half-geodesics between the centers of Penrose diagrams and points at the AdS boundary. We demonstrate that late-time behaviors of the diagrams coincide with the Regge behaviors of conformal blocks. We also point out their relevance with the pole-skipping phenome…
We consider a holographic thermal state and perturb it by a scalar operator whose associated real-time Green's function has only gapped poles. These gapped poles correspond to the non-hydrodynamic quasinormal modes of a massive scalar perturbation around a Schwarzschild black brane. Relations between pole-skipping points, critical points and quasinormal modes in general emerge when the mass of the scalar and hence the dual operator dimension is varied. First, this novel analysis reveals a relation between the location of a mode in the infinite tower of quasinormal modes and the number of pole-…
We study the relationship between many-body quantum chaos and energy dynamics in holographic quantum field theory states dual to the simply-spinning Myers-Perry-AdS$_5$ black hole. The enhanced symmetry of such black holes allows us to provide a thorough examination of the phenomenon of pole-skipping, that is significantly simpler than a previous analysis of quantum field theory states dual to the Kerr-AdS$_4$ solution. In particular we give a general proof of pole-skipping in the retarded energy density Green's function of the dual quantum field theory whenever the spatial profile of energy f…
We develop a method to study coupled dynamics of gauge-invariant variables, constructed out of metric and gauge field fluctuations on the background of a AdS$_5$ Reissner-Nordström black brane. Using this method, we compute the numerical spectrum of quasinormal modes associated with fluctuations of spin 0, 1 and 2, non-perturbatively in $μ/T$. We also analytically compute the spectrum of hydrodynamic excitations in the small chemical potential limit. Then, by studying the spectral curve at complex momenta in every spin channel, we numerically find points at which hydrodynamic and non-hydrodyna…
We study the connection between many-body quantum chaos and energy dynamics for the holographic theory dual to the Kerr-AdS black hole. In particular, we determine a partial differential equation governing the angular profile of gravitational shock waves that are relevant for the computation of out-of-time ordered correlation functions (OTOCs). Further we show that this shock wave profile is directly related to the behaviour of energy fluctuations in the boundary theory. In particular, we demonstrate using the Teukolsky formalism that at complex frequency $ω_* = i 2 πT$ there exists an extra i…

Bounds on transport represent a way of understanding allowable regimes of quantum and classical dynamics. Numerous such bounds have been proposed, either for classes of theories or (by using general arguments) universally for all theories. Few are exact and inviolable. I present a new set of methods and sufficient conditions for deriving exact, rigorous, and sharp bounds on all coefficients of hydrodynamic dispersion relations, including diffusivity and the speed of sound. These general techniques combine analytic properties of hydrodynamics and the theory of univalent (complex holomorphic and…
Duality and four-dimensional black holes: gravitational waves, algebraically special solutions, pole skipping, and the spectral duality relation in holographic thermal CFTs
We study quantum chaos of rotating BTZ black holes in Topologically Massive gravity (TMG). We discuss the relationship between chaos parameters including Lyapunov exponents and butterfly velocities from shock wave calculations of out-of-time-order correlators (OTOC) and from pole-skipping analysis. We find a partial match between pole-skipping and the OTOC results in the high temperature regime. We also find that the velocity bound puts a chaos constraint on the gravitational Chern-Simons coupling.
