We calculate the total cross section for deep inelastic scattering (DIS) on a nucleus at high energy for a strongly coupled N=4 super Yang-Mills theory using AdS/CFT correspondence. In analogy to the small coupling case we argue that at high energy the total DIS cross section is related to the expectation value of the Wilson loop formed by the quark-antiquark dipole. We model the nucleus by a metric of a shock wave in AdS_5. We then calculate the expectation value of the Wilson loop by finding the extrema of the Nambu-Goto action for an open string attached to the quark and antiquark lines of the loop in the background of an AdS_5 shock wave. We find three extrema of the Nambu-Goto action: the string coordinates at the extrema are complex-valued and are given by three different branches of the solution of a cubic equation. The physically meaningful solutions for the total DIS cross section are given either by the only branch with a purely imaginary string coordinate in the bulk or by a superposition of the two other branches. For both solutions we obtain the forward scattering amplitude N for the quark dipole-nucleus scattering. We study the onset of unitarity with increasing center-of-mass energy and transverse size of the dipole: we observe that for both solutions the saturation scale, while energy-dependent at lower energies, at very high energy becomes independent of energy/Bjorken-x. The saturation scale depends very strongly on the atomic number of the nucleus as Q_s ~ A^{1/3}.
We calculate the cross section of an ultra relativistic nucleus scattering on a qq^(bar) pair at large coupling in N=4 SUSY gauge theory. We study the problem in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence. The nucleus is modeled as a gravitational shockwave in an AdS_5 background moving along the light cone. The dipole qq^(bar) is represented by a Wilson loop moving in the opposite direction. Due to the correspondence, calculating the scattering amplitude of the Wilson loop with the nucleus reduces to calculating the extreme value of the Nambu-Goto action for an open string. Its two end points …
A number of recent papers have applied the AdS/CFT correspondence to a strong-coupling calculation of the medium-induced radiative parton energy loss in nucleus-nucleus collisions at RHIC. The predicted value of the "jet quenching parameter" q, however, is rather small compared to the experimental results. For hot N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory, certain marginal deformations can have the effect of enhancing q. This result is highly sensitive to the location of the fundamental string's endpoints in the internal space.
We calculate the total cross section for the scattering of a quark--anti-quark dipole on a large nucleus at high energy for a strongly coupled N=4 super Yang-Mills theory using AdS/CFT correspondence. We model the nucleus by a metric of a shock wave in AdS_5. We then calculate the expectation value of the Wilson loop (the dipole) by finding the extrema of the Nambu-Goto action for an open string attached to the quark and antiquark lines of the loop in the background of an AdS_5 shock wave. We find two physically meaningful extremal string configurations. For both solutions we obtain the forwar…
We evaluate the Poynting vector generated by a heavy quark moving through a thermal state of N=4 gauge theory using AdS/CFT. A significant diffusion wake is observed as well as a Mach cone. We discuss the ratio of the energy going into sound modes to the energy coming in from the wake.
We review some recent applications of the AdS/CFT correspondence to heavy ion collisions including a calculation of the jet quenching parameter in N=4 super-Yang-Mills theory and quarkonium suppression from velocity scaling of the screening length for a heavy quark-antiquark pair. We also briefly discuss differences and similarities between QCD and N=4 Super-Yang-Mills theory.
We present a discussion on recent progress in high energy diffraction from the perspective of AdS/CFT, through which a unified treatment for both perturbative and nonperturbative Pomeron emerges. By working with Unitary Irreducible Representation of Conformal group, a frame is provided in extending AdS/CFT to both forward and nearforward scattering. We present an analysis involving an exact solution to conformal blocks in Minkowski CFT and discuss possible applications. Phenomenological applications can range from forward scattering to DIS/DVCS/TMD at LHC energies and beyond.
It has been proposed that Randall-Sundrum models can be holographically described by a regularized (broken) conformal field theory. We analyze the foundations of this duality using a regularized version of the AdS/CFT correspondence. We compare two- and three-point correlation functions and find the same behaviour in both descriptions. In particular, we show that the regularization of the deformed CFT generates kinetic terms for the sources, which hence can be naturally treated as dynamical fields. We also discuss the counterterms required for two- and three-point correlators in the renormaliz…
We investigate the softwall AdS/CFT model. We specifically looked at the Pomeron, leading Regge contribution to a scattering process and used it to fit deep inelastic scattering data from the HERA collaboration. We find that the model fits the data with much more success than the purely conformal case, and find similar success to previous confinement models.
We derive bounds analogous to the Froissart bound for the absorptive part of CFT$_d$ Mellin amplitudes. Invoking the AdS/CFT correspondence, these amplitudes correspond to scattering in AdS$_{d+1}$. We can take a flat space limit of the corresponding bound. We find the standard Froissart-Martin bound, including the coefficient in front for $d+1=4$ being $π/μ^2$, $μ$ being the mass of the lightest exchange. For $d>4$, the form is different. We show that while for $CFT_{d\leq 6}$, the number of subtractions needed to write a dispersion relation for the Mellin amplitude is equal to 2, for $CFT_{d…
String theory has long ago been initiated by the quest for a theoretical explanation of the observed high-energy ``Regge behaviour'' of strong interaction amplitudes, but this 35-years-old puzzle is still unsoved. We discuss how modern tools like the AdS/CFT correspondence give a new insight on the problem.
For an effective AdS theory, we present a simple prescription to compute the renormalization of its dual boundary field theory. In particular, we define anomalous dimension holographically as the dependence of the wave-function renormalization factor on the radial cutoff in the Poincare patch of AdS. With this definition, the anomalous dimensions of both single- and double- trace operators are calculated. Three different dualities are considered with the field theory being CFT, CFT with a double-trace deformation and spontaneously broken CFT. For the second dual pair, we compute scaling correc…
The AdS/CFT correspondence is developed from classical solutions on AdS_5 with two boundaries. The corresponding limits and the reduction of degrees of freedom are discussed, as well as the required renormalization on the field theory side. The Hamiltonian first-order approach towards the solution of coupled gravitational/matter equations of motion is introduced, and the RG interpretation is exposed. Finally we discuss a recent approach towards a naturally vanishing cosmological constant which is based on the AdS/RG correspondence.
In the context of AdS3/CFT2, we address spacetimes with a certain sort of internal infinity as typified by the extreme BTZ black hole. The internal infinity is a null circle lying at the end of the black hole's infinite throat. We argue that such spacetimes may be described by a product CFT of the form CFT-L * CFT-R, where CFT-R is associated with the asymptotically AdS boundary while CFT-L is associated with the null circle. Our particular calculations analyze the CFT dual of the extreme BTZ black hole in a linear toy model of AdS3/CFT2. Since the BTZ black hole is a quotient of AdS3, the dua…
We discuss a possible relation between singletons in $AdS$ space and logarithmic conformal field theories at the boundary of $AdS$. It is shown that the bulk Lagrangian for singleton field (singleton dipole) induces on the boundary the two-point correlation function for logarithmic pair. Bulk interpretation of mixing between logarithmic operator $D$ and zero mode operator $C$ under the scale transformation is discussed as well as some other issues.
We study implications of the weak gravity conjecture in the AdS/CFT correspondence. Unlike in Minkowski spacetime, AdS spacetime has a physical length scale, so that the conjecture must be generalized with an additional parameter. We discuss possible generalizations and translate them into the language of dual CFTs, which take the form of inequalities involving the dimension and charge of an operator as well as the current and energy-momentum tensor central charges. We then test these inequalities against various CFTs to see if they are universally obeyed by all the CFTs. We find that certain …
We discuss analytic continuation from d-dimensional Lorentzian de Sitter (dS$_d$) to d-dimensional Lorentzian anti-de Sitter (AdS$_{d}$) spacetime. We show that AdS$_{d}$, with opposite signature of the metric, can be obtained as analytic continuation of a portion of dS$_d$. This implies that the dynamics of (positive square-mass) scalar particles in AdS$_{d}$ can be obtained from the dynamics of tachyons in dS$_d$. We discuss this correspondence both at the level of the solution of the field equations and of the Green functions. The AdS/CFT duality is obtained as analytic continuation of the …
We compute fluctuations in the modular energy of the vacuum associated with a Rindler-wedge in AdS spacetime in the context of AdS/CFT. We discuss the possible effect of these energy fluctuations on the spacetime geometry, and on the traversal time of a light beam propagating from the boundary to the bulk and back.
We discuss dilatonic gravity (bulk theory) from the point of view of (generalized) AdS/CFT correspondence. Self-consistent dilatonic background is considered. It may be understood as two boundaries space where AdS boundary appears as infinite boundary and new (singular) boundary occurs at short distances. The two-point correlation function and conformal dimension for minimal and dilaton coupled scalar are found. Even for minimal scalar, the conformal dimension is found to be different on above two boundaries. Hence, new CFT appears in AdS/CFT correspondence at short distances. AdS/CFT correspo…
This is a pedagogical introduction to the AdS/CFT correspondence, based on lectures delivered by the author at the third IDPASC school. Starting with the conceptual basis of the holographic dualities, the subject is developed emphasizing some concrete topics, which are discussed in detail. A very brief introduction to string theory is provided, containing the minimal ingredients to understand the origin of the AdS/CFT duality. Other topics covered are the holographic calculation of correlation functions, quark-antiquark potentials and transport coefficients.
We introduce the AdS/CFT correspondence as a natural extension of QFT in a fixed AdS background. We start by reviewing some general concepts of CFT, including the embedding space formalism. We then consider QFT in a fixed AdS background and show that one can define boundary operators that enjoy very similar properties as in a CFT, except for the lack of a stress tensor. Including a dynamical metric in AdS generates a boundary stress tensor and completes the CFT axioms. We also discuss some applications of the bulk geometric intuition to strongly coupled QFT. Finally, we end with a review of th…
We derive the Cutkosky rules for conformal field theories (CFTs) at weak and strong coupling. These rules give a simple, diagrammatic method to compute the double-commutator that appears in the Lorentzian inversion formula. We first revisit weakly-coupled CFTs in flat space, where the cuts are performed on Feynman diagrams. We then generalize these rules to strongly-coupled holographic CFTs, where the cuts are performed on the Witten diagrams of the dual theory. In both cases, Cutkosky rules factorize loop diagrams into on-shell sub-diagrams and generalize the standard S-matrix cutting rules. …
We reconsidered the quantum gravity description of the near horizon extremal Reissner-Nordstrøm black hole in the viewpoint of the AdS$_2$/CFT$_1$ correspondence. We found that, for pure electric case, the right moving central charge of dual 1D CFT is $6 Q^2$ which is different from the previous result $6 Q^3$ of left moving sector obtained by warped AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$ description. We discussed the discrepancy in these two approaches and examined novel properties of our result.
Dual AdS/CFT correlators can be computed in two ways: differentiate the bulk partition function with respect to boundary conditions, or extrapolate bulk correlation functions to the boundary. These dictionaries were conjectured to be equivalent by Banks, Douglas, Horowitz, and Martinec. We revisit this question at the level of bulk path integrals, showing that agreement in the presence of interactions requires careful treatment of the renormalization of bulk composite operators. By contrast, we emphasize that proposed dS/CFT analogues of the two dictionaries are inequivalent. Next, we show qui…
We discuss the concept of composite fields in flat CFT as well as in the context of AdS/CFT. Furthermore we show how to represent Green functions using generalized hypergeometric functions and apply these techniques to four-point functions. Finally we prove an identity of $U(1)_Y$ symmetry for four-point functions.
We show some implications of the approach to AdS/CFT correspondence based on Type IIB string in the flat space-time with D3-branes proposed in our previous paper. We discuss a correspondence for high energy scattering amplitudes of N=4 super-Yang-Mills proposed recently. We also discuss AdS/CFT correspondence at finite temperature. Our approach provides clear understanding of these issues.
We advance a holographic construction for the entanglement negativity of bipartite mixed state configurations of two disjoint intervals in $(1+1)$ dimensional conformal field theories ($CFT_{1+1}$) through the $AdS_3/CFT_2$ correspondence. Our construction constitutes the large central charge analysis of the entanglement negativity for mixed states under consideration and involves a specific algebraic sum of bulk space like geodesics anchored on appropriate intervals in the dual $CFT_{1+1}$. The construction is utilized to compute the holographic entanglement negativity for such mixed states i…
In this article we review the recently discovered asymptotic integrability in the planar N = 4 SYM theory and discuss its breakdown beyond the asymptotic region due to the wrapping interactions. We also discuss novel dynamical tests of the AdS/CFT correspondence one can perform in the special cases when the wrapping interactions may be neglected.
This paper presents a detailed discussion of the issue of supergravity perturbations around the flat five dimensional superspace required for manifest superspace formulations of the supergravity side of the AdS_{5}/CFT_{4} Correspondence.
We discuss some aspects of the recently discovered BPS black ring solutions in terms of the AdS/CFT correspondence. In the type IIB frame in which the black ring carries the charges of the D1-D5-P system, we propose a microscopic description of the rings in the orbifold CFT governing this system. In our proposal, the CFT effectively splits into two parts: one part captures the supertube-like properties of the ring, and the other captures the entropy. We can also understand the black ring entropy by relating the geometry near the ring to BPS black holes in four dimensions, although this latter …
We discuss how the variational principle can be used as a criterion for choosing, among scalar field actions implying the same equation of motion, the appropriate one for the AdS/CFT correspondence.
In the AdS/CFT correspondence, CFTs are identified by asymptotic boundary surfaces and the boundary conditions imposed on those surfaces. However, AdS can be foliated in various ways to give different boundaries. We show that the CFTs obtained using certain distinct foliations are different. This difference arises because the asymptotic region of a foliation overlaps with the deep interior region of another. In particular we focus on the CFTs defined on surfaces of large constant radius in global coordinates, Rindler-AdS coordinates, and Poincaré coordinates for AdS$_3$. We refer to these as g…
We study the four--point function of chiral primaries corresponding to the dilaton--axion sector in supergravity in the $AdS_5$/CFT$_4$ correspondence. We find relations between some of the supergravity graphs and compute their leading singularities. We discuss the issue of logarithmic singularities and their significance for the OPE structure of the CFT.
We present a short review of hep-th/0306170. In the context of AdS/CFT correspondence, we explore what information from behind the horizon of the bulk black hole geometry can be found in boundary CFT correlators. In particular, we argue that the CFT correlators contain distinct, albeit subtle, signals of the black hole singularity.
What is the dimension of spacetime? We address this question in the context of the AdS/CFT Correspondence. We give a prescription for computing the number of large bulk dimensions, $D$, from strongly-coupled CFT$_d$ data, where "large" means parametrically of order the AdS scale. The idea is that unitarity of 1-loop AdS amplitudes, dual to non-planar CFT correlators, fixes $D$ in terms of tree-level data. We make this observation rigorous by deriving a positive-definite sum rule for the 1-loop double-discontinuity in the flat space/bulk-point limit. This enables us to prove an array of AdS/CFT…
The Wilson loop in N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory admits a dual description as a macroscopic string configuration in the adS/CFT correspondence. We discuss the correction to the quark anti-quark potential arising from the fluctuations of the superstring.
We review recent applications of the integrable discrete Hirota dynamics (Y-system) in the context of calculation of the planar AdS/CFT spectrum. We start from the description of solution of Hirota equations by the Backlund method where the requirement of analyticity results in the nested Bethe ansatz equations. Then we discuss applications of the Hirota dynamics for the analysis of the asymptotic limit of long operators in the AdS/CFT Y-system.
We study the thermodynamics of the confined and unconfined phases of superconformal Yang-Mills in finite volume and at large N using the AdS/CFT correspondence. We discuss the necessary conditions for a smooth phase crossover and obtain an N-dependent curve for the phase boundary.
We advance a construction for the covariant holographic entanglement negativity for time dependent mixed states of disjoint intervals in $(1+1)$ dimensional conformal field theories ($CFT_{1+1}$) dual to bulk non static $AdS_3$ geometries. Application of our proposal to such mixed states in a $CFT_{1+1}$ dual to bulk non extremal and extremal rotating BTZ black holes exactly reproduces the replica technique results in the large central charge limit. We also investigate the time dependent holographic entanglement negativity for such mixed states in a $CFT_{1+1}$ dual to a bulk Vaidya-$AdS_3$ ge…
By the AdS/CFT correspondence, the expectation value of certain local operators in the CFT is given by the asymptotic value of supergravity fields. We show that these local expectation values contain a remarkable amount of information about small sources deep inside AdS_p x S^q. In particular, they contain essentially all the multipole moments. More importantly, one can use them to determine the size of a spherical source. This is not a small effect: The size appears in an exponentially large contribution to the expectation values. This provides an easy way for the CFT to distinguish stars fro…
Recently a set of functional equations defining the anomalous dimensions of arbitrary local single trace operators in planar N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory has been conjectured. These functional equations take the form of a Y-system defined on a special shaped domain. This Y-system can be equivalently reformulated as a T-system defined on a "T-shaped fat hook". The elements of the T-system satisfy discrete Hirota equations. In the present paper the discrete Hirota equations for AdS/CFT are solved by means of a chain of Backlund transformations and as a result TT-, TQ-, and QQ-relations a…
These lecture notes are based on a series of lectures given at the XIII Modave summer school in mathematical physics. We review the construction due to Hamilton, Kabat, Lifschytz and Lowe for reconstructing local bulk operators from CFT operators in the context of AdS/CFT and show how to recover bulk correlation functions from this definition. Building on the work of these authors, it has been noted that the bulk displays quantum error correcting properties. We will discuss tensor network toy models to exemplify these remarkable features. We will discuss the role of gauge invariance and of dif…
We use the AdS/CFT correspondence to study the DC conductivity of massive $\mathcal{N} = 2$ hypermultiplet fields in an $\mathcal{N} = 4\, SU(N_c)$ super-Yang-Mills theory plasma in the large $N_c$ and finite 't Hooft coupling. We also discuss general curvature-squared and Gauss-Bonnet corrections on the DC conductivity.
We show that suitably regulated multi-trace primary states in large N CFTs behave like `in' and `out' scattering states in the flat-space limit of AdS. Their transition matrix elements approach the exact scattering amplitudes for the bulk theory, providing a natural CFT definition of the flat space S-Matrix. We study corrections resulting from the AdS curvature and particle propagation far from the center of AdS, and show that AdS simply provides an IR regulator that disappears in the flat space limit.
We construct an exact metric which at short distances is the metric of massless particles in 5+1 spacetime (moving along a diameter of the sphere) and is AdS_3\times S^3 at infinity. We also consider a set of a conical defect spacetimes which are locally AdS_3\times S^3 and have the masses and charges of a special set of chiral primaries of the dual orbifold CFT. We find that excitation energies for a scalar field in the latter geometries agree exactly with the excitations in the corresponding CFT state created by twist operators: redshift in the geometry reproduces `long circle' physics in th…
We deform the AdS/CFT Correspondence by the inclusion of a non-supersymmetric scalar mass operator. We discuss the behaviour of the dual 5 dimensional supergravity field then lift the full solution to 10 dimensions. Brane probing the resulting background reveals a potential consistent with the operator we wished to insert.
AdS/CFT duality is a conjectured dual correspondence between the large $N$ limit of Conformal Field Theory (CFT) in $d$-dimensions and the supergravity (SUGRA) in $d+1$-dimensional Anti de Sitter (AdS) space. By using this conjecture, we can study various properties of large $N$ CFT by simple calculations in SUGRA. Recently much attention has been paid to the Renormalization Group (RG) flow viewed from the SUGRA side. Such RG flow in CFT is known to be characterized by the c-function which connects CFTs with different central charges. Therefore, we are interested in deriving this c-function fr…
We discuss a simple derivation of the real-time AdS/CFT prescription as an analytic continuation of the corresponding problem in Euclidean signature. We then extend the formalism to spinor operators and apply it to the examples of real-time fermionic correlators in CFTs dual to pure AdS and the BTZ black hole.
It is a long-standing conjecture that any CFT with a large central charge and a large gap $Δ_{\text{gap}}$ in the spectrum of higher-spin single-trace operators must be dual to a local effective field theory in AdS. We prove a sharp form of this conjecture by deriving numerical bounds on bulk Wilson coefficients in terms of $Δ_{\text{gap}}$ using the conformal bootstrap. Our bounds exhibit the scaling in $Δ_{\text{gap}}$ expected from dimensional analysis in the bulk. Our main tools are dispersive sum rules that provide a dictionary between CFT dispersion relations and S-matrix dispersion rela…
We study families of one-dimensional CFTs relevant for describing gapped QFTs in AdS$_2$. Using the Polyakov bootstrap as our main tool, we explain how S-matrices emerge from the flat space limit of CFT correlators. In this limit we prove that the CFT OPE density matches that of a generalized free field, and that this implies unitarity of the S-matrix. We establish a CFT dispersion formula for the S-matrix, proving its analyticity except for singularities on the real axis which we characterize in terms of the CFT data. In particular positivity of the OPE establishes that any such S-matrix must…
We present a general discussion of the properties of three dimensional CFT duals to the AdS string theory vacua coming from type IIB Calabi-Yau flux compactifications. Both KKLT and Large Volume Scenario (LVS) minima are considered. In both cases we identify the large `central charge', find a separation of scales between the radius of AdS and the size of the extra dimensions and show that the dual CFT has only a limited number of operators with small conformal dimension. Differences between the two sets of duals are identified. Besides a different amount of supersymmetry ($\mathcal{N}=1$ for K…
We find a new quantum Yangian symmetry of the AdS/CFT S-matrix, which complements the original su(2|2) symmetry to gl(2|2) and does not have a Lie algebra analog. Our finding is motivated by the Yangian double structure discovered at the classical level.
We consider current-current correlators in 4d $\N =1$ SCFTs, and also 3d $\N =2$ SCFTs, in connection with AdS/CFT geometry. The superconformal $U(1)_R$ symmetry of the SCFT has the distinguishing property that, among all possibilities, it minimizes the coefficient, $τ_{RR}$ of its two-point function. We show that the geometric Z-minimization condition of Martelli, Sparks, and Yau precisely implements $τ_{RR}$ minimization. This gives a physical proof that Z-minimization in geometry indeed correctly determines the superconformal R-charges of the field theory dual. We further discuss and compar…
We calculate the difference of one-loop vacuum energies for massive scalar field in five-dimensional AdS black hole. (The same is done in five-dimensional deSitter space). In each case this difference is specified by the boundary conditions corresponding to the double-trace operator (massive term) and it describes RG flow in the manner discussed by Gubser-Mitra for pure AdS space. For AdS black hole there occurs instability which is the manifestation of the Hawking-Page phase transition. For stable phase of AdS black hole as well as for deSitter bulk, c-function found beyond the leading order …
We analyse D-branes on orbifolds with discrete torsion, extending earlier results. We analyze certain Abelian orbifolds of the type C^3/ Γ, where Γis given by Z_m x Z_n, for the most general choice of discrete torsion parameter. By comparing with the AdS/CFT correspondence, we can consider different geometries which give rise to the same physics. This identifies new mirror pairs and suggests new dualities at large N. As a by-product we also get a more geometric picture of discrete torsion.
We study in detail the analytic properties of the Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz (TBA) equations for the anomalous dimensions of composite operators in the planar limit of the 3D N=6 superconformal Chern-Simons gauge theory and derive functional relations for the jump discontinuities across the branch cuts in the complex rapidity plane. These relations encode the analytic structure of the Y functions and are extremely similar to the ones obtained for the previously-studied AdS(5)/CFT(4) case. Together with the Y-system and more basic analyticity conditions, they are completely equivalent to the TB…
