On the basis of macroscopic quantum electrodynamics, a theory of Casimir forces in the presence of on linearly amplifying bodies is presented which provides a consistent framework for studying the effect of, e.g., amplifying left-handed metamaterials on dispersion forces. A general formula for the Casimir force acting on an amplifying body is derived. It is shown that the force can be given in terms of the classical Green tensor and that it can be decomposed into a resonant component associated with emission processes and an off-resonant Lifshitz-type component looking formally the same as for a purely absorbing body. It is explicitly demonstrated that the result generalizes microscopic approaches beyond the perturbative domain: In the dilute-gas limit, the force acting on an amplifying body reduces to a sum over the Casimir--Polder forces acting on the excited body atoms.
A path-integral approach to the quantization of the electromagnetic field in a linearly amplifying magnetodielectric medium is presented. Two continua of inverted harmonic oscillators are used to describe the polarizability and magnetizability of the amplifying medium. The causal susceptibilities of the amplifying medium, with negative imaginary parts in finite frequency intervals, are identified and their relation to microscopic coupling functions are determined. By carefully relating the two-point functions of the field theory to the optical Green functions, we calculate the Casimir energy a…
The dynamics of three interacting objects has been investigated extensively in Newtonian gravitational physics (often termed the three-body problem), and is important for many quantum systems, including nuclei, Efimov states, and frustrated spin systems. However, the dynamics of three macroscopic objects interacting through quantum vacuum fluctuations (virtual photons) is still an unexplored frontier. Here, we report the first observation of Casimir interactions between three isolated macroscopic objects. We propose and demonstrate a three terminal switchable architecture exploiting opto-mecha…
A quantized form of Surface Plasmon Polariton (SPP) modes propagating on the metal thin film is provided, which is based on the Green's tensor method. Since the media will be considered lossy and dispersive, the amplification and attenuation of the SPP modes in various dielectric media, by applying different field frequencies, can be studied. We will also illustrate the difference between behavior of coherent and squeezed SPP modes in the amplifying media.
In this paper we will present a quantization method for SPP (Surface Plasmon Polariton) based on Green's tensor method, which is applied usually for quantization of EM-field in various dielectric media. This method will be applied for a semi-infinite structure, which contains metal and dielectric regions with one interface. Moreover, by introducing the quantized SPP, we will investigate the SPP propagation in the attenuating and amplifying systems. We will also consider two modes of SPP, i.e., coherent and squeezed states, and finally compare the propagation of these modes in the amplifying me…
After propagating through a random amplifying medium, a squeezed state commonly shows excess noise above the shot-noise level. Since large noise can significantly reduce the signal-to-noise ratio, it is detrimental for precision measurement. To circumvent this problem, we propose a noise-reduction scheme using wavefront shaping. It is demonstrated that the average output quantum noise can be effectively suppressed even beyond the shot-noise limit. Both the decrease on amplification strength and the increase on input squeezing strength can give rise to a decrease in the suppressed average quant…
The Casimir force between two parallel plates separated by anisotropic media is investigated. We theoretically calculate the Casimir force between two parallel plates when the interspace between the plates is filled with anisotropic media. Our result shows that the anisotropy of the material between the plates can significantly affect the Casimir force, especially the direction of the force. If ignoring the anisotropy of the in-between material makes the force to be repulsive (attractive), by contrast, taking the anisotropy into account may produce an extra attractive (repulsive) force. The ph…
We present a worldline method for the calculation of Casimir energies for scalar fields coupled to magnetodielectric media. The scalar model we consider may be applied in arbitrary geometries, and it corresponds exactly to one polarization of the electromagnetic field in planar layered media. Starting from the field theory for electromagnetism, we work with the two decoupled polarizations in planar media and develop worldline path integrals, which represent the two polarizations separately, for computing both Casimir and Casimir-Polder potentials. We then show analytically that the path integr…
It has recently been argued that Casimir-Lifshitz forces depend in detail on the microphysics of a system; calculations of the Casimir force in inhomogeneous media yield results that are cutoff-dependent. This result has been shown to hold generally. But suppose we introduce an inhomogeneous metamaterial into a cavity that effectively implements a simple distortion of the coordinate system. Considered in its 'virtual space', the optical properties of such a material are homogeneous and consequently free from the cutoff-dependency associated with inhomogeneous media. This conclusion should be r…
We address the long-standing controversy regarding the correct description of the electromagnetic energy-momentum tensor in media and its consequences for the Casimir force. The latter being due to the zero-point momentum of the electromagnetic field, competing approaches based on the Abraham or Maxwell stress tensor lead to different predictions. We consider the test scenario of two colloidal spherical particles submerged in a dielectric medium and use three criteria to distinguish the two approaches: we show that the Abraham stress tensor, and not the Maxwell stress tensor, leads to a Casimi…
Comment on "Casimir Force Acting on Magnetostatic Bodies Embedded in Media"
在最近的一篇论文[C。Raabe和D.- G. Welsch,Phys.
This work is a continuation of our papers from the last couple of years on the Casimir friction for a pair of particles at low relative velocity. The new element in the present analysis is to allow the media to be dense. Then the situation becomes more complex due to induced dipolar correlations, both within the two planes, and between the planes. We show that the structure of the problem can be simplified by regarding the two plates to be a generalized version of a pair of particles. The force is predicted to be very small, far beyond what is practically measurable.
Based on the theory of macroscopic quantum electrodynamics, we generalize the expression of the Casimir force for nonreciprocal media. The essential ingredient of this result is the Green's tensor between two nonreciprocal semi-infinite slabs including a reflexion matrix with four coefficients that mixes optical polarizations. This Green's tensor does not obey Lorentz's reciprocity and thus violates time-reversal symmetry. The general result for the Casimir force is analyzed in the retarded and nonretarded limits, concentrating on the influences arising from reflections with or without change …
A classification of the electromagnetic modes on open and closed spatial domains containing media with piecewise homogeneous permittivities is used to facilitate the derivation of quantum induced Casimir stresses in dielectrics. By directly exploiting the complex analytic properties of solutions of the macroscopic Maxwell equations for open systems it is shown how regular expressions for such stresses can be expressed in terms of double integrals involving either real or pure imaginary frequencies associated with harmonic modes in conformity with the Lifshitz theory for separated planar dielec…
This work is a continuation of our recent series of papers on Casimir friction, for a pair of particles of low relative particle velocity. Each particle is modeled as a simple harmonic oscillator. Our basic method, as before, is the use of quantum mechanical statistical mechanics, involving the Kubo formula, at finite temperature. In this work we begin by analyzing the Casimir friction between two particles polarizable in all spatial directions, this being a generalization of our study in EPL 91, 60003 (2010), which was restricted to a pair of particles with longitudinal polarization only. For…
We calculate the Casimir-Polder frequency shift and decay rate for an atom in front of a nonreciprocal medium by using macroscopic quantum electrodynamics. The results are a generalization of the respective quantities for matter with broken time-reversal symmetry which does not fulfill the Lorentz reciprocity principle. As examples, we contrast the decay rates, the resonant and nonresonant frequency shifts of a perfectly conducting (reciprocal) mirror to those of a perfectly reflecting nonreciprocal mirror. We find different power laws for the distance dependence of all quantities in the retar…
We demonstrate a fundamental breakdown of the photonic spontaneous emission (SE) formula derived from Fermi's golden rule, in absorptive and amplifying media, where one assumes the SE rate scales with the local photon density of states, an approach often used in more complex, semiclassical nanophotonics simulations. Using a rigorous quantization of the macroscopic Maxwell equations in the presence of arbitrary linear media, we derive a corrected Fermi's golden rule and master equation for a quantum two-level system (TLS) that yields a quantum pumping term and a modified decay rate that is net …
We derive exact expressions for the Casimir scalar interaction energy between media-separated eccentric dielectric cylinders and for the media-separated cylinder-plane geometry using a mode-summation approach. Similarly to the electromagnetic Casimir-Lifshitz interaction energy between fluid-separated planar plates, the force between cylinders is attractive or repulsive depending on the relative values of the permittivities of the three intervening media.
In a recent paper (arXiv:2003.00760) and a related article (Z. Naturforsch. A 75, 803-807), S.-A. Biehs et al. present erroneous interpretations of our work on the heat transfer driven by Casimir force. Here, we clarify several key concepts and refute their claims.
Here we reply to the comment of Li et al. (arXiv:2009.09377) on the preprint (arXiv:2003.00760) of our publication (Z. Naturforsch. A 75, 803-807; DOI:10.1515/zna-2020-0204).
We explore the statistical properties of the Casimir-Polder potential between a dielectric sphere and a three-dimensional heterogeneous medium, by means of extensive numerical simulations based on the scattering theory of Casimir forces. The simulations allow us to confirm recent predictions for the mean and standard deviation of the Casimir potential, and give us access to its full distribution function in the limit of a dilute distribution of heterogeneities. These predictions are compared with a simple statistical model based on a pairwise summation of the individual contributions of the co…
We present theoretical and numerical results for the screened Casimir effect between perfect metal surfaces in a plasma. We show how the Casimir effect in an electron-positron plasma can provide an important contribution to nuclear interactions. Our results suggest that there is a connection between Casimir forces and nucleon forces mediated by mesons. Correct nuclear energies and meson masses appear to emerge naturally from the screened Casimir-Lifshitz effect.
The derivation of Casimir forces between dielectrics can be simplified by ignoring absorption, calculating energy changes due to displacements of the dielectrics, and only then admitting absorption by allowing permittivities to be complex. As a first step towards a better understanding of this situation we consider in this paper the model of a dielectric as a collection of oscillators, each of which is coupled to a reservoir giving rise to damping and Langevin forces on the oscillators and a noise polarization acting as a source of a fluctuating electromagnetic (EM) field in the dielectric. Th…
Following a recent report on experiments it has been claimed that a phonon heat transfer through a vacuum gap between two solids due to quantum fluctuations had been measured. Here we make a theoretical analyzis of this mechanism and demonstrate that the Casimir force driven heat flux is at least 15 orders of magnitude smaller than the near-field heat flux between two solids at any given separating distance. Moreover, we provide compelling arguments that the measures reported are no more and no less a measure of the virtual temperatures of vibrating modes which does not allow an access to the …
We discuss the Casimir effect for boundary conditions involving perfect electromagnetic conductors (PEMCs). Based on the corresponding reciprocal Green's tensor we construct the Green's tensor for two perfectly reflecting plates with magnetoelectric coupling (non-reciprocal media) within the framework of macroscopic quantum electrodynamics. We calculate the Casimir force between two PEMC plates in terms of the PEMC parameter M and the duality transformation angle $θ$ resulting in a universal analytic expression that connects the attractive Casimir force with the repulsive Boyer force. We relat…
A general, exact formula is derived for the expectation value of the electromagnetic energy density of an inhomogeneous absorbing and dispersive dielectric medium in thermal equilibrium, assuming that the medium is well approximated as a continuum. From this formula we obtain the formal expression for the Casimir force density. Unlike most previous approaches to Casimir effects in which absorption is either ignored or admitted implicitly through the required analytic properties of the permittivity, we include dissipation explicitly via the coupling of each dipole oscillator of the medium to a …
Recently Yampol'skii et al. [Phys. Rev. A v.82, 032511 (2010)] advocated that Lifshitz theory is not applicable when the characteristic wavelength of the fluctuating electromagnetic field, responsible for the thermal correction to the Casimir force, is larger than the size of the metal test bodies. It was claimed that this is the case in experiments which exclude Lifshitz theory combined with the Drude model. We calculate the wavelengths of the evanescent waves giving the dominant contribution to the thermal correction and we find that they are much smaller than the sizes of the test bodies. T…
We extend the Lifshitz theory of the Casimir force to the case of two parallel magnetic metal plates possessing a spatially nonlocal dielectric response. By solving Maxwell equations in the configuration of an electromagnetic wave incident on the boundary plane of a magnetic metal semispace, the exact surface impedances are expressed in terms of its magnetic permeability and longitudinal and transverse dielectric functions. This allows application of the Lifshitz theory with reflection coefficients written via the surface impedances for calculation of the Casimir pressure between magnetic meta…
Achieving strong repulsive Casimir forces through engineered coatings can pave the way for micro- and nano-electromechanical applications where adhesive forces currently cause reliability issues. Here, we exploit Lifshitz theory to identify the requirements for repulsive Casimir forces in gyrotropic media for two limiting cases (ultra-strong gyroelectric and non-gyroelectric). We show that the origin of repulsive force in media with strong gyrotropy such as Weyl semi-metals arises from the giant interconversion of polarization of vacuum fluctuations.
In this article we compute the Casimir force between two finite-width mirrors at finite temperature, working in a simplified model in 1+1 dimensions. The mirrors, considered as dissipative media, are modeled by a continuous set of harmonic oscillators which in turn are coupled to an external environment at thermal equilibrium. The calculation of the Casimir force is performed in the framework of the theory of quantum open systems. It is shown that the Casimir interaction has two different contributions: the usual radiation pressure from vacuum, which is obtained for ideal mirrors without dissi…
The wedge geometry closed by a circular-cylindrical arc is a nontrivial generalization of the cylinder, which may have various applications. If the radial boundaries are not perfect conductors, the angular eigenvalues are only implicitly determined. When the speed of light is the same on both sides of the wedge, the Casimir energy is finite, unlike the case of a perfect conductor, where there is a divergence associated with the corners where the radial planes meet the circular arc. We advance the study of this system by reporting results on the temperature dependence for the conducting situati…
We study the consequences of dissipation in homogeneous media when the system is subject to a sudden change, thereby producing pairs of correlated quasi-particles with opposite momenta. We compute both the modifications of the spectrum, and those of the correlations. In particular, we compute the final coherence level, and identify the regimes where the state is non-separable. To isolate the role of dissipation, we first consider dispersive media and study the competition between the intensity of the jump which induces some coherence, and the temperature which reduces it. The contributions of …
The statistical mechanical approach to Casimir problems for dielectrics separated by a vacuum gap turns out to be compact and effective. A central ingredient of this method is the effect of interacting fluctuating dipole moments of the polarizable particles. At arbitrary temperature the path integral formulation of quantized particles, developed by Høye-Stell and others, is needed. At high temperature - the limit considered in the present paper - the classical theory is however sufficient. Our present theory is related to an idea put forward earlier by Jancovici and {Š}amaj (2004), namely to e…
The situation with the temperature corrections to the Casimir force between real metals of finite conductivity is reported. It is shown that the plasma dielectric function is well adapted to the Lifshitz formula and leads to reasonable results for real conductors. The Drude dielectric function which describes media with dissipation is found not to belong to the application range of the Lifshitz formula at nonzero temperature. For Drude metals the special modification of the zero-frequency term of this formula is suggested. The contradictory results on the subject in recent literature are analy…
Three-dimensional Casimir force between absorbing multilayer dielectrics
最近,在存在因果介质的电磁场的一维量子化方案中,研究了零温极限下介电和几何特性对色散和吸收多层板之间的Casimir力的影响[R.埃斯基韦尔-锡尔旺角Villarreal和G.H. Cocoletzi,Phys. Rev. More than forty years ago, Barash published a calculation of the full retarded Casimir-Lifshitz torque for planar birefringent media with arbitrary degrees of anisotropy. An independent theoretical confirmation has been lacking since. We report a systematic and transparent derivation of the torque between two media with both electric and magnetic birefringence. Our approach, based on an eigenmode decomposition of Maxwell's equations, generalizes Barash's result for electrically birefringent materials, and can be generalized to a wide range of anisotropic materials and finite thickness effects.
On the basis of macroscopic quantum electrodynamics and point-scattering techniques, we derive a closed expression for the Casimir-Polder force between a ground-state atom and a small magnetodielectric sphere in an arbitrary environment. In order to allow for the presence of both bodies and media, local-field corrections are taken into account. Our results are compared with the known van der Waals force between two ground-state atoms. To continuously interpolate between the two extreme cases of a single atom and a macroscopic sphere, we also derive the force between an atom and a sphere of var…
