We study the action on the Bruhat-Tits tree of unit groups of maximal orders in certain quaternion algebras over $\mathbb{F}_q(T)$ and discuss applications to arithmetic geometry and group theory.
We define a motive whose realizations afford modular forms (of arbitrary weight) on an indefinite division quaternion algebra. This generalizes work of Iovita--Spiess to odd weights in the spirit of Jordan--Livné. It also generalizes a construction of Scholl to indefinite division quaternion algebras.
We use a combinatorial result relating the discriminant of the cycle pairing on a weighted finite graph to the eigenvalues of its Laplacian to deduce a formula for the orders of component groups of Jacobians of modular curves arising from quaternion algebras over $\mathbb{F}_q(T)$ or $\mathbb{Q}$. Our formula over $\mathbb{Q}$ recovers a result of Jordan and Livné.
Suppose that $G$ is a simple reductive group over $\mathbf{Q}$, with an exceptional Dynkin type, and with $G(\mathbf{R})$ quaternionic (in the sense of Gross-Wallach). In a previous paper, we gave an explicit form of the Fourier expansion of modular forms on $G$ along the unipotent radical of the Heisenberg parabolic. In this paper, we give the Fourier expansion of the minimal modular form $θ_{Gan}$ on quaternionic $E_8$, and some applications. The $Sym^{8}(V_2)$-valued automorphic function $θ_{Gan}$ is a weight four, level one modular form on $E_8$, which has been studied by Gan. The applicat…
For a totally real number field $F$ and a nonarchimedean prime $\mathfrak{p}$ of $F$ lying above a prime number $p$ we introduce certain sheaf cohomology groups that intertwine the $\mathfrak{p}^{\infty}$-tower of a quaternionic Hilbert modular variety associated to a quaternion algebra $D$ over $F$ that is split at $\mathfrak{p}$ and a $p$-adically admissible representation of $\mbox{PGL}_2(F_{\mathfrak{p}})$. Applied to infinitesimal $p$-adic deformations of the local factor at $\mathfrak{p}$ of a cuspidal automorphic representation $π$ of $D^*(\mathbb{A})$ this yields a natural construction…
Suppose that $G$ is a simple adjoint reductive group over $\mathbf{Q}$, with an exceptional Dynkin type, and with $G(\mathbf{R})$ quaternionic (in the sense of Gross-Wallach). Then there is a notion of modular forms for $G$, anchored on the so-called quaternionic discrete series representations of $G(\mathbf{R})$. The purpose of this paper is to give an explicit form of the Fourier expansion of modular forms on $G$, along the unipotent radical $N$ of the Heisenberg parabolic $P = MN$ of $G$.
Let $D$ be a definite quaternion algebra over $\mathbb{Q}$ and $\mathcal{O}$ an Eichler order in $D$ of square-free level. We study distribution of the toric periods of algebraic modular forms of level $\mathcal{O}$. We focus on two problems: non-vanishing and sign changes. Firstly, under certain conditions on $\mathcal{O}$, we prove the non-vanishing of the toric periods for positive proportion of imaginary quadratic fields. This improves the known lower bounds toward Goldfeld's conjecture in some cases and provides evidence for similar non-vanishing conjectures for central values of twisted …
We present an explicit basis for orders of arbitrary level N>1 in definite rational quaternion algebras. These orders have applications to computations of spaces of elliptic and quaternionic modular forms.
Given a quaternionic form G of a p-adic classical group (p odd) we classify all cuspidal irreducible representations of G with coefficients in an algebraically closed field of characteristic different from p. We prove two theorems: At first: Every irreducible cuspidal representation of G is induced from a cuspidal type, i.e. from a certain irreducible representation of a compact open subgroup of G, constructed from a beta-extension and a cuspidal representation of a finite group. Secondly we show that two intertwining cuspidal types of G are up to equivalence conjugate under some element of G.
In this article, using methods from geometric analysis and theory of heat kernels, we derive qualitative estimates of automorphic cusp forms defined over quaternion algebras. Using which, we prove an average version of the holomorphic QUE conjecture. We then derive quantitative estimates of classical Hilbert modular cusp forms. This is a generalization of the results from [3] and [9] to higher dimensions.
We study arithmetic intersections on twisted (quaternionic) Hilbert modular surfaces and Shimura curves over a real quadratic field. Our first main result is the determination of the degree of the top arithmetic Todd class of an arithmetic twisted Hilbert modular surface. This quantity is then related to the arithmetic volume of a Shimura curve, via the arithmetic Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch theorem and the Jacquet-Langlands correspondence.
We develop a theory of modular forms on the groups $\mathrm{SO}(3,n+1)$, $n \geq 3$. This is very similar to, but simpler, than the notion of modular forms on quaternionic exceptional groups, which was initiated by Gross-Wallach and Gan-Gross-Savin. We prove the results analogous to those of earlier papers of the author on modular forms on exceptional groups, except now in the familiar setting of classical groups. Moreover, in the setting of $\mathrm{SO}(3,n+1)$, there is a family of absolutely convergent Eisenstein series, which are modular forms. We prove that these Eisenstein series have al…
We determine the quantum variance of a sequence of families of automorphic forms on a compact quotient arising from a non-split quaternion algebra. Our results compare to those obtained by Luo--Sarnak, Zhao, and Sarnak--Zhao on the modular curve, whose method required a cusp. Our method uses the theta correspondence to reduce the problem to the estimation of metaplectic Rankin--Selberg convolutions. We apply it here to the first non-split case.
We apply the theory of Bruhat-Tits trees to the study of optimal embeddings of two and three dimensional commutative orders into quaternion algebras. Specifically, we determine how many conjugacy classes of global Eichler orders in a quaternion algebra yield optimal representations of such orders. This completes the previous work by C. Maclachlan, who considered only Eichler orders of square free level and integral domains as sub-orders. The same technique is used in the second part of this work to compute local embedding numbers, extending previous results by J. Brzezinski.
This article has three goals. First, we generalize the result of Deuring and Serre on the characterization of supersingular locus of modular curves to all Shimura varieties given by totally indefinite quaternion algebras over totally real number fields. Second, we generalize the result of Ribet on arithmetic level raising to such Shimura varieties in the inert case. Third, as an application to number theory, we use the previous results to study the Selmer group of certain triple product motive of an elliptic curve, in the context of the Bloch--Kato conjecture.
We explore a natural action of Hecke operators acting on formal sums of optimal embeddings of real quadratic orders into Eichler orders. By associating an optimal embedding to its root geodesic on the corresponding Shimura curve, we can consider the signed intersection number of pairs of embeddings. Using the Hecke operators and the intersection pairing, we construct a generating series that is demonstrated to be a classical modular form of weight two.
We show that the completed Hecke algebra of $p$-adic modular forms is isomorphic to the completed Hecke algebra of continuous $p$-adic automorphic forms for the units of the quaternion algebra ramified at $p$ and $\infty$. This gives an affirmative answer to a question posed by Serre in a 1987 letter to Tate. The proof is geometric, and lifts a mod $p$ argument due to Serre: we evaluate modular forms by identifying a quaternionic double-coset with a fiber of the Hodge-Tate period map, and extend functions off of the double-coset using fake Hasse invariants. In particular, this gives a new proo…
We derive explicit isomorphisms between certain congruence subgroups of the Siegel modular group, the Hermitian modular group over an arbitrary imaginary-quadratic number field and the modular group over the Hurwitz quaternions of degree 2 and the discriminant kernels of special orthogonal groups SO 0 (2, n), n = 3, 4, 6. The proof is based on an application of linear algebra adapted to the number theoretical needs.
We define a notion of modular forms of half-integral weight on the quaternionic exceptional groups. We prove that they have a well-behaved notion of Fourier coefficients, which are complex numbers defined up to multiplication by $\pm 1$. We analyze the minimal modular form $Θ_{F_4}$ on the double cover of $F_4$, following Loke--Savin and Ginzburg. Using $Θ_{F_4}$, we define a modular form of weight $\frac{1}{2}$ on (the double cover of) $G_2$. We prove that the Fourier coefficients of this modular form on $G_2$ see the $2$-torsion in the narrow class groups of totally real cubic fields.
We extend our previous computations for the relative positions of branches of quaternions to the case of local fields of even characteristic. This is a key step to understand the set of maximal orders containing a given suborder, which is useful, for instance, to compute relative spinor images, thus solving the selectivity problem. In our previous work, the results where given in terms of the quadratic defect. In the present context, we introduce and characterize an analogous concept for Artin-Schreier extensions. It is no longer useful to restrict our attention to orders generated by pure qua…
Let $A$ be a quaternion algebra over a number field $F$, and $\mathcal{O}$ be an $O_F$-order of full rank in $A$. Let $K$ be a quadratic field extension of $F$ that embeds into $A$, and $B$ be an $O_F$-order in $K$. Suppose that $\mathcal{O}$ is a Bass order that is well-behaved at all the dyadic primes of $F$. We provide a necessary and sufficient condition for $B$ to be optimally spinor selective for the genus of $\mathcal{O}$. This partially generalizes previous results on optimal (spinor) selectivity by C. Maclachlan [Optimal embeddings in quaternion algebras. J. Number Theory, 128(10):285…
