We study the space of continuous $Z^d$-actions on the Cantor set, particularly questions on the existence and nature of actions whose isomorphism class is dense (Rohlin's property). Kechris and Rosendal showed that for $d=1$ there is an action on the Cantor set whose isomorphism class is residual. We prove in contrast that for $\geq 2$ every isomorphism class is meager; on the other hand, while generically an action has dense isomorphism class and the effective actions are dense, no effective action has dense isomorphism class. Thus for $d \geq 2$ conjugation on the space of actions is topologically transitive but one cannot construct a transitive point. Finally, we show that in the space of transitive and minimal actions the effective actions are nowhere dense, and in particular there are minimal actions that are not approximable by minimal SFTs.
We correct an error in the proof of the Rohlin-Abramov addition formula for free group actions and point out errors in the proof of Yuzvinskii's addition formula. It is not known if the latter are fixable.
This paper introduces Markov chains and processes over nonabelian free groups and semigroups. We prove a formula for the $f$-invariant of a Markov chain over a free group in terms of transition matrices that parallels the classical formula for the entropy a Markov chain. Applications include free group analogues of the Abramov-Rohlin formula for skew-product actions and Yuzvinskii's addition formula for algebraic actions.
For any countable group $Γ$ satisfying the ``weak Rohlin property'', and for any dynamical property, the set of $Γ$-actions with that property is either residual or meager. The class of groups with the weak Rohlin property includes each lattice $\integers^{\times{d}}$; indeed, all countable discrete amenable groups. For $Γ$ an arbitrary countable group, let $\actsp$ be the set of $Γ$-actions on the unit circle $Y$. We establish an Equivalence theorem by showing that a dynamical property is Baire/meager/residual in $\actsp$ if and only if it is Baire/meager/residual in the set of shift-invarian…
A nilpotent Cantor action is a minimal equicontinuous action $Φ\colon Γ\times \frak{X} \to \frak{X}$ on a Cantor set $\frak{X}$, where $Γ$ contains a finitely-generated nilpotent subgroup $Γ_0 \subset Γ$ of finite index. In this note, we show that these actions are distinguished among general Cantor actions: any effective action of a finitely generated group on a Cantor space, which is continuously orbit equivalent to a nilpotent Cantor action, must itself be a nilpotent Cantor action. As an application of this result, we obtain new invariants of nilpotent Cantor actions under continuous orbit…
In this article we study the centralizer of a minimal aperiodic action of a countable group on the Cantor set (an aperiodic minimal Cantor system). We show that any countable residually finite group is the subgroup of the centralizer of some minimal $\mathbb Z$ action on the Cantor set, and that any countable group is the subgroup of the normalizer of a minimal aperiodic action of an abelian countable free group on the Cantor set. On the other hand we show that for any countable group $G$, the centralizer of any minimal aperiodic $G$-action on the Cantor set is a subgroup of the centralizer of…
A Cantor action is a minimal equicontinuous action of a countably generated group G on a Cantor space X. Such actions are also called generalized odometers in the literature. In this work, we introduce two new conjugacy invariants for Cantor actions, the stabilizer limit group and the centralizer limit group. An action is wild if the stabilizer limit group is an increasing sequence of stabilizer groups without bound, and otherwise is said to be stable if this group chain is bounded. For Cantor actions by a finitely generated group G, we prove that stable actions satisfy a rigidity principle, a…
We prove that any countable non-amenable group G admits a free minimal amenable purely infinite action on the non-compact Cantor set. This answers a question of Kellerhals, Monod and Rørdam.
Using the notion of proper Cantor colorings we prove the following theorem. For any countably infinite group $Γ$, there exists a free continuous action $ζ: Γ\curvearrowright C$ on the Cantor set, which is universal in the following sense: for any free Borel action $α: Γ\curvearrowright X$ on the standard Borel space, there exists an injective Borel map $Θ_α: X\to C$ such that $Θ_α\circ α=ζ\circ Θ_α$. We extend our theorem for (nonfree) Borel $(Γ,Z)$-actions, where $Z$ is a uniformly recurrent subgroup.
In this paper we study conditions under which a free minimal $\mz^d$-action on the Cantor set is a topological extension of the action of $d$ rotations, either on the product $\mt^d$ of $d$ 1-tori or on a single 1-torus $\mt^1$. We extend the notion of {\it linearly recurrent} systems defined for $\mz$-actions on the Cantor set to $\mz^d$-actions and we derive in this more general setting, a necessary and sufficient condition, which involves natural combinatorial data associated with the action, allowing the existence of a rotation topological factor of one these two types.
Consider an arbitrary extension of a free $\mathbb Z^d$-action on the Cantor set. It is shown that it has dynamical asymptotic dimension at most $3^d - 1$.
We consider a minimal equicontinuous action of a finitely generated group $G$ on a Cantor set $X$ with invariant probability measure $μ$, and stabilizers of points for such an action. We give sufficient conditions under which there exists a subgroup $H$ of $G$ such that the set of points in $X$ whose stabilizers are conjugate to $H$ has full measure. The conditions are that the action is locally quasi-analytic and locally non-degenerate. An action is locally quasi-analytic if its elements have unique extensions on subsets of uniform diameter. The condition that the action is locally non-degene…
A group action has essential holonomy if the set of points with non-trivial holonomy has positive measure. If such an action is topologically free, then having essential holonomy is equivalent to the action not being essentially free, which means that the set of points with non-trivial stabilizer has positive measure. In this paper, we investigate the relation between the property of having essential holonomy and structure of the acting group for minimal equicontinuous actions on Cantor sets. We show that if such a group action is locally quasi-analytic and has essential holonomy, then every c…
The discriminant group of a minimal equicontinuous action of a group $G$ on a Cantor set $X$ is the subgroup of the closure of the action in the group of homeomorphisms of $X$, consisting of homeomorphisms which fix a given point. The stabilizer and the centralizer groups associated to the action are obtained as direct limits of sequences of subgroups of the discriminant group with certain properties. Minimal equicontinuous group actions on Cantor sets admit a classification by the properties of the stabilizer and centralizer direct limit groups. In this paper, we construct new families of exa…
We show that every minimal action of any finitely generated abelian group on the Cantor set is (topologically) orbit equivalent to an AF relation. As a consequence, this extends the classification up to orbit equivalence of minimal dynamical systems on the Cantor set to include AF relations and Z^d-actions.
We show that every minimal, free action of the group Z^2 on the Cantor set is orbit equivalent to an AF-relation. As a consequence, this extends the classification of minimal systems on the Cantor set up to orbit equivalence to include AF-relations, Z-actions and Z^2-actions.
In this paper, we consider minimal equicontinuous actions of discrete countably generated groups on Cantor sets, obtained from the arboreal representations of absolute Galois groups of fields. In particular, we study the asymptotic discriminant of these actions. The asymptotic discriminant is an invariant obtained by restricting the action to a sequence of nested clopen sets, and studying the isotropies of the enveloping group actions in such restricted systems. An enveloping (Ellis) group of such an action is a profinite group. A large class of actions of profinite groups on Cantor sets is gi…
Grigorchuk and Medynets recently announced that the topological full group of a minimal Cantor Z-action is amenable. They asked whether the statement holds for all minimal Cantor actions of general amenable groups as well. We answer in the negative by producing a minimal Cantor Z^2-action for which the topological full group contains a non-abelian free group.
We study amenable minimal Cantor systems of free groups arising from the diagonal actions of the boundary actions and certain Cantor systems. It is shown that every virtually free group admits continuously many amenable minimal Cantor systems whose crossed products are mutually non-isomorphic Kirchberg algebras in the UCT class (with explicitly determined K-theory). The technique developed in our study also enables us to compute the K-theory of certain amenable minimal Cantor systems. We apply it to the diagonal actions of the boundary actions and the products of the odometer transformations, …
In this paper, we study the actions of profinite groups on Cantor sets which arise from representations of Galois groups of certain fields of rational functions. Such representations are associated to polynomials, and they are called profinite iterated monodromy groups. We are interested in a topological invariant of such actions called the asymptotic discriminant. In particular, we give a complete classification by whether the asymptotic discriminant is stable or wild in the case when the polynomial generating the representation is quadratic. We also study different ways in which a wild asymp…
We study diagonal actions $φ:\mathbb{F}_2\curvearrowright\partial\mathbb{F}_2\times K$ on the Cantor set which are given by $φ_a=\partial_a\timesα,φ_b=\partial_b\timesβ$. Under some restrictions on $α,β$ we compute $K_*(C(\partial\mathbb{F}_2\times K)\rtimes_r\mathbb{F}_2)$. As an application in the case of $α$ is Denjoy homeomorphism of the Cantor set and $β=id$ we will show that $C(\partial\mathbb{F}_2\times K)\rtimes_r\mathbb{F}_2$ is Kirchberg algebra with $K_*(C(\partial\mathbb{F}_2\times K)\rtimes_r\mathbb{F}_2)=(\mathbb{Z}^\infty,\mathbb{Z}^\infty)$. Also we will check that $C^*$-crosse…
We give some examples of IFSs with overlap on the interval such that the semigroup action they give rise to has a minimal set homeomorphic to the Cantor set.
A solenoidal manifold is the inverse limit space of a tower of proper coverings of a compact manifold. In this work, we introduce new invariants for solenoidal manifolds, their asymptotic Steinitz orders and their prime spectra, and show they are invariants of the homeomorphism type. These invariants are formulated in terms of the monodromy Cantor action associated to a solenoidal manifold. To this end, we continue our study of invariants for minimal equicontinuous Cantor actions. We introduce the three types of prime spectra associated to such actions, and study their invariance properties un…
A group $Γ$ is said to be finitely non-co-Hopfian, or renormalizable, if there exists a self-embedding $φ\colon Γ\to Γ$ whose image is a proper subgroup of finite index. Such a proper self-embedding is called a renormalization for $Γ$. In this work, we associate a dynamical system to a renormalization $φ$ of $Γ$. The discriminant invariant ${\mathcal D}_φ$ of the associated Cantor dynamical system is a profinite group which is a measure of the asymmetries of the dynamical system. If ${\mathcal D}_φ$ is a finite group for some renormalization, we show that $Γ/C_φ$ is virtually nilpotent, where …
We survey, and extend, results on the adjoint action of the homeomorphism group $H(X)$ on the space of surjective continuous maps, $C_s(X)$, where $X$ is a Cantor set. We look also at the restriction of the action to various dynamically defined subsets of $C_s(X)$, e. g. the sets of topologically transitive maps, chain transitive maps, chain mixing maps, etc. In each case, we consider whether there exist elements with a dense conjugacy class and if so, what the generic elements look like.
The purpose of this note is twofold. In the first part we observe that two finitely generated non-amenable groups are quasi-isometric if and only if they admit topologically orbit equivalent Cantor minimal actions. In particular, free groups if different rank admit topologically orbit equivalent Cantor minimal actions unlike in the measurable setting. In the second part we introduce the measured orbit equivalence category of a Cantor minimal system and construct (in certain cases) a representation of this category on the category of finite-dimensional vector spaces. This gives rise to novel fu…
In this work, we investigate the dynamical and geometric properties of weak solenoids, as part of the development of a "calculus of group chains" associated to Cantor minimal actions. The study of the properties of group chains was initiated in the works of McCord 1965 and Fokkink and Oversteegen 2002, to study the problem of determining which weak solenoids are homogeneous continua. We develop an alternative condition for the homogeneity in terms of the Ellis semigroup of the action, then investigate the relationship between non-homogeneity of a weak solenoid and its discriminant invariant, w…
We show that the group of homeomorphisms of the Cantor set $H(K)$ has ample generics, that is, for every $m$ the diagonal conjugacy action $g\cdot(h_1,h_2,..., h_m)=(gh_1g^{-1},gh_2g^{-1},..., gh_mg^{-1})$ of $H(K)$ on $H(K)^m$ has a comeager orbit. This answers a question of Kechris and Rosendal. We show that the generic tuple in $H(K)^m$ can be taken to be the limit of a certain projective Fraisse family. We also present a proof of the existence of the generic homeomorphism of the Cantor set in the context of the projective Fraisse theory.
In this text, we prove then that any minimal effective dynamical system on a Cantor set $\mathcal{A}^{\mathbb{N}}$ can be simulated by a minimal $\mathbb{Z}^3$-SFT, in a sense that we explicit here. This notion is a generalization of simulation by factor and sub-action defined by Hochman.
In this note we consider dynamical systems $(X,G)$ on a Cantor set $X$ satisfying some mild technical conditions. The considered class includes, in particular, minimal and transitive aperiodic systems. We prove that two such systems $(X_1,G_1)$ and $(X_2,G_2)$ are orbit equivalent if and only if their full groups are isomorphic as abstract groups. This result is a topological version of the well-known Dye's theorem established originally for ergodic measure-preserving actions.
The AH conjecture relates the low-dimensional homology groups of a groupoid with the abelianization of its topological full group. We show that transformation groupoids of minimal actions of the infinite dihedral group on the Cantor set satisfy this conjecture. The proof uses Kakutani-Rokhlin partitions adapted to such systems.
For the free group $F_2$ acting in $S^{1}$, we will prove that if the minimal set for the action is not a Cantor set, then the action does not have the shadowing property. We will also construct an example, whose minimal set is a Cantor set, that it has the shadowing property.
We show that Cantor minimal $\mathbb{Z}\rtimes\mathbb{Z}_2$-systems and essentially free amenable odometers are almost finite. We also compute the homology groups of Cantor minimal $\mathbb{Z}\rtimes\mathbb{Z}_2$-systems and show that the associated transformation groupoids satisfy the HK conjecture if and only if the action is free.
We introduce the fundamental group ${\mathcal F}(\mathcal{R}_{G, ϕ})$ of a uniquely ergodic Cantor minimal $G$-system $\mathcal{R}_{G, ϕ}$ where $G$ is a countable discrete group. We compute fundamental groups of several uniquely ergodic Cantor minimal $G$-systems. We show that if $\mathcal{R}_{G, ϕ}$ arises from a free action $ϕ$ of a finitely generated abelian group, then there exists a unital countable subring $R$ of $\mathbb{R}$ such that $\mathcal{F}(\mathcal{R}_{G, ϕ})=R_{+}^\times$. We also consider the relation between fundamental groups of uniquely ergodic Cantor minimal $\mathbb{Z}^n…
The goal of the paper is to lay the foundation for the qualitative analogue of the classical, quantitative sparse graph limit theory. In the first part of the paper we introduce the qualitative analogues of the Benjamini-Schramm and local-global graph limit theories for sparse graphs. The natural limit objects are continuous actions of finitely generated groups on totally disconnected compact metric spaces. We prove that the space of weak equivalent classes of free Cantor actions is compact and contains a smallest element, as in the measurable case. We will introduce and study various notions …
We study full groups of minimal actions of countable groups by homeomorphisms on a Cantor space $X$, showing that these groups do not admit a compatible Polish group topology and, in the case of $\Z$-actions, are coanalytic non-Borel inside $\Homeo(X)$. We point out that the full group of a minimal homeomorphism is topologically simple. We also study some properties of the closure of the full group of a minimal homeomorphism inside $\Homeo(X)$.
In this note, we show that if $G$ is an amenable group acting on a dendrite $X$, then the restriction of $G$ to any minimal set $K$ is equicontinuous, and $K$ is either finite or homeomorphic to the Cantor set.
We show that every isometric action on a Cantor set is conjugate to an inverse limit of actions on finite sets; and that every isometric action by a finitely generated amenable group is residually finite.
We construct an uncountable family of transversely Cantor laminations of compact spaces defined by free minimal actions of solvable groups, which are not affable and whose orbits are not quasi-isometric to Cayley graphs.
Equationally compact subgroups of countable groups were introduced by Banaschewski. For all known cases the orbit closure of such a subgroup is a countable subset in the space of subgroups and has finite Cantor-Bendixson rank. We show that there exists a finitely generated group $Γ$ such that for any countable ordinal $α$ we have an equationally compact subgroup $H\subset Γ$ for which the Cantor-Bendixson rank of the orbit closure of $H$ equals to $α+2$. Then we give an explicite construction of continuum many equationally compact subgroups of $Γ$ such that the associated ergodic Bernoulli shi…
We construct a minimal topological action $\wp$ of a non-amenable group on a Cantor set $C$, which is non-uniquely ergodic and furthermore there exist ergodic invariant measures $μ_1$ and $μ_2$ such that $(\wp,C,μ_1)$ and $(\wp,C,μ_2)$ are not orbit equivalent measurable equivalence relations.
Bounded orbit injection equivalence is an equivalence relation defined on minimal free Cantor systems which is a candidate to generalize flip Kakutani equivalence to actions of the Abelian free groups on more than one generator. This paper characterizes bounded orbit injection equivalence in terms of a mild strengthening of Rieffel-Morita equivalence of the associated C*-crossed-product algebras. Moreover, we construct an ordered group which is an invariant for bounded orbit injection equivalence, and does not agrees with the K\_0 group of the associated C*-crossed-product in general. This new…
Let $X$ be a zero-dimensional compact metrizable space endowed with a strictly positive continuous Borel $σ$-additive measure $μ$ which is good in the sense that for any clopen subsets $U,V\subset X$ with $μ(U)<μ(V)$ there is a clopen set $W\subset V$ with $μ(W)=μ(U)$. We study $σ$-ideals with Borel base on $X$ which are invariant under the action of the group $H_μ(X)$ of measure-preserving homeomorphisms of $(X,μ)$, and show that any such $σ$-ideal $\mathcal I$ is equal to one of seven $σ$-ideals: $\{\emptyset\}$, $[X]^{\leω}$, $\mathcal E$, $\mathcal M\cap\mathcal N$, $\mathcal M$, $\mathcal…
We prove that for any countable group G there exists a free minimal continuous action of G on the Cantor set admitting an invariant Borel probability measure.
We study minimal $\mathbb{Z}^d$-Cantor systems and the relationship between their speedups, their collections of invariant Borel measures, their associated unital dimension groups, and their orbit equivalence classes. In the particular case of minimal $\mathbb{Z}^d$-odometers, we show that their bounded speedups must again be odometers but, contrary to the 1-dimensional case, they need not be conjugate, or even isomorphic, to the original.
We show that the (topological) full group of a minimal pseudogroup over the Cantor set satisfies various rigidity phenomena of topological dynamical and combinatorial nature. Our main result applies to its possible homomorphisms into other groups of homeomorphisms, and implies that arbitrary homomorphisms between the full groups of a vast class of pseudogroups must extend to continuous morphisms between pseudogroups (in particular giving rise to equivariant maps at the level of spaces). As applications, we obtain explicit obstructions to the existence of embeddings between full groups in terms…
Let X be a h-homogeneous zero-dimensional compact Hausdorff space, i.e. X is a Stone dual of a homogeneous Boolean algebra. Using the dual Ramsey theorem and a detailed combinatorial analysis of what we call stable collections of subsets of a finite set, we obtain a complete list of the minimal sub-systems of the compact dynamical system (Exp(Exp(X)),Homeo(X)), where Exp(X) stands for the hyperspace comprising the closed subsets of X equipped with the Vietoris topology. The importance of this dynamical system stems from Uspenskij's characterization of the universal ambit of G = Homeo(X). The r…
We introduce two new characterizations of Meyer sets. A repetitive Delone set in $\R^d$ with finite local complexity is topologically conjugate to a Meyer set if and only if it has $d$ linearly independent topological eigenvalues, which is if and only if it is topologically conjugate to a bundle over a $d$-torus with totally disconnected compact fiber and expansive canonical action. "Conjugate to" is a non-trivial condition, as we show that there exist sets that are topologically conjugate to Meyer sets but are not themselves Meyer. We also exhibit a diffractive set that is not Meyer, answerin…
Motivated by a question of Erdős, this paper considers questions concerning the discrete dynamical system on the 3-adic integers given by multiplication by 2. Let the 3-adic Cantor set consist of all 3-adic integers whose expansions use only the digits 0 and 1. The exception set is the set of 3-adic integers whose forward orbits under this action intersects the 3-adic Cantor set infinitely many times. It has been shown that this set has Hausdorff dimension 0. Approaches to upper bounds on the Hausdorff dimensions of these sets leads to study of intersections of multiplicative translates of Can…
Let $U$ and $V$ be open subsets of the Cantor set with finite disjoint complements, and let $h:U\to V$ be a homeomorphism with dense orbits. Building from the ideas of Herman, Putnam, and Skau, we show that the partial action induced by $h$ can be realized as the Vershik map on a Bratteli diagram, and that any two such diagrams are equivalent.
It is known that there is a comeagre set of mutually conjugate measure preserving homeomorphisms of Cantor space equipped with the coinflipping probability measure, i.e., Haar measure. We show that the generic measure preserving homeomorphism is moreover conjugate to all of its powers. It follows that the generic measure preserving homeomorphism extends to an action of $(\mathbb Q,+)$ by measure preserving homeomorphisms, and, in fact, to an action of the locally compact ring $\mathfrak A$ of finite adèles. Similarly, S. Solecki has proved that there is a comeagre set of mutually conjugate iso…
We consider finitely generated groups of real-analytic circle diffeomorphisms. We show that if such a group admits an exceptional minimal set (i.e., a minimal invariant Cantor set), then its Lebesgue measure is zero; moreover, there are only finitely many orbits of connected components of its complement. For the case of minimal actions, we show that if the underlying group is (algebraically) free, then the action is ergodic with respect to the Lebesgue measure. This provides first answers to questions due to É. Ghys, G. Hector and D. Sullivan.
