We study the stratum in the set of all quadratic differential systems $\dot{x}=P_2(x,y), \dot{y}=Q_2(x,y)$ with a center, known as the codimension-four case $Q_4$. It has a center and a node and a rational first integral. The limit cycles under small quadratic perturbations in the system are determined by the zeros of the first Poincaré-Pontryagin-Melnikov integral $I$. We show that the orbits of the unperturbed system are elliptic curves, and $I$ is a complete elliptic integral. Then using Picard-Fuchs equations and the Petrov's method (based on the argument principle), we set an upper bound of eight for the number of limit cycles produced from the period annulus around the center.
This paper is concerned with the bifurcation of limit cycles in general quadratic perturbations of quadratic codimension-four centers $Q_4$. Gavrilov and Iliev set an upper bound of {\it eight} for the number of limit cycles produced from the period annulus around the center. Based on Gavrilov-Iliev's proof, we prove in this paper that the perturbed system has at most five limit cycles which emerge from the period annulus around the center. We also show that there exists a perturbed system with three limit cycles produced by the period annulus of $Q_4$.
Let $f:M\to M$ be a dynamically coherent partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism whose center foliation has all its leaves compact. We prove that if the unstable bundle of $f$ is one-dimensional, then the volume of center leaves must be bounded in $M$.
We consider a partially hyperbolic C1-diffeomorphism f on a smooth compact manifold M with a uniformly compact f-invariant center foliation. We show that if the unstable bundle is one-dimensional and oriented, then the holonomy of the center foliation vanishes everywhere, the quotient space of the center foliation is a torus and f induces a hyperbolic automorphism on it, in particular, f is centrally transitive. We actually obtain further interesting results without restrictions on the unstable, stable and center dimension: we prove a kind of spectral decomposition for the chain recurrent set …
We propose a program for finding the cyclicity of period annuli of quadratic systems with centers of genus one. As a first step, we classify all such systems and determine the essential one-parameter quadratic perturbations which produce the maximal number of limit cycles. We compute the associated Poincare-Pontryagin-Melnikov functions whose zeros control the number of limit cycles. To illustrate our approach, we determine the cyclicity of the annuli of two particular reversible systems.
Adding small random parametric noise to an arc of diffeomophisms of a manifold of dimension 3, generically unfolding a codimension one quadratic homoclinic tangency q associated to a sectionally dissipative saddle fixed point p, we obtain not more than a finite number of physical probability measures, whose ergodic basins cover the orbits which are recurrent to a neighborhood of the tangency point $q$. This result is in contrast to the extension of Newhouse's phenomenon of coexistence of infinitely many sinks obtained by Palis and Viana in this setting. There is a similar result for the simple…
This paper continues the work contained in two previous papers, devoted to the study of the dynamical system generated by a delay differential equation that models leukemia. Here our aim is to identify degenerate Hopf bifurcation points. By using an approximation of the center manifold, we compute the first Lyapunov coefficient for Hopf bifurcation points. We find by direct computation, in some zones of the parameter space (of biological significance), points where the first Lyapunov coefficient equals zero. For these we compute the second Lyapunov coefficient, that determines the type of the …
We study codimension one foliations with singularities defined locally by Bott-Morse functions on closed oriented manifolds. We carry to this setting the classical concepts of holonomy of invariant sets and stability, and prove a stability theorem in the spirit of the local stability theorem of Reeb. This yields, among other things, a good topological understanding of the leaves one may have around a center-type component of the singular set, and also of the topology of its basin. The stability theorem further allows the description of the topology of the boundary of the basin and how the topo…
In this paper we perform the parameter-dependent center manifold reduction near the generalized Hopf (Bautin), fold-Hopf, Hopf-Hopf and transcritical-Hopf bifurcations in delay differential equations (DDEs). This allows us to initialize the continuation of codimension one equilibria and cycle bifurcations emanating from these codimension two bifurcation points. The normal form coefficients are derived in the functional analytic perturbation framework for dual semigroups (sun-star calculus) using a normalization technique based on the Fredholm alternative. The obtained expressions give explicit…
Let $X$ be a quadratic vector field with a center whose generic orbits are algebraic curves of genus one. To each $X$ we associate an elliptic surface (a smooth complex compact surface which is a genus one fibration). We give the list of all such vector fields and determine the corresponding elliptic surfaces.
We study bifurcation behavior in periodic perturbations of two-dimensional symmetric systems exhibiting codimension-two bifurcations with a double eigenvalue when the frequencies of the perturbation terms are small. We transform the periodically perturbed system to a simpler one which is a periodic perturbation of the normal form for codimension-two bifurcations with a double zero eigenvalue and symmetry, and apply the subharmonic and homoclinic Melnikov methods to analyze bifurcations occurring in the system. In particular, we show that there exist transverse homoclinic or heteroclinic orbits…
We consider quadratic three-dimensional differential systems having a Hopf singular point. We study the cyclicity when the singular point is a center on the center manifold using higher order developments of the Lyapunov constants. As a result, we make a chart of the cyclicity by establishing the lower bounds for several known systems in the literature, among them the Rossler, Lorenz and Moon-Rand systems. Moreover, we obtain an example of a jerk system for which is possible to bifurcate 12 limit-cycles from the center, which is a new lower bound for three-dimensional quadratic systems.
We apply the averaging theory of high order for computing the limit cycles of discontinuous piecewise quadratic and cubic polynomial perturbations of a linear center. These discontinuous piecewise differential systems are formed by two either quadratic, or cubic polynomial differential systems separated by a straight line. We compute the maximum number of limit cycles of these discontinuous piecewise polynomial perturbations of the linear center, which can be obtained by using the averaging theory of order $n$ for $n=1,2,3,4,5$. Of course these limit cycles bifurcate from the periodic orbits o…
We revisit the bifurcation theory of the Lotka-Volterra quadratic system \begin{eqnarray} X_0 :\left\{\begin{aligned} \dot{x}=& - y -x^2+y^2 ,\\ \dot{y}= &\;\;\;\;x - 2xy \end{aligned} \right. \end{eqnarray} with respect to arbitrary quadratic deformations. The system $X_0$ has a double center, which is moreover isochronous. We show that the deformed system $X_0$ can have at most two limit cycles on the finite plane, with possible distribution $(i,j)$, where $i+j\leq2$. Our approach is based on the study of pairs of bifurcation functions associated to the centers, expressed in terms of iterate…
In this paper we research global dynamics and bifurcations of planar piecewise smooth quadratic quasi--homogeneous but non-homogeneous polynomial differential systems. We present sufficient and necessary conditions for the existence of a center in piecewise smooth quadratic quasi--homogeneous systems. Moreover, the center is global and non-isochronous if it exists, which cannot appear in smooth quadratic quasi-homogeneous systems. Then the global structures of piecewise smooth quadratic quasi--homogeneous but non-homogeneous systems are studied. Finally we investigate limit cycle bifurcations …
In this work, we give a new proof of the classification of the Lotka-Volterra and Reversible foliations, originally given by Gautier. This new proof, involves an unified technique for both cases, using the theory of foliations. In addition, we obtain a linear family of elliptical foliations with a non-invariant tangency set.
The new necessary and sufficient affine invariant conditions for the existence and for determining the number of centers for general quadratic system are pointed out. These conditions correspond to the partition of 12-dimensional coefficient space of indicated system with respect to the number and the multiplicity of its finite critical points.
This paper deals with the period function of the reversible quadratic centers \begin{equation*} X_{\np}=-y(1-x)\partial_x+(x+Dx^2+Fy^2)\partial_y, \end{equation*} where $\np=(D,F)\in\R^2.$ Compactifying the vector field to $\Sc^2$, the boundary of the period annulus has two connected components, the center itself and a polycycle. We call them the inner and outer boundary of the period annulus, respectively. We are interested in the bifurcation of critical periodic orbits from the polycycle $\out_\np$ at the outer boundary. A critical period is an isolated critical point of the period function.…
In this paper we consider the unfolding of saddle-node \[ X= \frac{1}{xU_a(x,y)}\Big(x(x^μ-\varepsilon)\partial_x-V_a(x)y\partial_y\Big), \] parametrized by $(\varepsilon,a)$ with $\varepsilon\approx 0$ and $a$ in an open subset $A$ of $\mathbb R^α,$ and we study the Dulac time $\mathcal T(s;\varepsilon,a)$ of one of its hyperbolic sectors. We prove (Theorem A) that the derivative $\partial_s\mathcal T(s;\varepsilon,a)$ tends to $-\infty$ as $(s,\varepsilon)\to (0^+,0)$ uniformly on compact subsets of $A.$ This result is addressed to study the bifurcation of critical periods in the Loud's fami…
In this paper we introduce new methods to prove the finite cyclicity of some graphics through a triple nilpotent point of saddle or elliptic type surrounding a center. After applying a blow-up of the family, yielding a singular 3-dimensional foliation, this amounts to proving the finite cyclicity of a family of limit periodic sets of the foliation. The boundary limit periodic sets of these families were the most challenging, but the new methods are quite general for treating such graphics. We apply these techniques to prove the finite cyclicity of the graphic $(I_{14}^1)$, which is part of the…
In this paper, we generalize the Picard-Fuchs equation method to study the bifurcation of limit cycles of perturbed differential systems with two switching lines. We obtain the detailed expression of the corresponding first order Melnikov function which can be used to get the upper bound of the number of limit cycles for the perturbed system by using Picard-Fuchs equation. It is worth noting that we greatly simplify the computations and this method can be applied to study the number of limit cycles of other differential systems with two switching lines. Our results also show that the number of…
The classical Lyapunov-Poincaré center theorem assures the existence of a first integral for an analytic one-form near a center singularity in dimension two, provided that the first jet of the one-form is nondegenerate. The basic point is the existence of an analytic first integral for the given one-form. In this paper we consider generalizations for two main frameworks: (i) real analytic foliations of codimension one in higher dimension and (ii) singular holomorphic foliations in dimension two. All this is related to the problem of finding criteria assuring the existence of analytic first int…
The classification, up to a center-affinity, of the homogeneous quadratic differential systems defined on $\mathbb{R}^{3}$ that have at least a semisimple nonsingular derivation, is achieved. It is proved that there exist four affine-equivalence classes of such systems, only.
In this paper, we study the integrability and linearization of a class of quadratic quasi-analytic switching systems. We improve an existing method to compute the focus values and periodic constants of quasi-analytic switching systems. In particular, with our method, we demonstrate that the dynamical behaviors of quasi-analytic switching systems are more complex than that of continuous quasi-analytic systems, by showing the existence of six and seven limit cycles in the neighborhood of the origin and infinity, respectively, in a quadratic quasi-analytic switching system. Moreover, explicit con…
We consider the family of dehomogenized Loud's centers $X_μ=y(x-1)\partial_x+(x+Dx^2+Fy^2)\partial_y,$ where $μ=(D,F)\in\mathbb{R}^2,$ and we study the number of critical periodic orbits that emerge or dissapear from the polycycle at the boundary of the period annulus. This number is defined exactly the same way as the well-known notion of cyclicity of a limit periodic set and we call it criticality. The previous results on the issue for the family $\{X_μ,μ\in\mathbb{R}^2\}$ distinguish between parameters with criticality equal to zero (regular parameters) and those with criticality greater th…
In 1994, Jürgen Moser generalized Hénon's area-preserving quadratic map to obtain a normal form for the family of four-dimensional, quadratic, symplectic maps. This map has at most four isolated fixed points. We show that the bounded dynamics of Moser's six parameter family is organized by a codimension-three bifurcation, which we call a quadfurcation, that can create all four fixed points from none. The bounded dynamics is typically associated with Cantor families of invariant tori around fixed points that are doubly elliptic. For Moser's map there can be two such fixed points: this structure…
The classification, up to a center-affinity, of the homogeneous quadratic differential systems defined on $\mathbb{R}^{3}$ that have at least a semisimple derivation with one-dimensional kernel, is achieved. It is proved that there exist 35 families of affine equivalence classes of such systems.
In this paper, we give a positive answer to the open question: Can there exist 4 limit cycles in quadratic near-integrable polynomial systems? It is shown that when a quadratic integrable system has two centers and is perturbed by quadratic polynomials, it can generate at least 4 limit cycles with (3,1) distribution. The method of Melnikov function is used.
For $g\geq2$, $j=1,\dots,g$ and $n\geq g+j$ we exhibit infinitely many new rigid and extremal effective codimension $j$ cycles in $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,n}$ from the strata of quadratic differentials and projections of these strata under forgetful morphisms and show the same holds for $k$-differentials with $k\geq 3$ if the strata are irreducible. We compute the class of the divisors in the case of quadratic differentials which contain the first known examples of effective divisors on $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,n}$ with negative $ψ_i$ coefficients.
The restricted version of the Hilbert 16th problem for quadratic vector fields requires an upper estimate of the number of limit cycles through a vector parameter that characterizes the vector fields considered and the limit cycles to be counted. In this paper we give an upper estimate of the number of limit cycles of quadratic vector fields $"σ$--distant from centers and $\ka $-distant from singular quadratic vector fields" provided that the limit cycles are $"δ$--distant from singular points and infinity".
Moser derived a normal form for the family of four-dimensional, quadratic, symplectic maps in 1994. This six-parameter family generalizes Hénon's ubiquitous 2D map and provides a local approximation for the dynamics of more general 4D maps. We show that the bounded dynamics of Moser's family is organized by a codimension-three bifurcation that creates four fixed points---a bifurcation analogous to a doubled, saddle-center---which we call a quadfurcation. In some sectors of parameter space a quadfurcation creates four fixed points from none, and in others it is the collision of a pair of fixed …
