This paper deals with many-valued modal logics, based only on the necessity operator, over a residuated lattice. We focus on three basic classes, according to the accessibility relation, of Kripke frames: the full class of frames evaluated in the residuated lattice (and so defining the minimum modal logic), the ones evaluated in the idempotent elements and the ones evaluated in 0 and 1. We show how to expand an axiomatization, with canonical constants in the language, of a finite residuated lattice into one of the modal logic, for each one of the three basic classes of Kripke frames, over the very lattice. And we also give axiomatizations for the case of a finite MV chain but this time without canonical constants.
The present article studies nilpotent and Hamiltonian cancellative residuated lattices and their relationship with nilpotent and Hamiltonian lattice-ordered groups. In particular, results about lattice-ordered groups are extended to the domain of residuated lattices. The two key ingredients that underlie the considerations of this paper are the categorical equivalence between Ore residuated lattices and lattice-ordered groups endowed with a suitable modal operator; and Malcev's description of nilpotent groups of a given nilpotency class c in terms of a semigroup equation.
In this paper, we study logics of bounded distributive residuated lattices with modal operators considering $\Box$ and $\Diamond$ in a noncommutative setting. We introduce relational semantics for such substructural modal logics. We prove that any canonical logic is Kripke complete via discrete duality and canonical extensions. That is, we show that a modal extension of the distributive full Lambek calculus is the logic of its frames if its variety is closed under canonical extensions. After that, we establish a Priestley-style duality between residuated distributive modal algebras and topolog…
In an article dating back in 1992, Kosta Došen initiated a project of modal translations in substructural logics, aiming at generalizing the well-known Gödel-McKinsey-Tarski translation of intuitionistic logic into {\bf S4}. Došen's translation worked well for (variants of) {\bf BCI} and stronger systems ({\bf BCW}, {\bf BCK}), but not for systems below {\bf BCI}. Dropping structural rules results in logic systems without distribution. In this article, we show, via translation, that every substructural (indeed, every non-distributive) logic is a fragment of a corresponding sorted, residuated (…
In this work we study the decidability of a class of global modal logics arising from Kripke frames evaluated over certain residuated lattices, known in the literature as modal many-valued logics. We exhibit a large family of these modal logics which are undecidable, in contrast with classical modal logic and propositional logics defined over the same classes of algebras. This family includes the global modal logics arising from Kripke frames evaluated over the standard Lukasiewicz and Product algebras. We later refine the previous result, and prove that global modal Lukasiewicz and Product lo…
In this paper we study frame definability in finitely-valued modal logics and establish two main results via suitable translations: (1) in finitely-valued modal logics one cannot define more classes of frames than are already definable in classical modal logic (cf.~\citep[Thm.~8]{tho}), and (2) a large family of finitely-valued modal logics define exactly the same classes of frames as classical modal logic (including modal logics based on finite Heyting and \MV-algebras, or even \BL-algebras). In this way one may observe, for example, that the celebrated Goldblatt--Thomason theorem applies imm…
The aim of this paper is to propose a many-valued modal framework to formalize reasoning with both graded preferences and propositions, in the style of van Benthem et al.'s classical modal logics for preferences. To do so, we start from Bou et al.'s minimal modal logic over a finite and linearly ordered residuated lattice. We then define appropriate extensions on a multi-modal language with graded modalities, both for weak and strict preferences, and with truth-constants. Actually, the presence of truth-constants in the language allows us to show that the modal operators Box and Diamond of the…
This paper aims at providing a comprehensive solution to the archaic open problem: how to define semantics of three-valued modal logic with vivid intuitive picture, convincing philosophical justification as well as versatile practical usage. Based on an existing line of work concerned with investigating three-valued logic out of innovative angles of view, we adopt a detour approach to interpret three-valued logic from a four-valued perspective, which results in the invention of an universal and systematic methodology for developing, explaining as well as utilizing three-valued modal logic. We …
In this paper we consider the modal logic with both Box and Diamond arising fromKripke models with a crisp accessibility and whose propositions are valued over the stan-dard Godel algebra [0,1]G. We provide an axiomatic system extending the one from [3]for models with a valued accessibility with Dunn axiom from positive modal logics, andshow it is strongly complete with respect to the intended semantics. The axiomatizationsof the most usual frame restrictions are given too. We also prove that in the studied logicit is not possible to get Box as an abbreviation of Diamond, nor vice-versa, showi…
In 1988, Ivlev proposed four-valued non-deterministic semantics for modal logics in which the alethic T axiom holds good. Unfortunately, no completeness was proved. In previous work, we proved completeness for some Ivlev systems and extended his hierarchy, proposing weaker six-valued systems in which the T axiom was replaced by the deontic D axiom. Here, we eliminate both axioms, proposing even weaker systems with eight values. Besides, we prove completeness for those new systems. It is natural to ask if a characterization by finite ordinary (deterministic) logical matrices would be possible f…
The {\em tetravalent modal logic} ($\cal TML$) is one of the two logics defined by Font and Rius (\cite{FR2}) (the other is the {\em normal tetravalent modal logic} ${\cal TML}^N$) in connection with Monteiro's tetravalent modal algebras. These logics are expansions of the well--known {\em Belnap--Dunn's four--valued logic} that combine a many-valued character (tetravalence) with a modal character. In fact, $\cal TML$ is the logic that preserve degrees of truth with respect to tetravalent modal algebras. As Font and Rius observed, the connection between the logic $\cal TML$ and the algebras is…
We study public announcement operators in the context of standard Gödel modal logic as introduced by Caicedo and Rodriguez. Over that base logic, admitting a natural semantics over [0,1]-valued generalizations of modal Kripke models, we exhibit three possible semantic interpretations of the public announcement operator, all equivalent in a classical setting, and show that these logics are all different in terms of expressive strength. We provide partial completeness results for these logics via Hilbert-style calculi.
Ivlev's pioneering work started in the 1970's showed a new and promissory way in the study of modal logic from the perspective of many-valued logics. Continuing our previous work on Ivlev-like non-normal modal logics with non-deterministic semantics, we present in this paper tableau systems for Tm, S4m and S5m, the non-normal versions of T, S4 and S5, respectively, as well as for their corresponding first-order extensions Tm*, S4m* and S5m*.
This paper continues the investigation of the logic of competing theories, be they scientific, social, political etc. We introduce a many-valued, multi-type modal language which we endow with relational semantics based on enriched reflexive graphs, inspired by Ploščica's representation of general lattices. We axiomatize the resulting many-valued, non-distributive modal logic of these structures and prove a completeness theorem. We illustrate the application of this logic through a case study in which we model competition among interacting political promises and social demands within an arena o…
We introduce a complete many-valued semantics for basic normal lattice-based modal logic. This relational semantics is grounded on many-valued formal contexts from Formal Concept Analysis. We discuss an interpretation and possible applications of this logical framework for categorization theory to the formal analysis of multi-market competition.
The one-variable fragment of any first-order logic may be considered as a modal logic, where the universal and existential quantifiers are replaced by a box and diamond modality, respectively. In several cases, axiomatizations of algebraic semantics for these logics have been obtained: most notably, for the modal counterparts S5 and MIPC of the one-variable fragments of first-order classical logic and intuitionistic logic, respectively. Outside the setting of first-order intermediate logics, however, a general approach is lacking. This paper provides the basis for such an approach in the setti…

We introduce a complete many-valued semantics for two normal lattice-based modal logics. This semantics is based on reflexive many-valued graphs. We discuss an interpretation and possible applications of this logical framework in the context of the formal analysis of the interaction between (competing) scientific theories.
We introduce a~paraconsistent modal logic $\mathbf{K}\mathsf{G}^2$, based on Gödel logic with coimplication (bi-Gödel logic) expanded with a De Morgan negation $\neg$. We use the logic to formalise reasoning with graded, incomplete and inconsistent information. Semantics of $\mathbf{K}\mathsf{G}^2$ is two-dimensional: we interpret $\mathbf{K}\mathsf{G}^2$ on crisp frames with two valuations $v_1$ and $v_2$, connected via $\neg$, that assign to each formula two values from the real-valued interval $[0,1]$. The first (resp., second) valuation encodes the positive (resp., negative) information th…

In this paper, we provide simplified semantics for the logic K45(G), i.e. the many-valued Godel counterpart of the classical modal logic K45. More precisely, we characterize K45(G) as the set of valid formulae of the class of possibilistic Godel Kripke Frames <W,π> where W is a non-empty set of worlds and π: W \to [0, 1] is a possibility distribution on W.
Justification logics are special kinds of modal logics which provide a framework for reasoning about epistemic justifications. For this, they extend classical boolean propositional logic by a family of necessity-style modal operators "t:", indexed over t by a corresponding set of justification terms, which thus explicitly encode the justification for the necessity assertion in the syntax. With these operators, one can therefore not only reason about modal effects on propositions but also about dynamics inside the justifications themselves. We replace this classical boolean base with Gödel logi…
We further develop the paraconsistent Gödel modal logic. In this paper, we consider its version endowed with Kripke semantics on $[0,1]$-valued frames with two fuzzy relations $R^+$ and $R^-$ (degrees of trust in assertions and denials) and two valuations $v_1$ and $v_2$ (support of truth and support of falsity) linked with a De Morgan negation $\neg$. We demonstrate that it \emph{does not} extend Gödel modal logic and that $\Box$ and $\lozenge$ are not interdefinable. We also show that several important classes of frames are $\birelKGsquare$ definable (in particular, crisp, mono-relational, a…
It is a classic result in modal logic that the category of modal algebras is dually equivalent to the category of descriptive frames. The latter are Kripke frames equipped with a Stone topology such that the binary relation is continuous. This duality generalizes the celebrated Stone duality. Our goal is to further generalize descriptive frames so that the topology is an arbitrary compact Hausdorff topology. For this, instead of working with the boolean algebra of clopen subsets of a Stone space, we work with the ring of continuous real-valued functions on a compact Hausdorff space. The main n…
