We study quantum transport in honeycomb lattice ribbons with either armchair or zigzag edges. The ribbons are coupled to semi-infinite linear chains serving as the input and output leads and we use a tight-binding Hamiltonian with nearest-neighbor hops. For narrow ribbons we find transmission gaps for both types of edges. The center of the gap is at the middle of the band in ribbons with armchair edges. This symmetry is due to a property satisfied by the matrices in the resulting linear problem. In ribbons with zigzag edges the gap center is displaced to the right of the middle of the band. We also find transmission oscillations and resonances within the transmitting region of the band for both types of edges. Extending the length of a ribbon does not affect the width of the transmission gap, as long as the ribbon's length is longer than a critical value when the gap can form. Increasing the width of the ribbon, however, changes the width of the gap. In armchair edges the gap is not well-defined because of the appearance of transmission resonances while in zigzag edges the gap width systematically shrinks as the width of the ribbon is increased. We also find only evanescent waves within the gap and both evanescent and propagating waves in the transmitting regions.
This paper presents electronic spectra of zigzag and armchair graphene nanoribbons calculated within the tight-binding model for pi-electrons. Zigzag and armchair nanoribbons of different edge geometries are considered, with surface perturbation taken into account. The properties of surface states are discussed on the basis of their classification into Tamm states and Shockley states. In armchair nanoribbons surface states are shown to close the energy gap at the Dirac point for certain edge geometries.
The edges of nanoscopic objects determine most of their properties. For this reason the edges of honeycomb carbon--always considered either zigzag- or armchair-like--need special attention. In this report we provide experimental evidence confirming a previous unexpected prediction: zigzag is a metastable edge, as its planar reconstruction lowers energy and forms the most stable graphene edge. Our evidence is based on re-analyzing a recent experiment. Since the reconstructed edge, along with other unconventional edges we discuss, has distinct chemical properties, this discovery urges for care i…
Interlayer Conductance in the Armchair Nanotube -- Zigzag Graphene Ribbon Parallel Contact: Theoretical Proposal of Detection of Wavefunction Growing from the Edge to the Center in the Graphene Ribbon
The presence of structure-dependent edge states of graphite is revealed by both ambient- and ultra-highvacuum- (UHV) scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) / scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) observations. On a hydrogenated zigzag (armchair) edge, bright spots are (are not) observed together with (SQRT(3) by SQRT(3))R30 superlattice near the Fermi level (V_S = −30 mV for a peak of the local density of states (LDOS)) under UHV, demonstrating that a zigzag edge is responsible for the edge states, although there is no appreciable difference between as-prepared zigzag and armchair edges in …
We report the one-electron spectrum and eigenstates of infinite achiral and chiral $(2m,m)$ carbon nanotubes found by using the analytic solution to the Schrödinger equation for the tight-binding Hückel-type Hamiltonian. With the help of matching the wave functions on the interfaces between the regions, where electrons have different site energies, we find and compare the transmission coefficients for zigzag, armchair and chiral nanotubes subjected to the action of an applied step-like potential. The correspondence between the nanotube band structure and the energy dependence of the transmissi…
We study the influence of ripple waves originating from the electromechanical effects on spin relaxation caused by electromagnetic fields in armchair and zigzag graphene nanoribbons (GNRs). By utilizing analytical expressions supported by numerical simulations, we show that it is possible to tune the spin flip behaviors ON and OFF due to ripple waves in GNRs for potential applications in straintronic devices. This finding is similar to recently made observations on the design of spintronic devices in III-V semiconductor quantum dots, where the sign change in the effective Land$\mathrm{\acute{e…
In semiconducting armchair graphene ribbons a chiral lattice deformation can induce pairs of topological gap states with opposite energies. Near the critical value of the deformation potential these kink and antikink states become almost degenerate with zero energy and have a fractional charge one-half. Such a semiconducting armchair ribbon represents a one-dimensional topological insulator with nearly zero energy end states. Using data collapse of numerical results we find that the shape of the kink displays an anomalous power-law dependence on the width of the local lattice deformation. We s…
We investigate the effects of external electric fields on the electronic properties of bilayer armchair graphene nano-ribbons. Using atomistic simulations with Tight Binding calculations and the Non-equilibrium Green function formalism, we demonstrate that (i) in semi-metallic structures, vertical fields impact more effectively than transverse fields in terms of opening larger bandgap, showing a contrary phenomenon compared to that demonstrated in previous studies in bilayer zigzag graphene nano-ribbons; (ii) in some semiconducting structures, if transverse fields just show usual effects as in…
We consider the end states of a half-filled rectangular armchair graphene ribbon (RAGR) in a staggered potential. Taking electron-electron interactions into account we find that, as the strength of the staggered potential varies, three types of couplings between the end states can occur: antiferromagnetic without or with spin splitting, and paramagnetic without spin-splitting. We find that a spin-splitting is present only in the staggered potential region $0<Δ<Δ_c$. The transition from the antiferromagnetic state at $Δ=0$ to the paramagnetic state goes through an intermediate spin-split antife…
We explore the electronic structure, orbital character and topological aspect of a monolayer MoS$_2$ nanoribbon using tight-binding (TB) and low-energy (${\bm k}\cdot{\bm p} $) models. We obtain a mid-gap edge mode in the zigzag ribbon of monolayer MoS$_2$, which can be traced back to the topological properties of the bulk band structure. Monolayer MoS$_2$ can be considered as a valley Hall insulator. The boundary conditions at armchair edges mix the valleys on the edges, and a gap is induced in the edge modes. The spin-orbit coupling in the valence band reduces the hybridization of the bulk s…
We address electron transport in honeycomb lattice ribbons with armchair edges attached to two semi-infinite one-dimensional metallic electrodes within the tight-binding framework. Here we present numerically the conductance-energy and current-voltage characteristics as functions of the length and width of the ribbons. Our theoretical results predict that for a ribbon with much smaller length and width, so-called a nanoribbon, a gap in the conductance spectrum appears across the energy E=0. While, this gap decreases gradually with the increase of the size of the ribbon, and eventually it almos…
Properties of bulk and boundaries of materials can, in general, be quite different, both for topological and non-topological reasons. One of the simplest boundary problems to pose is the tight-binding problem of noninteracting electrons on a finite honeycomb lattice. Despite its simplicity, the problem is quite rich and directly related to the physics of graphene. We revisit this long-studied problem and present an analytical derivation of the electron spectrum and wave functions for graphene rectangular derivatives. We provide an exact analytical description of extended and localized states, …
We have investigated, using effective mass approach (EMA), magnetic properties of a one-dimensional electron gas in graphene armchair ribbons when the electrons of occupy only the lowest conduction subband. We find that magnetic properties of the one-dimensional electron gas may depend sensitively on the width of the ribbon. For ribbon widths $L_x=3Ma_0$, a critical point separates ferromagnetic and paramagnetic states while for $L_x=(3M+1)a_0$ paramagnetic state is stable ($M$ is an integer and $a_{0}$ is the length of the unit cell). These width-dependent properties are a consequence of eige…
Based on a tight-binding approximation, we present analytical solutions for the wavefunction and propagation velocity of an electron in armchair graphene ribbons. The derived expressions are used for computing the transmission coefficients through step-like and barrier-like potentials. Our analytical solutions predict a new kind of transmission resonances for one-mode propagation in semiconducting ribbons. Contrary to the Klein paradox in graphene, this approach shows that backscattering for gapless mode is possible. In consistence with a higher order $\bf{k\cdot p}$ method, the backscattering…
Characterized by zigzag and armchair boundaries, the narrow ribbons display the very different characteristics in Hall conductivities. It is shown that the multi-band-crossings occur in the energy spectrum for armchair ribbons, and the number of them depends on the width of ribbons. Theoretically, it is predicated that the conductivities exhibit drastic sign reversals for narrow ribbons as the Fermi energy sweep over the band-crossings. A new classification of armchair ribbons is suggested based on the emergence of a flat band in the energy spectrum only for odd armchair ribbons. The evolution…
As the three-dimensional analogs of graphene, Weyl semimetals display signatures of chiral anomaly which arises from charge pumping between the lowest chiral Landau levels of the Weyl nodes in the presence of parallel electric and magnetic fields. In this work, we study the pseudo chiral anomaly and its transport signatures in graphene ribbon with zigzag edges. Here "pseudo" refers to the case where the inverse of width of zigzag graphene ribbon plays the same role as magnetic field in three-dimensional Weyl semimetals. The valley chiral bands in zigzag graphene ribbons can be introduced by ed…
The fundamental question of how chirality affects the electronic coupling of a nanotube to metal contacts is important for the application of nanotubes as nanowires. We show that metallic-zigzag nanotubes are superior to armchair nanotubes as nanowires, by modeling the metal-nanotube interface. More specifically, we show that as a function of coupling strength, the total electron transmission of armchair nanotubes increases and tends to be pinned close to unity for a metal with Fermi wave vector close to that of gold. In contrast, the total transmission of zigzag nanotubes increases to the max…
We study the conductance of graphene nanoribbons with long-range disorder. Due to the absence of intervalley scattering from the disorder potential, time-reversal symmetry (TRS) can be effectively broken even without a magnetic field, depending on the type of ribbon edge. Even though armchair edges generally mix valleys, we show that metallic armchair nanoribbons possess a hidden pseudovalley structure and effectively broken TRS. In contrast, semiconducting armchair nanoribbons inevitably mix valleys and restore TRS. As a result, in strong disorder metallic armchair ribbons exhibit a perfectly…
We propose a mechanical granular graphene obtained by replacing the carbon atoms with macroscopic spherical stainless steel beads in contact. The experimental measured dispersion relation is presented, in conjunction with evidence of the Dirac points. In addition, wave propagation along the zigzag and a robust turning effect of edge waves from the zigzag to the armchair boundary is experimentally revealed, even in the absence of a full band gap for bulk modes. Our work shows that mechanical granular graphene can serve as an excellent experimental platform to study novel Dirac, topological and …
Using density functional theory and non-equilibrium Greens function technique, we performed theoretical investigations on the transport properties of several ZAZ SiNRs junctions,a similar kind of silicene molecules junction combined by zigzag and armchair silicene nanoribbons. It is found that the differential conductances of the three systems decrease with an order of 5-ZAZ>4-ZAZ>3-ZAZ.Particularly,the Negative differential resistance can be observed within certain bias voltage range only in 3-ZAZ SiNRs. In order to elucidate the mechanism the NDR behavior, the transmission spectra and molecu…
We study the edge magnetization of bilayer graphene ribbons with zigzag edges. The presence of flat edge-state bands at the Fermi energy of undoped bilayer, which gives rise to a strong peak in the density of states, makes bilayer ribbons magnetic at the edges even for very small on-site electronic repulsion. Working with the Hubbard model in the Hartree Fock approximation we show that the magnetic structure in bilayer ribbons with zigzag edges is ferromagnetic along the edge, involving sites of the two layers, and antiferromagnetic between opposite edges. It is also shown that this magnetic s…
A graphene nano-ribbon with armchair edges is known to have no edge state. However, if the nano-ribbon is in the quantum spin Hall (QSH) state, then there must be helical edge states. By folding a graphene ribbon to a ring and threading it by a magnetic flux, we study the persistent charge and spin currents in the tight-binding limit. It is found that, for a broad ribbon, the edge spin current approaches a finite value independent of the radius of the ring. For a narrow ribbon, inter-edge coupling between the edge states could open the Dirac gap and reduce the overall persistent currents. Furt…
Finite-length armchair graphene nanoribbons can behave as one dimensional topological materials, that may show edge states in their zigzag-terminated edges, depending on their width and termination. We show here a full solution of Tight-Binding graphene rectangles of any length and width that can be seen as either finite-length armchair or zigzag ribbons. We find exact analytical expressions for both bulk and edge eigen-states and eigen-energies. We write down exact expressions for the Coulomb interactions among edge states and introduce a Hubbard-dimer model to analyse the emergence and featu…
On the basis of first principles calculations, we report energy estimated to cut a graphene sheet into nanoribbons of armchair and zigzag configurations. Our calculations show that the energy required to cut a graphene sheet into zigzag configuration is higher than that of armchair configuration by an order of 0.174 eV. Thus, a control over the threshold energy might be helpful in designing an experiment for cutting a graphene sheet into smooth edged armchair or zigzag configurations.
It is known that zigzag graphene edge is able to support edge states: there is a non-dispersive single-electron band localized near the zigzag edge. However, it is generally believed that no edge states exist near the armchair edge. In this paper we re-examine this notion. It is demonstrated that while, indeed, the pristine armchair edge does not support any localized states, they do appear if the edge is subjected to suitable modifications (e.g. chemical functionalization). We explicitly present two types of the edge modification which support the localized states. Unlike zigzag edge states, …
We combine density-functional theory and the nonequilibrium Green's function method to study the thermal conductance of graphene nanoribbons with armchair and zigzag edges. Zigzag ribbons have higher thermal conductance than armchair ribbons of comparable widths due to an anisotropy in phonon dispersion for graphene nanoribbons: low-frequency bands in zigzag ribbons are more dispersive than those in armchair ribbons. The edges with and without hydrogen-passivation modify the atomic structure and ultimately influence the phonon thermal transport differently for the two ribbon types.
We theoretically investigate effect of a transverse electric field generated by side gates and a vertical electric field generated by top, back gates on energy bands and transport properties of zigzag bilayer graphene ribbons (Bernal stacking). Using atomistic Tight Binding calculations and Green function formalism we demonstrate that bandgap is opened when either field is applied and even enlarged under simultaneous influence of the two fields. Interestingly, although vertical electric fields are widely used to control bandgap in bilayer graphene, here we show that transverse fields exhibit m…
We study the interaction effects on the ground state of nanographite ribbons with zigzag edges. Within the mean-field approximation, we found that there are two possible phases: the superconducting (SC) phase and the excitonic insulator (EI). The two phases are separated by a first-order transition point. After taking into account the low-lying fluctuations around the mean-field solutions, the SC phase becomes a spin liquid phase with one gapless charge mode. On the other hand, all excitations in the EI phase, especially the spin excitations, are gapped.
Conductance fluctuations produced by the presence of disorder in zigzag and armchair graphene nanoribbons are studied. We show that quantum transport in zigzag nanoribbons takes place via edge states which are exponentially localized, as in the standard Anderson localization problem, whereas for armchair nanoribbons the symmetry of the graphene sublattices produces anomalous localization, or delocalization. We show that these two different electron localizations lead to significant differences of the conductance statistics between zigzag and armchair nanoribbons. In particular, armchair nanori…
We explore electron transport properties in honeycomb lattice ribbons with zigzag edges coupled to two semi-infinite one-dimensional metallic electrodes. The calculations are based on the tight-binding model and the Green's function method, which numerically compute the conductance-energy and current-voltage characteristics as functions of the lengths and widths of the ribbons. Our numerical results predict that for such a ribbon an energy gap always appears in the conductance spectrum across the energy E=0. With the increase of the size of the ribbon, the gap gradually decreases but it never …
Spin excitation in a nano-graphite ribbon with zigzag edges is investigated theoretically. Due to the strongly localized nature of the states near Fermi energy, the effective Hamiltonian for the low energy physics is given by Heisenberg Hamiltonian with the nearest neighbor exchange coupling. The action corresponding to the effective Hamiltonian is mapped to that of the O(3) nonlinear sigma model. It is shown that the spin excitation has a gap when the number of the zigzag lines is even, whereas the excitation becomes gapless in case of the odd number of the zigzag lines.
Using semiclassical Boltzmann equation we have studied theoretically an effect of a direct current (DC) generation in undoped armchair carbon nanotube (CN) by mixing two coherent electromagnetic waves with commensurate frequencies i.e omega and 2 omega . We compared the results of the armchair with that of the zigzag carbon nanotubes for the same conditions (i.e. when the normalized current is plotted against the amplitude). Quantitatively they agree with each other except that the absolute value of the peaks of the current for zigzag is about 1.1 times that of the armchair. We noticed that th…
Zigzag edges of neutral armchair-oriented Graphene Nano-Ribbons show states strongly localized at those edges. They behave as free radicals that can capture electrons during processing, increasing ribbon's stability. Thus, charging and its consequences should be investigated.Total energy calculations of finite ribbons using spin polarized Density Functional Theory (DFT) show that ribbon's charging is feasible. Energies for Pariser-Parr-Pople (PPP) model Hamiltonian are compatible with DFT allowing the study of larger systems. Results for neutral ribbons indicate: i) the fundamental gap of spin…
The insulating magnetic phase in graphene zigzag ribbons, predicted both by density functional and mean field Hubbard model calculations, is described without additional approximations with a BCS wave function of two phase-locked condensates of spin-polarized electron-hole pairs. The associated order parameter is the spin dipole operator that features both magnetic and electric order and accounts for the spin-resolved ferroelectricity of the system. Each condensate is associated to a spin-dependent dipole and their relative phase locking sets the total electric dipole and total magnetization e…
Based on atomistic simulations, the nonlinear elastic properties of monolayer graphene nanoribbons under quasistatic uniaxial tension are predicted, emphasizing the effect of edge structures (armchair and zigzag, without and with hydrogen passivation). The results of atomistic simulations are interpreted within a theoretical framework of thermodynamics, which enables determination of the nonlinear functions for the strain-dependent edge energy and the hydrogen adsorption energy, for both zigzag and armchair edges. Due to the edge effects, the initial Young's modulus of graphene nanoribbons und…
The honeycomb lattice in the cylinder geometry with zigzag edges, bearded edges, zigzag and bearded edges (zigzag-bearded), and armchair edges are studied. The tight-binding model with nearest-neighbor hoppings is used. Edge states are obtained analytically for these edges except the armchair edges. It is shown, however, that edge states for the armchair edges exist when the the system is anisotropic. These states have not been known previously. We also find strictly localized states, uniformly extended states and states with macroscopic degeneracy.
Boundary conditions for the two-dimensional fermions in ribbons of the hexagonal lattice are studied in the dice model whose energy spectrum in infinite system consists of three bands with one completely flat band of zero energy. Like in graphene the regular lattice terminations are of the armchair and zigzag types. However, there are four possible zigzag edge terminations in contrast to graphene where only one type of zigzag termination is possible. Determining the boundary conditions for these lattice terminations, the energy spectra of pseudospin-1 fermions in dice model ribbons with zigzag…
The field screening effect on the electronic and field-emission properties of zigzag graphene nanoribbons (ZGNRs) has been studied using first-principles calculations. We have systematically investigated the effect of inter-ribbon distance and ribbon width on the work function, field enhancement factor, band gap and edge magnetism of zigzag graphene nanoribbons (ZGNRs). It is found that the work function of ZGNRs increases rapidly as the inter-ribbon distance Dx increases, which is caused by the positive dipole at the edge of the ribbon. For a given Dx, the work function of ZGNRs decreases as …
The electron-phonon matrix elements relevant to the Raman intensity and Kohn anomaly of the G band are calculated by taking into account the effect of the edge of graphene. The analysis of the pseudospin reveals that the longitudinal optical phonon mode undergoes a strong Kohn anomaly for both the armchair and zigzag edges, and that only the longitudinal (transverse) optical phonon mode is a Raman active mode near the armchair (zigzag) edge. The Raman intensity is enhanced when the polarization of the incident laser light is parallel (perpendicular) to the armchair (zigzag) edge. This asymmetr…
A graphene nanoribbon with zigzag edges has a gapped magnetic ground state with an antiferromagnetic inter-edge superexchange interaction. We present a theory based on asymptotic properties of the Dirac-model ribbon wavefunction which predicts $W^{-2}$ and $W^{-1}$ ribbon-width dependencies for the superexchange interaction strength and the charge gap respectively. We find that, unlike the case of conventional atomic scale superexchange, opposite spin-orientations on opposite edges of the ribbon are favored by both kinetic and interaction energies.
We report a thorough study of the reducibility of edge correlation effects in graphene to much-simplified effective models for the edge states. The latter have been used before in specially tailored geometries. By a systematic investigation of corrections due to the bulk states in second order perturbation theory, we show that the reduction to pure edge state models is well-justified in general geometries. The framework of reduced models discussed here enables the study of non-mean-field correlation physics for system sizes far beyond the reach of conventional methods, such as, e.g., quantum M…
We investigate the effects of Rashba spin-orbit interactions on the electronic band-structure and corresponding wave-functions of graphene. By exactly solving a tight-binding model Hamiltonian we obtain the expected splitting of the bands -due to the SU(2) spin symmetry breaking- that is accompanied by the appearance of additional Dirac points. These points are originated by valence-conduction band crossings. By introducing a convenient gauge transformation we study a model for zigzag nanoribbons with RSO interactions. We show that the RSO interactions lifts the quasi-degeneracy of the edge ba…
We calculate the band structure and the conductance of periodic corrugated graphene nanoribbons within the framework of the tight-binding $p$-orbital model. We consider corrugated structures based on host ribbons with armchair and zigzag edges and three different types of corrugations (armchair edges, zigzag edges as well as a rectangular corrugation). We demonstrate that for armchair host ribbons, depending on the type of corrugation, a band gap or low-velocity minibands appear near the charge neutrality point. For higher energies the allowed Bloch state bands become separated by mini-stopban…
A study of the effect of unscreened Coulomb interactions on the quantum spin Hall (QSH) phase of finite-width neutral zigzag graphene ribbons is presented. By solving a tight-binding Hamiltonian that includes the intrinsic spin-orbit interaction (I-SO), exact expressions for band-structures and edge-states wavefunctions are obtained. These analytic results, supported by tight-binding calculations, show that chiral spin-filtered edge states are composed of localized and damped oscillatory wavefunctions, reminiscent of the ones obtained in armchair ribbons. The addition of long-range Coulomb int…
Quantum size effects in armchair graphene nano-ribbons (AGNR) with hydrogen termination are investigated via density functional theory (DFT) in Kohn-Sham formulation. "Selection rules" will be formulated, that allow to extract (approximately) the electronic structure of the AGNR bands starting from the four graphene dispersion sheets. In analogy with the case of carbon nanotubes, a threefold periodicity of the excitation gap with the ribbon width (N, number of carbon atoms per carbon slice) is predicted that is confirmed by ab initio results. While traditionally such a periodicity would be obs…
Edge structure plays an essential role in the nature of electronic states in graphene nanoribbons. By focusing on the interplay between this feature and non-trivial topology in the domain of the Dirac confinement problem, this paper proposes to examine how effects associated with edge shape manifest themselves in conjunction with the topological signature typical of Möbius strips within a low-energy regime. Aiming to provide an alternative to prevailing tight-binding approaches, zigzag and armchair Möbius strips are modeled by proposing compatible sets of boundary conditions, prescribing profi…
Zigzag graphene nanoribbons can have magnetic ground states with ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic, or canted configurations, depending on carrier density. We show that an electric field directed across the ribbon alters the magnetic state, favoring antiferromagnetic configurations. This property can be used to prepare ribbons with a prescribed spin-orientation on a given edge.
Controlling the forbidden gap of graphene nano-ribbons (GNR) is a major challenge that has to be attained if this attractive material has to be used in micro- and nano-electronics. Using an unambiguous notation {m,n}-GNR, where m (n) is the number of six carbon rings in the arm-chair (zig-zag) directions, we investigate how varies the HOMO-LUMO gap when the size of the GNR is varied by increasing either m or n, while keeping the other variable fixed. It is shown that no matter whether charge- or spin-density-waves solutions are considered, the gap varies smoothly when n is kept fixed whereas i…
A graphene nanoribbon is a good candidate for a $(1+1)$ Chern-Simons topological insulator since it obeys particle-hole symmetry. We show that in a finite semiconducting armchair ribbon, which has two zigzag edges and two armchair edges, a $(1+1)$ Chern-Simons topological insulator is indeed realized as the length of the armchair edges becomes large in comparison to that of the zigzag edges. But only a quasi-topological insulator is formed in a metallic armchair ribbon with a pseudogap. In such systems a zigzag edge acts like a domain wall, through which the polarization changes from $0$ to $e…
Using first-principles calculations and non-equilibrium Green's function method, we investigate the ballistic thermal transport in single-layer phosphorene. A significant crystallographic orientation dependence of thermal conductance is observed, with room temperature thermal conductance along zigzag direction being 40 percent higher than that along armchair direction. Furthermore, we find that the thermal conductance anisotropy with the orientation can be tuned by applying strain. In particular, the zigzag-oriented thermal conductance is enhanced when a zigzag-oriented strain is applied but d…
We present an analytical investigation of the exciton optical absorption in a narrow armchair graphene nanoribbon (AGNR) in the presence of a longitudinal external electric field directed parallel to the ribbon axis. The two-body 2D Dirac equation for the massless electron and hole subject to the ribbon confinement, Coulomb interaction and electric field is employed. The ribbon confinement is assumed to be much stronger than the internal exciton electric field which in turn considerably exceeds the external electric field. This justifies an adiabatic approximation implying a slow longitudinal …
Using the tight-binding approach we study the electronic transport in a $\mathrm{MoS}_2$ zigzag ribbon with a spatially varying potential profile. Considering a ribbon with a smooth potential step in the Fermi energy regime where the transport is dominated by the edge modes, we find that the conductance exhibits sharp resonances due to the resonant transport through a n-p-n junction effectively created in the structure. We show that in a gated wire the current carried on the wire edges can be blocked despite the metallic band structure of the ribbon. For the Fermi energies corresponding to $\m…
In graphene nanoribbons (GNRs), the lateral confinement of charge carriers opens a band gap, the key feature to enable novel graphene-based electronics. Successful synthesis of GNRs has triggered efforts to realize field-effect transistors (FETs) based on single ribbons. Despite great progress, reliable and reproducible fabrication of single-ribbon FETs is still a challenge that impedes applications and the understanding of the charge transport. Here, we present reproducible fabrication of armchair GNR-FETs based on a network of nanoribbons and analyze the charge transport mechanism using nine…
We use quantum Monte Carlo method to study the indirect coupling between two magnetic impurities on the zigzag edge of graphene ribbon, with respect to the chemical potential $μ$. We find that the spin-spin correlation between two adatoms located on the nearest sites in the zigzag edge are drastically suppressed around the zero-energy. As we switch the system away from half-filling, the antiferromagnetic correlation is first enhanced and then decreased. If the two adatoms are adsorbed on the sites belonging to the same sublattice, we find similar behavior of spin-spin correlation except for a …
