We construct the integral Lawson--Deligne map of weight $q=n-p-k-1$ on smooth complex projective $n$-folds using filtered currents. It lifts the Friedlander--Mazur cycle class, recovers the reduced generalized Abel--Jacobi invariant on homologically trivial classes, and is compatible with algebraic correspondences.
A Picard--Fuchs separation argument applied to the conic and van Geemen normal functions on the mirror quintic determines explicit regulator subspaces modulo the full rational period group. For prescribed elliptic moduli and a suitable mirror-quintic fiber, the subspace generated by their $a$- and $b$-loop products has dimension twice the $\Q$-dimension of the period-monomial space. Moduli $i\sqrt{\ell_j}$ for distinct primes $\ell_j$ give $2^{k+1}$ independent images on varieties of dimension $p+k+2$; one repeated imaginary quadratic modulus gives dimension four for every $k\geq1$. Compatibility with known projective-bundle and blow-up decompositions yields independent exceptional subspaces on smooth rational varieties.
We also compare the higher Chow composite with the Bloch--KLM regulator after lowering the Hodge filtration. The KLM representative reduces to a cut-current class, and equality with the Lawson composite is proved in degree zero and for constant-unit decomposable classes. The general positive-degree comparison is reduced to an explicit filtered-realization condition.
In this paper, we compute the Lawson homology groups and Deligne-Beilinson cohomology groups for Fulton-MacPherson configuration spaces. The explicit formulas are given.
By comparing Deligne complex and Aeppli-Bott-Chern complex, we construct a differential cohomology $\widehat{H}^*(X, *, *)$ that plays the role of Harvey-Lawson spark group $\widehat{H}^*(X, *)$, and a cohomology $H^*_{ABC}(X; \Z(*, *))$ that plays the role of Deligne cohomology $H^*_{\mathcal{D}}(X; \Z(*))$ for every complex manifold $X$. They fit in the short exact sequence $$ 0\rightarrow H^{k+1}_{ABC}(X; \Z(p, q)) \rightarrow \widehat{H}^k(X, p, q) \overset{δ_1}{\rightarrow} Z^{k+1}_I(X, p, q) \rightarrow 0$$ and $\widehat{H}^{\bullet}(X, \bullet, \bullet)$ possess ring structure and refin…
We study the Harvey-Lawson spark characters of level p on complex manifolds. Presenting Deligne cohomology classes by sparks of level $p$, we give an explicit analytic product formula for Deligne cohomology. We also define refined Chern classes in Deligne cohomology for holomorphic vector bundles over complex manifolds. Applications to algebraic cycles are given. A Bott-type vanishing theorem in Deligne cohomology for holomorphic foliations is established. A general construction of Nadel-type invariants is given together with a new proof of Nadel's conjecture.
In this article, we construct Chern classes in rational Deligne cohomology for coherent sheaves on a smooth complex compact manifold. We prove that these classes verify the functoriality property under pullbacks, the Whitney formula and the Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch theorem for projective morphisms between smooth complex compact manifolds.
In this note, we report on a work jointly done with C. Simpson on a generalization of Reznikov's theorem which says that the Chern-Simons classes and in particular the Deligne Chern classes (in degrees $> 1$) are torsion, of a flat vector bundle on a smooth complex projective variety. We consider the case of a smooth quasi--projective variety with an irreducible smooth divisor at infinity. We define the Chern-Simons classes of the Deligne's \textit{canonical extension} of a flat vector bundle with unipotent monodromy at infinity, which lift the Deligne Chern classes and prove that these classe…
In this paper we express the class of the structure sheaves of the closures of Deligne--Lusztig varieties as explicit double Grothendieck polynomials in the first Chern classes of appropriate line bundles on the ambient flag variety. This is achieved by viewing such closures as degeneracy loci of morphisms of vector bundles.
In this note, we investigate the Chern classes of flat bundles in the arithmetic Deligne Cohomology, introduced by Green-Griffiths, Asakura-Saito. We show nontriviality of the Chern classes in some cases and the proof also indicates that generic flat bundles (in its moduli space) can be expected to have nontrivial classes, which is in contrast with some Gauss-Manin systems.
Faltings showed that "arithmetic Kodaira--Spencer classes" satisfying a certain compatibility axiom cannot exist. By modifying his definitions slightly, we show that the Deligne--Illusie classes satisfy what could be considered an "arithmetic Kodaira--Spencer" compatibility condition. Afterwards we discuss a "wittfinitesimal Torelli problem" and its relation to CM Jacobians.
We introduce exponential complexes of sheaves on manifolds. They are resolutions of the (Tate twisted) constant sheaves of the rational numbers, generalising the short exact exponential sequence. There are canonical maps from the exponential complexes to the de Rham complex. Using this, we introduce new complexes calculating the rational Deligne cohomology. We call them exponential Deligne complexes. Their advantage is that, at least at the generic point of a complex variety, one can define Beilinson's regulator map to the rational Deligne cohomology on the level of complexes. Namely, we defin…
Let $X$ be a complex projective algebraic variety with Gorenstein quotient singularities and $\X$ a smooth Deligne-Mumford stack having $X$ as its coarse moduli space. We show that the CSM class $c^{SM}(X)$ coincides with the pushforward to $X$ of the total Chern class $c(T_{I\X})$ of the inertia stack $I\X$. We also show that the stringy Chern class $c_{str}(X)$ of $X$, whenever is defined, coincides with the pushforward to $X$ of the total Chern class $c(T_{II\X})$ of the double inertia stack $II\X$. Some consequences concerning stringy/orbifold Hodge numbers are deduced.
In this paper, we prove a generalization of Reznikov's theorem which says that the Chern-Simons classes and in particular the Deligne Chern classes (in degrees $>1$) are torsion, of a flat bundle on a smooth complex projective variety. We consider the case of a smooth quasi--projective variety with an irreducible smooth divisor at infinity. We define the Chern-Simons classes of Deligne's canonical extension of a flat vector bundle with unipotent monodromy at infinity, which lift the Deligne Chern classes and prove that these classes are torsion.
It is well known that degree two Deligne cohomology groups can be identified with groups of isomorphism classes of holomorphic line bundles with connections. There is also a geometric description of degree three Deligne cohomology, due to J-L. Brylinski and P. Deligne, in terms of gerbes with connective structures and curvings. This paper gives a geometric interpretation of Deligne cohomology of all degrees, in terms of equivalence classes of higher line bundles with $k$-connections. It is also shown that the classical Abel-Jacobi isomorphism $Pic^0(X) \cong J(X)$ generalizes to the isomorphis…
In this paper we consider Deligne-Lusztig varieties and their analogues when the Frobenius endomorphism is replaced with conjugation by an element in a group, especially a regular semisimple or regular unipotent one. We calculate their classes in the Chow group of the flag variety in terms of Schubert classes. Also we give some sufficient criteria when different elements in the Weyl group result in the same class.
We combine Deligne's global invariant cycle theorem, and the algebraicity theorem of Cattani, Deligne and Kaplan, for the connected components of the locus of Hodge classes, to conclude that under simple assumptions these components are defined over number fields (assuming the initial family is), as expected from the Hodge conjecture. We also show that the Hodge conjecture for (weakly) absolute Hodge classes reduces to the Hodge conjecture for (weakly) absolute Hodge classes on varieties defined over number fields.
For curves of genus bigger than one we prove that Buium's first arithmetic jet spaces (p-jet spaces) admit the structure of a torsor under some line bundle. This result lifts a known constructions in characteristic p where the first $p$-jet space modulo p is a sheaf under the Frobenius tangent sheaf (parametrizing Frobenius linear derivations). In particular we show there is a natural family of lifts of the Frobenius tangent bundle so that the first $p$-jet space (and hence higher order lifts of the Frobenius) form torsor a under this bundle. The Cech cohomology classes associated to this tors…
We define Gromov-Witten classes and invariants of smooth proper tame Deligne-Mumford stacks of finite presentation over a Dedekind domain. We prove that they are deformation invariants and verify the fundamental axioms. For a smooth proper tame Deligne-Mumford stack over a Dedekind domain, we prove that the invariants of fibers in different characteristics are the same. We show that genus zero Gromov-Witten invariants define a potential which satisfies the WDVV equation and we deduce from this a reconstruction theorem for genus zero Gromov-Witten invariants in arbitrary characteristic.
We consider the weak version of the Deligne-Simpson problem: give necessary and sufficient conditions upon the conjugacy classes $c_j\subset gl(n,{\bf C})$ (resp. $C_j\subset GL(n,{\bf C})$) so that there exist $(p+1)$-tuples of matrices $A_j\in c_j$, $A_1+... +A_{p+1}=0$ (resp. $M_1... M_{p+1}=I$) with trivial centralizers (i.e. reduced to scalars). The true Deligne-Simpson problem requires irreducibility instead of triviality of the centralizer. When the eigenvalues are generic, a Criterium on the Jordan normal forms defined by the conjugacy classes gives the necessary and sufficient conditi…
In despair, as Deligne (2000) put it, of proving the Hodge and Tate conjectures, we can try to find substitutes. For abelian varieties in characteristic zero, Deligne (1982) constructed a theory of Hodge classes having many of the properties that the algebraic classes would have if the Hodge conjecture were known. In this article I investigate whether there exists a theory of "rational Tate classes" on varieties over finite fields having the properties that the algebraic classes would have if the Hodge and Tate conjectures were known. v3. Submitted version.
We consider the variety of $(p+1)$-tuples of matrices $M_j$ from given conjugacy classes from $GL(n,{\bf C})$ such that $M_1... M_{p+1}=I$. This variety is connected with the Deligne-Simpson problem and the matrices $M_j$ are interpreted as monodromy operators of regular systems on Riemann's sphere. We consider among others cases when the dimension of the variety is higher than the expected one due to the presence of $(p+1)$-tuples with non-trivial centralizers.
The Deligne-Lusztig varieties associated to the Coxeter classes of the algebraic groups 2A2, 2B2 and 2G2 are affine algebraic curves. We produce explicit projective models of the closures of these curves. Furthermore for $d$ the Coxeter number of these groups, we find polynomials for each of these models that cut out the $\F_q$-points, the $\F_{q^d}$-points and the $\F_{q^{d+1}}$-points, and demonstrate a relation satisfied by these polynomials.
The Deligne-Simpson problem (DSP) (resp. the weak DSP) is formulated like this: {\em give necessary and sufficient conditions for the choice of the conjugacy classes $C_j\subset GL(n,{\bf C})$ or $c_j\subset gl(n,{\bf C})$ so that there exist irreducible (resp. with trivial centralizer) $(p+1)$-tuples of matrices $M_j\in C_j$ or $A_j\in c_j$ satisfying the equality $M_1... M_{p+1}=I$ or $A_1+... +A_{p+1}=0$}. The matrices $M_j$ and $A_j$ are interpreted as monodromy operators of regular linear systems and as matrices-residua of Fuchsian ones on Riemann's sphere. For $(p+1)$-tuples of conjugacy…

We consider the {\em Deligne-Simpson problem}: {\em Give necessary and sufficient conditions for the choice of the conjugacy classes $c_j\subset gl(n,{\bf C})$ or $C_j\subset GL(n,{\bf C})$, $j=1,..., p+1$, so that there exist irreducible $(p+1)$-tuples of matrices $A_j\in c_j$ whose sum is 0 or of matrices $M_j\in C_j$ whose product is $I$.} The matrices $A_j$ (resp. $M_j$) are interepreted as matrices-residua of Fuchsian linear systems (resp. as monodromy operators of regular systems) on Riemann's sphere. We consider the case when the sum of the dimensions of the conjugacy classes $c_j$ or $…
For a proper local embedding between two Deligne--Mumford stacks Y and X, we find, under certain mild conditions, a new (possibly non-separated) Deligne--Mumford stack X', with an etale, surjective and universally closed map to the target X, and whose fiber product with the image of the local embedding is a finite union of stacks with corresponding etale, surjective and universally closed maps to Y. Moreover, a natural set of weights on the substacks of X' allows the construction of a universally closed push-forward, and thus a comparison between the Chow groups of X' and X. We apply the const…
We consider the variety of $(p+1)$-tuples of matrices $A_j$ (resp. $M_j$) from given conjugacy classes $c_j\subset gl(n,{\bf C})$ (resp. $C_j\subset GL(n,{\bf C})$) such that $A_1+... +A_{p+1}=0$ (resp. $M_1... M_{p+1}=I$). This variety is connected with the weak {\em Deligne-Simpson problem: give necessary and sufficient conditions on the choice of the conjugacy classes $c_j\subset gl(n,{\bf C})$ (resp. $C_j\subset GL(n,{\bf C})$) so that there exist $(p+1)$-tuples with trivial centralizers of matrices $A_j\in c_j$ (resp. $M_j\in C_j$) whose sum equals 0 (resp. whose product equals $I$).} The…
Let X be a smooth variety over $F_p$. Let E be a number field. For each nonarchimedean place $λ$ of E prime to p consider the set of isomorphism classes of irreducible lisse $\bar{E}_λ$-sheaves on X with determinant of finite order such that for every closed point x in X the characteristic polynomial of the Frobenius $F_x$ has coefficents in E. We prove that this set does not depend on $λ$. The idea is to use a method developed by G.Wiesend to reduce the problem to the case where X is a curve. This case was treated by L. Lafforgue.
By resolving an arbitrary perfect derived object over a Deligne-Mumford stack, we define its Euler class. We then apply it to define the Euler numbers for a smooth Calabi-Yau threefold in the 4-dimensional projective space. These numbers are conjectured to be the reduced Gromov-Witten invariants and to determine the usual Gromov-Witten numbers of the smooth quintic as speculated by J. Li and A. Zinger.
We construct Bridgeland stability conditions on the derived category of smooth quasi-projective Deligne-Mumford surfaces whose coarse moduli spaces have ADE singularities. This unifies the construction for smooth surfaces and Bridgeland's work on Kleinian singularities. The construction hinges on an orbifold version of the Bogomolov-Gieseker inequality for slope semistable sheaves on the stack, and makes use of the Toën-Hirzebruch-Riemann-Roch theorem.
We determine those k-tuples of conjugacy classes of matrices, from which it is possible to choose matrices which have no common invariant subspace and have sum zero. This is an additive version of the Deligne-Simpson problem. We deduce the result from earlier work of ours on preprojective algebras and the moment map for representations of quivers. Our answer depends on the root system for a Kac-Moody Lie algebra.
Metrics of constant negative curvature on a compact Riemann surface are critical points of the Liouville action functional, which in recent constructions is rigorously defined as a class in a Cech-de Rham complex with respect to a suitable covering of the surface. We show that this class is the square of the metrized holomorphic tangent bundle in hermitian-holomorphic Deligne cohomology. We achieve this by introducing a different version of the hermitian-holomorphic Deligne complex which is nevertheless quasi-isomorphic to the one introduced by Brylinski in his construction of Quillen line bun…
Let [X/G] be a smooth Deligne-Mumford quotient stack. In a previous paper the authors constructed a class of exotic products called inertial products on K(I[X/G]), the Grothendieck group of vector bundles on the inertia stack I[X/G]. In this paper we develop a theory of Chern classes and compatible power operations for inertial products. When G is diagonalizable these give rise to an augmented $λ$-ring structure on inertial K-theory. One well-known inertial product is the virtual product. Our results show that for toric Deligne-Mumford stacks there is a $λ$-ring structure on inertial K-theory.…
We obtain a precise relation between the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson class of a subvariety of projective space and the Euler characteristics of its general linear sections. In the case of a hypersurface, this leads to simple proofs of formulas of Dimca-Papadima and Huh for the degrees of the polar map of a homogeneous polynomial, extending these formula to any algebraically closed field of characteristic~0, and proving a conjecture of Dolgachev on 'homaloidal' polynomials in the same context. We generalize these formulas to subschemes of higher codimension in projective space. We also describe a…
In this work we prove the so called dimension property for the cohomological field theory associated with a homogeneous polynomial W with an isolated singularity, in the algebraic framework of arXiv:1105.2903. This amounts to showing that some cohomology classes on the Deligne-Mumford moduli spaces of stable curves, constructed using Fourier-Mukai type functors associated with matrix factorizations, live in prescribed dimension. The proof is based on a homogeneity result established in arXiv:math/0011032 for certain characteristic classes of Koszul matrix factorizations of 0. To reduce to this…
We prove an analogue of the Lefschetz (1,1) Theorem characterizing cohomology classes of Cartier divisors (or equivalently first Chern classes of line bundles) in the second integral cohomology. Let $X$ be a normal complex projective variety. We show that the classes of Cartier divisors in $H^2(X,Z)$ are precisely the classes $x$ such that (i) the image of $x$ in $H^2(X,C)$ (cohomology with complex coefficients) lies in $F^1 H^2(X,C)$ (first level of the Hodge filtration for Deligne's mixed Hodge structure), and (ii) $x$ is Zariski-locally trivial, i.e., there is a covering of $X$ by Zariski o…
Let $\ix$ be a smooth Deligne-Mumford stack over the complex numbers. One can define twisted orbifold Gromov-Witten invariants of $\ix$ by considering multiplicative invertible characteristic classes of various bundles on the moduli spaces of stable maps $\ix_{g,n,d}$, cupping them with evaluation and cotangent line classes and then integrating against the virtual fundamental class. These are more general than the twisted invariants introduced by Tseng. We express the generating series of the twisted invariants in terms of the generating series of the untwisted ones. We derive the corollaries …
