The Deligne-Simpson problem (DSP) (resp. the weak DSP) is formulated like this: {\em give necessary and sufficient conditions for the choice of the conjugacy classes $C_j\subset GL(n,{\bf C})$ or $c_j\subset gl(n,{\bf C})$ so that there exist irreducible (resp. with trivial centralizer) $(p+1)$-tuples of matrices $M_j\in C_j$ or $A_j\in c_j$ satisfying the equality $M_1... M_{p+1}=I$ or $A_1+... +A_{p+1}=0$}. The matrices $M_j$ and $A_j$ are interpreted as monodromy operators of regular linear systems and as matrices-residua of Fuchsian ones on Riemann's sphere. For $(p+1)$-tuples of conjugacy classes one of which is with distinct eigenvalues 1) we prove that the variety $\{(M_1,..., M_{p+1})|M_j\in C_j,M_1... M_{p+1}=I\}$ or $\{(A_1,..., A_{p+1})|A_j\in c_j,A_1+... +A_{p+1}=0\}$ is connected if the DSP is positively solved for the given conjugacy classes and 2) we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the positive solvability of the weak DSP.

We consider the weak version of the Deligne-Simpson problem: give necessary and sufficient conditions upon the conjugacy classes $c_j\subset gl(n,{\bf C})$ (resp. $C_j\subset GL(n,{\bf C})$) so that there exist $(p+1)$-tuples of matrices $A_j\in c_j$, $A_1+... +A_{p+1}=0$ (resp. $M_1... M_{p+1}=I$) with trivial centralizers (i.e. reduced to scalars). The true Deligne-Simpson problem requires irreducibility instead of triviality of the centralizer. When the eigenvalues are generic, a Criterium on the Jordan normal forms defined by the conjugacy classes gives the necessary and sufficient conditi…
The Deligne-Simpson problem in the multiplicative version is formulated like this: {\em give necessary and sufficient conditions for the choice of the conjugacy classes $C_j\in SL(n,{\bf C})$ so that there exist irreducible $(p+1)$-tuples of matrices $M_j\in C_j$ satisfying the equality $M_1... M_{p+1}=I$}. We solve the problem for generic eigenvalues in the case when all the numbers $Σ_{j,m}(σ)$ of Jordan blocks of a given matrix $M_j$, with a given eigenvalue $σ$ and of a given size $m$ (taken over all $j$, $σ$, $m$) are divisible by $d>1$. Generic eigenvalues are defined by explicit algebra…

We give a criterion which determines when a union of one-dimensional Deligne-Lusztig varieties has a connected closure. We also obtain a new, short proof of the connectedness criterion for Deligne-Lusztig varieties due to Lusztig.
We consider the variety of $(p+1)$-tuples of matrices $M_j$ from given conjugacy classes from $GL(n,{\bf C})$ such that $M_1... M_{p+1}=I$. This variety is connected with the Deligne-Simpson problem and the matrices $M_j$ are interpreted as monodromy operators of regular systems on Riemann's sphere. We consider among others cases when the dimension of the variety is higher than the expected one due to the presence of $(p+1)$-tuples with non-trivial centralizers.
The classical additive Deligne-Simpson problem is the existence problem for Fuchsian connections with residues at the singular points in specified adjoint orbits. Crawley-Boevey found the solution in 2003 by reinterpreting the problem in terms of quiver varieties. A more general version of this problem, solved by Hiroe, allows additional unramified irregular singularities. We apply the theory of fundamental and regular strata due to Bremer and Sage to formulate a version of the Deligne-Simpson problem in which certain ramified singularities are allowed. These allowed singular points are called…
In "Quantization of Hitchin's Integrable System and Hecke Eigensheaves", Beilinson and Drinfeld introduced the "very good" property for a smooth complex equidimensional stack. They prove that for a semisimple complex group G, the moduli stack of G-bundles over a smooth complex projective curve X is "very good", as long as X has genus g > 1. In the case of the projective line, when g = 0, this is not the case. However, the result can sometimes be extended to the projective line by introducing additional parabolic structure at a collection of marked points and slightly modifying the definition o…
For unramified reductive groups, we determine the connected components of affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties in the partial affine flag varieties. Based on the work of Hamacher-Kim and Zhou, this result allows us to verify, in the unramified group case, the He-Rapoport axioms, the ``almost product structure" of Newton strata, and the precise description of mod $p$ isogeny classes predicted by the Langlands-Rapoport conjecture, for the Kisin-Pappas integral models of Shimura varieties of Hodge type with parahoric level structure.
Our interest in this paper is a generalization of the additive Deligne-Simpson problem which is originally defined for Fuchsian differential equations on the Riemann sphere. We shall extend this problem to differential equations having an arbitrary number of unramified irregular singular points and determine the existence of solutions of the generalized additive Deligne-Simpson problems. Moreover we apply this result to the geometry of the moduli spaces of stable meromorphic connections of trivial bundles on the Riemann sphere. Namely, open embedding of the moduli spaces into quiver varieties …
In this note, we report on a work jointly done with C. Simpson on a generalization of Reznikov's theorem which says that the Chern-Simons classes and in particular the Deligne Chern classes (in degrees $> 1$) are torsion, of a flat vector bundle on a smooth complex projective variety. We consider the case of a smooth quasi--projective variety with an irreducible smooth divisor at infinity. We define the Chern-Simons classes of the Deligne's \textit{canonical extension} of a flat vector bundle with unipotent monodromy at infinity, which lift the Deligne Chern classes and prove that these classe…
We determine those k-tuples of conjugacy classes of matrices, from which it is possible to choose matrices which have no common invariant subspace and have sum zero. This is an additive version of the Deligne-Simpson problem. We deduce the result from earlier work of ours on preprojective algebras and the moment map for representations of quivers. Our answer depends on the root system for a Kac-Moody Lie algebra.
The Deligne--Simpson problem is an existence problem for connections with specified local behavior. Almost all previous work on this problem has restricted attention to connections with regular or unramified singularities. Recently, the authors, together with Kulkarni and Matherne, formulated a version of the Deligne--Simpson problem where certain ramified singular points are allowed and solved it for the case of Coxeter connections, i.e., connections on the Riemann sphere with a maximally ramified singularity at zero and (possibly) an additional regular singular point at infinity. A certain m…
Let $X/\mathbb{F}_{q}$ be a smooth geometrically connected variety. Inspired by work of Corlette-Simpson over $\mathbb{C}$, we formulate a conjecture that absolutely irreducible rank 2 local systems with infinite monodromy on $X$ come from families of abelian varieties. When $X$ is a projective variety, we prove a Lefschetz-style theorem for abelian schemes of $\text{GL}_2$-type on $X$, modeled after a theorem of Simpson. If one assumes a strong form of Deligne's ($p$-adic) \emph{companions conjecture} from Weil II, this implies that our conjecture for projective varieties also reduces to the …
Consider the Deligne-Simpson problem: {\em give necessary and sufficient conditions for the choice of the conjugacy classes $C_j\subset GL(n,{\bf C})$ (resp. $c_j\subset gl(n,{\bf C})$) so that there exist irreducible $(p+1)$-tuples of matrices $M_j\in C_j$ (resp. $A_j\in c_j$) satisfying the equality $M_1... M_{p+1}=I$ (resp. $A_1+... +A_{p+1}=0$)}. The matrices $M_j$ and $A_j$ are interpreted as monodromy operators and as matrices-residua of fuchsian systems on Riemann's sphere. We give new examples of existence of such $(p+1)$-tuples of matrices $M_j$ (resp. $A_j$) which are {\em rigid}, i.…
We give a number of equivalent definitions of hypercomplex varieties and construct a twistor space for a hypercomplex variety. We prove that our definition of a hypercomplex variety (used, e. g., in alg-geom/9612013) is equivalent to a definition proposed by Deligne and Simpson, who used twistor spaces. This gives a way to define hypercomplex spaces (to allow nilpotents in the structure sheaf). We give a self-contained proof of desingularization theorem for hypercomplex varieties: a normalization of a hypercomplex variety is smooth and hypercomplex.
