In this paper, an algebraic theory for local rings of finite embedding dimension is developed. Several extensions of (Krull) dimension are proposed, which are then used to generalize singularity notions from commutative algebra. Finally, variants of the homological theorems are shown to hold in equal characteristic.
This theory is then applied to Noetherian local rings in order to get: (i) over a Cohen-Macaulay local ring, uniform bounds on the Betti numbers of a Cohen-Macaulay module in terms of dimension and multiplicity, and similar bounds for the Bass numbers of a finitely generated module; (ii) a characterization for being respectively analytically unramified, analytically irreducible, unmixed, quasi-unmixed, normal, Cohen-Macaulay, pseudo-rational, or weakly F-regular in terms of certain uniform arithmetic behavior; (iii) in mixed characteristic, the Improved New Intersection Theorem when the residual characteristic or ramification index is large with respect to dimension (and some other numerical invariants).
We describe the Cohen-Macaulay part of the Ziegler spectrum and calculate Ringel's quilt of the category of finitely generated Cohen--Macaulay modules over the A-infinity plane singularity.
We study necessary and sufficient conditions for a valued field $\KF$ with value group $G$ and residue field $\kf$ (with char $\KF$ = char $\kf$) to admit a truncation closed embedding in the field of generalized power series $\kf((G, f))$ (with factor set $f$). We show that this is equivalent to the existence of a family ({\it tower of complements}) of $\kf$-subspaces of $\KF$ which are complements of the (possibly fractional) ideals of the valuation ring. If $\KF$ is a Henselian field of characteristic 0 or, more generally, an algebraically maximal Kaplansky field, we give an intrinsic const…
The aim of this paper is to study the theory of cohomology annihilators over commutative Gorenstein rings. We adopt a triangulated category point of view and study the annihilation of stable category of maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules. We prove that in dimension one the cohomology annihilator ideal and the conductor ideal coincide under mild assumptions. We present a condition on a ring homomorphism between Gorenstein rings which allows us to carry the cohomology annihilator of the domain to that of the codomain. As an application, we generalize the Milnor-Jung formula for algebraic curves to t…
We construct explicitly regular sequences in the semigroup ring $R=\CC[K]$ of lattice points of the graded cone $K$. We conjecture that the quotients of $R$ by these sequences describe locally string-theoretic cohomology of a toroidal singularity associated to $K$. As a byproduct, we give an elementary proof of the result of Hochster that semigroup rings of rational polyhedral cones are Cohen-Macaulay.
We study singularity categories of exact categories with a focus on those associated to a complete hereditary cotorsion pair. As an application we identify a non-affine analogue of the singularity category of a Gorenstein local ring; with this Buchweitz's classic equivalence of three categories over Gorenstein local rings has been generalized to schemes, a project started by Murfet and Salarian more than ten years ago. As another application we use the framework to characterize rings of finite finitistic dimension.
We prove that a local ring $R$ of embedding codepth at most 3 has at most two semidualizing complexes up to shift-isomorphism, namely, $R$ itself and a dualizing $R$-complex if one exists.
In this paper, we give new characterizations of the Buchsbaum and Cohen-Macaulay properties of the tangent cone $\gr_\frakm(R)$, where $(R,\frakm)$ is a numerical semigroup ring of embedding dimension 3. In particular, we confirm the conjectures raised by Sapko on the Buchsbaumness of $\gr_\frakm(R)$.
A complete local ring of embedding codepth 3 has a minimal free resolution of length 3 over a regular local ring. Such resolutions carry a differential graded algebra structure, based on which one can classify local rings of embedding codepth 3. We give examples of algebra structures that have been conjectured not to occur.
For a wide class of Cohen--Macaulay modules over the local ring of the plane curve singularity of type T_44 we explicitly describe the corresponding matrix factorizations. The calculations are based on the technique of matrix problems, in particular, representations of bunches of chains.
We construct a ring with the properties of the title of the paper. We also construct some other local rings of embedding dimension 4 with exotic properties. Among the methods used are the {\tt Macaulay2}-package {\tt DGAlgebras} by Frank Moore, combined with and inspired by results by Anick, Avramov, Backelin, Katthän, Lemaire, Levin, Löfwall and others.
This paper gives upper bounds for the dimension of the singularity category of a Cohen-Macaulay local ring with an isolated singularity. One of them recovers an upper bound given by Ballard, Favero and Katzarkov in the case of a hypersurface.
Let $a$ and $b$ be two coprime positive integers and $k$ an arbitrary field. We determine the ring structure of the Hochschild cohomology of the numerical semigroup algebras $k[s^{a},s^{b}]$ of embedding dimension two (thus also complete intersections) in terms of generators and relations. In addition, we compute the Hilbert series for this cohomology ring.
This paper establishes an analogue of the special chain theorem for the embedding dimension of polynomial rings, with direct application on the (embedding) codimension. In particular, we recover a classic result on the transfer of regularity to polynomial rings (initially proved via a combination of Serre's result on finite global dimension and Hilbert theorem on syzygies). A second application characterizes regularity in general settings of localizations of polynomial rings, including Nagata rings and Serre's conjecture rings.
For a wide class of Cohen--Macaulay modules over the local ring of the plane curve singularity of type $T_{36}$ we describe explicitly the corresponding matrix factorizations. The calculations are based on the technique of matrix problems, in particular, representations of bunches of chains.
We use homogeneous spectra of multigraded rings to construct toric embeddings of a large family of projective varieties which preserve some of the birational geometry of the underlying variety, generalizing the well-known construction associated to Mori Dream Spaces.
We give a complete description of the cone of Betti diagrams over a standard graded hypersurface ring of the form k[x,y]/<q>, where q is a homogeneous quadric. We also provide a finite algorithm for decomposing Betti diagrams, including diagrams of infinite projective dimension, into pure diagrams. Boij--Soederberg theory completely describes the cone of Betti diagrams over a standard graded polynomial ring; our result provides the first example of another graded ring for which the cone of Betti diagrams is entirely understood.
For some numerical semigroup rings of small embedding dimension, namely those of embedding dimension 3, and symmetric or pseudosymmetric of embedding dimension 4, presentations has been determined in the literature. We extend these results by giving the whole graded minimal free resolutions explicitly. Then we use these resolutions to determine some invariants of the semigroups and certain interesting relations among them. Finally, we determine semigroups of small embedding dimensions which have strongly indispensable resolutions.
We give a generalization of an algebraic formula of Gomez-Mont for the index of a vector field with isolated zero in (C^n,0) and tangent to an isolated hypersurface singularity. We only assume that the vector field has an isolated zero on the singularity.
Let I be an ideal of a regular local ring Q with residue field k. The length of the minimal free resolution of R=Q/I is called the codepth of R. If it is at most 3, then the resolution carries a structure of a differential graded algebra, and the induced algebra structure on $Tor_Q(R,k) provides for a classification of such local rings. We describe the Macaulay2 package CodepthThree that implements an algorithm for classifying a local ring as above by computation of a few cohomological invariants.
The aim of this article is to prove some results on the existence of an integral extension domain of a complete local Noetherian domain in mixed characteristic $p>0$ having certain distinguished properties with respect to the Frobenius map. We prove the main results by constructing required extension domains via Witt vectors and the method of maximal étale extensions. It is worth remarking that the resulting algebras have deep connections with the homological conjectures and the rings in $p$-adic Hodge theory.
We use our extension of the Noether-Lefschetz theorem to describe generators of the class groups at the local rings of singularities of very general hypersurfaces containing a fixed base locus. We give several applications, including (1) every subgroup of the class group of the completed local ring of a rational double point arises as the class group of such a singularity on a surface in complex projective 3-space and (2) every complete local ring arising from a normal hypersurface singularity over the complex numbers is the completion of a unique factorization domain of essentially finite typ…
We show that Stanley's conjecture holds for a polynomial ring over a field in four variables. In the case of polynomial ring in five variables, we prove that the monomial ideals with all associated primes of height two, are Stanley ideals.
Let $(A,\mathfrak{m})$ be a Gorenstein local ring and let $CMS(A)$ be its stable category of maximal CM $A$-modules. Suppose $CMS(A) \cong CMS(B)$ as triangulated categories. Then we show (1) If $A$ is a complete intersection of codimension $c$ then so is $B$. (2) If $A, B$ are Henselian and not hypersurfaces then $\dim A = \dim B$. (3) If $A, B$ are Henselian and $A$ is an isolated singularity then so is $B$. We also give some applications of our results. It should be remarked that if $R,S$ are complete CM but not necessarily Gorenstein and if there is an triangle isomorphism between the sing…
A topological interpretation of Hochster's Theta pairing of two modules on a hypersurface ring is given in terms of linking numbers. This generalizes results of M. Hochster and proves a conjecture of J. Steenbrink. As a corollary we get that the Theta pairing vanishes for isolated hypersurface singularities in an odd number of variables, as was conjectured by H. Dao.
Let R be a commutative noetherian local ring and consider the set of isomorphism classes of indecomposable totally reflexive R-modules. We prove that if this set is finite, then either it has exactly one element, represented by the rank 1 free module, or R is Gorenstein and an isolated singularity (if R is complete, then it is even a simple hypersurface singularity). The crux of our proof is to argue that if the residue field has a totally reflexive cover, then R is Gorenstein or every totally reflexive R-module is free.
For a standard graded algebra $R$, we consider embeddings of the the poset of Hilbert functions of quotients of $R$ into the poset of ideals of $R$, as a way of classification of Hilbert functions. There are examples of rings for which such embeddings do not exist. We describe how the embedding can be lifted to certain ring extensions, which is then used in the case of polarization and distraction. A version of a theorem of Clements--Lindström is proved. We exhibit a condition on the embedding that ensures that the classification of Hilbert functions is obtained with images of lexicographic se…
Monomial ideals and toric rings are closely related. By consider a Grobner basis we can always associated to any ideal $I$ in a polynomial ring a monomial ideal ${\rm in}_\prec I$, in some special situations the monomial ideal ${\rm in}_\prec I$ is square free. On the other hand given any monomial ideal $I$ of a polynomial ring $S$, we can define the toric $K[I]\subset S$. In this paper we will study toric rings defined by Segre embeddings, we will prove that their $h-$ vectors coincides with the so called Simon Newcomb number's in probabilities and combinatorics. We solve the original questio…
The generating series of the Bass numbers $μ^i_R=\mathrm{rank}_k \mathrm{Ext}^i_R(k,R)$ of local rings $R$ with residue field $k$ are computed in closed rational form, in case the embedding dimension $e$ of $R$ and its depth $d$ satisfy $e-d\le 3$. For each such $R$ it is proved that there is a real number $γ>1$, such that $μ^{d+i}_R\geγμ^{d+i-1}_R$ holds for all $i\ge 0$, except for $i=2$ in two explicitly described cases, where $μ^{d+2}_R=μ^{d+1}_R=2$. New restrictions are obtained on the multiplicative structures of minimal free resolutions of length 3 over regular local rings.
We construct a full embedding of the category of hyperfields into Dress's category of fuzzy rings and explicitly characterize the essential image --- it fails to be essentially surjective in a very minor way. This embedding provides an identification of Baker's theory of matroids over hyperfields with Dress's theory of matroids over fuzzy rings (provided one restricts to those fuzzy rings in the essential image). The embedding functor extends from hyperfields to hyperrings, and we study this extension in detail. We also analyze the relation between hyperfields and Baker's partial demifields.
Let R be a commutative Noetherian local ring. We show that R is Gorenstein if and only if every finitely generated R-module can be embedded in a finitely generated R-module of finite projective dimension. This extends a result of Auslander and Bridger to rings of higher Krull dimension, and it also improves a result due to Foxby where the ring is assumed to be Cohen-Macaulay.
In the spirit of Fakhruddin (arXiv:math/0212208v1) and Szpiro-Bhatnagar (arXiv:1010.2715v1), we show that for an equicharacteristic complete local ring A, with a given embedding of Spec(A) in the prime spectrum Spec(R) of some complete regular local ring R, any finite self map of A can be lifted to a finite self map of R, keeping the given embedding.
We study the question of when a ring can be realized as a direct summand of a regular ring by examining the case of homogeneous coordinate rings. We present very strong obstacles to expressing a graded ring with isolated singularity as a finite graded direct summand. For several classes of examples (del Pezzo surfaces, hypersurfaces), we give a complete classification of which coordinate rings can be expressed as direct summands (not necessarily finite), and in doing so answer a question of Hara about the FFRT property of the quintic del Pezzo. We also examine what happens in the case where th…
Let Z{t} be the ring of arithmetic power series that converge on the complex open unit disc. A classical result of Harbater asserts that every finite group occurs as a Galois group over the quotient field of Z{t}. We strengthen this by showing that every finite split embedding problem over Q acquires a solution over this field. More generally, we solve all t-unramified finite split embedding problems over the quotient field of O{t}, where O is the ring of integers of an arbitrary number field K.
We study the multiplicity of the jumping numbers of an $\mathfrak m$-primary ideal $\mathfrak a$ in a two-dimensional local ring with a rational singularity. The formula we provide for the multiplicities leads to a very simple and efficient method to detect whether a given rational number is a jumping number. We also give an explicit description of the Poincaré series of multiplier ideals associated to $\mathfrak a$ proving, in particular, that it is a rational function.
