We use C*-algebra theory to provide a new method of decomposing the eseential spectra of self-adjoint and non-self-adjoint Schrodinger operators in one or more space dimensions.
In this paper we characterize emptiness of the essential spectrum of the Laplacian under a hyperbolicity assumption for general graphs. Moreover we present a characterization for emptiness of the essential spectrum for planar tessellations in terms of curvature.
We study the minimum of the essential spectrum of canonical systems $Ju'=-zHu$. Our results can be described as a generalized and more quantitative version of the characterization of systems with purely discrete spectrum, which was recently obtained by Romanov and Woracek [6]. Our key tool is oscillation theory.
We provide a very general result that identifies the essential spectrum of broad classes of operators as exactly equal to the closure of the union of the spectra of suitable limits at infinity. Included is a new result on the essential spectra when potentials are asymptotic to isospectral tori. We also recover with a unified framework the HVZ theorem and Krein's results on orthogonal polynomials with finite essential spectra.
We isolate a large class of self-adjoint operators H whose essential spectrum is determined by their behavior at large x and we give a canonical representation of their essential spectrum in terms of spectra of limits at infinity of translations of H. The configuration space is an arbitrary abelian locally compact not compact group.
The spectral flow is a classical notion of functional analysis and differential geometry which was given different interpretations as Fredholm index, Witten index, and Maslov index. The classical theory treats spectral flow outside the essential spectrum. Inside essential spectrum, the spectral shift function could be considered as a proper analogue of spectral flow, but unlike the spectral flow, the spectral shift function is not an integer-valued function. In this paper it is shown that the notion of spectral flow admits a natural integer-valued extension for a.e. value of the spectral param…
We prove that the essential spectrum of the operator obtained by linearization about a steady state of the Euler equations governing the motion of inviscid ideal fluid in dimension two is a vertical strip whose width is determined by the maximal Lyapunov exponent of the flow induced by the steady state.
We construct Riemannian manifolds with singular continuous spectrum embedded in the absolutely continuous spectrum of the Laplacian. Our manifolds are asymptotically hyperbolic with sharp curvature bounds.
We present a new oscillation criterion to determine whether the number of eigenvalues below the essential spectrum of a given Jacobi operator is finite or not. As an application we show that Kenser's criterion for Jacobi operators follows as a special case.
It is known that the essential spectrum of a Schrödinger operator $H$ on $\ell^{2}\left(\mathbb{N}\right)$ is equal to the union of the spectra of right limits of $H$. The natural generalization of this relation to $\mathbb{Z}^{n}$ is known to hold as well. In this paper we generalize the notion of right limits to general infinite connected graphs and construct examples of graphs for which the essential spectrum of the Laplacian is strictly bigger than the union of the spectra of its right limits. As these right limits are trees, this result is complemented by the fact that the equality still …
A description of the essential spectrum is given for a general class of linear advective PDE with pseudodifferential bounded perturbation. We prove that every point in the Sacker-Sell spectrum of the corresponding bicharacteristic-amplitude system exponentiates into the spectrum of PDE. Exact spectral pictures are found in various cases. Applications to instability are presented.
We discuss the spectral properties of collisional semigroups associated to various models from transport theory by exploiting the links between the so-called resolvent approach and the semigroup approach. Precisely, we show that the essential spectrum of the full transport semigroup coincides with that of the collisionless transport semigroup in any $L^p$--spaces $(1 <p < \infty)$ for three 2D--transport models with Maxwell--boundary conditions.
A model operator $H$ corresponding to a three-particle discrete Schrödinger operator on a lattice $\Z^3$ is studied. The essential spectrum is described via the spectrum of two Friedrichs models with parameters $h_α(p),$ $α=1,2,$ $p \in \T^3=(-π,π]^3.$ The following results are proven: 1) The operator $H$ has a finite number of eigenvalues lying below the bottom of the essential spectrum in any of the following cases: (i) both operators $h_α(0), α=1,2,$ have a zero eigenvalue; (ii) either $h_1(0)$ or $h_2(0)$ has a zero eigenvalue. 2) The operator $H$ has infinitely many eigenvalues lying belo…
In this paper we formulate our results on the essential spectrum of many-particle pseudorelativistic Hamiltonians without magnetic and external potential fields in the spaces of functions, having arbitrary type $α$ of the permutational symmetry. We discover location of the essential spectrum for all $α$ and for some cases we establish new properties of the lower bound of this spectrum, which are useful for study of the discrete spectrum.
The linear stability of a steady state solution of 2D Euler equations of an ideal fluid is being studied. We give an explicit geometric construction of approximate eigenfunctions for the linearized Euler operator $L$ in vorticity form acting on Sobolev spaces on two dimensional torus. We show that each nonzero Lyapunov-Oseledets exponent for the flow induced by the steady state contributes a vertical line to the essential spectrum of $L$. Also, we compute the spectral and growth bounds for the group generated by $L$ via the maximal Lyapunov-Oseledets exponent. When the flow has arbitrarily lon…
Given a self-adjoint operator $H_0$ and a relatively $H_0$-compact self-adjoint operator $V,$ the functions $r_j(z) = - σ_j^{-1}(z),$ where $σ_j(z)$ are eigenvalues of the compact operator $(H_0-z)^{-1}V,$ bear a lot of important information about the pair $H_0$ and $V.$ We call them coupling resonances. In case of rank one (and positive) perturbation $V,$ there is only one coupling resonance function, which is a Herglotz function. This case has been studied in depth in the literature, and appears in different situations, such as Sturm-Liouville theory, random Schrödinger operators, harnomic a…
Based on the HVZ theorem and dilation analyticity of the pseudorelativistic no-pair Jansen-Hess operator, it is shown that for subcritical potential strength (Z < 90) the singular continuous spectrum is absent. The bound is slightly higher (Z < 102) for the Brown-Ravenhall operator whose eigenvalues are, by the virial theorem, confined to <2m if Z<50.math/m
We overview some of our recent results on the essential spectrum of N-body Hamiltonians with potentials defined by functions that have radial limits at infinity. The results extend the HVZ theorem which describes the essential spectrum of usual N-body Hamiltonians. The proof is based on a careful study of algebras generated by potentials and their cross-products. We also describe the topology on the spectrum of these algebras, thus extending to our setting a result of A. Mageira. Our techniques apply to more general classes of potentials associated to translation invariant algebras of bounded …
We address the Laplacian on a perturbed periodic graph which might not be a periodic graph. We present a class of perturbed graphs for which the essential spectra of the Laplacians are stable even when the graphs are perturbed by adding and removing infinitely many vertices and edges. Using this result, we demonstrate how to determine the spectra of cone-like graphs, the upper-half plane, and graphs obtained from $\mathbb{Z}^2$ by randomly adding vertices.
We prove sharp criteria on the behavior of radial curvature for the existence of asymptotically flat or hyperbolic Riemannian manifolds with prescribed sets of eigenvalues embedded in the spectrum of the Laplacian. In particular, we construct such manifolds with dense embedded point spectrum and sharp curvature bounds.
A lattice model of radiative decay (so-called spin-boson model) of a two level atom and at most two photons is considered. The location of the essential spectrum is described. For any coupling constant the finiteness of the number of eigenvalues below the bottom of its essential spectrum is proved. The results are obtained by considering a more general model $H$ for which the lower bound of its essential spectrum is estimated. Conditions which guarantee the finiteness of the number of eigenvalues of $H,$ below the bottom of its essential spectrum are found. It is shown that the discrete spectr…
In 1983, Klaus studied a class of potentials with bumps and computed the essential spectrum of the associated Schr{ö}dinger operator with the help of some localisations at infinity. A key hypothesis is that the distance between two consecutive bumps tends to infinity at infinity. In this article, we introduce a new class of graphs (with patterns) that mimics this situation, in the sense that the distance between two patterns tends to infinity at infinity. These patterns tend, in some way, to asymptotic graphs. They are the localisations at infinity. Our result is that the essential spectrum of…
A system of three quantum particles on the three-dimensional lattice $\Z^3$ with arbitrary "dispersion functions" having non-compact support and interacting via short-range pair potentials is considered. The energy operators of the systems of the two-and three-particles on the lattice $\Z^3$ in the coordinate and momentum representations are described as bounded self-adjoint operators on the corresponding Hilbert spaces. For all sufficiently small nonzero values of the two-particle quasi-momentum $k\in (-π,π]^3$ the finiteness of the number of eigenvalues of the two-particle discrete Schröding…
We provide a description of the spectrum and essential spectra of invertible weighted composition operators acting in some algebras of smooth functions on the interval.
A model operator $H$ corresponding to the energy operator of a system with non-conserved number $n\leq 3$ of particles is considered. The precise location and structure of the essential spectrum of $H$ is described. The existence of infinitely many eigenvalues below the bottom of the essential spectrum of $H$ is proved if the generalized Friedrichs model has a virtual level at the bottom of the essential spectrum and for the number $N(z)$ of eigenvalues below $z<0$ an asymptotics established. The finiteness of eigenvalues of $H$ below the bottom of the essential spectrum is proved if the gener…
A bounded operator $T$ in a Banach space $X$ is said to satisfy the essential descent spectrum equality, if the descent spectrum of $T$ as an operator on $X$ coincides with the essential descent spectrum of $T$. In this note, we give some conditions under which the equality $σ_{desc}(T) = σ^e_{desc}(T)$ holds for a single operator $T$.
We consider the Dirichlet Laplacian in tubular neighbourhoods of complete non-compact Riemannian manifolds immersed in the Euclidean space. We show that the essential spectrum coincides with the spectrum of a planar tube provided that the second fundamental form of the manifold vanishes at infinity and the transport of the cross-section along the manifold is asymptotically parallel. For low dimensions and codimensions, the result applies to the location of propagating states in nanostructures under physically natural conditions.
We study the essential spectrum and Fredholm properties of integral and pseudodiferential operators associated to (maybe non-commutative) locally compact groups G. The techniques involve crossed product C*-algebras. We extend previous results on the structure of the essential spectrum to operators belonging (or affiliated) to the Schrödinger representation of certain crossed products. When the group G is unimodular and type I, we cover a new class of pseudo-differential differential operators with operator-valued symbols involving the unitary dual of G. We use recent results on the role of fam…
The paper is devoted to the study of the essential spectrum of discrete Schrödinger operators on the lattice $\mathbb{Z}^{N}$ by means of the limit operators method. This method has been applied by one of the authors to describe the essential spectrum of (continuous) electromagnetic Schrödinger operators, square-root Klein-Gordon operators, and Dirac operators under quite weak assumptions on the behavior of the magnetic and electric potential at infinity. The present paper is aimed to illustrate the applicability and efficiency of the limit operators method to discrete problems as well. We con…
We discuss the essential spectrum of essentially self-adjoint elliptic differential operators of first order and of Laplace type operators on Riemannian vector bundles over geometrically finite orbifolds.
In this article we prove a generalization of Weyl's criterion for the essential spectrum of a self-adjoint operator on a Hilbert space. We then apply this criterion to the Laplacian on functions over open manifolds and get new results for its essential spectrum.
We study the nature of the essential spectrum of the Dirichlet Laplacian in tubes about infinite curves embedded in Euclidean spaces. Under suitable assumptions about the decay of curvatures at infinity, we prove the absence of singular continuous spectrum and state properties of possible embedded eigenvalues. The argument is based on Mourre conjugate operator method developed for acoustic multistratified domains by Benbernou and Dermenjian et al. As a technical preliminary, we carry out a spectral analysis for Schrodinger-type operators in straight Dirichlet tubes. We also apply the result to…
This paper is devoted to the investigation of the Weyl and the essential $S-$spectrum of a bounded right quaternionic linear operator in a right quaternionic Hilbert space. Using the quaternionic Riesz projection, the $S-$eigenvalue of finite type is introduced and studied. In particular, it is shown that the Weyl and the essential $S-$spectra does not contains eigenvalues of finite type. We also describe the boundary of the Weyl $S-$spectrum and the particular case of the spectral theorem of the essential $S-$spectrum.
We give an example of a scalar second order differential operator in the plane with double periodic coefficients and describe its modification, which causes an additional spectral band in the essential spectrum. The modified operator is obtained by applying to the coefficients a mirror reflection with respect to a vertical or horizontal line. This change gives rise to Rayleigh type waves localized near the line. The results are proven using asymptotic analysis, and they are based on high contrast of the coefficient functions.
In this paper we develop a new method to determine the essential spectrum of coupled systems of singular differential equations. Applications to problems from magnetohydrodynamics and astrophysics are given.
We establish equality between the essential spectrum of the Schroedinger operator with magnetic field in the exterior of a compact arbitrary dimensional domain and that of the operator defined in all the space, and discuss applications of this equality.
Let $\mathcal{A}$ be a $C^*$-algebra of bounded uniformly continuous functions on $X=\mathbb{R}^d$ such that $\mathcal{A}$ is stable under translations and contains the continuous functions that have a limit at infinity. Denote $\mathcal{A}^\dagger$ the boundary of $X$ in the character space of $\mathcal{A}$. Then the crossed product $\mathscr{A}=\mathcal{A}\rtimes X$ of $\mathcal{A}$ by the natural action of $X$ on $\mathcal{A}$ is a well defined $C^*$-algebra and to each operator $A\in\mathscr{A}$ one may naturally associate a family of bounded operators $A_\varkappa$ on $L^2(X)$ indexed by …
We consider a non self-adjoint Laplacian on a directed graph with non symmetric edge weights. We give necessary conditions for this Laplacian to be sectorial. We introduce a special self-adjoint operator and compare its essential spectrum with that of the non self-adjoint Laplacian considered.
This work studies geometrical characterizations of the essential spectrum $σ_{\text ess}$ of Schrödinger operators on graphs. Especially we focus on generalizing characterizations which are given in terms of the concept of right limits. Intuitively the set of right limits of a Schrödinger operator $H$ on $\ell^2(\mathbb{N})$ includes the limit operators which are obtained by a sequence of left-shifts (moving away to infinity) of $H$. One characterization, which is known for such operators is that $σ_{\text ess}(H)$ is equal to the union over the spectra of right limits of $H$. Additionally, th…
We consider open manifolds which are interiors of a compact manifold with boundary, and Riemannian metrics asymptotic to a conformally cylindrical metric near the boundary. We show that the essential spectrum of the Laplace operator on functions vanishes under the presence of a magnetic field which does not define an integral relative cohomology class. It follows that the essential spectrum is not stable by perturbation even by a compactly supported magnetic field. We also treat magnetic operators perturbed with electric fields. In the same context we describe the essential spectrum of the $k$…
Let $H_0$ and $H$ be self-adjoint operators in a Hilbert space. In the scattering theory framework, we describe the essential spectrum of the difference $φ(H)-φ(H_0)$ for piecewise continuous functions $φ$. This description involves the scattering matrix for the pair $H$, $H_0$.
We describe essential (in particular Fredholm and semi-Fredholm) spectra of operators on Banach lattices of the form $T=wU$, where $w$ is a central operator and $U$ is a disjointness preserving operator such that its spectrum $σ(U)$ is a subset of the unit circle.
In this paper, we investigate spectral properties of discrete Laplacians. Our study is based on the Hardy inequality and the use of super-harmonic functions. We recover and improve lower bounds for the bottom of the spectrum and of the essential spectrum. In some situation, we obtain Weyl asymptotics for the eigenvalues. We also provide a probabilistic representation of super-harmonic functions. Using coupling arguments, we set comparison results for the bottom of the spectrum, the bottom of the essential spectrum and the stochastic completeness of different discrete Laplacians. The class of w…
It is shown the stability of the essential self-adjointness, and an inclusion of the essential spectra of Laplacians under the change of Riemannian metric on a subset K of M. The set K may have infinite volume measured with the new metric and its completion may contain a singular set such as fractal, to which the metric is not extendable.
Let $H_0$ and $H$ be self-adjoint operators in a Hilbert space. We consider the spectral projections of $H_0$ and $H$ corresponding to a semi-infinite interval of the real line. We discuss the index of this pair of spectral projections and prove an identity which extends the Birman-Schwinger principle onto the essential spectrum. We also relate this index to the spectrum of the scattering matrix for the pair $H_0$, $H$.
We consider discrete Schrödinger operators on the half line with potentials generated by the doubling map and continuous sampling functions. We show that the essential spectrum of these operators is always connected. This result is obtained by computing the subgroup of the range of the Schwartzman homomorphism associated with homotopy classes of continuous maps on the suspension of the standard solenoid that factor through the suspension of the doubling map and then showing that this subgroup characterizes the topological structure of the spectrum.
We shall prove that under some volume growth condition, the essential spectrum of the Laplacian contains the interval $[(n-1)^2K/4, \infty)$ if an $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifold has an end and the average of the part of the Ricci curvature on the end which lies below a nonpositive constant $(n-1)K$ converges to zero at infinity.
We consider operators arising from regular Dirichlet forms with vanishing killing term. We give bounds for the bottom of the (essential) spectrum in terms of exponential volume growth with respect to an intrinsic metric. As special cases we discuss operators on graphs. When the volume growth is measured in the natural graph distance (which is not an intrinsic metric) we discuss the threshold for positivity of the bottom of the spectrum and finiteness of the bottom of the essential spectrum of the (unbounded) graph Laplacian. This threshold is shown to lie at cubic polynomial growth.
We consider the plasmonic eigenvalue problem for a general 2D domain with a curvilinear corner, studying the spectral theory of the Neumann--Poincaré operator of the boundary. A limiting absorption principle is proved, valid when the spectral parameter approaches the essential spectrum. Putting the principle into use, it is proved that the corner produces absolutely continuous spectrum of multiplicity 1. The embedded eigenvalues are discrete. In particular, there is no singular continuous spectrum.
A complete analysis of the essential spectrum of matrix-differential operators $\mathcal A$ of the form \begin{align} \begin{pmatrix} -\displaystyle{\frac{\rm d}{\rm d t}} p \displaystyle{\frac{\rm d}{\rm d t}} + q & -\displaystyle{\frac{\rm d}{\rm d t}} b^* \! + c^* \\[2mm] \hspace{6mm} b \displaystyle{\frac{\rm d}{\rm d t}} + c & \hspace{4mm} D \end{pmatrix} \quad \text{in } \ L^2((α, β)) \oplus \bigl(L^2((α, β))\bigr)^n \label{mo} \end{align} singular at $β\in\mathbb R\cup\{\infty\}$ is given; the coefficient functions $p$, $q$ are scalar real-valued with $p>0$, $b$, $c$ are vector-valued, …
A phase-space anisotropic operator in H=L^2(R^n) is a self-adjoint operator whose resolvent family belongs to a natural C*-completion of the space of Hörmander symbols of order zero. Equivalently, each member of the resolvent family is norm-continuous under conjugation with the Schrödinger unitary representation of the Heisenberg group. The essential spectrum of such a phase-space anisotropic operator is the closure of the union of usual spectra of all its "phase-space asymptotic localizations", obtained as limits over diverging ultrafilters of R^{n}\times R^n-translations of the operator. The…
Exploiting the homogeneous structure of a wedge in the complex plane, we compute the spectrum of the anti-linear Ahlfors-Beurling transform acting on the associated Bergman space. Consequently, the similarity equivalence between the Ahlfors-Beurling transform and the Neumann-Poincare operator provides the spectrum of the latter integral operator on a wedge. A localization technique and conformal mapping lead to the first complete description of the essential spectrum of the Neumann-Poincare operator on a planar domain with corners, with respect to the energy norm of the associated harmonic fie…
This paper is a continuation of the study of spectral flow inside essential spectrum initiated in \cite{AzSFIES}. Given a point $λ$ outside the essential spectrum of a self-adjoint operator $H_0,$ the resonance set, $\mathcal R(λ),$ is an analytic variety which consists of self-adjoint relatively compact perturbations $H_0+V$ of $H_0,$ for which $λ$ is an eigenvalue. One may ask for criteria for the vector $V$ to be tangent to the resonance set. Such criteria were given in \cite{AzSFnRI}. In this paper we study similar criteria for the case of $λ$ inside the essential spectrum of $H_0.$ For th…
We study the existence and uniqueness of the heat kernel on infinite, locally finite, connected graphs. For general graphs, a uniqueness criterion, shown to be optimal, is given in terms of the maximal valence on spheres about a fixed vertex. A sufficient condition for non-uniqueness is also presented. Furthermore, we give a lower bound on the bottom of the spectrum of the discrete Laplacian and use this bound to give a condition ensuring that the essential spectrum of the Laplacian is empty.
We prove some results about the super Poincaré inequality (SPI) and its relation to the spectrum of an operator: we show that it can be alternatively written with Orlicz norms instead of L1 norms, and we use this to give an alternative proof that a bound on the bottom of the essential spectrum implies a SPI. Finally, we apply these ideas to give a spectral proof of the log Sobolev inequality for the Gaussian measure.
We characterize the spectrum and essential spectrum of "essentially linear fractional" composition operators acting on the Hardy space H-two of the open unit disc U. When the symbols of these composition operators have Denjoy-Wolff point on the unit circle, the spectrum and essential spectrum coincide. Our work permits us to describe the spectrum and essential spectrum of certain associated weighted composition operators on the Hardy space.
The purpose of this paper is to point out that `supremum' in two inequalities of Brooks should be replaced with `infimum'. The results of this paper are already known by Professor Higuci. Hence, I want to delete this paper from this preprint server.
Let $A(t)$ be a holomorphic family of self-adjoint operators of type (B) on a complex Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$. Kato-Rellich perturbation theory says that isolated eigenvalues of $A(t)$ will be analytic functions of $t$ as long as they remain below the minimum of the essential spectrum of $A(t)$. At a threshold value $t_0$ where one of these eigenvalue functions hits the essential spectrum, the corresponding point in the essential spectrum might or might not be an eigenvalue of $A(t_0)$. Our results generalize a theorem of Simon to give a sufficient condition for the minimum of the essentia…
