The linear stability of a steady state solution of 2D Euler equations of an ideal fluid is being studied. We give an explicit geometric construction of approximate eigenfunctions for the linearized Euler operator $L$ in vorticity form acting on Sobolev spaces on two dimensional torus. We study the spectral properties of the linearized Euler operator obtained by linearizing the equations of incompressible two dimensional fluid at a steady state with the vorticity that contains only two nonzero complex conjugate Fourier modes. We prove that the essential spectrum coincides with the imaginary axis, and give an estimate from above for the number of isolated nonimaginary eigenvalues. In addition, we prove that the spectral mapping theorem holds for the group generated by the linearized 2D Euler operator.

In this paper, we study a linearized two-dimensional Euler equation. This equation decouples into infinitely many invariant subsystems. Each invariant subsystem is shown to be a linear Hamiltonian system of infinite dimensions. Another important invariant besides the Hamiltonian for each invariant subsystem is found, and is utilized to prove an ``unstable disk theorem'' through a simple Energy-Casimir argument. In this paper, we use the central configuration coordinate decomposition to study the linearized Hamiltonian system near the elliptic Euler solutions. Then using the Maslov-type ω-index theory of symplectic paths and the theory of linear operators we compute the ω-indices and obtain certain properties of linear stability of the Euler elliptic solutions of the classical three-body problem.
