We study the spectral properties of the linearized Euler operator obtained by linearizing the equations of incompressible two dimensional fluid at a steady state with the vorticity that contains only two nonzero complex conjugate Fourier modes.
We prove that the essential spectrum coincides with the imaginary axis, and give an estimate from above for the number of isolated nonimaginary eigenvalues. In addition, we prove that the spectral mapping theorem holds for the group generated by the linearized 2D Euler operator.
In 1983, Antontsev, Kazhikhov, and Monakhov published a proof of the existence and uniqueness of solutions to the 3D Euler equations in which on certain inflow boundary components fluid is forced into the domain while on other outflow components fluid is drawn out of the domain. A key tool they used was the linearized Euler equations in vorticity form. We extend their result on the linearized problem to multiply connected domains and establish compatibility conditions on the initial data that allow higher regularity solutions.
We show that the linear brittle Griffith energy on a thin rectangle $Γ$-converges after rescaling to the linear one-dimensional brittle Euler-Bernoulli beam energy. In contrast to the existing literature, we prove a corresponding sharp compactness result, namely a suitable weak convergence after subtraction of piecewise rigid motions with the number of jumps bounded by the energy
The hydrodynamic evolution of self-gravitating gaseous stars is governed by the Euler-Poisson equations. We study the structure of the linear approximation of barotropic perturbations around spherically symmetric equilibria based on functional analytic tools. In contrast to folklore, we show that the spectrum of the linearized operator for general perturbations is not of the Sturm-Liouville type unless the perturbations are restricted. In particular, we prove that it is of the Sturm-Liouville type for irrotational perturbations.
This paper is concerned with the 2-dim two-phase interface Euler equation linearized at a pair of monotone shear flows in both fluids. We extend the Howard's Semicircle Theorem and study the eigenvalue distribution of the linearized Euler system. Under certain conditions, there are exactly two eigenvalues for each fixed wave number $k\in \mathbb{R}$ in the whole complex plane. We provide sufficient conditions for spectral instability arising from some boundary values of the shear flow velocity. A typical mode is the ocean-air system in which the density ratio of the fluids is sufficiently smal…
We show that space-time resonances induce high-frequency Raman instabilities in the two-fluid Euler-Maxwell system describing laser-plasma interactions. A consequence is that the Zakharov WKB approximation to Euler-Maxwell is unstable for non-zero group velocities. A key step in the proof is the reformulation of the set of resonant frequencies as the locus of weak hyperbolicity for linearized equations around the WKB solution. We analyze those linearized equations with the symbolic flow method. Due to large transverse variations in the WKB profile, the equation satisfied by the symbolic flow a…
In this paper we perform the analysis of spectral properties of the linearized system around constant states and dispersive shock for a 1-D compressible Euler system with dissipation--dispersion terms. The dispersive term is originated by the quantum effects described through the Bohm potential, as customary in Quantum Hydrodynamic models. The analysis performed in this paper includes the computation of the linearized operator and the spectral stability through the Evans function method.
We study stability of unidirectional flows for the linearized 2D $α$-Euler equations on the torus. The unidirectional flows are steady states whose vorticity is given by Fourier modes corresponding to a vector $\mathbf p \in \mathbb Z^{2}$. We linearize the $α$-Euler equation and write the linearized operator $L_{B} $ in $\ell^{2}(\mathbb Z^{2})$ as a direct sum of one-dimensional difference operators $L_{B,\mathbf q}$ in $\ell^{2}(\mathbb Z)$ parametrized by some vectors $\mathbf q\in\mathbb Z^2$ such that the set $\{\mathbf q +n \mathbf p:n \in \mathbb Z\}$ covers the entire grid $\mathbb Z^…
Dyadic models of the Euler equations were introduced as toy models to study the behaviour of an inviscid fluid in turbulence theory. In 1974 Novikov proposed a generalized mixed dyadic model that extends both Katz-Pavlovic and Obukhov models giving birth to a more complex structure: no results were found in literature until 2015 where blow up in finite time for smooth solutions and existence of self-similar solution for particular values of the model parameters were shown by Jeong I.J. We extend such partial results by giving a complete spectrum of existence and uniqueness results for two card…
We show the short-time existence and nonlinear stability of vortex sheets for the nonisentropic compressible Euler equations in two spatial dimensions, based on the weakly linear stability result of Morando--Trebeschi (2008) [20]. The missing normal derivatives are compensated through the equations of the linearized vorticity and entropy when deriving higher-order energy estimates. The proof of the resolution for this nonlinear problem follows from certain \emph{a priori} tame estimates on the effective linear problem {in the usual Sobolev spaces} and a suitable Nash--Moser iteration scheme.
We show existence, uniqueness and stability for a family of stationary subsonic compressible Euler flows with mass-additions in two-dimensional rectilinear ducts, subjected to suitable time-independent multi-dimensional boundary conditions at the entrances and exits. The stationary subsonic Euler equations consist a quasi-linear system of elliptic-hyperbolic composite-mixed type, while addition-of-mass destructs the usual methods based upon conservation of mass and Lagrangian coordinates to separate the elliptical and hyperbolic modes of the system. We establish a new decomposition and nonlinea…
On spectral stability of the nonlinear Dirac equation
The spectrum structure of the linearized relativistic Boltzmann equation around a global Maxwellian is studied in this paper. Based on the spectrum analysis, we establish the optimal time-convergence rates of the global solution to the Cauchy problem for the relativistic Boltzmann equation.
We give quantitative estimates on the asymptotics of the linearized Boltzmann collision operator and its associated equation from angular cutoff to non cutoff. On one hand, the results disclose the link between the hyperbolic property resulting from the Grad's cutoff assumption and the smoothing property due to the long-range interaction. On the other hand, with the help of the localization techniques in the phase space, we observe some new phenomenon in the asymptotic limit process. As a consequence, we give the affirmative answer to the question that there is no jump for the property that th…
We investigate solutions of the 2d incompressible Euler equations, linearized around steady states which are radially decreasing vortices. Our main goal is to understand the smoothness of what we call the spectral density function associated with the linearized operator, which we hope will be a step towards proving full nonlinear asymptotic stability of radially decreasing vortices. The motivation for considering the spectral density function is that it is not possible to describe the vorticity or the stream function in terms of one modulated profile. There are in fact two profiles, both at th…
This paper is concerned with the relativistic Boltzmann equation without angular cutoff. The non-cutoff theory for the relativistic Boltzmann equation has been rarely studied even under a smallness assumption on the initial data due to the lack of understanding of the spectrum and the need for coercivity estimates on the linearized collision operator. Namely, it is crucial to obtain the sharp asymptotics for the frequency multiplier to obtain this coercivity that has never been established before. In this paper, we prove the sharp asymptotics for the frequency multiplier for a general relativi…
We investigate the linear stability of inviscid columnar vortices with respect to finite energy perturbations. For a large class of vortex profiles, we show that the linearized evolution group has a sub-exponential growth in time, which means that the associated growth bound is equal to zero. This implies in particular that the spectrum of the linearized operator is entirely contained in the imaginary axis. This contribution complements the results of a previous work, where spectral stability was established for the linearized operator in the enstrophy space.
