We study the asymptotic linear stability of a two-parameter family of solitary waves for the isothermal Euler-Poisson system. When the linearized equations about the solitary waves are considered, the associated eigenvalue problem in $L^2$ space has a zero eigenvalue embedded in the neutral spectrum, i.e., there is no spectral gap. To resolve this issue, use is made of an exponentially weighted $L^2$ norm so that the essential spectrum is strictly shifted into the left-half plane, and this is closely related to the fact that solitary waves exist in the super-ion-sonic regime. Furthermore, in a certain long-wavelength scaling, we show that the Evans function for the Euler-Poisson system converges to that for the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation as an amplitude parameter tends to zero, from which we deduce that the origin is the only eigenvalue on its natural domain with algebraic multiplicity two. We also show that the solitary waves are spectrally stable in $L^2$ space. Moreover, we discuss (in)stability of large amplitude solitary waves.
The one-dimensional Euler-Poisson system arises in the study of phenomena of plasma such as plasma solitons, plasma sheaths, and double layers. When the system is rescaled by the Gardner-Morikawa transformation, the rescaled system is known to be formally approximated by the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation. In light of this, we show existence of solitary wave solutions of the Euler-Poisson system in the stretched moving frame given by the transformation, and prove that they converge to the solitary wave solution of the associated KdV equation as the small amplitude parameter tends to zero. Ou…
We construct global dissipative solutions on the torus of dimension at most three of the defocusing isothermal Euler-Langevin-Korteweg system, which corresponds to the Euler-Korteweg system of compressible quantum fluids with an isothermal pressure law and a linear drag term with respect to the velocity. In particular, the isothermal feature prevents the energy and the BD-entropy from being positive. Adapting standard approximation arguments we first show the existence of global weak solutions to the defocusing isothermal Navier-Stokes-Langevin-Korteweg system. Introducing a relative entropy f…
We consider the isothermal Euler system with damping. We rigorously show the convergence of Barenblatt solutions towards a limit Gaussian profile in the isothermal limit $γ$ $\rightarrow$ 1, and we explicitly compute the propagation and the behavior of Gaussian initial data. We then show the weak L 1 convergence of the density as well as the asymptotic behavior of its first and second moments. Contents 1. Introduction 1 2. Assumptions and main results 3 3. The travelling wave problem for a particular bidirectional Whitham system modelling surface water waves is under consideration. This system firstly appeared in [Dinvay, Dutykh, Kalisch 2018], where it was numerically shown to be stable and a good approximation to the incompressible Euler equations. In subsequent papers [Dinvay 2018], [Dinvay, Selberg, Tesfahun 2019] the initial-value problem was studied and well-posedness in classical Sobolev spaces was proved. Here we prove existence of solitary wave solutions and provide their asymptotic description. Our proof relies on a variational approac…
We show that the multi-dimensional compressible Euler system for isothermal flow of an ideal, polytropic gas admits global-in-time, radially symmetric solutions with unbounded amplitudes due to wave focusing. The examples are similarity solutions and involve a converging wave focusing at the origin. At time of collapse, the density, but not the velocity, becomes unbounded, resulting in an expanding shock wave. The solutions are constructed as functions of radial distance to the origin $r$ and time $t$. We verify that they provide genuine, weak solutions to the original, multi-d, isothermal Eul…
The Degasperis-Procesi equation is an approximating model of shallow-water wave propagating mainly in one direction to the Euler equations. Such a model equation is analogous to the Camassa-Holm approximation of the two-dimensional incompressible and irrotational Euler equations with the same asymptotic accuracy, and is integrable with the bi-Hamiltonian structure. In the present study, we establish existence and spectral stability results of localized smooth solitons to the Degasperis-Procesi equation on the real line. The stability proof relies essentially on refined spectral analysis of the…
Global solutions to the compressible Euler equations with heat transport by convection in the whole space are shown to exist through perturbations of Dyson's isothermal affine solutions. This setting presents new difficulties because of the vacuum at infinity behavior of the density. In particular, the perturbation of isothermal motion introduces a Gaussian function into our stability analysis and a novel finite propagation result is proven to handle potentially unbounded terms arising from the presence of the Gaussian. Crucial stabilization-in-time effects of the background motion are mitigat…

This article is the continued version of the analytical blowup solutions for 2-dimensional Euler-Poisson equations \cite{Y1}. With extension of the blowup solutions with radial symmetry for the isothermal Euler-Poisson equations in $R^{2}$, other special blowup solutions in $R^{2}$ with non-radial symmetry are constructed by the separation method. We notice that the results are the first evolutionary solutions with non-radial symmetry for the system. Compressible Euler-Poisson equations are the standard self-gravitating models for stellar dynamics in classical astrophysics. In this article, we construct periodic solutions to the isothermal ($γ=1$) Euler-Poisson equations in $R^{2}$ with possible applications to the formation of plate, spiral galaxies and the evolution of gas-rich, disk-like galaxies. The results complement Yuen's solutions without rotation (M.W. Yuen, Analytical Blowup Solutions to the 2-dimensional Isothermal Euler-Poisson Equations of Gaseous Stars, J. Math. Anal. Appl. 341(2008), 445--456.). Here, the periodic rotation …
We are concerned with the isothermal limit of entropy solutions in $L^\infty$, containing the vacuum states, of the Euler equations for isentropic gas dynamics. We prove that the entropy solutions in $L^\infty$ of the isentropic Euler equations converge strongly to the corresponding entropy solutions of the isothermal Euler equations, when the adiabatic exponent $γ\rightarrow 1$. This is achieved by combining careful entropy analysis and refined kinetic formulation with compensated compactness argument to obtain the required uniform estimates for the limit. The entropy analysis involves carefu…
In this paper we are concerned with the existence of transonic shocks for 2-D steady isothermal Euler flows in a horizontal flat nozzle under vertical gravity. In particular, we focus on the contribution of the vertical gravity in determining the position of the shock front. For steady horizontal flows, the existence of normal shocks with the position of the shock front being arbitrary in the nozzle can be easily established. This paper will try to determine the position of the shock front as the state of the flow at the entrance of the nozzle and the pressure at the exit are slightly perturbe…
We show that solitary waves for the 2D Euler-Korteweg model for capillary fluids display nonlinear instability when subjected to transverse perturbations.
Frequently encountered in nature, internal solitary waves in stratified fluids are well-observed and well-studied from the experimental, the theoretical, and the numerical perspective. From the mathematical point of view, these waves are exact solutions of the 2D Euler equations for incompressible, inviscid fluids. Contrasting with a rich theory for their existence and the development of methods for computing these waves, their stability analysis has hardly received attention at a rigorous mathematical level. This paper proposes a new approach to the investigation of stability of internal soli…
In a gas transport system, the customer behavior is uncertain. Motivated by this situation, we consider a boundary stabilization problem for the flow through a gas pipeline, where the outflow at one end of the pipe that is governed by the customer's behavior is uncertain. The control action is located at the other end of the pipe. The feedback law is a classical Neumann velocity feedback with a feedback parameter $k>0$. We show that as long as the $H^1$-norm of the function that describes the noise in the customer's behavior decays exponentially with a rate that is sufficiently large, the velo…
We consider two-dimensional inviscid irrotational flow in a two layer fluid under the effects of gravity and surface tension. The upper fluid is bounded above by a rigid lid, and the lower fluid is bounded below by a rigid bottom. We use a spatial dynamics approach and formulate the steady Euler equations as a Hamiltonian system, where we consider the unbounded horizontal coordinate $x$ as a time-like coordinate. The linearization of the Hamiltonian system is studied, and bifurcation curves in the $(β,α)$-plane are obtained, where $α$ and $β$ are two parameters. The curves depend on two additi…
We investigate the long-time behavior of solutions to the isothermal Euler, Korteweg or quantum Navier Stokes equations, as well as generalizations of these equations where the convex pressure law is asymptotically linear near vacuum. By writing the system with a suitable time-dependent scaling we prove that the densities of global solutions display universal dispersion rate and asymptotic profile. This result applies to weak solutions defined in an appropriate way. In the exactly isothermal case, we establish the compactness of bounded sets of such weak solutions, by introducing modified entr…
We investigate the initial-value problem for the relativistic Euler equations governing isothermal perfect fluid flows, and generalize an approach introduced by LeFloch and Shelukhin in the non-relativistic setting. We establish the existence of globally defined, bounded measurable, entropy solutions with arbitrary large amplitude. An earlier result by Smoller and Temple for the same system covered solutions with bounded variation that avoid the vacuum state. The new framework proposed here provides entropy solutions in a larger function space and allows for the mass density to vanish and the …
We study the quasineutral limit of the isothermal Euler-Poisson system describing a plasma made of ions and massless electrons. The analysis is achieved in a domain of $\R^3$ and thus extends former results by Cordier and Grenier [Comm. Partial Differential Equations, 25 (2000), pp.~1099--1113], who dealt with the same problem in a one-dimensional domain without boundary.
In this paper, we study the quasineutral limit of the isothermal Euler-Poisson equation for ions, in a domain with boundary. This is a follow-up to our previous work \cite{GVHKR}, devoted to no-penetration as well as subsonic outflow boundary conditions. We focus here on the case of supersonic outflow velocities. The structure of the boundary layers and the stabilization mechanism are different.
Liquid-vapor flows with phase transitions have a wide range of applications. Isothermal two-phase flows described by a single set of isothermal Euler equations, where the mass transfer is modeled by a kinetic relation, have been investigated analytically in (Quarterly of applied Mathematics, vol.\ LXXI 3 (2013), pp.\ 509-540.). This work was restricted to liquid water and its vapor modeled by linear equations of state. The focus of the present work lies on the generalization of the primary results to arbitrary substances, arbitrary equations of state and thus a more general kinetic relation. W…
In this paper, we are concerned with the long time behavior of the piecewise smooth solutions to the generalized Riemann problem governed by the compressible isothermal Euler equations in two and three dimensions. Non-existence result is established for the fan-shaped wave structure solution, including two shocks and one contact discontinuity and which is a perturbation of plane waves. Therefore, unlike the one-dimensional case, the multi-dimensional plane shocks are not stable globally. What is more, the sharp lifespan estimate is established which is the same as the lifespan estimate for the…
We consider the complete Euler system describing the time evolution of an inviscid non-isothermal gas. We show that the rarefaction wave solutions of the 1D Riemann problem are stable, in particular unique, in the class of all bounded weak solutions to the associated multi-D problem. This may be seen as a counterpart of the non-uniqueness results of physically admissible solutions emanating from 1D shock waves constructed recently by the method of convex integration.
This paper investigates the stability of traveling wave solutions to the free boundary Euler equations with a submerged point vortex. We prove that sufficiently small-amplitude waves with small enough vortex strength are conditionally orbitally stable. In the process of obtaining this result, we develop a quite general stability/instability theory for bound state solutions of a large class of infinite-dimensional Hamiltonian systems in the presence of symmetry. This is in the spirit of the seminal work of Grillakis, Shatah, and Strauss, but with hypotheses that are relaxed in a number of ways …
We consider in this paper the rigorous justification of the Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation from the Euler-Poisson system for uniformly magnetized plasmas. We first provide a proof of the local well-posedness of the Cauchy problem for the aforementioned system in dimensions two and three. Then we prove that the long-wave small-amplitude limit is described by the Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation. This is done first in the case of cold plasma; we then show how to extend this result in presence of the isothermal pressure term with uniform estimates when this latter goes to zero.
This paper analyzes various schemes for the Euler-Poisson-Boltzmann (EPB) model of plasma physics. This model consists of the pressureless gas dynamics equations coupled with the Poisson equation and where the Boltzmann relation relates the potential to the electron density. If the quasi-neutral assumption is made, the Poisson equation is replaced by the constraint of zero local charge and the model reduces to the Isothermal Compressible Euler (ICE) model. We compare a numerical strategy based on the EPB model to a strategy using a reformulation (called REPB formulation). The REPB scheme captu…
In this paper, we investigate the initial value problem for the Euler-Riesz system, where the interaction forcing is given by $\nabla(-Δ)^{s}ρ$ for some $-1<s<0$, with $s = -1$ corresponding to the classical Euler-Poisson system. We develop a functional framework to establish local-in-time existence and uniqueness of classical solutions for the Euler-Riesz system. In this framework, the fluid density could decay fast at infinity, and the Euler-Poisson system can be covered as a special case. Moreover, we prove local well-posedness for the pressureless Euler-Riesz system when the potential is r…
We study traveling wave solutions of an equation for surface waves of moderate amplitude arising as a shallow water approximation of the Euler equations for inviscid, incompressible and homogenous fluids. We obtain solitary waves of elevation and depression, including a family of solitary waves with compact support, where the amplitude may increase or decrease with respect to the wave speed. Our approach is based on techniques from dynamical systems and relies on a reformulation of the evolution equation as an autonomous Hamiltonian system which facilitates an explicit expression for bounded o…
We study the formation of singularity for the Euler-Poisson system equipped with the Boltzmann relation, which describes the dynamics of ions in an electrostatic plasma. In general, it is known that smooth solutions to nonlinear hyperbolic equations fail to exist globally in time. We establish criteria for $C^1$ blow-up of the Euler-Poisson system, both for the isothermal and pressureless cases. In particular, our blow-up condition for the presureless model does not require that the gradient of velocity is negatively large. In fact, our result particularly implies that the smooth solutions can…
The Riemann solutions to Chaplygin Euler equations with a scaled pressure are considered. When the pressure vanishes, there are three cases. The Riemann solution containing two shock waves converges to the delta shock wave solution of the transport equations. During this process, both the strength and propagation speed of the delta shock are investigated in detail. We find that there is something different from that for polytropic or isothermal gas. The Riemann solution containing two rarefaction waves tends to the two contact discontinuity solution to the transport equations as the pressure g…
This paper concerns the derivation of the Kinetic Isothermal Euler system in dimension $d \geq 1$ from an N-particle system of extended charges with Coulomb interaction. This requires a combined mean field and quasineutral limit for a regularized N-particle system.
Stability criteria have been derived and investigated in the last decades for many kinds of periodic traveling wave solutions to Hamiltonian PDEs. They turned out to depend in a crucial way on the negative signature of the Hessian matrix of action integrals associated with those waves. In a previous paper (Nonlinearity 2016), the authors addressed the characterization of stability of periodic waves for a rather large class of Hamiltonian partial differential equations that includes quasilinear generalizations of the Korteweg--de Vries equation and dispersive perturbations of the Euler equation…
The stability of periodic traveling wave solutions to dispersive PDEs with respect to `arbitrary' perturbations is still widely open. The focus is put here on stability with respect to perturbations of the same period as the wave, for KdV-like systems of one-dimensional Hamiltonian PDEs. Stability criteria are derived and investigated first in a general abstract framework, and then applied to three basic examples that are very closely related, and ubiquitous in mathematical physics, namely, a quasilinear version of the generalized Korteweg--de Vries equation (qKdV), and the Euler--Korteweg sys…
