We investigate the initial-value problem for the relativistic Euler equations governing isothermal perfect fluid flows, and generalize an approach introduced by LeFloch and Shelukhin in the non-relativistic setting. We establish the existence of globally defined, bounded measurable, entropy solutions with arbitrary large amplitude. An earlier result by Smoller and Temple for the same system covered solutions with bounded variation that avoid the vacuum state. The new framework proposed here provides entropy solutions in a larger function space and allows for the mass density to vanish and the velocity field to approach the speed of light. The relativistic Euler equations become strongly degenerate in both regimes, as the conservative or the flux variables vanish or blow-up. Our proof is based on the method of compensated compactness for nonlinear systems of conservation laws (Tartar, DiPerna) and takes advantage of a scaling invariance property of the isothermal fluid equations. We also rely on properties of the fundamental kernel that generates the mathematical entropy and entropy flux pairs. This kernel exhibits certain singularities on the boundary of its support and we are led to analyze certain nonconservative products (after Dal Maso, LeFloch, and Murat) consisting of functions of bounded variation by measures.

Compressible Euler-Poisson equations are the standard self-gravitating models for stellar dynamics in classical astrophysics. In this article, we construct periodic solutions to the isothermal ($γ=1$) Euler-Poisson equations in $R^{2}$ with possible applications to the formation of plate, spiral galaxies and the evolution of gas-rich, disk-like galaxies. The results complement Yuen's solutions without rotation (M.W. Yuen, Analytical Blowup Solutions to the 2-dimensional Isothermal Euler-Poisson Equations of Gaseous Stars, J. Math. Anal. We are concerned with the isothermal limit of entropy solutions in $L^\infty$, containing the vacuum states, of the Euler equations for isentropic gas dynamics. We prove that the entropy solutions in $L^\infty$ of the isentropic Euler equations converge strongly to the corresponding entropy solutions of the isothermal Euler equations, when the adiabatic exponent $γ\rightarrow 1$. This is achieved by combining careful entropy analysis and refined kinetic formulation with compensated compactness argument to obtain the required uniform estimates for the limit. The entropy analysis involves carefu…
We construct global dissipative solutions on the torus of dimension at most three of the defocusing isothermal Euler-Langevin-Korteweg system, which corresponds to the Euler-Korteweg system of compressible quantum fluids with an isothermal pressure law and a linear drag term with respect to the velocity. In particular, the isothermal feature prevents the energy and the BD-entropy from being positive. Adapting standard approximation arguments we first show the existence of global weak solutions to the defocusing isothermal Navier-Stokes-Langevin-Korteweg system. Introducing a relative entropy f…
We consider the isothermal Euler system with damping. We rigorously show the convergence of Barenblatt solutions towards a limit Gaussian profile in the isothermal limit $γ$ $\rightarrow$ 1, and we explicitly compute the propagation and the behavior of Gaussian initial data. We then show the weak L 1 convergence of the density as well as the asymptotic behavior of its first and second moments. Contents 1. Introduction 1 2. Assumptions and main results 3 3. We show that the multi-dimensional compressible Euler system for isothermal flow of an ideal, polytropic gas admits global-in-time, radially symmetric solutions with unbounded amplitudes due to wave focusing. The examples are similarity solutions and involve a converging wave focusing at the origin. At time of collapse, the density, but not the velocity, becomes unbounded, resulting in an expanding shock wave. The solutions are constructed as functions of radial distance to the origin $r$ and time $t$. We verify that they provide genuine, weak solutions to the original, multi-d, isothermal Eul…
Global solutions to the compressible Euler equations with heat transport by convection in the whole space are shown to exist through perturbations of Dyson's isothermal affine solutions. This setting presents new difficulties because of the vacuum at infinity behavior of the density. In particular, the perturbation of isothermal motion introduces a Gaussian function into our stability analysis and a novel finite propagation result is proven to handle potentially unbounded terms arising from the presence of the Gaussian. Crucial stabilization-in-time effects of the background motion are mitigat…
In this paper, we study the blowup phenomena for the regular solutions of the isentropic relativistic Euler-Poisson equations with a vacuum state in spherical symmetry. Using a general family of testing functions, we obtain new blowup conditions for the relativistic Euler-Poisson equations. We also show that the proposed blowup conditions are valid regardless of the speed requirement, which was one of the key constraints stated in "Y. Geng, Singularity Formation for Relativistic Euler and Euler-Poisson Equations with Repulsive Force, Commun. Pure Appl. Anal., 14 (2015), 549--564.".
We study the relativistic Euler equations on the Minkowski spacetime background. We make assumptions on the equation of state and the initial data that are relativistic analogs of the well-known physical vacuum boundary condition, which has played an important role in prior work on the non-relativistic compressible Euler equations. Our main result is the derivation, relative to Lagrangian (also known as co-moving) coordinates, of local-in-time a priori estimates for the solution. The solution features a fluid-vacuum boundary, transported by the fluid four-velocity, along which the hyperbolicit…
We analyze the relativistic Euler equations of conservation laws of baryon number and momentum with a general pressure law. The existence of global-in-time bounded entropy solutions for the system is established by developing a compensated compactness framework. The proof relies on a careful analysis of the entropy and entropy-flux functions, which are represented by the fundamental solutions of the entropy and entropy-flux equations for the relativistic Euler equations. Based on the careful entropy analysis, we establish a compactness framework for sequences of both exact solutions and approx…
In this paper, from an investigation of a symmetric hyperbolic system, a prior derivation of the logarithm equation of state is provided. Through a diffeomorphism transforming the classical Euler equations to the symmetric hyperbolic system, we show that the logarithm pressure co-exists with existing barotropic equations of state without applying any physical laws. In this connection, we also establish a local existence of classical solutions for the relativistic Euler equations with the logarithm equation of state.
In this paper, we are concerned with the non-relativistic limit of a class of computable approximation models for radiation hydrodynamics. The models consist of the compressible Euler equations coupled with moment closure approximations to the radiative transfer equation. They are first-order partial differential equations with source terms. As hyperbolic relaxation systems, they are showed to satisfy the structural stability condition proposed by W.-A. Yong (1999). Base on this, we verify the non-relativistic limit by combining an energy method with a formal asymptotic analysis.
We study the free boundary problem for the equations of compressible Euler equations with a vacuum boundary condition. Our main goal is to recover in Eulerian coordinates the earlier well-posedness result obtained by Lindblad [Lindblad H., Commun. Math. Phys. 260 (2005), 319-392] for the isentropic Euler equations and extend it to the case of full gas dynamics. For technical simplicity we consider the case of an unbounded domain whose boundary has the form of a graph and make short comments about the case of a bounded domain. We prove the local-in-time existence in Sobolev spaces by the techni…
In this paper we are concerned with the existence of transonic shocks for 2-D steady isothermal Euler flows in a horizontal flat nozzle under vertical gravity. In particular, we focus on the contribution of the vertical gravity in determining the position of the shock front. For steady horizontal flows, the existence of normal shocks with the position of the shock front being arbitrary in the nozzle can be easily established. This paper will try to determine the position of the shock front as the state of the flow at the entrance of the nozzle and the pressure at the exit are slightly perturbe…
In a gas transport system, the customer behavior is uncertain. Motivated by this situation, we consider a boundary stabilization problem for the flow through a gas pipeline, where the outflow at one end of the pipe that is governed by the customer's behavior is uncertain. The control action is located at the other end of the pipe. The feedback law is a classical Neumann velocity feedback with a feedback parameter $k>0$. We show that as long as the $H^1$-norm of the function that describes the noise in the customer's behavior decays exponentially with a rate that is sufficiently large, the velo…
We study the local-in-time hydrodynamic limit of the relativistic Boltzmann equation using a Hilbert expansion. More specifically, we prove the existence of local solutions to the relativistic Boltzmann equation that are nearby the local relativistic Maxwellian constructed from a class of solutions to the relativistic Euler equations that includes a large subclass of near-constant, non-vacuum fluid states. In particular, for small Knudsen number, these solutions to the relativistic Boltzmann equation have dynamics that are effectively captured by corresponding solutions to the relativistic Eul…
We investigate the long-time behavior of solutions to the isothermal Euler, Korteweg or quantum Navier Stokes equations, as well as generalizations of these equations where the convex pressure law is asymptotically linear near vacuum. By writing the system with a suitable time-dependent scaling we prove that the densities of global solutions display universal dispersion rate and asymptotic profile. This result applies to weak solutions defined in an appropriate way. In the exactly isothermal case, we establish the compactness of bounded sets of such weak solutions, by introducing modified entr…
We prove the existence of relative finite-energy vanishing viscosity solutions of the one-dimensional, isentropic Euler equations under the assumption of an asymptotically isothermal pressure law, that is, $p(ρ)/ρ= O(1)$ in the limit $ρ\to \infty$. This solution is obtained as the vanishing viscosity limit of classical solutions of the one-dimensional, isentropic, compressible Navier--Stokes equations. Our approach relies on the method of compensated compactness to pass to the limit rigorously in the nonlinear terms. Key to our strategy is the derivation of hyperbolic representation formulas f…
In this paper the author studies the singular limit c to infinity of the family of Euler-Nordström systems indexed by the parameters kappa and c (EN_kappa,c), where kappa^2 > 0 is the cosmological constant and c is the speed of light. Using Christodoulou's techniques to generate energy currents, the author develops Sobolev estimates that show that for initial data belonging to an appropriate Sobolev space, as c tends to infinity, the solutions to the EN_kappa,c system converge uniformly on a spacetime slab [0,T]xR^3 to the solution of the Euler-Poisson system with the cosmological constant kap…
We study the quasineutral limit of the isothermal Euler-Poisson system describing a plasma made of ions and massless electrons. The analysis is achieved in a domain of $\R^3$ and thus extends former results by Cordier and Grenier [Comm. Partial Differential Equations, 25 (2000), pp.~1099--1113], who dealt with the same problem in a one-dimensional domain without boundary.
We study the singularity formation of smooth solutions of the relativistic Euler equations in $(3+1)$-dimensional spacetime for both finite initial energy and infinite initial energy. For the finite initial energy case, we prove that any smooth solution, with compactly supported non-trivial initial data, blows up in finite time. For the case of infinite initial energy, we first prove the existence, uniqueness and stability of a smooth solution if the initial data is in the subluminal region away from the vacuum. By further assuming the initial data is a smooth compactly supported perturbation …
With the previous results for the analytical blowup solutions of the N-dimensional Euler-Poisson equations, we extend the similar structure to construct an analytical family of solutions for the isothermal Navier-Stokes equations and pressureless Navier-Stokes equations with density-dependent viscosity.
In this paper, we study the quasineutral limit of the isothermal Euler-Poisson equation for ions, in a domain with boundary. This is a follow-up to our previous work \cite{GVHKR}, devoted to no-penetration as well as subsonic outflow boundary conditions. We focus here on the case of supersonic outflow velocities. The structure of the boundary layers and the stabilization mechanism are different.
We study the Cauchy problem associated with the system of two conservation laws arising in isothermal gas dynamics, in which the pressure and the density are related by the $γ$-law equation $p(ρ) \sim ρ^γ$ with $γ=1$. Our results complete those obtained earlier for $γ>1$. We prove the global existence and compactness of entropy solutions generated by the vanishing viscosity method. The proof relies on compensated compactness arguments and symmetry group analysis. Interestingly, we make use here of the fact that the isothermal gas dynamics system is invariant modulo a linear scaling of the dens…
Liquid-vapor flows with phase transitions have a wide range of applications. Isothermal two-phase flows described by a single set of isothermal Euler equations, where the mass transfer is modeled by a kinetic relation, have been investigated analytically in (Quarterly of applied Mathematics, vol.\ LXXI 3 (2013), pp.\ 509-540.). This work was restricted to liquid water and its vapor modeled by linear equations of state. The focus of the present work lies on the generalization of the primary results to arbitrary substances, arbitrary equations of state and thus a more general kinetic relation. W…
Our results provide a first step to make rigorous the formal analysis in terms of $\frac{1}{c^2}$ proposed by Chandrasekhar \cite{Chandra65b}, \cite{Chandra65a}, motivated by the methods of Einstein, Infeld and Hoffmann, see Thorne \cite{Thorne1}. We consider the non-relativistic limit for the local smooth solutions to the free boundary value problem of the cylindrically symmetric relativistic Euler equations, when the mass energy density includes the vacuum states at the free boundary. For large enough (rescaled) speed of light $c$ and suitably small time $T,$ we obtain uniform, with respect …
In this paper, we are concerned with the long time behavior of the piecewise smooth solutions to the generalized Riemann problem governed by the compressible isothermal Euler equations in two and three dimensions. Non-existence result is established for the fan-shaped wave structure solution, including two shocks and one contact discontinuity and which is a perturbation of plane waves. Therefore, unlike the one-dimensional case, the multi-dimensional plane shocks are not stable globally. What is more, the sharp lifespan estimate is established which is the same as the lifespan estimate for the…
We prove a local existence theorem for the free boundary problem for a relativistic fluid in a fixed spacetime. Our proof involves an a priori estimate which only requires control of derivatives tangential to the boundary, which holds also in the Newtonian compressible case.
We prove a global existence theorem for the $3\times 3$ system of relativistic Euler equations in one spacial dimension. It is shown that in the ultra-relativistic limit, there is a family of equations of state that satisfy the second law of thermodynamics for which solutions exist globally. With this limit and equation of state, which includes equations of state for both an ideal gas and one dominated by radiation, the relativistic Euler equations can be analyzed by a Nishida-type method leading to a large data existence theorem, including the entropy and particle number evolution, using a Gl…

We consider in this paper the rigorous justification of the Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation from the Euler-Poisson system for uniformly magnetized plasmas. We first provide a proof of the local well-posedness of the Cauchy problem for the aforementioned system in dimensions two and three. Then we prove that the long-wave small-amplitude limit is described by the Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation. This is done first in the case of cold plasma; we then show how to extend this result in presence of the isothermal pressure term with uniform estimates when this latter goes to zero.
This paper analyzes various schemes for the Euler-Poisson-Boltzmann (EPB) model of plasma physics. This model consists of the pressureless gas dynamics equations coupled with the Poisson equation and where the Boltzmann relation relates the potential to the electron density. If the quasi-neutral assumption is made, the Poisson equation is replaced by the constraint of zero local charge and the model reduces to the Isothermal Compressible Euler (ICE) model. We compare a numerical strategy based on the EPB model to a strategy using a reformulation (called REPB formulation). The REPB scheme captu…
The relativistic full Euler equations for a Chaplygin gas are studied. The Riemann problem is solved constructively. There are two kinds of Riemann solutions, in which one consists of three contact discontinuities and the other involves a delta shock wave on which both state variables the rest mass density and the proper energy density simultaneously contain the Dirac delta functions. It is quite different from the previous ones on which only one state variable contains the Dirac delta function. The formation mechanism, generalized Rankine-Hugoniot relation and entropy condition are clarified …
We study the critical thresholds for the compressible pressureless Euler equations with pairwise attractive or repulsive interaction forces and non-local alignment forces in velocity in one dimension. We provide a complete description for the critical threshold to the system without interaction forces leading to a sharp dichotomy condition between global in time existence or finite-time blow-up of strong solutions. When the interaction forces are considered, we also give a classification of the critical thresholds according to the different type of interaction forces. We also analyze condition…
This paper studies the global existence and uniqueness of strong solutions and its large-time behavior for the compressible isothermal Euler equations with a nonlocal dissipation. The system is rigorously derived from the kinetic Cucker-Smale flocking equation with strong local alignment forces and diffusions through the hydrodynamic limit based on the relative entropy argument. In a perturbation framework, we establish the global existence of a unique strong solution for the system under suitable smallness and regularity assumptions on the initial data. We also provide the large-time behavior…
This paper contributes to the study of large data problems for $C^1$ solutions of the relativistic Euler equations. In the $(1+1)$-dimensional spacetime setting, if the initial data are away from vacuum, a key difficulty in proving the global well-posedness or finite time blow-up is coming up with a way to obtain sharp enough control on the lower bound of the mass-energy density function $ρ$. First, for $C^1$ solutions of the 1-dimensional classical isentropic compressible Euler equations in the Eulerian setting, we show a novel idea of obtaining a mass density time-dependent lower bound by st…
