We conduct a rigorous investigation into the thermodynamic instability of ideal Bose gas confined in a cubic box, without assuming thermodynamic limit nor continuous approximation. Based on the exact expression of canonical partition function, we perform numerical computations up to the number of particles one million. We report that if the number of particles is equal to or greater than a certain critical value, which turns out to be 7616, the ideal Bose gas subject to Dirichlet boundary condition reveals a thermodynamic instability. Accordingly we demonstrate - for the first time - that, a system consisting of finite number of particles can exhibit a discontinuous phase transition featuring a genuine mathematical singularity, provided we keep not volume but pressure constant. The specific number, 7616 can be regarded as a characteristic number of 'cube' that is the geometric shape of the box.
We present a scheme of analytical calculations determining the critical temperature and the number of condensed atoms of ideal gas Bose-Einstein condensation in external potentials with 1D, 2D or 3D periodicity. In particular we show that the width of the lowest energy band appears as the main parameter determining the critical temperature of condensation. Is obtained a very simple, proportional to 1/3 degree, regularity for this dependence. The fundamental role of tunneling in physics of condensate establishment is underscored.
A self consistent theory of a cigar shaped Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) periodically modulated by a laser beam is presented. We show, both theoretically and numerically, that modulational instability/stability is the mechanism by which wavefunctions of soliton type can be generated in cigar shaped BEC subject to a 1D optical lattice. The theory explains why bright solitons can exist in BEC with positive scattering length and why condensate with negative scattering length can be stable and give rise to dark solitary pulses.
Light bosonic (axion-like) dark matter may form Bose stars - clumps of nonrelativistic Bose-Einstein condensate supported by self-gravity. We study rotating Bose stars composed of condensed particles with nonzero angular momentum $l$. We analytically prove that these objects are unstable at arbitrary $l \ne 0$ if particle self-interactions are attractive or negligibly small. They decay by shedding off the particles and transporting the angular momentum to the periphery of the system until a Saturn-like configuration appears: one (or several) spin-zero Bose stars and clouds of diffuse particles…
The dissipative dynamics of a vortex in a finite temperature trapped Bose-Einstein condensate are shown to be governed by a {\em diffusive instability}. In the weakly interacting regime we find a cross-over from instability to metastability of the vortex, determined only by the relative rotation rate of the vortex and thermal cloud. Even in the thermodynamically stable regime there is a finite lifetime arising from diffusive instability. We find the mean exit time for the vortex from the condensate, and show that near the critical frequency for thermodynamic stability the lifetime has a univer…
We study the Bose-Einstein condensation for a 3-d system of ideal Bose gas which is harmonically trapped along two perpendicular directions and is confined in between two slabs along the other perpendicular direction. We calculate the Casimir force between the two slabs for this system of trapped Bose gas. At finite temperatures this force for thermalized photons in between two plates has a classical expression which is independent of $\hbar$. At finite temperatures the Casimir force for our system depends on $\hbar$. For the calculation of Casimir force we consider only the Dirichlet boundary…
In this paper we show that for a non-ideal Bose gas there exists an upper limit on the transition temperature above which Bose-Einstein condensation cannot occur regardless of the pressure applied. Such upper limits for some realistic Bose gases are estimated. This result implies that there may also exist an upper limit on the transition temperature of superconductors.
We study the Casimir effect for a 3-d system of ideal Bose gas in a slab geometry with Dirichlet boundary condition. We calculate the temperature($T$) dependence of the Casimir force below and above the Bose-Einstein condensation temperature($T_c$). At $T\le T_c$ the Casimir force vanishes as $[\frac{T}{T_c}]^{3/2}$. For $T\gtrsim T_c$ it weakly depends on temperature. For $T\gg T_c$ it vanishes exponentially. At finite temperatures this force for thermalized photons in between two plates has a classical expression which is independent of $\hbar$. At finite temperatures the Casimir force for o…
The ideal Bose-gas with finite number $N$ of particles is investigated. The exact expressions for the partition functions and occupation numbers in the grand canonical, canonical and microcanonical ensembles are found. The asymp\-totic expressions (in the case $N\gg1$) for the partition functions and occupation numbers in the canonical and microcanonical ensembles are evaluated. It is shown that the chemical potential $μ$ of the ideal Bose-gas can lie in the range $-\infty<μ<\infty$ oppositely to the widely adopted opinion that the value of this potential is negative.
The ideal uniform two-dimensional (2D) Fermi and Bose gases are considered both in the thermodynamic limit and the finite case. We derive May's Theorem, viz. the correspondence between the internal energies of the Fermi and Bose gases in the thermodynamic limit. This results in both gases having the same heat capacity. However, as we shall show, the thermodynamic limit is never truly reached in two dimensions and so it is essential to consider finite-size effects. We show in an elementary manner that for the finite 2D Bose gas, a pseudo-Bose-Einstein condensate forms at low temperatures, incom…
Physical properties of ideal Bose gas with the fractal dimensionality between D=2 and D=3 are theoretically investigated. Calculation shows that the characteristic features of the specific heat and the superfluid density of ideal Bose gas in fractal dimensions are strikingly similar to those of superfluid Helium-4 in porous media. This result indicates that the geometrical factor is dominant over mutual interactions in determining physical properties of Helium-4 in porous media.
We study the pairing instability and mechanical collapse of a dilute homogeneous bose gas with an attractive interaction. The pairing phase is found to be a saddle point, unstable against pairing fluctuations. This pairing saddle point exists above a critical temperature. Below this critical temperature, the system is totally unstable in the pairing channel. Thus the system could collapse in the pairing channel in addition to mechanical collapse. The critical temperatures of pairing instability and mechanical collapse are higher than the BEC temperature of an ideal bose gas with the same densi…
We investigate the fluctuations of the condensate in the ideal and weakly interacting Bose gases confined in a box of volume V within canonical ensemble. Canonical ensemble is developed to describe the behavior of the fluctuations when different methods of approximation to the weakly interacting Bose gases are used. Research shows that the fluctuations of the condensate exhibit anomalous behavior for the interacting Bose gas confined in a box.
The Casimir effect of an ideal Bose gas trapped in a generic power-law potential and confined between two slabs with Dirichlet, Neumann, and periodic boundary conditions is investigated systematically, based on the grand potential of the ideal Bose gas, the Casimir potential and force are calculated. The scaling function is obtained and discussed. The special cases of free and harmonic potentials are also discussed. It is found that when T<Tc (where Tc is the critical temperature of Bose-Einstein condensation), the Casimir force is a power-law decay function; when T>Tc, the Casimir force is an…
We explore the phase transitions of the ideal relativistic neutral Bose gas confined in a cubic box, without assuming the thermodynamic limit nor continuous approximation. While the corresponding non-relativistic canonical partition function is essentially a one-variable function depending on a particular combination of temperature and volume, the relativistic canonical partition function is genuinely a two-variable function of them. Based on an exact expression of the canonical partition function, we performed numerical computations for up to hundred thousand particles. We report that if the …
We consider an ideal Bose gas contained in a cylinder in three spatial dimensions, subjected to a uniform gravitational field. It has been claimed by some authors that there is discrepancy between the semi-classical and quantum calculations in the thermal properties of such a system. To check this claim, we calculate the heat capacity and isothermal compressibility of this system semi-classically as well as from the quantum spectrum of the density of states. The quantum calculation is done for a finite number of particles. We find good agreement between the two calculations when the number of …
We study properties of magnetic field-induced Bose-Einstein condensate of triplons as a function of temperature and the field within the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approach including the anomalous density. We show that the magnetization is continuous across the transition, in agreement with the experiment. In sufficiently strong fields the condensate becomes unstable due to triplon-triplon repulsion. As a result, the system is characterized by two critical magnetic fields: one producing the condensate and the other destroying it. We show that nonparabolic triplon dispersion arising due to the gap…
We investigate the isobar of an ideal Bose gas confined in a cubic box within the grand canonical ensemble, for a large yet finite number of particles, N. After solving the equation of the spinodal curve, we derive precise formulae for the supercooling and the superheating temperatures which reveal an N^{-1/3} or N^{-1/4} power correction to the known Bose-Einstein condensation temperature in the thermodynamic limit. Numerical computations confirm the accuracy of our analytical approximation, and further show that the isobar zigzags on the temperature-volume plane if N is greater than or equal…
We discuss the relationship between the cycle probabilities in the path-integral representation of the ideal Bose gas, off-diagonal long-range order, and Bose--Einstein condensation. Starting from the Landsberg recursion relation for the canonic partition function, we use elementary considerations to show that in a box of size L^3 the sum of the cycle probabilities of length k >> L^2 equals the off-diagonal long-range order parameter in the thermodynamic limit. For arbitrary systems of ideal bosons, the integer derivative of the cycle probabilities is related to the probability of condensing k…
Using a field-theoretic approach, we systematically generalize the usual semiclassical approximation for a harmonically trapped ideal Bose gas in such a way that its range of applicability is essentially extended. With this we can analytically calculate thermodynamic properties even for small particle numbers. In particular, it now becomes possible to determine the critical temperature as well as the temperature dependence of both heat capacity and condensate fraction in low-dimensional traps, where the standard semiclassical approximation is not even applicable.
We study an ideal Bose gas of N atoms contained in a box formed by two identical planar and parallel surfaces S, enclosed by a mantle of height a perpendicular to them. Calling r0 the mean atomic distance, we assume S >> r0^2 while a may be comparable to r0. In the bidimensional limit (a/r0 << 1) we find a macroscopic number of atoms in the condensate at temperatures T ~1/log(N); therefore, condensation cannot be described in terms of intensive quantities; in addition, it occurs at temperatures not too low in comparison to the tridimensional case. When condensation is present we also find a ma…
In an ideal Bose gas that is driven into a steady state far from thermal equilibrium, a generalized form of Bose condensation can occur. Namely, the single-particle states unambiguously separate into two groups: the group of Bose-selected states, whose occupations increase linearly with the total particle number, and the group of all other states whose occupations saturate [Phys. Rev. Lett. 111, 240405 (2013)]. However, so far very little is known about how the number of Bose-selected states depends on the properties of the system and its coupling to the environment. The answer to this questio…
In a recent experiment, a Bose-Einstein condensate was trapped in an anharmonic potential which is well approximated by a harmonic and a quartic part. The condensate was set into such a fast rotation that the centrifugal force in the corotating frame overcompensates the harmonic part in the plane perpendicular to the rotation axis. Thus, the resulting trap potential became Mexican-hat shaped. We present an analysis for an ideal Bose gas which is confined in such an anharmonic rotating trap within a semiclassical approximation where we calculate the critical temperature, the condensate fraction…
The formalism of Ursell operators provides a self-consistent integral equation for the one-particle reduced operator. In three dimensions this technique yields values of the shift in the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) transition temperature, as a function of the scattering length, that are in good agreement with those of Green's function and quantum Monte Carlo methods. We have applied the same equations to a uniform two-dimensional system and find that, as we alter the chemical potential, an instability develops so that the self-consistent equations no longer have a solution. This instabili…
Based on the canonical ensemble, we suggested the simple scheme for taking into account Gaussian fluctuations in a finite system of ideal boson gas. Within framework of scheme we investigated the influence of fluctuations on the particle distribution in Bose -gas for two cases - with taking into account the number of particles in the ground state and without this assumption. The temperature and fluctuation parameter dependences of the modified Bose- Einstein distribution have been determined. Also the dependence of the condensation temperature on the fluctuation distribution parameter has been…
We investigate perturbative thermodynamic geometry of nonextensive ideal Classical, Bose and Fermi gases. We show that the intrinsic statistical interaction of nonextensive Bose (Fermi) gas is attractive (repulsive) similar to the extensive case but the value of thermodynamic curvature is changed by nonextensive parameter. In contrary to the extensive ideal classical gas, the nonextensive one may be divided to two different regimes. According to deviation parameter of the system to the nonextensive case, one can find a special value of fugacity, $z^{*}$, where the sign of thermodynamic curvatur…
In this study, we have derived close form of the Casimir force for the non-interacting ideal Bose gas between two slabs in harmonic-optical lattice potential by using Ketterle and van Druten approximation. We find that Bose-Einstein condensation temperature $T_{c}$ is a critical point for different physical behavior of the Casimir force. We have shown that Casimir force of confined Bose gas in the presence of the harmonic-optical potential decays with inversely proportional to $d^{5}$ when $T\leq T_{c}$. However, in the case of $T>T_{c}$, it decays exponentially depends on separation $d$ of th…
A Bose gas in an external potential is studied by means of the local density approximation. Analytical results are derived for the thermodynamic properties of an ideal Bose gas in a generic power-law trapping potential, and their dependence on the mutual interaction of atoms in the case of a non-ideal Bose gas.
How many $\mathrm{H_{2}O}$ molecules are needed to form water? While the precise answer is not known, it is clear that the answer should be a finite number rather than infinity. We revisit with care the ideal Bose gas confined in a cubic box which is discussed in most statistical physics textbooks. We show that the isobar of the ideal gas zigzags on the temperature-volume plane featuring a `boiling-like' discrete phase transition, provided the number of particles is equal to or greater than a particular value: 7616. This demonstrates for the first time how a finite system can feature a mathema…
We study the behaviour of an ideal non-relativistic Bose gas in a three-dimensional space where one of the dimensions is compactified to form a circle. In this case there is no phase transition like that for the case of an infinite volume, nevertheless Bose-Einstein condensation signified by a sudden buildup of particles in the ground state can occur. We use the grand canonical ensemble to study this problem. In particular, the specific heat is evaluated numerically, as well as analytically in certain limits. We show analytically how the familiar result for the specific heat is recovered as we…
We show that the recently discovered thermodynamic equivalence between noninteracting Bose and Fermi gases in two dimensions, and between one-dimensional Bose and Fermi systems with linear dispersion, both in the grand-canonical ensemble, are special cases of a larger class of equivalences of noninteracting systems having an energy-independent single-particle density of states. We also conjecture that the same equivalence will hold in the grand-canonical ensemble for any noninteracting quantum gas with a discrete ladder-type spectrum whenever $σΔ/ N k_{\rm B} T$ is small, where $N$ is the aver…
We analyze the Casimir forces for an ideal Bose gas enclosed between two infinite parallel walls separated by the distance D. The walls are characterized by the Dirichlet boundary conditions. We show that if the thermodynamic state with Bose-Einstein condensate present is correctly approached along the path pertinent to the Dirichlet b.c. then the leading term describing the large-distance decay of thermal Casimir force between the walls is 1/D^2 with a non-universal amplitude. The next order correction is lnD/D^3. These observations remain in contrast with the decay law for both the periodic …
We study the charged non-relativistic Bose gas interacting with a constant magnetic field but which is otherwise free. The notion of Bose-Einstein condensation for the three dimensional case is clarified, and we show that although there is no condensation in the sense of a phase transition, there is still a maximum in the specific heat which can be used to define a critical temperature. Although the absence of a phase transition persists for all values of the magnetic field, we show how as the magnetic field is reduced the curves for the specific heat approach the free field curve. For large v…
Using semiclassical approximation method, Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of a relativistic ideal boson gas (RIBG) with and without antibosons in three-dimensional (3-D) harmonic traps is investigated. The BEC transition temperature T_{c} and the Helmholtz free energy at T_{c} are calculated. The effect of the rest mass of the boson on the properties of the system is also studied. We find that T_{c} of RIBG is higher than that of the nonrelativistic approximation. The RIBG with antibosons is also investigated and it is found that the Helmholtz free energy of the system with antibosons at T_{c…
A relativistic complex scalar boson field at finite temperature $T$ is examined below its critical Bose-Einstein condensation temperature. It is shown that at the same $T$ the state with antibosons has higher entropy, lower Helmholtz free energy and higher pressure than the state without antibosons, but the same Gibbs free energy as it should. This implies that the configuration without antibosons is metastable. Results are generalized for arbitrary $d$ spatial dimensions.
The mean ground state occupation number and condensate fluctuations of interacting and non-interacting Bose gases confined in a harmonic trap are considered by using a canonical ensemble approach. To obtain the mean ground state occupation number and the condensate fluctuations, an analytical description for the probability distribution function of the condensate is provided directly starting from the analysis of the partition function of the system. For the ideal Bose gas, the probability distribution function is found to be a Gaussian one for the case of the harmonic trap. For the interactin…
We show that an Ideal Bose gas that is contained within a very thin ring exhibits phenomena analogous to the Bloch and Josephson oscillations of a charged Ideal Fermi gas in a thin ring. If the walls of the ring are constrained to have an angular velocity $ω$, the angular momentum has an anomalous component that is periodic in $ω$, with a period equal to the quantum of angular velocity $ω_{0}\equiv \hbar /mR^{2}$. If a constant applied torque is applied to the walls, there will be component of the angular momentum of the gas that is periodic in time, with a 'Josephson frequency' given by $f_{J…
