Using a field-theoretic approach, we systematically generalize the usual semiclassical approximation for a harmonically trapped ideal Bose gas in such a way that its range of applicability is essentially extended. With this we can analytically calculate thermodynamic properties even for small particle numbers. In particular, it now becomes possible to determine the critical temperature as well as the temperature dependence of both heat capacity and condensate fraction in low-dimensional traps, where the standard semiclassical approximation is not even applicable.
We theoretically study the collective excitations of an ideal gas confined in an isotropic harmonic trap. We give an exact solution to the Boltzmann-Vlasov equation; as expected for a single-component system, the associated mode frequencies are integer multiples of the trapping frequency. We show that the expressions found by the scaling ansatz method are a special case of our solution. Our findings, however, are most useful in case the trap contains more than one phase: we demonstrate how to obtain the oscillation frequencies in case an interface is present between the ideal gas and a differe…
We solve the problem of a Bose or Fermi gas in $d$-dimensions trapped by $% δ\leq d$ mutually perpendicular harmonic oscillator potentials. From the grand potential we derive their thermodynamic functions (internal energy, specific heat, etc.) as well as a generalized density of states. The Bose gas exhibits Bose-Einstein condensation at a nonzero critical temperature $T_{c}$ if and only if $d+δ>2$, and a jump in the specific heat at $T_{c}$ if and only if $d+δ>4$. Specific heats for both gas types precisely coincide as functions of temperature when $d+δ=2$. The trapped system behaves like an …
We investigate the particle and kinetic energy densities of harmonically trapped fermion gases at zero temperature in arbitrary dimensions. We derive analytically a differential equation connecting these densities, which so far have been proven only in one or two dimensions, and give other interesting relations involving several densities or the particle density alone. We show that in the asymptotic limit of large particle numbers, the densities go over into the semi-classical Thomas-Fermi (TF) densities. Hereby the Fermi energy to be used in the TF densities is identified uniquely. We derive …
In this paper the thermodynamical parameters of a condensed Boson gas are calculated from the partial derivative of the grand potential. In particular, the analytical expressions for some important parameters, such as the condensed fraction, specific heat, critical temperature, effective size, and release energy are investigated. The mean effects which can be altered the ideal Bose gas, such as finite size, highly anisotropic of the external potential and interatomic interaction effects are considered simultaneously. Some new characteristics of the trapped interacting Bose gases in a highly an…
We investigate the width of the Ginzburg critical region and experimental signatures of critical behavior in strongly interacting trapped Fermi gases close to unitarity, where the s-wave scattering length diverges. Despite the fact that the width of the critical region is of the order unity, evidence of critical behavior in the bulk thermodynamics of trapped gases is strongly suppressed by their inhomogeneity. The specific heat of a harmonically confined gas, for instance, is \textit{linear} in the reduced temperature $t = (T-T_{\mathrm{c}})/T_{\mathrm{c}}$ above $T_{\mathrm{c}}$. We also disc…
We theoretically examine equilibrium properties of the harmonically trapped ideal Bose and Fermi gases in the quantum degeneracy regime. We analyze thermodynamic characteristics of gases with a finite number of atoms by means of the known semiclassical approach and perform comparison with exact numerical results. For a Fermi gas, we demonstrate deviations in the Fermi energy values originating from a discrete level structure and show that these are observable only for a small number of particles. For a Bose gas, we observe characteristic softening of phase transition features, which contrasts …
We have analytically explored thermodynamics of free Bose and Fermi gases for the entire range of temperature, and have extended the same for harmonically trapped cases. We have obtained approximate chemical potentials of the quantum gases in closed forms of temperature so that the thermodynamic properties of the quantum gases become plausible specially in the intermediate regime between the classical and quantum limits.
A generalization of the semiclassical approximation is suggested allowing for an essential extension of its region of applicability. In particular, it becomes possible to describe Bose-Einstein condensation of a trapped gas in low-dimensional traps and in traps of low confining dimensions, for which the standard semiclassical approximation is not applicable. The results of the modified approach are shown to coincide with purely quantum-mechanical calculations for harmonic traps, including the one-dimensional harmonic trap. The advantage of the semiclassical approximation is in its simplicity a…
Fluctuations of the amplitude of the order parameter govern the properties of superconducting systems close to the critical transition temperature. In the BCS regime we examine the contribution of these pairing fluctuations to the superfluid order parameter for harmonically confined atomic Fermi gases. In the limit of small systems we obtain an expression for the space dependence of the fluctuations, in good agreement with the results of numerical calculations. In this limit we also predict a parity effect, i.e. that pairing fluctuations should show a maximum or a minimum at the centre of the …
A semiclassical method is used to study Landau damping of transverse pseudo-spin waves in harmonically trapped ultracold gases in the collisionless Boltzmann limit. In this approach, the time evolution of a spin is calculated numerically as it travels in a classical orbit through a spatially dependent mean field. This method reproduces the Landau damping results for spin-waves in unbounded systems obtained with a dielectric formalism. In trapped systems, the simulations indicate that Landau damping occurs for a given spin-wave mode because of resonant phase space trajectories in which spins ar…
We present a semiclassical treatment of a fermionic impurity coupled to Bogolyubov modes of a BEC. In the lowest order approximation we find a full solution of an initial value problem, which turns out to behave differently in the sub- and supersonic regimes. While in the former case no impurity deceleration is observed, in the latter case non-Markovian dissipation effects kick in resulting in slowing down of the fermion. Although this scenario is compatible with the one offered by an elementary field theoretical picture at weak coupling, the details of the dynamics turn out to be completely d…
We study by quantum Monte Carlo simulations the ground state of a harmonically confined dipolar Bose gas with aligned dipole moments, and with the inclusion of a repulsive two-body potential of varying range. Two different limits can be clearly identified, namely a classical one in which the attractive part of the dipolar interaction dominates and the system forms an ordered array of parallel filaments, and a quantum-mechanical one, wherein filaments are destabilized by zero-point motion, and eventually the ground state becomes a uniform cloud. The physical character of the system smoothly evo…
We analyze the time evolution of the Bose-Hubbard model after a sudden quantum quench to a weakly interacting regime. Specifically, motivated by a recent experiment at Kyoto University, we numerically simulate redistribution of the kinetic and onsite-interaction energies at an early time, which was observed in non-equilibrium dynamics of ultracold Bose gases in a cubic optical lattice starting with a singly-occupied Mott-insulator state. In order to compute the short-time dynamics corresponding to the experimental situation, we apply the truncated-Wigner approximation (TWA) to the Bose-Hubbard…
We report on the dynamics of thermalization by extending a generalization of the Caldeira-Leggett model, developed in the context of cold atomic gases confined in a harmonic trap, to higher dimensions. Universal characteristics en route to thermalization which appear to be independent of dimensionality are highlighted, which additionally suggest a scaling analogous to turbulent mixing in fluid dynamics. We then focus on features dependent on dimensionality, with particular regard to the role of angular momentum of the two atomic clouds, having in mind the goal of efficient thermalization betwe…
Motivated by recent experiments on rotating Bose-Einstein condensates, we investigate a rotating, polarized Fermi gas trapped in an anharmonic potential. We apply a semiclassical expansion of the density of states in order to determine how the thermodynamic properties depend on the rotation frequency. The accuracy of the semiclassical approximation is tested and shown to be sufficient for describing typical experiments. At zero temperature, rotating the gas above a given frequency $Ω_{\rm DO}$ leads to a `donut'-shaped cloud which is analogous to the hole found in two-dimensional Bose-Einstein…
We discuss the scaling of the interaction energy with particle numbers for a harmonically trapped two-species mixture at thermal equilibrium experiencing interactions of arbitrary strength and range. In the limit of long-range interactions and weak coupling, we recover known results for the integrable Caldeira-Leggett model in the classical limit. In the case of short-range interactions and for a balanced mixture, numerical simulations show scaling laws with exponents that depend on the interaction strength, its attractive or repulsive nature, and the dimensionality of the system. Simple analy…
Motivated by current interest in the dynamics of trapped quantum gases, we study the microcanonical dynamics of a trapped one-dimensional gas of classical particles interacting via a finite-range repulsive force of tunable strength. We examine two questions which have been of interest in quantum dynamics: (1) the breathing mode (size oscillation) dynamics of the trapped gas and the dependence of the breathing frequency on the interaction strength, and (2) the long-time relaxation and possible thermalization of the finite isolated gas. We show that the breathing mode frequency has non-monotonic…
The dependence of the three lowest order spatial correlation functions of a harmonically confined Bose gas on temperature and interaction strength is presented at equilibrium. Our analysis is based on a stochastic Langevin equation for the order parameter of a weakly-interacting gas. Comparison of the predicted first order correlation functions to those of appropriate mean field theories demonstrates the potentially crucial role of density fluctuations on the equilibrium coherence length. Furthermore, the change in both coherence length and shape of the correlation function, from gaussian to ex…
In this paper, we develop a numerical procedure for investigating the dynamics of trapped Bose gases based on the ZGN theory. The dynamical equations used consist of a generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation for the condensate order parameter and a semiclassical kinetic equation for the thermal cloud. The former is solved using a fast Fourier transform split-operator technique while the Boltzmann equation is treated by means of N-body simulations. The two components are coupled by mean fields as well as collisional processes that transfer atoms between the two. This scheme has been applied to a …
We have analytically obtained 1-particle density matrices for ideal Bose and Fermi gases in both the 3-D box geometries and the harmonically trapped geometries for the entire range of temperature. We have obtained quantum cluster expansions of the grand free energies in closed forms for the same systems in the restricted geometries. We have proposed a theorem (with a proof) about the generic form of the quantum cluster integral. We also have considered short ranged interactions in our analyses for the quasi 1-D cases of Bose and Fermi gases in the box geometries. Our theoretical results are ex…
We study the properties of a spin-polarized Fermi gas in a harmonic trap, using the semiclassical (Thomas-Fermi) approximation. Universal forms for the spatial and momentum distributions are calculated, and the results compared with the corresponding properties of a dilute Bose gas.
We study Landau damping in dilute Bose-Einstein condensed gases in both spherical and prolate ellipsoidal harmonic traps. We solve the Bogoliubov equations for the mode spectrum in both of these cases, and calculate the damping by summing over transitions between excited quasiparticle states. The results for the spherical case are compared to those obtained in the Hartree-Fock approximation, where the excitations take on a single-particle character, and excellent agreement between the two approaches is found. We have also taken the semiclassical limit of the Hartree-Fock approximation and obta…
We review and extend the theory of the dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensation in weakly interacting atomic gases. We present in a unified way both the semiclassical theory as well as the full quantum theory. This is achieved by deriving a Fokker-Planck equation that incorporates both the coherent and incoherent effects of the interactions in a dilute Bose gas. In first instance we focus our attention on the nonequilibrium dynamics of a homogeneous Bose gas with a positive interatomic scattering length. After that we discuss how our results can be generalized to the inhomogeneous situation that…
We experimentally study the relaxation dynamics of a coherently split one-dimensional Bose gas using matterwave interference. Measuring the full probability distributions of interference contrast reveals the prethermalization of the system to a non-thermal steady state. To describe the evolution of noise and correlations we develop a semiclassical effective description that allows us to model the dynamics as a stochastic Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process.
We consider a model of a dilute Bose-Einstein condensed gas at finite temperatures, where the condensate coexists in a trap with a cloud of thermal excitations. Within the ZGN formalism, the dynamics of the condensate is described by a generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation, while the thermal cloud is represented by a semiclassical kinetic equation. Our numerical approach simulates the kinetic equation using a cloud of representative test particles, while collisions are treated by means of a Monte Carlo sampling technique. A full 3D split-operator Fast Fourier Transform method is used to evolve…
Specific heat per particle ($c_v$) of an ideal gas, in many occasions, is interpreted as energy fluctuation per particle ($\triangleε^2$) of the ideal gas through the relation: $\triangleε^2=kT^2c_v$, where $k$ is the Boltzmann constant and $T$ is the temperature. This relationship is true only in the classical limit, and deviates significantly in the quantum degenerate regime. We have analytically explored quantum to classical crossover of this relationship, in particular, for 3-D free Bose and Fermi gases. We also have explored the same for harmonically trapped cases. We have obtained a hump…
We study the fate of algebraic decay of correlations in a harmonically trapped two-dimensional degenerate Bose gas. The analysis is inspired by recent experiments on ultracold atoms where power-law correlations have been observed despite the presence of the external potential. We generalize the spin wave description of phase fluctuations to the trapped case and obtain an analytical expression for the one-body density matrix within this approximation. We show that algebraic decay of the central correlation function persists to lengths of about 20% of the Thomas--Fermi radius. We establish that …
Using a high temperature virial expansion, we present a controllable study of the thermodynamics of strongly correlated Fermi gases near the BEC-BCS crossover region. We propose a practical way to determine the expansion coefficients for both harmonically trapped and homogeneous cases, and calculate the third order coefficient $b_{3}(T)$ at finite temperatures $T$. At resonance, a $T$-independent coefficient $b_{3,\infty}^{\hom}\approx-0.29095295$ is determined in free space. These results are compared with a recent thermodynamic measurement of $^{6}$Li atoms, at temperatures below the degener…
We consider a non-interacting Fermi gas in $d$ dimensions, both in the non-relativistic and relativistic case. The system of size $L^{d}$ is initially prepared into two halves $\mathcal{L}$ and $\mathcal{R}$, each of them thermalized at two different temperatures, $T_{\mathcal{L}}$ and $T_{\mathcal{R}}$ respectively. At time $t=0$ the two halves are put in contact and the entire system is left to evolve unitarily. We show that, in the thermodynamic limit, the time evolution of the particle and energy densities is perfectly described by a semiclassical approach which permits to analytically eva…
We develop a general approach for calculating the characteristic function of the work distribution of quantum many-body systems in a time-varying potential, whose many-body wave function can be cast in the Slater determinant form. Our results are applicable to a wide range of systems including an ideal gas of spinless fermions in one dimension (1D), the Tonks-Girardeau (TG) gas of hard-core bosons, as well as a 1D gas of hard-core anyons. In order to illustrate the utility of our approach, we focus on the TG gas confined to an arbitrary time-dependent trapping potential. In particular, we use …
