Using a high temperature virial expansion, we present a controllable study of the thermodynamics of strongly correlated Fermi gases near the BEC-BCS crossover region. We propose a practical way to determine the expansion coefficients for both harmonically trapped and homogeneous cases, and calculate the third order coefficient $b_{3}(T)$ at finite temperatures $T$. At resonance, a $T$-independent coefficient $b_{3,\infty}^{\hom}\approx-0.29095295$ is determined in free space. These results are compared with a recent thermodynamic measurement of $^{6}$Li atoms, at temperatures below the degeneracy temperature, and with Monte Carlo simulations.
Quantum virial expansion provides an ideal tool to investigate the high-temperature properties of a strongly correlated Fermi gas. Here, we construct the virial expansion in the presence of spin population imbalance. Up to the third order, we calculate the high-temperature free energy of a unitary Fermi gas as a function of spin imbalance, with infinitely large, attractive or repulsive interactions. In the latter repulsive case, we show that there is no itinerant ferromagnetism when quantum virial expansion is applicable. We therefore estimate an upper bound for the ferromagnetic transition te…
By developing a quantum virial expansion theory, we quantitatively calculate the dynamic density response function of a trapped strongly interacting Fermi gas at high temperatures near unitarity. A clear transition from atomic to molecular responses is identified in the spectra when crossing from the BCS to BEC regimes, in qualitative agreement with recent Bragg spectroscopy observations. Our virial expansion method provides a promising way to solve the challenging strong-coupling problems and is applicable to other dynamical properties of strongly correlated Fermi gases.
Strongly correlated Fermi system plays a fundamental role in very different areas of physics, from neutron stars, quark-gluon plasmas, to high temperature superconductors. Despite the broad applicability, it is notoriously difficult to be understood theoretically because of the absence of a small interaction parameter. Recent achievements of ultracold trapped Fermi atoms near a Feshbach resonance have ushered in enormous changes. The unprecedented control of interaction, geometry and purity in these novel systems has led to many exciting experimental results, which are to be urgently understoo…
Following up on recent calculations, we investigate the leading- and next-to-leading order semiclassical approximation to the virial coefficients of a two-species fermion system with a contact interaction. Using the analytic result for the second-order virial coefficient as a renormalization condition, we derive expressions for up to the seventh-order virial coefficient $Δb_7$. Our results at leading order, though approximate, furnish simple analytic formulas that relate $Δb_n$ to $Δb_2$ for arbitrary dimension, providing a glimpse into the behavior of the virial expansion across dimensions an…
We map out the interaction effects on the first six virial coefficients of one-dimensional Fermi gases with zero-range attractive and repulsive interactions, and the first four virial coefficients of the two-dimensional analog with attractive interactions. To that end, we use two non-perturbative stochastic methods: projection by complex stochastic quantization, which allows us to determine high-order coefficients at weak coupling and estimate the radius of convergence of the virial expansion; and a path-integral representation of the virial coefficients. To complement our numerical calculatio…
Using a leading-order semiclassical approximation, we calculate the third- and fourth-order virial coefficients of nonrelativistic spin-1/2 fermions in a harmonic trapping potential in arbitrary spatial dimensions, and as functions of temperature, trapping frequency and coupling strength. Our simple, analytic results for the interaction-induced changes $Δb_3$ and $Δb_4$ agree qualitatively, and in some regimes quantitatively, with previous numerical calculations for the unitary limit of three-dimensional Fermi gases.
We study the virial relations for ultracold trapped two component Fermi gases in the case of short finite range interactions. Numerical verifications for such relations are reported through the BCS-BEC crossover. As an intermediate step, it is necessary to evaluate the partial derivatives of the many body energy with respect to the inverse of the scattering length and with respect to the interaction range. They are found to have extreme values at the unitary limit. The virial results are used to check the quality of the variational wave function involved in the calculations.
We use the virial expansion to investigate the behavior of the two-component, attractive Fermi gas in the high-temperature limit, where the system smoothly evolves from weakly attractive fermions to weakly repulsive bosonic dimers as the short-range attraction is increased. We present a new formalism for computing the virial coefficients that employs a diagrammatic approach to the grand potential and allows one to easily include an effective range $R^*$ in the interaction. In the limit where the thermal wavelength $λ\ll R^*$, the calculation of the virial coefficients is perturbative even at u…
The dynamic response functions of strongly interacting fermion gas in homogeneous space are investigated in a virial expansion to second order. The density response function exhibits transition from atomic to molecular response, as the interaction strength increases and the system undergoes BCS-BEC crossover. The qualitative features of density and spin response agree with measurements from the Bragg spectroscopy experiments. The virial response is exact at low density and high temperature, therefore providing a benchmark for many-body response.
Third and higher order quantum virial coefficients require the solution of the corresponding quantum many-body problem. Nevertheless, in an earlier paper (Phys. Rev. Lett. 108, 260402 (2012)) we proposed that the higher-order cluster integrals of a dilute unitary fermionic gas may be approximated in terms of the two-body cluster, together with an appropriate suppression factor. Although not exact, this ansatz gave a fair agreement up to fugacity z=6 with the experimentally obtained equation of state. The objective of the present note is to give some physical arguments in favor of this ansatz.
We study the roles of the dynamical high order perturbation and statistically non-linear infrared fluctuation/correlation in the virial equation of state for the Fermi gas in the unitary limit. Incorporating the quantum level crossing rearrangement effects, the spontaneously generated entropy departing from the mean-field theory formalism leads to concise thermodynamical expressions. The dimensionless virial coefficients with complex non-local correlations are calculated up to the fourth order for the first time. The virial coefficients of unitary Fermi gas are found to be proportional to thos…
From the unified statistical thermodynamics of quantum gases, the virial coefficients of ideal Bose and Fermi gases which are trapped under generic power law potential are derived systematically. From the general result of virial coefficients, one can produce the known results in $d=3$ and $d=2$. But more importantly we found that, the virial coefficients of bosons and fermions become equal (except the the second virial coefficient, where the sign is different) when we trap the gases under harmonic potential in $d=1$. This result suggests the equivalence between Bose and Fermi gases which is a…
We present essentially exact solutions of the Schroedinger equation for three fermions in two different spin states with zero-range s-wave interactions under harmonic confinement. Our approach covers spherically symmetric, strictly two-dimensional, strictly one-dimensional, cigar-shaped, and pancake-shaped traps. In particular, we discuss the transition from quasi-one-dimensional to strictly one-dimensional and from quasi-two-dimensional to strictly two-dimensional geometries. We determine and interpret the eigenenergies of the system as a function of the trap geometry and the strength of the …
The unitary equal-mass Fermi gas with zero-range interactions constitutes a paradigmatic model system that is relevant to atomic, condensed matter, nuclear, particle, and astro physics. This work determines the fourth-order virial coefficient $b_4$ of such a strongly-interacting Fermi gas using a customized \textit{ab initio} path integral Monte Carlo (PIMC) algorithm. In contrast to earlier theoretical results, which disagreed on the sign and magnitude of $b_4$, our $b_4$ agrees within error bars with the experimentally determined value, thereby resolving an ongoing literature debate. Utilizi…
By generalizing our automated algebra approach from homogeneous space to harmonically trapped systems, we have calculated the fourth- and fifth-order virial coefficients of universal spin-1/2 fermions in the unitary limit, confined in an isotropic harmonic potential. We present results for said coefficients as a function of trapping frequency (or, equivalently, temperature), which compare favorably with previous Monte Carlo calculations (available only at fourth order) as well as with our previous estimates in the untrapped limit (high temperature, low frequency). We use our estimates of the v…
We theoretically investigate the high-temperature thermodynamics of a harmonically trapped Fermi gas across a narrow Feshbach resonance, by using the second-order quantum virial expansion, and point out some new features compared to the broad resonance. The interatomic interaction is modeled by the pseudopotential with an additional parameter, i.e., the effective range, to characterize the narrow resonance width. Deeply inside the width of a narrow Feshbach resonance, we find the second virial coefficient evolves with the effective range from the well-known universal value 1/4 in the broad-res…
We study the virial expansion for three-dimensional Bose and Fermi gases at finite temperature using an approximation that only considers two-body processes and is valid for high temperatures and low densities. The first virial coefficients are computed and the second is exact. The results are obtained for the full range of values of the scattering length and the unitary limit is recovered as a particular case. A weak coupling expansion is performed and the free case is also obtained as a proper limit. The influence of an anisotropic harmonic trap is considered using the Local Density Approxim…
Equal-mass two-component Fermi gases under spherically symmetric external harmonic confinement with large s-wave scattering length are considered. Using the stochastic variational approach, we determine the lowest 286 and 164 relative eigenenergies of the (2,2) and (3,1) systems at unitarity as a function of the range $r_0$ of the underlying two-body potential and extrapolate to the $r_0 \rightarrow 0$ limit. Our calculations include all states with vanishing and finite angular momentum $L$ (and natural and unnatural parity $Π$) with relative energy up to $10.5 \hbar Ω$, where $Ω$ denotes the …
We consider two-component fermions with a zero-range interaction both in two and three dimensions and study their spectral functions of bulk and shear viscosities for an arbitrary scattering length. Here the Kubo formulas are systematically evaluated up to the second order in the quantum virial expansion applicable to the high-temperature regime. In particular, our computation of the bulk viscosity spectral function is facilitated by expressing it with the contact-contact response function, which can be measured experimentally under the periodic modulation of the scattering length. The obtaine…
We calculate the fourth cluster coefficients of the homogeneous unitary spin 1/2 Fermi gas as functions of the internal-state mass ratio, over intervals constrained by the 3- or 4-body Efimov effect. For this we use our 2016 conjecture (validated for equal masses by Hou and Drut in 2020) in a numerically efficient formulation making the sum over angular momentum converge faster, which is crucial at large mass ratio. The mean cluster coefficient, relevant for equal chemical potentials, is not of constant sign and increases rapidly close to the Efimovian thresholds. We also get the fourth virial…
Using a coarse temporal lattice approximation, we calculate the first few terms of the virial expansion of a three-species fermion system with a three-body contact interaction in $d$ spatial dimensions, both in homogeneous space as well as in a harmonic trapping potential of frequency $ω$. Using the three-body problem to renormalize, we report analytic results for the change in the fourth- and fifth-order virial coefficients $Δb_4$ and $Δb_5$ as functions of $Δb_3$. Additionally, we argue that in the $ω\to 0$ limit the relationship $b_n^\text{T} = n^{-d/2} b_n$ holds between the trapped (T) an…
In this paper we explore the transport properties of three-component Fermi gases confined to one spatial dimension, interacting via a three-body interaction, in the high temperature limit. At the classical level, the three-body interaction is scale invariant in one dimension. However, upon quantization, an anomaly appears which breaks the scale invariance. This is very similar to the physics of two-component fermions in two spatial dimensions, where the two-body interaction is also anomalous. Previous studies have already hinted that the physics of these two systems are intimately related. Her…
We theoretically investigate the high-temperature thermodynamics of a strongly interacting trapped Fermi gas near either s-wave or p-wave Feshbach resonances, using a second order quantum virial expansion. The second virial coefficient is calculated based on the energy spectrum of two interacting fermions in a harmonic trap. We consider both isotropic and anisotropic harmonic potentials. For the two-fermion interaction, either s-wave or p-wave, we use a pseudopotential parametrized by a scattering length and an effective range. This turns out to be the simplest way of encoding the energy depen…
We calculate the finite-temperature density and polarization equations of state of one-dimensional fermions with a zero-range interaction, considering both attractive and repulsive regimes. In the path-integral formulation of the grand-canonical ensemble, a finite chemical potential asymmetry makes these systems intractable for standard Monte Carlo approaches due to the sign problem. Although the latter can be removed in one spatial dimension, we consider the one-dimensional situation in the present work to provide an efficient test for studies of the higher-dimensional counterparts. To overco…
We present a field theoretic method for the calculation of the second and third virial coefficients b2 and b3 of 2-species fermions interacting via a contact interaction. The method is mostly analytic. We find a closed expression for b3 in terms of the 2 and 3-body T-matrices. We recover numerically, at unitarity, and also in the whole BEC-BCS crossover, previous numerical results for the third virial coefficient b3.
The virial expansion characterizes the high-temperature approach to the quantum-classical crossover in any quantum many-body system. Here, we calculate the virial coefficients up to the fifth-order of Fermi gases in 1D, 2D, and 3D, with attractive contact interactions, as relevant for a variety of applications in atomic and nuclear physics. To that end, we discretize the imaginary-time direction and calculate the relevant canonical partition functions. In coarse discretizations, we obtain analytic results featuring relationships between the interaction-induced changes $Δb_3$, $Δb_4$, and $Δb_5…
The virial expansion method is applied within a harmonic approximation to an interacting N-body system of identical fermions. We compute the canonical partition functions for two and three particles to get the two lowest orders in the expansion. The energy spectrum is carefully interpolated to reproduce ground state properties at low temperature and the non-interacting large temperature limit of constant virial coefficients. This resembles the smearing of shell effects in finite systems with increasing temperature. Numerical results are discussed for the second and third virial coefficients as…
The study of strongly correlated quantum gases in two dimensions has important ramifications for understanding many intriguing pheomena in solid materials, such as high-$T_{c}$ superconductivity and the fractional quantum Hall effect. However, theoretical methods are plagued by the existence of significant quantum fluctuations. Here, we present two- and three-body exact solutions for both fermions and bosons trapped in a two-dimensional harmonic potential, with an arbitrary $s$-wave scattering length. These few-particle solutions link in a natural way to the high-temperature properties of many…
The virial expansion for cold two-component Fermi and Bose atomic gases is considered in the presence of a waveguide and in the vicinity of a Feshbach resonance. The interaction between atoms and the coupling with the Feshbach molecules is modeled using a quantitative separable two-channel model. The scattering phase-shift in an atomic waveguide is defined. This permits us to extend the Beth-Uhlenbeck formula for the second-order virial coefficient to this inhomogeneous case.
We apply the statistical measure of complexity, introduced by López-Ruiz, Mancini and Calbet (LMC), to uniform Fermi systems. We investigate the connection between information and complexity measures with the strongly correlated behavior of various Fermi systems as nuclear matter, electron gas and liquid helium. We examine the possibility that LMC complexity can serve as an index quantifying correlations in the specific system and to which extent could be related with experimental quantities. Moreover, we concentrate on thermal effects on the complexity of ideal Fermi systems. We find that com…
We characterize the high-temperature thermodynamics of rotating bosons and fermions in two- (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) isotropic harmonic trapping potentials. We begin by calculating analytically the conventional virial coefficients $b_n$ for all $n$ in the noninteracting case, as functions of the trapping and rotational frequencies. We also report on the virial coefficients for the angular momentum and associated moment of inertia. Using the bn coefficients, we analyze the deconfined limit (in which the angular frequency matches the trapping frequency) and derive explicitly the limiting …
We consider dilute gases of dipolar bosons or fermions in the high-temperature limit in a spherically symmetric harmonic trapping potential. We examine the system using a virial expansion up to second order in the fugacity. Using the Born approximation and assuming purely dipolar interactions, we find that the second-order virial coefficient for both bosons and fermions depends quadratically on the dipole length and is negative at high temperature, indicating that to lowest order in the dipole-dipole interactions the dipolar single-component quantum gases are repulsive. If the $s$-wave scatter…
Three fermions with strongly repulsive interactions in a spherical harmonic trap, constitute the simplest nontrivial system that can exhibit the onset of itinerant ferromagnetism. Here, we present exact solutions for three trapped, attractively interacting fermions near a Feshbach resonance. We analyze energy levels on the upper branch of the resonance where the atomic interaction is effectively repulsive. When the s-wave scattering length a is sufficiently positive, three fully polarized fermions are energetically stable against a single spin-flip, indicating the possibility of itinerant ferr…
We demonstrate that summing up series of Feynman diagrams can yield unbiased accurate results for strongly-correlated fermions even when the convergence radius vanishes. We consider the unitary Fermi gas, a model of non-relativistic fermions in three-dimensional continuous space. Diagrams are built from partially-dressed or fully-dressed propagators of single particles and pairs. The series is resummed by a conformal-Borel transformation that incorporates the large-order behavior and the analytic structure in the Borel plane, which are found by the instanton approach. We report highly accurate…
The contact is an important concept that characterizes the universal properties of a strongly interacting quantum gas. It appears in both thermodynamic (energy, pressure, etc.) and dynamic quantities (radio-frequency and Bragg spectroscopies, etc.) of the system. Very recently, the concept of contact has been extended to higher partial waves, in particular, the p-wave contacts have been experimentally probed in recent experiment. So far discussions on p-wave contacts have been limited to three-dimensions. In this paper, we generalize the p-wave contacts to two-dimensions and derive a series of…
We study both Bose and Fermi gases at finite temperature and density in an approximation that sums an infinite number of many body processes that are reducible to 2-body scatterings. This is done for arbitrary negative scattering length, which interpolates between the ideal and unitary gas limits. In the unitary limit, we compute the first four virial coefficients within our approximation. The second virial coefficient is exact, and we extend the previously known result for fermions to bosons, and also for both bosons and fermions for the upper branch on the other side of unitarity (infinitely…
Understanding how strongly correlated two-dimensional (2D) systems can give rise to unconventional superconductivity with high critical temperatures is one of the major unsolved problems in condensed matter physics. Ultracold 2D Fermi gases have emerged as clean and controllable model systems to study the interplay of strong correlations and reduced dimensionality, but direct evidence of superfluidity in these systems has been missing. Here, we demonstrate superfluidity in an ultracold 2D Fermi gas by moving a periodic potential through the system and observing no dissipation below a critical …
We theoretically investigate attractive Fermi polarons in three dimensions at finite temperature and impurity concentration through the many-body T-matrix theory and high-temperature virial expansion. By using the analytically continued impurity Green's function, we calculate the direct rf spectroscopy of attractive polarons in the unitary regime. Taking the peak value of the rf spectroscopy as the polaron energy and the full width half maximum as the polaron lifetime, we determine the temperature range of validity for the quasi-particle description of Fermi polarons in the unitary limit.
We report the realization of correlated, density-dependent tunneling for fermionic 40K atoms trapped in an optical lattice. By appropriately tuning the frequency difference between a pair of Raman beams applied to a spin-polarized gas, simultaneous spin transitions and tunneling events are induced that depend on the relative occupations of neighboring lattice sites. Correlated spin-flip tunneling is spectroscopically resolved using gases prepared in opposite spin states, and the inferred Hubbard interaction energy is compared with a tight-binding prediction. We show that the laser-induced corr…
We consider mass-imbalanced two-component Fermi gases for which the unequal-mass atoms interact via a zero-range model potential with a diverging s-wave scattering length $a_s$, i.e., with $1/a_s=0$. The high temperature thermodynamics of the harmonically trapped and homogeneous systems are examined using a virial expansion approach up to third order in the fugacity. We find that the universal part of the third-order virial coefficient associated with two light atoms and one heavy atom is negative, while that associated with two heavy and one light atom changes sign from negative to positive a…
Quantum transport of strongly correlated fermions is of central interest in condensed matter physics. Here, we present first-principle nonequilibrium Green functions results using $T$-matrix selfenergies for finite Hubbard clusters of dimension $1,2,3$. We compute the expansion dynamics following a potential quench and predict its dependence on the interaction strength and particle number. We discover a universal scaling, allowing an extrapolation to infinite-size systems, which shows excellent agreement with recent cold atom diffusion experiments [Schneider et al., Nat. Phys. 8, 213 (2012)].
Recent breakthroughs in the creation of ultra-cold atomic gases in the laboratory have ushered in major changes in physical science. Many novel experiments are now possible, with an unprecedented control of interaction, geometry and purity. Quantum many-body theory is facing severe challenges in quantitatively understanding new experimental results. Here, we review some recently developed theoretical techniques that provide successful predictions for density response of a strongly correlated atomic Fermi gas. These include the strong-coupling random-phase approximation theory, high-temperature…
Strongly correlated fermions in a crystal or in an optical lattice in the presence of binary alloy disorder are investigated. We employ the statistical dynamical mean-field theory, which incorporates both, local fluctuations due to disorder and local correlations due to interaction, to solve the Anderson-Hubbard model. Localization due to disorder is studied by means of the probability distribution function of the local density of states. We obtain a complete paramagnetic ground state phase diagram consisting of disordered correlated metal, Anderson-Mott insulator, and band insulator.
These lectures are an introduction to the physics of strongly correlated fermions and bosons. They are specially targeted for the experimental realizations that have been provided by cold atomic gases in optical lattices.
We elucidate universal many-body properties of a one-dimensional, two-component ultracold Fermi gas near the $p$-wave Feshbach resonance. The low-energy scattering in this system can be characterized by two parameters, that is, $p$-wave scattering length and effective range. At the unitarity limit where the $p$-wave scattering length diverges and the effective range is reduced to zero without conflicting with the causality bound, the system obeys universal thermodynamics as observed in a unitary Fermi gas with contact $s$-wave interaction in three dimensions. It is in contrast to a Fermi gas w…
Whether a spin-1/2 Fermi gas will become ferromagnetic as the strength of repulsive interaction increases is a long-standing controversial issue. Recently this problem is studied experimentally by Jo et al, Science, 325, 1521 (2009) in which the authors claim a ferromagnetic transition is observed. This work is to point out the results of this experiment can not distinguish whether the system is in a ferromagnetic state or in a non-magnetic but strongly short-range correlated state. A conclusive experimental demonstration of ferromagnetism relies on the observation of ferromagnetic domains.
In the current era of precision quantum many-body physics, one of the most scrutinized systems is the unitary limit of the nonrelativistic spin-$1/2$ Fermi gas, due to its simplicity and relevance for atomic, condensed matter, and nuclear physics. The thermodynamics of this strongly correlated system is determined by universal functions which, at high temperature, are governed by universal virial coefficients $b_n$ that capture the effects of the $n$-body system on the many-body dynamics. Currently, $b_2$ and $b_3$ are well understood, but the situation is less clear for $b_4$, and no predicti…
We show how Fermi liquid theory can be applied to ultra-cold Fermi gases, thereby expanding their "simulation" capabilities to a class of problems of interest to multiple physics sub-disciplines. We introduce procedures for measuring and calculating position dependent Landau parameters. This lays the ground work for addressing important controversial issues: (i) the suggestion that thermodynamically, the normal state of a unitary gas is indistinguishable from a Fermi liquid (ii) that a fermionic system with strong repulsive contact interactions is associated with either ferromagnetism or local…
Using universal properties and a basic statistical mechanical approach, we propose a general equation of state for unitary Fermi gases. The universal equation of state is written as a series solution to a self consistent integral equation where the general solution is a linear combination of Fermi functions. First, by truncating our series solution to four terms with already known exact theoretical inputs at limiting cases, namely the first \emph{three} virial coefficients and using the Bertsch parameter as a free parameter, we find a good agreement with experimental measurements in the entire…
We theoretically study the superfluid phase of a strongly correlated $^{173}$Yb Fermi gas near its orbital Feshbach resonance, by developing a quantitative pair-fluctuation theory within a two-band model. We examine the density excitation spectrum of the system and determine a stability phase diagram. We find that the $^{173}$Yb Fermi gas is intrinsically metastable and has a peculiar equation of state, due to the small but positive singlet scattering length. The massive Leggett mode, arising from the fluctuation of the relative phase of two order parameters, is severely damped. We discuss the…
We study a two species fermion mixture with different populations on a square lattice modeled by a Hubbard Hamiltonian with on-site inter-species repulsive interaction. Such a model can be realized in a cold atom system with fermionic atoms in two different hyperfine states loaded on an optical lattice and with tunable inter-species interaction strength via external fields. For a two-dimensional square lattice, when at least one of the fermion species is close to half-filling, the system is highly affected by lattice effects. With the majority species near half-filling and varying densities fo…
We extent the recently developed Multi-Layer Multi-Configuration Time-Dependent Hartree method for Bosons (ML-MCTDHB) for simulating the correlated quantum dynamics of bosonic mixtures to the fermionic sector and establish a unifying approach for the investigation of the correlated quantum dynamics of mixture of indistinguishable particles, be it fermions or bosons. Relying on a multi-layer wave-function expansion, the resulting Multi-Layer Multi-Configuration Time-Dependent Hartree method for Mixtures (ML-MCTDHX) can be adapted to efficiently resolve system-specific intra- and inter-species c…
Motivated by the rapidly growing possibilities for experiments with ultracold atoms in optical lattices we investigate the thermodynamic properties of correlated lattice fermions in the presence of an external spin-dependent random potential. The corresponding model, a Hubbard model with spin-dependent local random potentials, is solved within dynamical mean-field theory. This allows us to present a comprehensive picture of the thermodynamic properties of this system. In particular, we show that for a fixed total number of fermions spin-dependent disorder induces a magnetic polarization. The m…
