We show that an Ideal Bose gas that is contained within a very thin ring exhibits phenomena analogous to the Bloch and Josephson oscillations of a charged Ideal Fermi gas in a thin ring. If the walls of the ring are constrained to have an angular velocity $ω$, the angular momentum has an anomalous component that is periodic in $ω$, with a period equal to the quantum of angular velocity $ω_{0}\equiv \hbar /mR^{2}$. If a constant applied torque is applied to the walls, there will be component of the angular momentum of the gas that is periodic in time, with a 'Josephson frequency' given by $f_{J} =τ/N \hbar$. Finally, we show that the oscillations are an automatic feature of the quantum regime of any ring of an ensemble of identical particles, even with particle interactions.
We show that the electrical impedance of a small-capacitance Josephson junction includes besides the capacitive term $-i/ωC_B$ also an inductive term $iωL_B$. Similar to the known Bloch capacitance $C_B(q)$, the Bloch inductance $L_B(q)$ also depends periodically on the quasicharge $q$, and its maximum value achieved at $q=e (\textrm{mod} 2e)$ always exceeds the value of the Josephson inductance of this junction $L_J(ϕ)$ at fixed $ϕ=0$. The effect of the Bloch inductance on the dynamics of a single junction and a one-dimensional array is described.
Bloch oscillations were predicted and observed long ago in Josephson junctions, which are thin insulating or conducting layers bridging two superconductors. Here we forward a scheme for utilizing these oscillations to amplify nano-metric mechanical vibrations. Highly coherent non-classical mechanical states can be produced and controlled by simply applying a DC bias current and an in-plane magnetic field. The vibrations induce peaks in the I-V characteristic of the junction and can be detected by simple DC voltage measurements.
We have measured the current-voltage characteristics of a Josephson junction with tunable Josephson energy $E_J$ embedded in an inductive environment provided by a chain of SQUIDs. Such an environment induces localization of the charge on the junction, which results in an enhancement of the zero-bias resistance of the circuit. We understand this result quantitatively in terms of the Bloch band dynamics of the localized charge. This dynamics is governed by diffusion in the lowest Bloch band of the Josephson junction as well as by Landau-Zener transitions out of the lowest band into the higher b…
A phenomenological theory is developed, that accounts for the collective dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate of magnons. In terms of such description we discuss the nature of spontaneous macroscopic interference between magnon clouds, highlighting the close relation between such effects and the well known Josephson effects. Using those ideas we present a detailed calculation of the Josephson oscillations between two magnon clouds, spatially separated in a magnonic Josephson junction.
Bloch oscillations predicted to occur in current-biased single Josephson junctions have eluded direct observation up to now. Here, we demonstrate similar Bloch oscillations in a slightly richer Josephson circuit, the quantronium. The quantronium is a Bloch transistor with two small junctions in series, defining an island, in parallel with a larger junction. In the ground state, the microwave impedance of the device is modulated periodically with the charge on the gate capacitor coupled to the transistor island. When a current flows across this capacitor, the impedance modulation occurs at the …
Bloch oscillations in nanoscale Josephson junctions with a Coulomb charging energy comparable to the Josephson coupling energy are explored within the context of a model previously considered by Geigenmüller and Schön that includes Zener tunneling and treats quasiparticle tunneling as an explicit shot-noise process. The dynamics of the junction quasicharge are investigated numerically using both Monte Carlo and ensemble approaches to calculate voltage--current characteristics in the presence of microwaves. We examine in detail the origin of harmonic and subharmonic Bloch steps at dc biases $I=…
We discuss the properties of devices of small Josephson junctions in the light of the phase fluctuation theory and the energy band structure, which arises from the delocalization of the phase variable. The theory is applied in the realization of a mesoscopic amplifier, the Bloch oscillating transistor. The device characteristics and comparison with theory and simulations are discussed. The current gain of the device in a stable operating mode has been measured to be as high as 30. Measurements on input impedance and the power gain show that the BOT is an amplifier designed for middle-range imp…

Atomtronics experiments with ultracold atomic gases allow us to explore quantum transport phenomena of a weakly-interacting Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). Here, we focus on two-terminal transport of such a BEC in the vicinity of zero temperature. By using the tunnel Hamiltonian and Bogoliubov theory, we obtain a DC Josephson current expression in the BEC and apply it to experimentally relevant situations such as quantum point contact and planar junction. Due to the absence of Andreev bound states but the presence of couplings associated with condensation elements, a current-phase relation in …
We discuss the coherent oscillations between two coupled quantum states of a Bose-Einstein condensate in two-dimensional space at zero temperature. In the system we consider, weak interparticle repulsive interactions occur between the particles in state one only, while the state two particles remain non-interacting. Analytical as well as numerical solution of the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii and Schroedinger equations reveals various regimes of oscillational dynamics for the relative quantum phase and population imbalance between the two subsystems of the condensate. We show that, depending on the…
Starting from a quantum two-mode Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian we determine the ground state properties, momentum distribution and dynamical evolution for a Bose Josephson junction realized by an ultracold Bose gas in a double-well trap. Varying the well asymmetry we identify Mott-like regions of parameters where number fluctuations are suppressed and the interference fringes in the momentum distribution are strongly reduced. We also show how Schroedinger cat states, realized from an initially phase coherent state by a sudden rise of the barrier among the two wells, will give rise to a destructive …
We study the quantum corrections to the Gross-Pitaevskii equation for two weakly linked Bose-Einstein condensates. The goals are: 1) to investigate dynamical regimes at the borderline between the classical and quantum behaviour of the bosonic field; 2) to search for new macroscopic quantum coherence phenomena not observable with other superfluid/superconducting systems. Quantum fluctuations renormalize the classical Josephson oscillation frequencies. Large amplitude phase oscillations are modulated, exhibiting collapses and revivals. We describe a new inter-well oscillation mode, with a vanish…
Using the Aharonov-Casher (A-C) phase, we present a microscopic theory of the Josephson and persistent spin currents in quasi-equilibrium Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) of magnons in ferromagnetic insulators. Starting from a microscopic spin model that we map onto a Gross-Pitaevskii Hamiltonian, we derive a two-state model for the Josephson junction between the weakly coupled magnon-BECs. We then show how to obtain the alternating-current (ac) Josephson effect with magnons as well as macroscopic quantum self-trapping in a magnon-BEC. We next propose how to control the direct-current (dc) Jos…
The Bloch-oscillating transistor (BOT) is an amplifier that utilizes semiclassical dynamics of states in energy bands under traveling quasimomentum. In a BOT, a single quasiparticle tunneling across a base tunnel junction switches the state of a superconducting tunnel junction to a lower Bloch band, triggering a series of resonant Cooper-pair tunnelings through an emitter Josephson junction (Bloch oscillations). Here, we investigate experimentally and theoretically an alternative realization of this device, based only on superconducting tunnel junctions. We discover new amplification schemes, …
We propose a method of diagnostic of a degenerate ground state of Bose condensate in a double well potential. The method is based on the study of the one-particle coherent tunneling under switching the time-dependent weak Josephson coupling between the wells. We obtain a simple expression that allows to determine the phase of the condensate and the total number of the particles in the condensate from the relative number of the particles in two wells $Δn =n_1-n_2$ measured before the Josephson coupling is switched on and after it is switched off. The specifics of the application of the method i…
We demonstrate that two coupled Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) at zero temperature can be used to realize a qubit which is the counterpart of Josephson charge qubits. The two BEC are weakly coupled and confined in an asymmetric double-well trap. When the "charging energy" of the system is much larger than the Josephson energy and the system is biased near a degeneracy point, the two BEC represent a qubit with two states differing only by one atom. The realization of the BEC qubits in realistic BEC experiments is briefly discussed.
We consider a Bose-Einstein condensate of ultracold atoms loaded into a square optical lattice and subject to a static force. For vanishing atom-atom interactions the atoms perform periodic Bloch oscillations for arbitrary direction of the force. We study the stability of these oscillations for non-vanishing interactions, which is shown to depend on an alignment of the force vector with respect to the lattice crystallographic axes. If the force is aligned along any of the axes, the mean field approach can be used to identify the stability conditions. On the contrary, for a misaligned force one…
We have fabricated the Bloch transistor shunted on-chip by a small-sized Cr resistor with Rs about 1 kOhm. The Bloch transistor normally consists of two small Josephson junctions connected in series, which in our case have been replaced by two superconducting interferometer loops, each with two junctions in parallel. A capacitively coupled gate is supplied to control the induced charge of the small intermediate electrode (island) of the transistor. The measured I-V curves show no hysteresis and correspond to the operation of a effective Josephson junction at the high-damping and strong-noise l…
We report on the novel mechanism of electron scattering in hybrid Bose-Fermi systems consisting of a two-dimensional electron gas in the vicinity of an exciton condensate: We show that a pair-of-bogolons--mediated scattering proves to be dominating over the conventional acoustic phonon channel and over the single-bogolon scattering, even if the screening is taken into account. We develop a microscopic theory of this effect, focusing on GaAs and MoS$_2$ materials, and find the principal temperature dependence of resistivity, distinct from the conventional phonon--mediated processes. Further, we…
We theoretically investigate Bloch oscillations in a one-dimensional Bose-Hubbard chain, with single-particle losses from the odd lattice sites described by the Lindblad equation. For a single particle the time evolution of the state is completely determined by a non-Hermitian effective Hamiltonian. We analyse the spectral properties of this Hamiltonian for an infinite lattice and link features of the spectrum to observable dynamical effects, such as frequency doubling in breathing modes. We further consider the case of many particles in the mean-field limit leading to complex nonlinear Schröd…
The dc transport properties of long arrays of small Al Josephson junctions, biased through on-chip Cr resistors, are studied. The IV-characteristics show a large Coulomb threshold for current as well as negative-slope regions indicating the regime of autonomous Bloch oscillations up to rather high frequencies of f = I/2e ~1 GHz, comparable to those reported by other groups for single junctions. On the other hand, a small depth of the back-bending implies a low duty cycle and a broad spectrum of the oscillations, which we attribute to the insufficiently high impedance of the bias resistors. A s…
We study theoretically Bloch oscillations of half-matter, half-light quasi-particles: exciton-polaritons. We propose an original structure for the observation of this phenomenon despite the constraints imposed by the relatively short lifetime of the particles and the limitations on the engineered periodic potential. First, we focus on the linear regime in a perfect lattice where regular oscillations are obtained. Second, we take into account a realistic structural disorder known to localize non-interacting particles, which is quite dramatic for propagation-related phenomena. In the non-linear …
Using a Luttinger-liquid approach we study the quantum fluctuations of a Bose-Josephson junction, consisting of a Bose gas confined to a quasi one-dimensional ring trap which contains a localized repulsive potential barrier. For an infinite barrier we study the one-particle and two-particle static correlation functions. For the one-body density-matrix we obtain different power-law decays depending on the location of the probe points with respect to the position of the barrier. This quasi-long range order can be experimentally probed in principle using an interference measurement. The correspon…
