Fluctuations of the Condensate in Ideal and Interacting Bose Gases

We investigate the fluctuations of the condensate in the ideal and weakly interacting Bose gases confined in a box of volume V within canonical ensemble. Canonical ensemble is developed to describe the behavior of the fluctuations when different methods of approximation to the weakly interacting Bose gases are used. Research shows that the fluctuations of the condensate exhibit anomalous behavior for the interacting Bose gas confined in a box.

Two-species mixture of quantum degenerate Bose and Fermi gases

We have produced a macroscopic quantum system in which a Li-6 Fermi sea coexists with a large and stable Na-23 Bose-Einstein condensate. This was accomplished using inter-species sympathetic cooling of fermionic Li-6 in a thermal bath of bosonic Na-23.

Spinor condensates and light scattering from Bose-Einstein condensates

These notes discuss two aspects of the physics of atomic Bose-Einstein condensates: optical properties and spinor condensates. The first topic includes light scattering experiments which probe the excitations of a condensate in both the free-particle and phonon regime. At higher light intensity, a new form of superradiance and phase-coherent matter wave amplification were observed. We also discuss properties of spinor condensates and describe studies of ground--state spin domain structures and dynamical studies which revealed metastable excited states and quantum tunneling.

Observation of vortex phase singularities in Bose-Einstein condensates

We have observed phase singularities due to vortex excitation in Bose-Einstein condensates. Vortices were created by moving a laser beam through a condensate. They were observed as dislocations in the interference fringes formed by the stirred condensate and a second unperturbed condensate. The velocity dependence for vortex excitation and the time scale for re-establishing a uniform phase across the condensate were determined.

Scissors modes of two-component degenerate gases: Bose-Bose and Bose-Fermi mixtures

We investigate the scissors modes in binary mixtures of degenerate dilute quantum gases, for both Bose-Bose and Bose-Fermi mixtures. For the latter we consider both the superfluid and normal hydrodynamic and collisionless regimes. We analyze the dependence of the frequencies of the scissors modes and their character as a function of the Bose-Fermi coupling and the trap geometry. We show that the scissors mode can reveal a clear trace of the hydrodynamic behavior of the Fermi gas.

Transition from 3D to 1D in Bose Gases at Zero Temperature

We investigate the effects of dimensional reduction in Bose gases induced by a strong harmonic confinement in the transverse cylindric radial direction. By using a generalized Lieb-Liniger theory, based on a variational treatment of the transverse width of the Bose gas, we analyze the transition from a 3D Bose-Einstein condensate to the 1D Tonks-Girardeau gas. The sound velocity and the frequency of the lowest compressional mode give a clear signature of the regime involved. Three-Body Losses in Trapped Bose-Einstein Condensed Gases

A time-dependent Kohn-Sham (KS)-like equation for N bosons in a trap is generalized for the case of inelastic collisions. We derive adiabatic equations which are used to calculate the nonlinear dynamics of the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) and non-mean field corrections due to the three-body recombination. We find that the calculated corrections are about 13 times larger for 3D trapped dilute bose gases and about 7 times larger for 1D trapped weakly interacting bose gases when compared with the corresponding corrections for the ground state energy and for the collective frequencies.

Bose-Einstein Condensation of Trapped Atomic Gases

This article reviews recent investigations on the phenomenon of Bose-Einstein condensation of dilute gases. Since the experimental observation of quantum degeneracy in atomic gases, the research activity in the field of coherent matter-waves literally exploded. The present topical review aims to give an introduction into the thermodynamics of Bose-Einstein condensation, a general overview over experimental techniques and investigations, and a theoretical foundation for the description of bosonic many-body quantum systems.

Quasi-one-dimensional Bose gases with large scattering length

Bose gases confined in highly-elongated harmonic traps are investigated over a wide range of interaction strengths using quantum Monte Carlo techniques. We find that the properties of a Bose gas under tight transverse confinement are well reproduced by a 1d model Hamiltonian with contact interactions. We point out the existence of a unitary regime, where the properties of the quasi-1d Bose gas become independent of the actual value of the 3d scattering length. Rotons in gaseous Bose-Einstein condensates irradiated by a laser

A gaseous Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) irradiated by a far off-resonance laser has long-range interatomic correlations caused by laser-induced dipole-dipole interactions. These correlations, which are tunable via the laser intensity and frequency, can produce a `roton' minimum in the excitation spectrum--behavior reminiscent of the strongly correlated superfluid liquid helium II.

Characterisation of the dynamical quantum state of a zero temperature Bose-Einstein condensate

We describe the quantum state of a Bose-Einstein condensate at zero temperature. By evaluating the Q-function we show that the ground state of Bose-Einstein condensate under the Hartree approximation is squeezed. We find that multimode Schroedinger cat states are generated as the condensate evolves in a ballistic expansion.

Quantum non-demolition measurements using Bose-Einstein condensates

We study possible scenarios for quantum non-demolition measurements using Bose-Einstein condensates. We show that the interactions between condensate atoms makes it possible to measure the atom number with minimal back action on the system. This is an example of atomic nonlinear optics that has significant implications in the quantum state preparation of the Bose condensates.

Nonexponential motional damping of impurity atoms in Bose-Einstein condensates

We demonstrate that the damping of the motion of an impurity atom injected at a supercritical velocity into a Bose-Einstein condensate can exhibit appreciable deviation from the exponential law on time scales of $10^{-5}$ s.

Bogoliubov theory of the Hawking effect in Bose-Einstein condensates

Artificial black holes may demonstrate some of the elusive quantum properties of the event horizon, in particular Hawking radiation. One promising candidate is a sonic hole in a Bose-Einstein condensate. We clarify why Hawking radiation emerges from the condensate and how this condensed-matter analog reflects some of the intriguing aspects of quantum black holes.

Excitation spectrum of three dressed Bose-Einstein condensates

We study quantum dynamics of three dressed Bose-Einstein condensates in a high-Q cavity. The quasiparticle excitation spectrum of this system is found numerically. The stability of the quasiparticle excitation is analyzed. It is shown that there exist instabilities in the excitation spectrum.

Squeezing and temperature measurement in Bose-Einstein Condensates

In this paper we discuss the presence of temperature-dependent squeezing in the collective excitations of trapped Bose-Einstein condensates, based on a recent theory of quasiparticle damping. A new scheme to measure temperature below the critical temperature is also considered.

Critical velocity in cylindrical Bose-Einstein condensates

We describe a dramatic decrease of the critical velocity in elongated cylindrical Bose-Einstein condensates which originates from the non-uniform character of the radial density profile. We discuss this mechanism with respect to recent measurements at MIT.

Vortex sorter for Bose-Einstein condensates

We have designed interferometers that sort Bose-Einstein condensates into their vortex components. The Bose-Einstein condensates in the two arms of the interferometer are rotated with respect to each other through fixed angles; different vortex components then exit the interferometer in different directions. The method we use to rotate the Bose-Einstein condensates involves asymmetric phase imprinting and is itself new. A classical field method for time dependent Bose condensed gases

We propose a method to study the time evolution of Bose condensed gases perturbed from an initial thermal equilibrium, based on the Wigner representation of the $N$-body density operator. We show how to generate a collection of random classical fields sampling the initial Wigner distribution in the number conserving Bogoliubov approximation. The fields are then evolved with the time dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation. We illustrate the method with the damping of a collective excitation of a one-dimensional Bose gas.

Dissipative Dynamics of a Josephson Junction In the Bose-Gases

The dissipative dynamics of a Josephson junction in the Bose-gases is considered within the framework of the model of a tunneling Hamiltonian. The effective action which describes the dynamics of the phase difference across the junction is derived using functional integration method. The dynamic equation obtained for the phase difference across the junction is analyzed for the finite temperatures in the low frequency limit involving the radiation terms. The asymmetric case of the Bose-gases with the different order parameters is calculated as well.

Vortex Creation in Bose-Einstein Condensates by Diffraction on a Helical Light Grating

It is shown that diffraction of Bose-Einstein condensates on a helical light grating results in vortices in the condensate. Helical light gratings can be produced by light interference of a Gaussian laser beam with a helical one. Diffraction orders of the Bose-Einstein condensate contain vortices of corresponding topological charge. The phenomena is illustrated by numerical integration of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation in two dimensions.

Quantum spins mixing in spinor Bose-Einstein condensates

We examine the internal structure of the ground states of a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate in which atoms have three internal hyperfine spins. We determine a set of collective spin states which minimize the interaction energy between condensate atoms. We also examine the internal dynamics of an initially spin polarized condensate. The time scale of spin-mixing is predicted.

Exact solutions of the two-mode model of multicomponent Bose-Einstein condensates

We find the explicit solution of a two--mode model used to explain vortex dynamics in multicomponent Bose-Einstein condensates. We prove that all the solutions are constants or periodic functions and give explicit formulae for the time evolution of the populations of the two atomic species present in the condensate.

Interference of an array of independent Bose-Einstein condensates

We have observed high-contrast matter wave interference between 30 Bose-Einstein condensates with uncorrelated phases. Interference patterns were observed after independent condensates were released from a one-dimensional optical lattice and allowed to expand and overlap. This initially surprising phenomenon is explained with a simple theoretical model which generalizes the analysis of the interference of two independent condensates.
