The first main purpose of this paper is to contribute to the existing knowledge about the complex projective surfaces $S$ of general type with $p_g(S) = 0$ and their moduli spaces, constructing 19 new families of such surfaces with hitherto unknown fundamental groups. We also provide a table containing all the known such surfaces with K^2 <=7.
Our second main purpose is to describe in greater generality the fundamental groups of smooth projective varieties which occur as the minimal resolutions of the quotient of a product of curves by the action of a finite group.
We classify, in the two dimensional case, all the surfaces with q=p_g = 0 obtained as the minimal resolution of such a quotient, having rational double points as singularities. We show that all these surfaces give evidence to the Bloch conjecture.
We study moduli spaces of certain sextic curves with a singularity of multiplicity 3 from both perspectives of Deligne-Mostow theory and periods of K3 surfaces. In both ways we can describe the moduli spaces via arithmetic quotients of complex hyperbolic balls. We show in Theorem 7.4 that the two ball-quotient constructions can be unified in a geometric way.
We study Deraux's non arithmetic orbifold ball quotient surfaces obtained as birational transformations of a quotient $X$ of a particular Abelian surface $A$. Using the fact that $A$ is the Jacobian of the Bolza genus $2$ curve, we identify $X$ as the weighted projective plane $\mathbb{P}(1,3,8)$. We compute the equation of the mirror $M$ of the orbifold ball quotient $(X,M)$ and by taking the quotient by an involution, we obtain an orbifold ball quotient surface with mirror birational to an interesting configuration of plane curves of degrees $1,2$ and $3$. We also exhibit an arrangement of f…
We study mixed surfaces, the minimal resolution S of the singularities of a quotient (C x C)/G of the "square" of a curve by a finite group G of automorphisms that contains elements not preserving the factors. We study them through the "further quotients" by (C x C)/G' where G' contains G. As a first application we prove that if the irregularity is at least 3, then S is also minimal. The result is sharp. The main result is a complete description of the Albanese morphism of S through a determined further quotient (C x C)/G' that is an étale cover of the symmetric square of a curve. In particula…
The geometry of the ball quotient model of the moduli space of genus four curves
We provide a description of the fundamental group of the quotient of a product of topological spaces $X_i$, each admitting a universal cover, by a finite group $G$, provided that there is only a finite number of path-connected components in $X_i^g$ for every $g\in G$. This generalizes previous work of Bauer-Catanese-Grunewald-Pignatelli and Dedieu-Perroni.
We prove the existence of semiorthogonal decompositions of derived categories of Quot schemes of zero-dimensional quotients on curves in terms of derived categories of symmetric products of curves. The above result is a categorical analogue of a similar formula for the class of Quot schemes in the Grothendieck ring of varieties by Bagnarol-Fantechi-Perroni. It is a special case of a more general Quot formula of relative dimension one, which is regarded as a Bosonic counterpart of the Quot formula conjectured by Jiang and proved by the author. The proof involves categorical wall-crossing formul…
A group $H \cong {\mathbb Z}_{2}^{n}$, $n \geq 3$, of conformal automorphisms of a closed Riemann surface $S$ such that $S/H$ has genus zero and exactly $(n+1)$ cone points is called a generalized Humbert group of type $n$, in which case, $S$ is called a generalized Humbert curve of type $n$. It is known that a generalized Humbert curve $S$ of type $n \geq 4$ is non-hyperelliptic and that it admits a unique generalized Humbert group $H$ of type $n$. We describe those subgroups $K$ of $H$, acting freely on $S$, such that $S/K$ is hyperelliptic.
We complete the computation of all $\mathbb{Q}$-rational points on all the $64$ maximal Atkin-Lehner quotients $X_0(N)^*$ such that the quotient is hyperelliptic. To achieve this, we use a combination of various methods, namely the classical Chabauty--Coleman, elliptic curve Chabauty, quadratic Chabauty, and the bielliptic quadratic Chabauty method combined with the Mordell-Weil sieve. Additionally, for square-free levels $N$, we classify all $\mathbb{Q}$-rational points as cusps, CM points (including their CM field and $j$-invariants) and exceptional ones. We further indicate how to use this …
We prove Qingyuan Jiang's conjecture on semiorthogonal decompositions of derived categories of Quot schemes of locally free quotients. The author's result on categorified Hall products for Grassmannian flips is applied to prove the conjecture.
We give a method for the computation of the plurigenera of a product-quotient manifold. We give two different types of applications to it: to the construction of Calabi-Yau threefolds and to the determination of the minimal model of a product-quotient surface of general type.
Let $N\geq 1$ be a non-square free integer and let $W_N$ be a non-trivial subgroup of the group of the Atkin-Lehner involutions of $X_0(N)$ such that the modular curve $X_0(N)/W_N$ has genus at least two. We determine all pairs $(N,W_N)$ such that $X_0(N)/W_N$ is a bielliptic curve and the pairs $(N,W_N)$ such that $X_0(N)/W_N$ has an infinite number of quadratic points over $\mathbb{Q}$.
A closed Riemann surface $S$ is called a generalized Fermat curve of type $(p,n)$, where $n,p \geq 2$ are integers such that $(p-1)(n-1)>2$, if it admits a group $H \cong {\mathbb Z}_{p}^{n}$ of conformal automorphisms with quotient orbifold $S/H$ of genus zero with exactly $n+1$ cone points, each one of order $p$; in this case $H$ is called a generalized Fermat group of type $(p,n)$. In this case, it is known that $S$ is non-hyperelliptic and that $H$ is its unique generalized Fermat group of type $(p,n)$. Also, explicit equations for them, as a fiber product of classical Fermat curves of deg…
In this paper the authors study quotients of the product of elliptic curves by a rigid diagonal action of a finite group $G$. It is shown that only for $G = \operatorname{He(3)}, \mathbb Z_3^2$, and only for dimension $\geq 4$ such an action can be free. A complete classification of the singular quotients in dimension 3 and the smooth quotients in dimension $4$ is given. For the other finite groups a strong structure theorem for rigid quotients is proven.
