We characterize the non-uniqueness in the inverse problem for the stationary transport model, in which the absorption "a" and the scattering coefficient "k" are to be recovered from the albedo operator. We show that "gauge equivalent" pairs (a,k) yield the same albedo operator, and that we can recover uniquely the class of gauge equivalent pairs. We apply this result to show unique determination of the media when the absorption "a" depends on the line of travel through each point while scattering "k" obeys a symmetry property. Previously known results concerned directional independent absorption.
This paper deals with existence and uniqueness results for a transient nonlinear radiative-conductive system in three-dimensional case. This system describes the heat transfer for a grey, semi-transparent and non-scattering medium with general boundary conditions. We reformulate the full transient state system as a fixed-point problem. The existence and uniqueness proof is based on Banach fixed point theorem.
The aim of this article is to investigate the uniqueness of solution of an inverse problem for ultrahyperbolic equations. We first reduce the inverse problem to a Cauchy problem for an integro-differential equation and then by using a pointwise Carleman type inequality we prove the uniqueness.
This article proves the uniqueness for two kinds of inverse problems of identifying fractional orders in diffusion equations with multiple time-fractional derivatives by pointwise observation. By means of eigenfunction expansion and Laplace transform, we reduce the uniqueness for our inverse problems to the uniqueness of expansions of some special function and complete the proof.
We consider an inverse boundary value problem for diffusion equations with multiple fractional time derivatives. We prove the uniqueness in determining a number of fractional time-derivative terms, the orders of the derivatives and spatially varying coefficients.
In the paper, we study the inverse problem with the resonant data of fast decaying potential $V$. We review Froese' construction of the Born's approximation and Neumann series to analyze the growth of scattering determinant. Assuming all the the resonances are given, we deduce the certain inverse uniqueness on $V$ from the Nevanlinna type of representation theorem.
In this paper, we consider the inverse reaction coefficient problems (IRCPs) for nonlocal diffusion equation and multi-term time-fractional nonlocal diffusion equation from the average nonlocal flux data in external reaction region. Based on the nonlocal maximum principle we established, the uniqueness theorem for IRCPs are proved.
We consider inverse boundary value problems for the Navier-Stokes equations and the isotropic Lamé system in two dimensions. The uniqueness without any smallness assumptions on unknown coefficients, which is called global uniqueness, was longstanding open problems for the Navier-Stokes equations and the isotropic Lamé system in two dimensions. We prove the global uniqueness for both inverse boundary value problems. Our methodology are common for both systems and the key is the construction of complex geometric optics solutions after decoupling the systems into weakly coupling systems.
We study uniqueness and nondegeneracy of ground states for stationary nonlinear Schrödinger equations with a focusing power-type nonlinearity and an attractive inverse-power potential. We refine the results of Shioji and Watanabe (2016) and apply it to prove the uniqueness and nondegeneracy of ground states for our equations. We also discuss the orbital instability of ground state-standing waves.
We consider inverse boundary value problems for the Schrodinger equations in two dimensions. Within less regular classes of potentials, we establish a conditional stability estimate of logarithmic order. Moreover we prove the uniqueness within $L^p$-class of potentials with $p > 2$.
In this paper we consider the inverse boundary value problem for the Schrödinger equation with potential in $L^p$ class, $p>4/3$. We show that the potential is uniquely determined by the boundary measurements.
An inverse problem to determine a space-dependent factor in a semilinear time-fractional diffusion equation is considered. Additional data are given in the form of an integral with the Borel measure over the time. Uniqueness of the solution of the inverse problem is studied. The method uses a positivity principle of the corresponding differential equation that is also proved in the paper.
We consider the inverse problem of determining the Lamé parameters and the density of a three-dimensional elastic body from the local time-harmonic Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. We prove uniqueness and Lipschitz stability of this inverse problem when the Lamé parameters and the density are assumed to be piecewise constant on a given domain partition.
In this paper, we consider an inverse problem for three dimensional viscoelastic fluid flow equations, which arises from the motion of Kelvin-Voigt fluids in bounded domains (a hyperbolic type problem). This inverse problem aims to reconstruct the velocity and kernel of the memory term simultaneously, from the measurement described as the integral over determination condition. By using the contraction mapping principle in an appropriate space, a local in time existence and uniqueness result for the inverse problem of Kelvin-Voigt fluids are obtained. Furthermore, using similar arguments, a glo…
We study an inverse uniqueness with a knowledge of spectral data in the interior transmission problem defined by an index of refraction in a simple domain. We expand the solution in such a domain into a series of one dimensional problems. For each one dimensional problem, we apply a value distribution theory in complex analysis to describe the eigenvalues of the system. By the orthogonality of the one dimensional system, we consider the uniqueness on the perturbation along each given incident angle.
This paper is devoted to the inverse problem of determining the spatially dependent source in a time fractional diffusion-wave equation, with the aid of extra measurement data at subboundary. Uniqueness result is obtained by using the analyticity and the new established unique continuation principle provided that the coefficients are all temporally independent. We also derive a Lipschitz stability of our inverse source problem under a suitable topology whose norm is given via the adjoint system of the fractional diffusion-wave equation.
This paper is devoted to the uniqueness of inverse acoustic scattering problems with the modulus of near-field data. By utilizing the superpositions of point sources as the incident waves, we rigorously prove that the phaseless near-fields collected on an admissible surface can uniquely determine the location and shape of the obstacle as well as its boundary condition and the refractive index of a medium inclusion, respectively. We also establish the uniqueness in determining a locally rough surface from the phaseless near-field data due to superpositions of point sources. These are novel uniq…
It is proved that a general polyhedral perfect conducting obstacle in $\mathbb{R}^3$, possibly consisting of finitely many solid polyhedra, is uniquely determined by the far-field pattern corresponding to a single incident wave. This improves earlier results in the literature to the formally determined case.
We present a uniqueness result in dimensions $2$ and $3$ for the inverse fixed angle scattering problem associated to the Schrödinger operator $-Δ+q$, where $q$ is a small real valued potential with compact support in the Sobolev space $W^{β,2}$ with $β>0.$ This result improves the known result, due to Stefanov, in the sense that almost no regularity is required for the potential. The uniqueness result still holds in dimension $4$, but for more regular potentials in $W^{β,2}$ with $β>2/3$.
We consider the inverse boundary value problem for the steady state convection diffusion equation. We prove that a velocity field $V$, is uniquely determined by the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map, when $V \in C^{0,γ} (Ω)$, $2/3< γ\leq 1$, i.e. when $V$ is a Hölder continuous vector field with $2/3< γ\leq 1$.
In this paper we address the uniqueness issue in the classical Robin inverse problem on a Lipschitz domain $Ω\subset\RR^n$, with $L^\infty$ Robin coefficient, $L^2$ Neumann data and isotropic conductivity of class $W^{1,r}(Ω)$, $r\textgreater{}n$. We show that uniqueness of the Robin coefficient on a subpart of the boundary given Cauchy data on the complementary part, does hold in dimension $n=2$ but needs not hold in higher dimension. We also raise on open issue on harmonic gradients which is of interest in this context.
In this paper we introduce the functional framework and the necessary conditions for the well-posedness of an inverse problem arising in the mathematical modeling of disease transmission. The direct problem is given by an initial boundary value problem for a reaction diffusion system. The inverse problem consists in the determination of the disease and recovery transmission rates from observed measurement of the direct problem solution at the end time. The unknowns of the inverse problem are coefficients of the reaction term. We formulate the inverse problem as an optimization problem for an a…
We consider an inverse problem for an inhomogeneous wave equation with discrete-in-time sources, modeling a seismic rupture. We assume that the sources occur along a path with subsonic velocity, and that data are collected over time on some detection surface. We explore the question of uniqueness for these problems, show how to recover the times and locations of sources microlocally, and then reconstruct the smooth part of the source assuming that it is the same at each source location.
We consider the inverse problem of recovering the spherically symmetric sound speed, density and attenuation in the Sun from the observations of the acoustic field randomly excited by turbulent convection. We show that observations at two heights above the photosphere and at two frequencies above the acoustic cutoff frequency uniquely determine the solar parameters. We also present numerical simulations which confirm this theoretical result.
We consider the inverse boundary value problem of recovering piecewise homogeneous elastic tensor and piecewise homogeneous mass density from a localized lateral Dirichlet-to-Neumann or Neumann-to-Dirichlet map for the elasticity equation in the space-time domain. We derive uniqueness for identifying these tensor and density on all domains of homogeneity that may be reached from the part of the boundary where the measurements are taken by a chain of subdomains whose successive interfaces contain a curved portion.
In the present work, we investigate a uniqueness of solution of the inverse source problem with non-local conditions for mixed parabolic-hyperbolic type equation with Caputo fractional derivative. Solution of the problem we represent as bi-orthogonal series with respect to space variable and will get fractional order differential equations with respect to time-variable. Using boundary and gluing conditions, we deduce system of algebraic equations regarding unknown constants and imposing condition to the determinant of this system, we prove a uniqueness of considered problem. Moreover, we find …
The first part of this paper is concerned with the uniqueness to inverse time-harmonic elastic scattering from bounded rigid obstacles in two dimensions. It is proved that a connected polygonal obstacle can be uniquely identified by the far-field pattern over all observation directions corresponding to a single incident plane wave. Our approach is based on a new reflection principle for the first boundary value problem of the Navier equation. In the second part, we propose a revisited factorization method to recover a rigid elastic body with a single far-field pattern.
In this paper, we prove the local uniqueness of an inverse problem arising in the nonstationary flow of a nonhomogeneous incompressible asymmetric fluid in a bounded domain with smooth boundary. The direct problem is an initial-boundary value problem for a system for the velocity field, the angular velocity of rotation of the fluid particles, the mass density and the pressure distribution. The inverse problem consists in the external force recover assuming an integral measurements on the boundary. We characterize the inverse problem solutions using an operator equation of second kind, which is…
A uniqueness result for the recovery of the electric and magnetic coefficients in the time-harmonic Maxwell equations from local boundary measurements is proven. No special geometrical condition is imposed on the inaccessible part of the boundary of the domain, apart from imposing that the boundary of the domain is $C^{1,1}$. The coefficients are assumed to coincide on a neighbourhood of the boundary, a natural property in applications.
In dimension $n\geq 3$, we prove a local uniqueness result for the potentials $q$ of the Schrödinger equation $-Δu+qu=0$ from partial boundary data. More precisely, we show that potentials $q_1,q_2\in L^\infty$ with positive essential infima can be distinguished by local boundary data if there is a neighborhood of a boundary part where $q_1\geq q_2$ and $q_1\not\equiv q_2$.
Let $A$ be an arbitrary positive selfadjoint operator, defined in a separable Hilbert space $H$. The inverse problems of determining the right-hand side of the equation and the function $ϕ$ in the non-local boundary value problem $D_t^ρ u(t) + Au(t) = f(t)$ ($0 < ρ< 1, 0 < t \leq T$), $u(ξ) = αu(0) + ϕ$, ($α$ is a constant and $0 < ξ\leq T)$, is considered. Operator $D_t$ on the left-hand side of the equation expresses the Caputo derivative. For both inverse problems $u(ξ_1) = V$ is taken as the over-determination condition. Existence and uniqueness theorems for solutions of the problems under…
This paper is concerned with the uniqueness of inverse acoustic scattering problem for cavities with the modulus of the near-fields. With the aid of the reference ball technique and the superpositions of two point sources as the incident waves, we rigorously prove that the location and shape of the cavity as well as its boundary condition can be uniquely determined by the modulus of near-fields at an admissible surface. To our knowledge, this is the first uniqueness result in inverse cavity scattering problems with phaseless near-field data. In this paper, we make use of the phaseless near-fie…
We consider fractional diffusion-wave equations with source term which is represented in a form of a product of a temporal function and a spatial function. We prove the uniqueness for inveres source problem of determining spatially varying factor by decay of data as the time tends to $\infty$, provided that the source does not work during the observations. Our main result asserts the uniqueness if data decay more rapidly than $\left(\frac{1}{t^p}\right)$ with any $p\in \N$ as $t\to\infty$. Date taken not from the initial time are realistic but the uniqueness was not known in general. The proof…
We study the reconstruction of the attenuation and absorption coefficients in a stationary linear transport equation from knowledge of albedo operator in dimension $n\geq 3$ on a Riemannian manifold in the presence of a magnetic field. We show the direct boundary value problem is well posed under two types of subcritical conditions. We obtain uniqueness and non-uniqueness results of the reconstruction under some restrictions. Finally, stability estimates are also established.
We discuss the inverse problem of determining the, possibly anisotropic, conductivity of a body $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^{n}$ when the so-called Neumann-to-Dirichlet map is locally given on a non empty curved portion $Σ$ of the boundary $\partialΩ$. We prove that anisotropic conductivities that are \textit{a-priori} known to be piecewise constant matrices on a given partition of $Ω$ with curved interfaces can be uniquely determined in the interior from the knowledge of the local Neumann-to-Dirichlet map.
In this paper, we prove a uniqueness result in the inverse problem of determining several non-constant coefficients of one-dimensional reaction-diffusion equations. Such reaction-diffusion equations include the classical model of Kolmogorov, Petrovsky and Piskunov as well as more sophisticated models from biology. When the reaction term contains an unknown polynomial part of degree $N,$ with non-constant coefficients $μ_k(x),$ our result gives a sufficient condition for the uniqueness of the determination of this polynomial part. This sufficient condition only involves pointwise measurements o…
We consider initial boundary value problems for one-dimensional diffusion equation with time-fractional derivative of order $α\in (0,1)$ which are subject to non-zero Neumann boundary conditions. We prove the uniqueness for an inverse coefficient problem of determining a spatially varying potential and the order of the time-fractional derivative by Dirichlet data at one end point of the spatial interval. The imposed Neumann conditions are required to be within the correct Sobolev space of order $α$. Our proof is based on a representation formula of solution to an initial boundary value problem…
This paper consists of two parts. In the first part we describe the recent works on the inverse problems for the wave equation in $(n+1)$-dimensional space equipped with pseudo-Riemannian metric with Lorentz signature. We study the conditions of the existence of black (or white) holes for these wave equations. In the second part we prove energy type estimates on a finite time interval in the presence of black or white holes. We use these estimates to prove the nonuniqueness of the inverse problems.
In this article, we investigate inverse source problems for a wide range of PDEs of parabolic and hyperbolic types as well as time-fractional evolution equations by partial interior observation. Restricting the source terms to the form of separated variables, we establish uniqueness results for simultaneously determining both temporal and spatial components without non-vanishing assumptions at $t=0$, which seems novel to the best of our knowledge. Remarkably, mostly we allow a rather flexible choice of the observation time not necessarily starting from $t=0$, which fits into various situations…
We consider initial boundary value problems of time-fractional advection-diffusion equations with the zero Dirichlet boundary value $\partial_t^α u(x,t) = -Au(x,t)$, where $-A = \sum}{i,j=1}^d \partial_i(a_{ij}(x)\partial_j) + \sum{j=1}^d b_j(x)\partial_j + c(x)$. We establish the uniqueness for an inverse problem of determining an order $α$ of fractional derivatives by data $u(x_0,t)$ for $0<t<T$ at one point $x_0$ in a spatial domain $\OOO$. The uniqueness holds even under assumption that $\OOO$ and $A$ are unknown, provided that the initial value does not change signs and is not identically…
We consider a parabolic equation in a bounded domain $\OOO$ over a time interval $(0,T)$ with the homogeneous Neumann boundary condition. We arbitrarily choose a subboundary $Γ\subset \ppp\OOO$. Then, we discuss an inverse problem of determining a zeroth-order spatially varying coefficient by extra data of solution $u$: $u\vert_{Γ\times (0,T)}$ and $u(\cdot,t_0)$ in $\OOO$ with $t_0=0$ or $t=T$. First we establish a conditional Lipschitz stability estimate as well as the uniqueness for the case $t_0=T.$ Second, under additional condition for $Γ$, we prove the uniqueness for the case $t_0=0$. T…
Consider a three dimensional piecewise homogeneous anisotropic elastic medium $Ω$ which is a bounded domain consisting of a finite number of bounded subdomains $D_α$, with each $D_α$ a homogeneous elastic medium. One typical example is a finite element model with elements with curvilinear interfaces for an ansiotropic elastic medium. Assuming the $D_α$ are known and Lipschitz, we are concerned with the uniqueness in the inverse boundary value problem of identifying the anisotropic elasticity tensor on $Ω$ from a localized Dirichlet to Neumann map given on a part of the boundary $\partial D_{α_…
In this work, we investigate the shape identification and coefficient determination associated with two time-dependent partial differential equations in two dimensions. We consider the inverse problems of determining a convex polygonal obstacle and the coefficient appearing in the wave and Schrödinger equations from a single dynamical data along with the time. With the far field data, we first prove that the sound speed of the wave equation together with its contrast support of convex-polygon type can be uniquely determined, then establish a uniqueness result for recovering an electric potenti…
In this paper, we consider inverse time-harmonic acoustic and electromagnetic scattering from locally perturbed rough surfaces in three dimensions. The scattering interface is supposed to be the graph of a Lipschitz continuous function with compact support. It is proved that an acoustically sound-soft or sound-hard surface can be uniquely determined by the far-field pattern of infinite number of incident plane waves with distinct directions. Moreover, a single point source or plane wave can be used to uniquely determine a scattering surface of polyhedral type. These uniqueness results apply to…
In this paper, we discuss the uniqueness for solution to time-fractional diffusion equation $\partial_t^α(u-u_0) + Au=0$ with the homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition, where an elliptic operator $-A$ is not necessarily symmetric. We prove that the solution is identically zero if its normal derivative with respect to the operator $A$ vanishes on an arbitrary small part of the spatial domain over a time interval. The proof is based on the Laplace transform and the spectral decomposition, and is valid for more general time-fractional partial differential equations, including those involving n…
The aim of the paper is twofold. Firstly, we would like to derive quantitative uniqueness estimates for solutions of the general complex conductivity equation. It is still unknown whether the \emph{strong} unique continuation property holds for such equations. Nonetheless, in this paper, we show that the unique continuation property in the form of three-ball inequalities is satisfied for the complex conductivity equation under only Lipschitz assumption on the leading coefficients. The derivation of such estimates relies on a delicate Carleman estimate. Secondly, we study the problem of estimat…
This paper is concerned with the uniqueness in inverse acoustic scattering problems with the modulus of the far-field patterns co-produced by the obstacle (resp. medium) and the point sources. Based on the superposition of point sources as the incident waves, we overcome the difficulty of translation invariance induced by a single incident plane wave, and rigorously prove that the location and shape of the obstacle as well as its boundary condition or the refractive index can be uniquely determined by the modulus of far-field patterns. This work is different from our previous work on phaseless…
The paper considers direct and inverse elastic scattering from a cavity in homogeneous medium with Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions. For direct scattering, existence and uniqueness are derived by variation approach. For inverse scattering, Fr$\acute{\rm e}$chet derivatives of the solution operators are investigated, which give local stability for Dirichlet case.
This paper is devoted to the uniqueness in inverse acoustic scattering problems for the Helmholtz equation with phaseless far-field data. Some novel techniques are developed to overcome the difficulty of translation invariance induced by a single incident plane wave. In this paper, based on adding a reference ball as an extra artificial impenetrable obstacle (resp. penetrable homogeneous medium) to the inverse obstacle (resp. medium) scattering system and then using superpositions of a fixed plane wave and some point sources as the incident waves, we rigorously prove that the location and shap…
For many wave propagation problems with random sources it has been demonstrated that cross correlations of wave fields are proportional to the imaginary part of the Green function of the underlying wave equation. This leads to the inverse problem to recover coefficients of a wave equation from the imaginary part of the Green function on some measurement manifold. In this paper we prove, in particular, local uniqueness results for the Schr{ö}dinger equation with one frequency and for the acoustic wave equation with unknown density and sound speed and two frequencies. As the main tool of our ana…
The manuscript is concerned with uniqueness and stability for inverse source problem of determining spatially varying factor $f(x)$ of a source term given by $R(t)f(x)$ with suitable given $R(t)$ in the right hand side of the Schrödinger equation with time independent coefficients. In order to establish these results we provide a simple proof of a logarithmic conditional stability of the Cauchy problem for the Schrödinger equation with time-independent coefficients and the zero Dirichlet boundary conditions on the whole boundary and a proof of uniqueness of solution to the Cauchy problem for t…
Given a set of transmission eigenvalues, we describe the connection of such a set to the indicator functions in entire function theory. The indicator functions control the asymptotic growth rate of the solution of the Sturm-Liouville problem which has an uniqueness in the inverse spectral theory. Henceforth, the set of transmission eigenvalues has an inverse spectral property.
