The objective of this work is to study the magnetic properties of arrays of Ni-Fe nanowires electrodeposited in different template materials such as porous silicon, polycarbonate and alumina. Magnetic properties were studied as a function of template material, applied magnetic field (parallel and perpendicular) during deposition, wire length, as well as magnetic field orientation during measurement. The results show that application of magnetic field during deposition strongly influences the c-axis preferred orientation growth of Ni-Fe nanowires. The samples with magnetic field perpendicular to template plane during deposition exhibits strong perpendicular anisotropy with greatly enhanced coercivity and squareness ratio, particularly in Ni-Fe nanowires deposited in polycarbonate templates. In case of polycarbonate template, as magnetic field during deposition increases, both coercivity and squareness ratio also increase. The wire length dependence was also measured for polycarbonate templates. As wire length increases, coercivity and squareness ratio decrease, but saturation field increases. Such magnetic behavior (dependence on template material, magnetic field, wire length) can be qualitatively explained by preferential growth phenomena, dipolar interactio
The formation of a 3D network composed of free standing and interconnected Pt nanowires is achieved by a two-step method, consisting of conformal deposition of Pt by atomic layer deposition (ALD) on a forest of carbon nanotubes and subsequent removal of the carbonaceous template. Detailed characterization of this novel 3D nanostructure was carried out by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). These characterizations showed that this pure 3D nanostructure of platinum is self-supported and offers an enhancement of the electrochemically active sur…
Guided growth of semiconductor nanowires in nanotube templates has been considered as a potential platform for reproducible integration of III-Vs on silicon or other mismatched substrates. Herein, we report on the challenges and prospects of molecular beam epitaxy of InAs nanowires on SiO2/Si nanotube templates. We show how and under which conditions the nanowire growth is initiated by In-assisted vapor-liquid-solid growth enabled by the local conditions inside the nanotube template. The conditions for high yield of vertical nanowires are investigated in terms of the nanotube depth, diameter a…
Micron-scale single-crystal nanowires of metallic TaSe3, a material that forms -Ta-Se3-Ta-Se3- stacks separated from one another by a tubular van der Waals (vdW) gap, have been synthesized using chemical vapor deposition (CVD) on a SiO2/Si substrate, in a process compatible with semiconductor industry requirements. Their electrical resistivity was found unaffected by downscaling from the bulk to as little as 7 nm in width and height, in striking contrast to the resistivity of copper for the same dimensions. While the bulk resistivity of TaSe3 is substantially higher than that of bulk copper, a…

Supported carbon nanosheets and carbon nanotubes served as sacrificial templates for preparing spacious TiO2 photocatalytic thin films. Amorphous TiO2 was deposited conformally on the carbonaceous template material by atomic layer deposition (ALD). Upon calcination at 550°C, the carbon template was oxidatively removed and the as-deposited continuous amorphous TiO2 layers transformed into interlinked anatase nanoparticles with an overall morphology commensurate to the original template structure. The effect of type of template, number of ALD cycles and gas residence time of pollutant on the pho…
GaN/SiO2 core/shell nanowires are grown by cobalt phthalocyanine catalyst assisted vapor-liquid-solid route, in which Si wafer coated with a mixture of gallium and indium is used as the source for Ga and Si and ammonia is used as the precursor for nitrogen and hydrogen. Gallium in the presence of indium and hydrogen, which results from the dissociation of ammonia, forms Si-Ga-In alloy at the growth temperature around 910 degree Celsius. This alloy acts as the source of Si, Ga and In. A detailed study using a variety of characterization tools reveals that these wires, which are several tens of …
Superconducting nanowires can be fabricated by decomposition of an organometallic gas using a focused beam of Ga ions. However, physical damage and unintentional doping often results from the exposure to the ion beam, motivating the search for a means to achieve similar structures with a beam of electrons instead of ions. This has so far remained an experimental challenge. We report the fabrication of superconducting tungsten nanowires by electron-beam-induced-deposition, with critical temperature of 2.0 K and critical magnetic field of 3.7 T, and compare them with superconducting wires made w…
In this research a novel and simple electrochemical method is developed in order to facilitate the large-scale production of nanowires. The proposed electrochemical technique shows versatile controllability over chemical composition and crystalline structure of Cu-Sn nanowires. Another important factor, which could be controlled by using this method, is the order structure of nanowires more accurately in comparison to conventional synthesizing procedures. As a result, the Cu-Sn nanowires as well as Aluminum Oxide templates synthesized by using the proposed electrochemical method are examined d…
Porous metal oxides with nano-sized features attracted intensive interest in recent decades due to their high surface area which is essential for many applications, e.g. Li ion batteries, photocatalysts, fuel cells and dye-sensitized solar cells. Various approaches were so far investigated to synthesize porous nanostructured metal oxides, including self-assembly and template-assisted synthesis. For the latter approach, forests of carbon nanotubes are considered as particularly promising templates, with respect to their one dimensional nature and the resulting high surface area. In this work, w…
Highly ordered and self supported anatase TiO2 nanoparticle chains were fabricated by calcining conformally TiO2 coated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). During annealing, the thin tubular TiO2 coating that was deposited onto the MWCNTs by atomic layer deposition (ALD) was transformed into chains of TiO2 nanoparticles (~12 nm diameter) with an ultrahigh surface area (137 cm2 per cm2 of substrate), while at the same time the carbon from the MWCNTs was removed. Photocatalytic tests on the degradation of acetaldehyde proved that these forests of TiO2 nanoparticle chains are highly photo act…
Core-shell nanowire heterostructures form the basis for many innovative devices. When compound nanowire shells are grown by directional deposition techniques, the azimuthal position of the sources for the different constituents in the growth reactor, substrate rotation, and nanowire self-shadowing inevitably lead to sequential deposition. Here, we uncover for In$_{0.15}$Ga$_{0.85}$As/GaAs shell quantum wells grown by molecular beam epitaxy a drastic impact of this sequentiality on the luminescence efficiency. The photoluminescence intensity of shell quantum wells grown with a flux sequence cor…
In this paper the early stages of the self-catalyzed Vapor-Liquid-Solid (VLS) growth of GaAs nanowires on epi-ready Si substrates by Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) are studied. The interaction of Ga nano-droplets (NDs) with the silica overlayer is investigated by X-ray Photoemission Spectroscopy (XPS) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). We show how Ga NDs drill the silica overlayer and make contact with bulk Si to allow GaAs nanowires (NWs) epitaxial growth by studying each of the three steps of the NW growth process sequentially: Ga NDs pre-deposition, post-deposition annealing to reach the NW g…
Using electrodeposition, we have grown nanowires of ZnCoO with Cu codoping concentrations varying from 4-10 at.%, controlled only by the deposition potential. We demonstrate control over magnetic Co oxide nano-precipitate formation in the nanowires via the Cu concentration. The different magnetic behavior of the Co oxide nano-precipitates indicates the potential of ZnCoO for magnetic sensor applications.
Template-assisted synthesis is a facile way of growing various one-dimensional nanostructures. Among various nanoporous templates, anodic aluminium oxide (AAO) is most commonly used. In this work, the kinetics of silver nanowire growth by electrodeposition in AAO templates was investigated. The AAO templates were fabricated using the standard two-step anodisation process. The geometrical features of the fabricated templates, such as pore diameter (55 nm), interpore distance (115 nm), wall thickness (27 nm), porosity (19.87 %), and pore density were obtained using scanning electron microscopy. …
We develop an InAs nanowire gate-all-around field-effect transistor using a transparent conductive zinc oxide (ZnO) gate electrode, which is in-situ atomic layer deposited after growth of gate insulator of Al2O3. We perform magneto-transport measurements and find a crossover from weak localization to weak antilocalization effect with increasing gate voltage, which demonstrates that the Rashba spin-orbit coupling is tuned by the gate electrode. The efficiency of the gate tuning of the spin-orbit interaction is higher than those obtained for two-dimensional electron gas, and as high as that for …
Networks of vertically c-oriented prism shaped InN nanowalls, are grown on c-GaN/sapphire templates using a CVD technique, where pure indium and ammonia are used as metal and nitrogen precursors. A systematic study of the growth, structural and electronic properties of these samples shows a preferential growth of the islands along [11-20] and [0001] directions leading to the formation of such a network structure, where the vertically [0001] oriented tapered walls are laterally align along one of the three [11-20] directions. Inclined facets of these walls are identified as r-planes [(1-102)-pl…
One-dimensional (1D) nanostructures - nanowires (NWs) - exhibit promising properties for integration in different types of functional devices. Their properties can be enhanced even further or tuned for a specific application by combining different promising materials, such as layered van der Waals materials and conventional semiconductors, into 1D-1D core-shell heterostructures. In this work, we demonstrated growth of GaN-MoS2 and GaN-WS2 core-shell NWs via two different methods: (1) two-step process of sputter-deposition of a sacrificial transition metal oxide coating on GaN NWs followed by s…
The controllable handling of an arbitrary single particle of matter with sub-100 nanometer (nm) dimensions is an essential but unsolved scientific challenge. We demonstrate nanoparticle-seeded glancing angle deposition using 10-100 nm diameter nanoparticle seeds (Er2O3, Fe@C, and Fe). The products are nanoparticle-nanowire heterostructures composed of arbitrary nanoscale tips attached to micron-length nanowire handles. Optical micromanipulation of the micron-scale handles enables concurrent manipulation of the attached nanoscale particles of matter.
During the synthesis of heterostructured nanomaterials, unwanted structural and morphological changes in nanostructures may occur, especially when multiple sequential growth steps are involved. In this study, we describe a synthesis strategy of heterostructured ZnS/Al2O3/MoS2 core-shell nanowires (NWs), and explore the role of the Al2O3 interlayer during synthesis. Core-shell NWs were produced via a four-step route: 1) synthesis of ZnO NWs on a silicon wafer, 2) deposition of thin Al2O3 layer by ALD, 3) magnetron deposition of MoO3 layer, and 4) annealing of the sample in the sulphur atmospher…
In this paper, we study the solar selective absorbing properties of metal nanowire array (NWA) / anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) composites at 1000 K via numerical simulation. The materials and structural parameters which influence the wavelength absorption between 0.28 and 10 microns are simulated and optimized. The results reveal that W NWA / AAO composites with nanowire length of 7.3 microns, fill factor of 0.03, and AAO template thickness of 0.1 microns exhibits the best selective absorption. This composite has 0.90 solar absorptivity and 0.045 thermal emissivity in 1000 K, and shows a phototh…
One-dimensional defects in graphene have strong influence on its physical properties, such as electrical charge transport and mechanical strength. With enhanced chemical reactivity, such defects may also allow us to selectively functionalize the material and systematically tune the properties of graphene. Here we demonstrate the selective deposition of metal at chemical vapour deposited graphene's line defects, notably grain boundaries, by atomic layer deposition. Atomic layer deposition allows us to deposit Pt predominantly on graphene's grain boundaries, folds, and cracks due to the enhanced…
Sol-gel electrophoresis is used to grow PbTiO3 nanotube arrays in porous anodic alumina template channels, because it is a cheap and simple method for the growth of nanostructures and has the advantage of better tube growth control. Moreover, this method can produce nanotubes with high quality and more condense structures. In this technique, semiconductor porous anodic alumina templates are used to grow the nanotube arrays. Consequently, close-packed PbTiO3 nanotube arrays are grown in the template channels. It is shown here that, to the best of our knowledge, sol-gel electrophoresis is the on…
Twin boundaries (TBs) are assumed to be obstacles to dislocation motion and increase the strength of metals. Here, we report the abnormal phenomenon that TBs reduce the strength of body-centered cubic (BCC) tungsten (W). [1-11]-oriented W nanowires with (121) twin planes and free of dislocations were fabricated by chemical vapor deposition. In situ tensile tests within the transmission electron microscope were performed on single-crystal and twinned W nanowires. The fracture strength of the twinned W nanowire was 13.7 GPa, 16% lower than that of the single-crystal W nanowire (16.3 GPa). The we…

The role of distribution of Au catalyst nanoparticles on the size and the shape of AlGaN nanowires are discussed. These variations in the morphology of the nanowires are understood invoking Ostwald ripening of Au catalyst nanoparticles at high temperature followed by the effect of single and multi-prong growth mechanism. Energy-filtered transmission electron microscopy is used as an evidence for the presence of Al in the as-prepared sampl…

The recent discovery of excellent thermoelectric properties and topological surface states in SnTe-based compounds has attracted extensive attention in various research areas. Indium doped SnTe is of particular interest because, depending on the doping level, it can either generate resonant states in the bulk valence band leading to enhanced thermoelectric properties, or induce superconductivity that coexists with topological states. Here we report on the vapor deposition of In-doped SnTe nanowires and the study of their surface oxidation and thermoelectric properties. The nanowire growth is a…
