Template-assisted synthesis is a facile way of growing various one-dimensional nanostructures. Among various nanoporous templates, anodic aluminium oxide (AAO) is most commonly used. In this work, the kinetics of silver nanowire growth by electrodeposition in AAO templates was investigated. The AAO templates were fabricated using the standard two-step anodisation process. The geometrical features of the fabricated templates, such as pore diameter (55 nm), interpore distance (115 nm), wall thickness (27 nm), porosity (19.87 %), and pore density were obtained using scanning electron microscopy. The oxide layer at the bottom of the pores was modified by the barrier layer thinning process and chemical etching in order to facilitate uniform metal deposition. This was followed by pore widening to increase the diameter of the pores to 65 nm to enhance deposition. Interpore distance increased to 119.8 nm and wall thickness remained almost constant at 27.7 nm. Silver was deposited using conventional electrodeposition in constant current mode. Deposition parameters such as time, current, solution concentration, and temperature were systematically investigated. For each deposition, the efficiency of the process was calculated by considering the filling fraction of the pores and the average length of the wires, all of which were measured from the SEM images. A linear growth versus time was observed within the parameter range. From the experiments, it was observed that decreasing the current, increasing the deposition temperature, and depositing for longer duration increased the average length of the nanowires. The use of electrodeposition to grow metallic nanowires can be extended to other pure metal and alloy systems.
Iron nanowires with a square cross section are grown by pulsed electrodeposition within a newly developed nanochannel template that allows for easy characterization. Measurements of the magnetoresistance as a function of magnetic field and temperature are performed within a large parameter window allowing for the investigation of the magnonic contribution to the magnetoresistance of electrodeposited iron nanowires. Values for the temperature dependent magnon stiffness D(T) are extracted.
Superconducting nanowires can be synthesised in high-throughput chemical routes and hold great promise as a low-dissipative material for superconducting devices. The applicability of superconducting nanowires, however, has been limited due to the lack of an adequate method to fit the nanowires into given electronic circuits. One of the biggest obstacles is to connect metal terminals to superconducting nanowires in order to establish electric contacts. One attractive method to surmount this difficulty is to synthesise superconducting nanowires directly upon metal terminals such that the nanowir…

In this research a novel and simple electrochemical method is developed in order to facilitate the large-scale production of nanowires. The proposed electrochemical technique shows versatile controllability over chemical composition and crystalline structure of Cu-Sn nanowires. Another important factor, which could be controlled by using this method, is the order structure of nanowires more accurately in comparison to conventional synthesizing procedures. As a result, the Cu-Sn nanowires as well as Aluminum Oxide templates synthesized by using the proposed electrochemical method are examined d…
Silver nanowires have great application potential in fields like flexible electronic devices, solar cells and transparent electrodes. It is critical and fundamental to study the thermal and electrical transport properties in a single silver nanowire. In this work, the thermal and electrical transport in an individual silver nanowire is characterized down to 35 K with the steady state electro-thermal technique. The results indicate that, at room temperature, the electrical resistivity increases by around 4 folds compared from that of its bulk counterpart. After fitting the temperature dependent…
Ordered arrays of magnetic nanowires are commonly synthesized by electrodeposition in nanoporous alumina templates. Due to their dense packing, strong magnetostatic interactions prevent the manipulation of wires individually. Using atomic layer deposition we reduce the diameter of the pores prior to electrodeposition. This reduces magnetostatic interactions, yielding fully remanent hysteresis loops. This is a first step towards the use of such arrays for magnetic racetrack memories.
Segmented magnetic nanowires are a promising route for the development of three dimensional data storage techniques. Such devices require a control of the coercive field and the coupling mechanisms between individual magnetic elements. In our study, we investigate electrodeposited nanomagnets within host templates using vibrating sample magnetometry and observe a strong dependence between nanowire length and coercive field (25 nm to 5 $μ$m) and diameter (25 nm to 45 nm). A transition from a magnetization reversal through coherent rotation to domain wall propagation is observed at an aspect rat…
A method of growing mushroom or shell like nanostructured metal convex concave models has been worked out. Silver, copper, nickel, rhodium and Pd-Ni,Pd-Co alloy structures are reproduced as a result of self-assembly of nanowires growing on porous membranes in the course of pulse current electrodeposition. It is shown that the method allows to model not only the shell shape but also the hierarchical structure at the nano, micro and mesolevels. A 1,2 mm sized shell was grown from Pd-Ni alloy. The architecture of the models was studied by fragmentation and chemical etching. The images were obtained …

We can consider such nanostructures as a three-dimensional system of magnetically interacting elements with magnetic behavior strongly affected by complex magnetostatic interactions. This study discusses the influence of geometrical parameters of segments on the character of their interactions and the overall magnetic behavior of the array of BNWs having alternating mag…
Ordered Ag nanowire arrays with high aspect ratio and high density self-supporting Ag nanowire patterns were successfully prepared using potentiostatic electrodeposition within the confined nanochannels of a commercial porous anodic aluminium oxide (AAO) template. X-ray diffraction and selected area electron diffraction analysis show that the as-synthesized samples have preferred (220) orientation. Transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy investigation reveal that large-area and ordered Ag nanowire arrays with smooth surface and uniform diameter were synthesized. Surfa…
Individual highly pure single crystalline silver nanowires (Ag NWs) were investigated with regard to the electrical conductivity $σ$, the thermal conductivity $λ$ and the Seebeck coefficient $S$ as function of the temperature $T$ between $1.4\,\mathrm{K}$ and room temperature (RT). Transmission electron microscopy was performed subsequently to the thermoelectric characterization of the Ag NWs, so that their transport properties can be correlated with the structural data. The crystal structure, surface morphology and the rare occurrence of kinks and twinning were identified. The thermoelectric …
Two segmented gold copper nanowires were grown inside the pores of polycarbonate track (PCT) etched membranes from two separate solutions by electrodeposition method. Optical absorption spectra of two segmented Au Cu nanowires in PCT template were shown a surface plasmon- polariton peak appeared at about 900 nm for incident angle of theta = 65 degrees but for theta= 0 there are not any peaks in spectra.
In this paper, we use the parameter retrieval method together with an analytical effective medium approach to design a well-performed invisible cloak, which is based on an empirical revised version of the reduced cloak. The designed cloak can be implemented by silver nanowires with elliptical cross-sections embedded in a polymethyl methacrylate host. This cloak is numerically proved to be robust for both the inner hidden object as well as incoming detecting waves, and is much simpler thus easier to manufacture when compared with the earlier proposed one [Nat. Photon. 1, 224 (2007)].
Gold-Silver (Au-Ag) core-shell nanostructures are gaining importance in stretchable electronics where high tensile and fatigue resistance is of paramount importance. This work proposes the parameterization of a modified embedded atomic model (MEAM) interatomic potential through density functional theory (DFT) calculations for investigating the role of dislocations and defect interaction governing the mechanical behavior of Au-Ag and Ag-Au Core-shell nanostructures under tensile and fatigue loading using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. A comparative analysis between the Core-shell structur…
Transparent electrodes (TEs) made of metallic nanowires, such as Ag, Au, Cu, and Ni, have attracted rising attention for several reasons: 1) they can act as a substitute for tin oxide-based TEs such as indium-tin oxide (ITO) and fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO); 2) various methods exist for fabricating such TEs such as filtration, spraying and meyer bar coating; 3) greater compatibility with different substrates can be achieved due to the variety of fabrication methods; and 4) extra functions in addition to serving as electrodes, such as catalytic abilities, can be obtained due to the metals tha…
In recent times the spin angular momentum (SAM) and orbital angular momentum (OAM) of light have gained prominence because of their significance in optical communication systems, micromanipulation, sub-wavelength position sensing. To this end, simultaneous detection of SAM and OAM of light beam is one of the important topics of research from both application and fundamental spin-orbit interaction (SOI) point of view. While interferometry and metasurface based approaches have been able to detect the states, our approach involves elastic scattering from a monocrystalline silver nanowire for the …

Homogenous and vertically aligned SiNWs have been successfully synthesized using metal-assisted chemical etching technique by varying the etching time from 10 to 30 min. AgNPr/GO/SiNW hybrids were assembled by spin-coating of GO followed by drop-casting deposition of AgNPr. The microstructures of AgNPr/GO/SiNWs are strongly affected by …
The synthesis of silver nanowires in solution phase is of great interest because of their applicability for fabrication of plasmonic devices. Silver nanowires with diameters of 6.5 nm and length exceeding microns are synthesized in aqueous solution by reduction of silver ions within the nanotubular J-aggregates of an amphiphilic cyanine dye. The time scale of the growth of the nanowires is of the order of hours and days which provides the unique possibility to investigate the nucleation, growth, and dissolution of the nanowires by direct imaging using transmission electron microscopy. It is fo…

Rapid and reproducible assembly of aligned nanostructures on a wafer-scale is a crucial, yet one of the most challenging tasks in the incorporation of nanowires into integrated circuits. We present the synthesis of a periodic nanochannel template designed for electrochemical growth of perfectly aligned, rectangular nanowires over large areas. The nanowires can be electrically contacted and characterized in situ using a pre-patterned multi-point measurement platform. During the measurement the wires remain within a thick oxide matrix providing protection against breaking and oxidation. We use l…
Thermoelectric (TE) measurements have been performed on the workhorses of today's data storage devices, exhibiting either the giant or the anisotropic magnetoresistance effect (GMR and AMR). The temperature-dependent (50-300 K) and magnetic field-dependent (up to 1 T) TE power factor (PF) has been determined for several Co-Ni alloy nanowires with varying Co:Ni ratios as well as for Co-Ni/Cu multilayered nanowires with various Cu layer thicknesses, which were all synthesized via a template-assisted electrodeposition process. A systematic investigation of the resistivity, as well as the Seebeck …
Porous silicon (p-Si), prepared by two routes (metal induced etching (MIE) and laser induced etching (LIE)) have been studied by comparing the observed surface morphologies using SEM. A uniformly distributed smaller (submicron sized) pores are formed when MIE technique is used because the pore formation is driven by uniformly distributed metal (silver in present case) nanoparticles, deposited prior to the porosification step. Whereas in p-Si, prepared by LIE technique, wider pores with some variation in pore size as compared to MIE technique is observed because a laser having gaussian profile …
Metallic nanowires are known to break into shorter fragments due to the Rayleigh instability mechanism. This process is strongly accelerated at elevated temperatures and can completely hinder the functioning of nanowire-based devices like e.g. transparent conductive and flexible coatings. At the same time, arranged gold nanodots have important applications in electrochemical sensors. In this paper we perform a series of annealing experiments of gold and silver nanowires and nanowire junctions at fixed temperatures 473, 673, 873 and 973 K (200, 400, 600 and 700 °C) during a time period of 10 mi…
YBCO fabrics composed of nanowires, produced by solution blow spinning (SBS) are so brittle that the Lorentz force produced by induced currents can be strong enough to damage them. On the other hand, it is known that silver addition improves the mechanical and flux pinning properties of ceramic superconductors. Thus, in this work, we show how we successfully obtained a polymeric precursor solution containing YBCO$+$Ag salts, which can be spun by the SBS route to produce ceramic samples. Yttrium, barium, copper, and silver metal acetates, and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) (in a ratio of 5:1wt [PVP…
